Ya know Prof, I was super hyped for this set. Ever since I saw how big double masters was, I was kicking myself for not buying any… to avoid that FOMO I reached out to every lgs I go to locally for prices. One lgs offered a deal that if I had enough bodies and desire for cards, and got 1-2 cases we could get an even better deal as a thanks for choosing them. 220 usd a draft box. Our preorder went all the way up to 19 boxes, before settling at 17 boxes amongst 10 friends. Well, on July 6, just two days before release, the store’s employee called to say the store manager/owner stepped in to say they would not honor the 220 USD per box price, and instead would only charge 400 USD per box, take it or leave it.
I was so heartbroken and angry that the LGS would take advantage of the price spike and not honor their pre-sale deal they offered for us going only to them. I’ve now been in a scramble to know if I can get any other boxes elsewhere for a good price, and no one wants to budge from 350-400.
To have the rug pulled out from under all 10 of us, had been such a blow. I just wanted to share this, because you hear about orders getting canceled, but I never figured I’d be someone who would have essentially the same thing happen, and I didn’t realize how much I would feel betrayed by an lgs I often go to.

I'd probably post a review on Yelp or Facebook or wherever, then just never give this place business again. Any business that does this does not deserve their customers. I don't care how the price fluctuates, if they sold a pre-order at a particular price, then that's the price. If they don't want to DEAL with that kind of thing, then they should not be in the business of accepting preorders.
Fuck 'em. Bad LGS is bad.

@@gunfighter009 Some people really enjoy drafting new sets, me included. I think having set boosters as well as draft boosters is meant to address the issue you mentioned, so that the drafters can draft and the constructed players can open value. I know that means that the commons, uncommons, and some rares that are designed for each set may be more "boring", but there is a real and sizeable audience who enjoys drafting sets with those "boring" cards in them. The preferences and demands of constructed players and limited players do not always line up perfectly, but I think both groups deserve to get something out of each set.

I gave up on attending Drafts years ago, for similar reasons. Almost never is the experience financially worthwhile to me, and the cards that I get out of it are typically not very good. I'd rather just crack a booster box all by my lonesome, and build from there. I know him, and he doesn't seem like the kind of person who would say that just to sell me a box if he didn't think it was true. @BakaGrappler 2 года назад +4

@@bmitchell922 Prices WILL dip, and then increase over the LONG TERM. After an initial dip, there will be mass purchases, causing a rise. Then after that rush, there will be another dip. Maybe there will only be two dips, maybe more. But THE PRODUCT ITSELF INCLUDING THE CARDS are going to have dips, then rises, and eventually, a slow increase in price of the sealed boxes until it's rarity makes the boxes more valuable than the contents. And, quite possibly, the prices on the Draft Boxes are already greater than the price of the contents after the initial Gold Rush for the set dies down.
The Single Cards are going to see their prices go down significantly after the initial rush of FOMO Players snatch up what they want, and people keep ripping packs for what they are looking to resell. The Commons and Uncommons are all going to be dirt cheap because no matter how rarely printed they are, there are far fewer commons and uncommons in this set. Only Path to Exile may be treated like Solve the Equation was. And a large number of Legendary cards will see enormous price drops. I'm looking forward to snatching up a Kaalia, myself. Seal, Extortionist, Mana Vaalt, and a few others are going to remain super expensive because they have intentionally throttled printings. But for the most part, MANY of these cards will see downs, ups, more downs... and then creep up in price. Like MTG products ALWAYS do. Because people keep ripping packs for the endorphins.

I am a Limited junkie, so I ponyed up $40 to draft Double Masters. It was a very fun draft experience! The archetypes are complex and powerful, with a feeling closer to constructed play than most regular sets. There are some very fast aggro decks in the format, so you've got to make sure you're prepared to handle them. I played Grixis control and made second place in the single elimination draft rounds at my LGS. The price of the cards I got from drafting plus 3 prize packs (I split) was close to the $40 I paid, maybe $5-10 over. I was a little disappointed because some of the people at my table opened expensive rares while I did not, but watching Prof's video, I think I may have been lucky. I am tempted to draft again this Friday, but I'll have to consider the monetary factor: I broke even the last time, and that was by winning second place, which I don't usually do. It seems plausible that if I don't win any matches, I will be down $20 or more, and I will have to consider whether that is a price I would be willing to pay for the experience of drafting again. From a draft experience perspective, Double Masters draft was memorable and fun.

The timeline impact was really helpful! Great to keep in mind when prices hit their lows last time. Hopefully the same thing happens again.
I opened a collectors display and was fortunate enough to get it at 20% off at my LGS. It was a great couple of packs (discount or no) but had I paid full retail, they would have pretty much broken even (maybe $10+ of surplus value)... At the end of the day it's a gamble and a risk to open only for value. If you know what you want then buy singles.

One LGS by me is selling collector boxes at 280 and draft at 360. The drafting price is insane. While I would love to draw one of each of the 40ish cards that I am looking for and have a bunch of others to add to my collection, it just didn't seem worth the gamble.

Yes there were big break cards who won alone, but most of the time it was really fun because the average power level of the cards are so high. it was also very smart to reprint the eldrazi in the draft set because nobody can fathom the get 11 or 15 mana in a draft game.

I was pretty excited for this set and managed to pick up a box at my LGS for $300. Among the cards pulled were imperial seal and wrenn and six, plus several other value cards at $20+. I agree that the gamble on a single pack is bad, but as an aggregate over the set the value for opening seems to be there, especially if you're just holding cards for collection that will rise back to a single price you wouldn't want to pay later.
The main disappointment I have with this set is the whales-only aspect. If you can put enough money in it will pay out, but if you can't spend much more than a weekly FNM buy-in it's simply out of budget, as are the vast majority of the reprint singles as well.

I bought one box. I’m excited to open it. I haven’t played in 20 years and got back into it when I heard about Commander. I don’t have any of the cards in this set so I’m happy to add to the collection and maybe get some gems while I’m at it

At this point I think the new new motto should be: Just proxy it!
I still believe that there should be 5 tiers of each card. Lowest one should allow cheap deck for just playing. Higher tiers should be for collectors and those that want to bling out their decks.
Maybe not the best comparison, but I think it holds some water: MtGO allowed me to play for few tix (and 5tix of that is from card loan program) EDH decks that I would've never bought in paper due to price.
If it would mean everyone is running staples since they are cheap, just add points value for those OP cards (similarily to Canadian Highlander format).

Buying singles: x1 Damnation, x1 Teferi's protection, x1 Bloom Tender, x1 Elenda, The Dusk Rose, and x4 Thought Scour (alternate faerie art). Keep up the good work professor!

I grabbed a collector's thing and draft box. Ultimately happy with what I got. When I checked I got a little over my money back, but I realize it'll drop. But I got some stuff I kind of wanted along with the extra cards I want to start putting into a bit of a collection if I can ever get organized

That music shift with the collector booster transition is “master” class

The background music at 5:58 is giving me so much Legend of Zelda the Wind Waker nostalgia 🥹

Thankfully going to be able to draft this tonight. Very much looking forward to that and then hopefully being able to finally afford some cards I've been holding out on for a long time like Dockside, Bitterblossom, and Consecrated Sphinx

My lgs is so awesome, they sold me 2 draft boxes for $260 and $280 respectively. I attended their draft as well and easily made my money back on some lucky pulls that were great in limited. It feels great to draft with high-powered cards.

I'd like to see a breakdown grade system, especially for premium sets like this as well as the usual overall grade. While you always insist on buying singles and saving packs for draft, it would be great to view an assigned grade. Thanks for the content.

@18:10 Oh, that graphic in the bottom left telling everyone to Like, Comment, and Subscribe in the style of the Arena phase tracker is incredibly clever and whoever thought of that deserves some kudos. That's a real, good one there.

My playgroup got a draft box for 330$ from our LGS and we might have pulled 300$ worth of cards......still fun to pick out commons/uncommons one at a time. As we opened the packs, we choose one and pass the packs. We used sealed commander precon decks to play a game and the winner got first pick of the box of the money cards. Fun as hell way to split a box and worth it to us.

In Australia, I got draft boxes at $257 US ($354 AUD) and collector boxes at $190 US ($272 AUD). Loaded up on both, but especially the collectors.

I haven't brought a pack in months, but made an exception here for nostalgia's sake by getting three - While one contained F O U R L A N D S which has to be the worse case scenario (foil City of Brass, the rare pillar from Ravnica, the one you always get and a bounce land) another pack had Emrakul and Smothering Tithe which made up for the price of all three.
