I am on post op day 7 and lemme tell you, this has to be the most painful surgery I’ve ever experienced. Today I’m finally feeling a little better but the pain still feels like it’s never ending!

Got my tonsils and adenoids removed.. going on the 6th day now! And honestly the pain is about the same as when my tonsils would flare up, constantly get infected, and the constant tonsillitis. It hurts but if your tonsils have caused problems for you too, it's going to be so much worth it in the long run!!! Here's some tips I wish I knew for my post operative "fun" times for others based upon my experience:
Keeping a constant ice pack on your neck soothes! I have found that those gel eye masks work wonderfully frozen strapped around my neck. It keeps the compression and stays cold for a long time.
Usually I would wake up in the middle of the night right when I started to hurt and it was convenient for me to take my meds and hydrate again. Some people get sleep during this and can't wake up so make sure to set an alarm periodically through the night to make sure your throat stays hydrated and happy.
Personally, warm foods eased the inside of my throat better than cold like ramen, chicken noodle soup, mashed potatoes...
The first nights WILL be rough y'all. You will probably have congestion out the WAZOO. I suggest keeping on nasal clearing strips on your nose and being around your humidifier religiously. And please... If you blow your nose don't force anything. The swelling will make your nose clog up with more than just mucus and you don't want to rip anything open with the forceful air blowing up your throat. I know it sucks to mouth breathe but expect mouth breathing to be the only way you can sleep for a few days :((
Always keep your head and upper back propped up with a pillow until the congestion completely goes away. Not only have I slept better this way, but it helps the mucus in my throat and chest drain properly so I'm not waking up in the middle of the night hacking up mucus(try not to do at all it could damage things that are healing) Sometimes your back will start to hurt from basically sitting up to sleep(which is what I did and still am doing) but sitting propped up does help
You will feel like you have a cold sometimes and it's hard to not cough mucus up. Vicks vapor rub has helped me so much rubbing it on my chest due to waking up in hurtful coughing fits.
Speaking of hurt, you probably won't be able to talk normally for a week or more. I was able to talk the day of surgery after it but I was too cocky because I was tripping the whole day lol. Prepare to text people to talk or use a text to speech app, they're free. Not the best, but it helps a bunch being able to communicate especially if you have someone to help take care of you.
Prepare to have some nausea after surgery whether it's from coming off the anesthesia or you get sick from mucus.. Hopefully they'll prescribe you nausea meds while recovering as well. There will be times you dry heave and it will hurt but try your best to not loudly gag causing a possible wound to reopen.
You may feel too tired to take a shower but vicks VapoShower tablets or just Vicks vapor rub on a wash rag in the floor of a hot shower help so much
Numbing throat lozenges help as well! Like this guy said, staying hydrated is the most important thing!!! I know it hurts to swallow but it'll hurt worse with dry cracking in the throat, trust me. The pain will subside some days and other days it might flare up. Just keep on truckin and know you'll be back to eating normal food again without those pesky tonsils :))

Omg, currently, in the hospital, been 10 hrs since the surgery, pain is so much I regret getting the surgery, but I know it'll be worth it in the end, pepsi, coke, ice cream and holy, so many things just waiting for me, it feels like needles are poking the inner side of my throat everytime I swallow, but this really cheered me up, can you tell me your condition now so I will be motivated to, y'know, survive. Thank you, so, so much.

In all honesty, as long as you can wake yourself up at night to take medicine you're fine. I couldn't wake myself up so I woke up in tremendous pain. Especially day 5. Some days I had to try really hard to take my medicine in the morning.
Sleep elevated. When I got mine out sleeping flat on my bed hurt my throat. Sleeping in a recliner was perfect for me.
Cheetos puffcorn is a life saver. Screw Popsicles or jello. Puffcorn disintegrates and goes right down your throat with no problems. It actually feels soothing when it goes down.
DRINK WATER. I didnt drink enough water. Gonna be honest. If you drink enough water you should have an even easier time than I did. Warm water was better than cold water for me. Cold water hurt my throat

I'm on day 7 and when the scabs comes off I get a burning stabbing pain in my throat and ear and it is EXCRUCIATING! For me personally, this operation was not worth the issues I had with my tonsils in. The recovery is unbearable. I also said to my husband a few times that I can't do this anymore. I can't stay on top op my meds because there are times when the pain is so bad that I literally can't swollow my spit. This has been hell for me!

But then one day I had my first vitamin water.. YOOOO it saved my life.. I just helped my throat so much. I would drink it so much and right after I drink like 2 bottles I ate actual food for the first time in awhile. HIGHLY RECOMMEND VITAMIN WATER.

I sip on ice water alllllllll day long because it helps so much. The only pain meds I have are Tylenol and Motrin which I alternate every three hours and they do a good job. Eating is honestly the hardest part because I know I need nourishment to heal, but eeeeeverything hurts. I got through a can of cold precooked ravioli on day 3 but it took me an hour. Went out and bought baby food today and it actually tastes pretty good lmao. Sticking to baby food and non dairy ice cream from here on out. But for real! So far not NEARLY as bad as other people have said. And after all these things gave me sepsis and tried to kill me lol. They had to go!

Currently on Day 8. I got discharged on Day 4, it wasn't super painful, just felt slight pain and uncomfortable when swallowing something. However, after got home, there's no more medication through IV drip, so I gotta consume all and that's when the prob occur. I have Gastric and the meds are probably too strong for my stomach, and not being able to take heavy food makes my gastric worse. I've been only taking porridge back home, jelly and ice cream. Finally Day 7, bout 2am, I had heartburn and gassy stomach. Tried to sleep, but woke up at 6am and vomited. The area started bleeding but it wasn't serious. Got admitted again and the bleeding has stopped on Day 7 (noon), and now I feel much better. I could talk a little bit, my throat still swelling and still feel pain once in a while, especially before the time to take the painkiller. I'm tired of porridge though. I'm afraid the stomach prob will happen again once I got home.. speedy recovery everyone!! 🙏🏻

Hi! I had my tonsils out about 5 days ago. Today I noticed that i have some holes in my scabs, not small ones, like big ones. They don’t hurt, nothing gets stuck and they’re not bleeding whatsoever. I think it’s because i tried to eat soft meat on day 3. I didn’t swallow the meat tho, I would only chew all i could and spit out what i couldn’t swallow. I don’t know if that’s the reason because my scabs are now looking quite darker and I’m concerned. Do you think this is something I should be concerned about or something I should call my doctor for?

Ending Day 4 today, pain seems to be very similar to having tonsilitis. Had the narcotic today because the tylenols felt like they weren't doing anything! hoping it gets better. As a foodie, eating sugar for every meal feels like torture. Can't really swallow grainy foods so both apple sauce and mashed potatoes were a fail for me. The alarms through the night is key!

To keep up nutrition, drink high protein Ensure with every meal or as a meal substitute if too tired and not hungry. I wish it had been available for when I got my tonsils out at 18, when I lost a lot of weight, but it was excellent when I got my wisdom teeth out a few years later. The “ice cream and ginger ale routine SUCKS! Maybe it works for little kids, but it causes hell for adults. I hope the procedure is different now, but in the day my jaw was wrenched open and I could barely open my mouth for three weeks! It took a couple days to get one finger in and several weeks to get enough movement to eat and talk normally. Good luck everyone!

I’m on day 8 and i feel so good. On day 4 i woke up at 4am with blood in my mouth and i spat up a lot of blood, that day I swallowed my scab as the blood made it curl into a ball and get stuck in the area my tonsils where. After my scabs came of, i still felt unwell but the ear pain was the worst after that. I feel good, I don’t have the ear pain or swallowing pain anymore and I’m eating again, not a lot as i still feel unhungry and not wanting to eat. For everyone getting them out the first 2 days are ok, then it gets worse to day 5 and after that you should be ok [well i was] just keep on top on pain relief, i was taking 5ml morphine every 4 hours and now I’m happy because I’m not in pain. @@lucianofrangai9549 Hey, so to be honest it was the worst!! I was exactly in your spot. It's totally normal so don't freak out, because I did lol. I could barely sip anything which was a pain, but take small sips I know it will hurt trust me😫 I'm so sorry, it will get better, I promise, don't rush anything, let it take its course and give it the full 2 weeks or more depending on your recovery. For food I was able to get down angel hair pasta, like the pasta roni in the boxes the parmesan cheese kind I loved and it was easy to get down, but any kind may work, it doesn't hurt to try, or just angel hair and make your own at home. The pain was worse for me around day 5, 6, and 7. It may vary on everyone, but just keep counting down the days, sooner or later it will be friggen over with. I feel for you, because I was going crazy and miserable. Try to get an Ice pack and wrap it in a scarf or something or even a long sleeve shirt wrap it in there and tie either the scarf or shirt around your head and having the ice pack going around under your chin and around your jaw area. Have water by your bed always even though I know it hurts, hydrating helps the process, just small sips that's what I had to do, don't try to drink apple juice, orange juice, anything acidic, everything burned me even water... ugh, but I had to force the small sips of water and I would hold my face when I swallowed. I also had to have a spit cup near me all the time, my mouth kept filling with saliva all night and day sometimes, I know gross 😫 Take your meds, if you take the pain meds they gave you set your alarm for every 3-4 hours whatever they told you to do, and set it right before the time and take it right before the pain comes back to prevent more pain. Otherwise when you're already in pain it may take longer for the meds to kick in. If you chose not to take the pain meds, I was told to switch ibuprofen and tylenol every 3-4 hours, so I would do tylenol, then 3-4 hours later ibuprofen then 3-4 hours later tylenol, and repeat. If you have any more questions ask away. I'm trying to think of everything, but I may have missed some info.

I had 5ml morphine every 4 to 6 hours and it worked! I would say day 3 to 4 are the most painful. If your scabs fall of within the first 4 to 5 days {like mine} the pain is gone by day 7 to 8. Make sure to eat soft foods and stay hydrated. Stay away from spicy foods and citrus things like lemons and orange juice, it burns! @@marcelalozano5790 hey! I know this is super late! But I'm on day 4! I currently got mine removed Thursday april 15th ! And I'm just gonna help with some tips! (If you get them or have gotten them removed) so everyone's pain tolerance is different of course but something everyone experiences after tonsillectomy is a sore throat, pain with swallowing, and ear, neck or jaw pain. So my tips my #1 tip is STAY HYDRATED!!! it may hurt SO MUCH to swallow but the pain will go down after taking pain meds and drinking like warm water. For me the 2nd day was the worst! But others experience the worst day is 3-4! But again everyone handles stuff differently! But we've got this! Good luck!

Im on day 3, so far i've been keeping up with my pain meds and everything that I need to, sleeping with humidifier, and eating soft foods like chicken, broth, mash potatoes. I should mention that I also got a septoplasty for my deviated septum, so I have a clogged constantly bleeding nose that I can't breath out of so I have to constantly breathe through my mouth which doesn't help much. But I would say that the pain for me isn't really that bad (so far)

Im having this exact surgery in a week, how long did it take to breathe with nose again after septoplasty? I am afraid to breathe with mouth only especially after having tonsilectomy because I heard that when it gets dry it hurts the most. Any tips? Thanks

    • @victorcamara2155
      @victorcamara2155 2 года назад

@@ariyann69 Gooooood luck bro XD, I think that I was breathing through my nose comfortably after a month? They put this splints in your nose that even after a couple weeks when you can start to squeeze air through them it is going to constantly feel clogged up or like something is covering them, They also put these dissolvable gauss in your nose that are very uncomfortable and feel like a massive bugger the whole time. But trust me when you start to properly do nasal rinses those are a huge relief because at first they suck because your nose is going to be swollen and hard for water to get in but once you get the rythm down you're going to see a lot of nasty stuff man.
