    Hi Hello, hope this video gave you some insight into the grading system at a dutch university! The main take away from this is that getting the highest grades is rare and what I meant with the thumbnail "why you're F is actually an A+" , I mean that what you might perceive as very very very bad like a 7 or 8 in The Netherlands is a pretty good grade! Also students usually get lower grades in their first year but it usually goes uphill from there on!!

    There are many university teachers in the Netherlands never giving a perfect 10, because, as they say, perfection does not exist. So the highest you can get is 9.

      I don't like dogmatic teachers like that. On an exam a student is tested on a tiny fraction of the knowledge in the field, it's absolutely feasible to master a tiny fraction of knowledge perfectly, so if a student does that he/she deserves a 10 on that particular exam and nothing less and not some bullshit 9 or even a 9.9.

    As I understand it, the Dutch systeem was designed to produce some differentiation between students: some questions will be more difficult than others. This makes it relatively easy to get a passing grade. But you can only get a 10 by really knowing the subject matter by heart. I would suggest that aiming for a 10 should only be your goal if: you love the subject matter, or love studying like a machine. An 8 or a 9 is a much more achievable goal. But most people are happy with a 6 or 7.

    Just finished my bachelor, and I got a few 8s and 6s, mostly 7s and just one 9. The 9 was for a class that I honestly didn't understand, at all, until the final week where we had to use a new theory for something. I centered my presentation on that theory, my essay, and my exam essay (there were no rules saying you couldn't, I checked ;). That exam essay was the best thing I wrote in those 3 years at uni. It was detailed; it refered to tons of relevant sources; and I just felt like I wrote something meaningful and correct. The next year, I had the same professor for another class and I wrote something that felt pretty average, which got me an 8... So I guess he was one of the professors who was a bit more loose with how high he graded things. Kinda devalues the 9 I got, but I still feel pretty good about it.

    Often, they don't award points for correct answers, they deduct points for any mistakes. A "10" therefore represents perfection, which is why it is so rare.
    I'd also wager it's a lot easier to get a "10" in the hard sciences, because there's less debate about what the "correct" answer to a question is.

    I did my Erasmus semester in the Netherlands and being hit with my first 6 was definitely a surprise when you're used to getting mostly top grades at your home university 😅 In Finland we go from 0 (fail) to 5 (90%+ or sometimes even more than that) and the two lowest passing grades are considered terrible, and in general you should be aiming for a 3.5 GPA or above to be considered a good student. So hearing that a 6 is already satisfactory was surprising. Luckily my grades did not get transferred, since even the 8s I got at the second half of my semester would've dropped my Finnish GPA significantly...

When i was studying for ships engineer/maritime officer .There where many subjects all graded at different levels . one subject 55% score would make you pass . with a 5.5 but another subject you might score a 73% and you would barely pass with a 6 depending on how important the subject was.

      They are not, but there are typically stats available how your grade compared to the population (through Osiris, blackboard or w/e platform is currently used). Roughly speaking a 9 is only given in less than 3 percent of all cases. And 10 equates to the top 0.1% of all students.

    The dutch school system asks way too much from kids, in ur first year on the school after primary education school (secondary education before university or college) they give u 2 exams or tests every week! while u havent even learned how to properly study for a test or exams on primary education school. In the 2nd year of secondary education u literally do not have time for yourself, once u finish one test u can already start studying for the next test that has to be made the next day. I know that planning can help with studying but planning doesnt help at all because u would have to plan out every week since u have a test every week. And then u still dont have anytime, schools think u want to study every day after school, and they think that making u go to school at 8:30am every day till 16:00 pm is fine and its easy, Alot of people dont have time to study because of that and maybe they have sports after school. On some schools if u have high enough grades to pass but u didnt complete a whole school year worth of work that u had to do in class (maybe u were sick and u didnt make the homework u missed out on) u wont pass the year. Most of the dutch children that are depressed is because of school!

    If it's a project you're working on a 10 is impossible. You'll get some bullshit that "nothing is perfect" or "there's always room for improvement". And never turn in your best work if your grades are high. I learned the hard way that they sell that work and they don't need your approval for it. I'm proud of the 9.5, but I'd rather have the money school got for it.

  • @nathanchai0
    @nathanchai0 2 года назад +5

    Thank you so much for the informative video! However, I was wondering, what makes it particularly difficult to get high grades (8-10) in Dutch universities? Is it because the standard of excellence to get those high marks are very difficult as a whole? Or is it because of the grading system itself only allowing certain people to get high grades (e.g. how are the marks/grades given, is it based on a bell curve or an absolute scale that translates to a range for how many marks are needed to obtain a certain grade (1-10)?
    It would be great to know what metric is used for determining students' grades, or are professors free to create their own assessment criteria?
    Thank you!

    • @sjors3487
      @sjors3487 2 года назад +3

      There is something you need to know before answering this question. In the Netherlands, grades differ EXTREMELY by university, as well as your major. Most of the time, a student with a natural science major is more likely to achieve a 9 or 10 than someone with a social science major. The most important reason for this is the fact that often times, an answer is straight up right or wrong in natural science courses, while there can be a discussion about answers in social science courses. To get a 10, you need to score 100% of the maximum points in an exam. As you can probably guess, it's very easy to lose 1 score point. Normally, a professor has a specific way to calculate your grade. In most cases, this will be (points scored/total exam points) x 9 + 1. In some universities, it's also possible to get a grade below one. In that case, this method is never used. This means we do not use a bell curve for calculating grades, although the university of Utrecht published information on the frequency of grades. There we can see that about 1.11% of final grades in a bachelor course are 9.3 or higher although this is only the case for passed courses. In most Dutch universities, you have to pass every subject. Only the University in Rotterdam allows you to compensate one subject with another. If you fail, you have to try again the next year. The failing grade won't count to your average grade. This suggests it's definitely possible to score a 9 or higher in every course, although very, very unlikely.
      This is the link to the frequency tables of grades at the University of Utrecht.

      @@tikket10 Universities make their own rules about graduating cum laude (or in even more special cases, magna or summa cum laude, while not all universities offer these titles). This means the amount of resits will depend on the major and university and you can find this in the regulation of education and examination (OER) of the major you're taking. Most universities do have rules about the amount of resits a student can take to graduate cum laude and it becomes more and more prevalent to have these rules. Still thanks for the extra information :)

      It's exactly the bell curve method you described, they don't want more than a certain percentile to get more than 8 or less than 5. 80% is probably between those thresholds normally. It's not tooled that way but that is the goal.

    • @transient_
      @transient_ 2 года назад +3

      It is just sufficient to pass, but it isn't an average. There are no quota where 50% has to fail or something like that, as far as I know. It's about the quality of your work, we're told. Although, if a large part of the students would get an 8 or above, it would bring up questions about the quality of the exam itself, I suppose.

    • @1998KPB
      @1998KPB Год назад +2

      At some universities, like technical ones (not to be confused with applied sciences, I don’t know their situation) there are courses where 30-50% of students participating in a class pass every year. It is seen as by the professors, and I would argue by the university, that the courses is “high quality” as only select few are able to pass. I wouldn’t say that it’s a quota universities are explicitly trying to achieve, but this statistic has been consistent, with few exceptions, but this trend has been consistently happening at my university.

      @arthurmekkes1697 Год назад +1

      Hi JOE, you don't have to be 18, you do however need to have a high school diploma of VWO/VWO+ which is an equivalent of an American high school diploma with at least 4 AP courses with a score of 3 or higher with an official end exam, multiple extra courses and good grades. Homeschooling is never grounds for admission, but there are possibilities to take an entrance exam for some majors to compensate for this. If you somehow manage to achieve that at the age of 14-15-16-17 you can be allowed to university. Universities will provide extra counseling included in the college cost for such young students as it is harder for them to 'fit in' to most social groups and the mental strain often hinders their grades in university. TLDR: there is no negative age discrimination from the universities themselves, rather support for younger students.

      Well above 8 is cum laude in my university for bachelors (i think) and
      8 in USA amounts to 4.0 GPA
      8 in UK might/should amount to 1:1 so like it’s already considered an A
      But yeah i feel like almost everyone i know graduated with grades between 7 and 8 (or maybe not but nobody complained about having less than an average of 7 , or said they had problems with applying to a master) , while like 10-11 graduated Cum Laude so 8 or above. 5.5 is considered a pass now , while I’ve seen special cases/courses/assignments where they want you to get 6 or above to pass.
      While our university is supposed to be a research, above average one so yeah. I don’t know what’s going on either 😂💀
      also I’ve seen total average people get extremely high grades, I’m talking 8.5 plus , while extreme hard workers got less, depending on who was grading (same assignment, different assistants or people grading) or in group projects so it’s very …varies i would say
