Explaining the Dutch Education System

- Sorry for the long wait. Been pretty busy with my internship lately. Initially this video was gonna be about 15 to 20 minutes in length, however I scrapped the second half due to not wanting to delay this video any longer. The second half would feature my personal experience + stories regarding the dutch education system. This part will most likely be reworked in future videos.
I'm aware this video is a little different from the usual story time videos, and therefore thus has a more serious type of tone to it, but I hope you all like it non the less.

I'm from the Netherlands I know the school system... Why am I watching this
daniël beer Same🤷🏼♀️😂
+ 😅
Same hahahahaha
I had to learn for my exams now, WHY AM I WATCHING AN VIDEO ABOUT MY OWN SCHOOL-SYSTEM!!
This explains why everyone was confused over the fact I didn't know how to ride a bike at fifteen when I visited the Netherlands.
wait wut?? We're taught that at the age of 5 or something XD its so weird that some people in other countries are not!!
FeraligatrMaster1 echt hé Kinda translations: Yeah
Never thought a Dutch person could explain this shit😂 I’m Dutch and I find it hard 😂
Uhu
Veels te ingewikkeld
Same-
You did kader if you think its hard
@@user-nb4uz7es9h i do vwo and i was confused on how it all works, what are you talking about
Lol, you’re from Noord-Brabant or Limburg, as a fellow dutchie i can hear those accents from miles away
BRABANT!
Lets go Nederland
Ja hahah
Zijn wel van die lelijke accenten
Hahaha inderdaad 😂
This reminds me of how much the American educational system needs to be fixed.
dabhdude nah man dutch systems are pretty fucked teacher can kick you wich means you have to follow a lower course
So....it motivates you to do better? That doesn't seem bad at all. ALthough, I might just not be informed enough.
Arwen marlies yes but you can still have learning dificulties like dyslexia or discalculus and you are Just going to get fucked and your grades are only going to get worse and that will slowly spiral into a degree you did not want or Just a couple of extra years of studieing
brostache oke
dabhdude I gotta agree with you dude, our Public Education system is in my opinion still the same as it was in the 1900’s when the US took an interest into educating the public. What I’m interested about is the cost of Dutch education.
I quickly want to say, after Mavo you can actually choose if you want to do 2 years of Havo to go to HBO instead of just going to MBO. Same with HAVO.
Klopt
Omg i love your vids
het is allemaal zo confusing jonge hahaa
yup, that's what I did
Boy was I wrong
A Random tomato HA HAHAHAAHHAHA nee
A Random tomato m2

A Random tomato basisschool*
So esthetically pleasing to look at! Amazingly edited :D
Also... You need a bicycle diploma? O.o
Thank you ^^
And nah not really, it's more of a "congratz, you can properly cycle without getting yourself killed in traffic" type of thing. Not a legit diploma or anything XD
it's about the same level of getting a diploma for learning to tie your shoes in pre school.
Linda Raterink That one was hard af
you dont get arrested for not having one it just helps to learn to be safe same as a swimming diploma
DanPlan ikr but you can skip school for a couple of hours🙃
Hey! Its pretty cool to see some Dutch people in the art community! Geinig.
uncle hank haha idd xD
Er komen steeds meer
Heel geinig
geniaal
Ik denk precies het zelfde! (I think the exact same!)
I got lost after the basic school part ... 😭😭😭
it confuse me the way it's divided so complicated
but it seems that the Dutch has a great system :)
Marjorie C Theoretically its good, but, it means people are really divided, like, in some schools you have a big range of these levels which means kids tend to get bullied for their level. Also, this means that the Cito test you take as a 11/12 year old determines a huge part of your life, Lets say you do really bad and end up in vmbo-b, you will either have to do mbo and hbo to get to a regular level, this adds 4 more years to your schooltime. Also when failing a year in your first year of this level type school, you go to a lower level, same goes for failing a year twice, which is really demotivating, some kids even have to change schools because of this.
ツSam woo thanks for the explanation
that's really interesting to know and what is the average age to graduate if it doesn't fail any year
Also, entering the lower level would be frustrating even for me, it might be great if they could get a second chance to those who got bad grades on the Cito test.
Marjorie C Well, the age of graduation depends on your level, but i’d say the average is 17 or 18 years old.
Marjorie C actually at most schools you have one or two years to decide witch level of education your gonna take. you have combined classes of havo/vwo and havo/mavo (the different levels) so you have enough time to chose your level of education based on your grades. also after you graduate from havo you can go to the vwo to follow that level of education for two years and than graduate. so actually the cito test doesn’t really matter. you can always go to a higher level if you have good grades.
@@Sam-lc8tg well I'm from the Netherlands and I'm 17 now and I do level 4 and I still have 2 years left so usually people are like finished at 19 or 20 years
One of my favorite parts of living in the Netherlands, was that we lived in front of a college, so every morning, groups of 20-40 teens on their bikes would flood the surrounding streets. I mean, the bike parking had like 200 spots.
Daarnaast
Geen probleem ^^
Ik hou ook van konijnen yay
JA,
Same!!
Yuunarii you have friends? OwO
lol, when I scrolled over the thumbnail, I just saw Yuu bicycling on a car and thought "This is gonna be a good video"
I'm Dutch and I still found this incredibly useful. I Basically just bumbled my way trough high school and college. XD
*take cito tests* *"you are 12 when you take the Cito test"*
Am 10 when I make the Cito tests
Aight then
FerociousFlame its not your finals, in group 8, you take your final Cito’s, or route 81 or whatever your school decides.
Eventough I'm dutch it was fun to watch :D
TechGamen! True :P
Jup xD

Nouja, zoals ik al in de video al zei: "I could go into detail how each rout works but... I'd rather keep this video under two hours".
I learnt so much from this. Thanks for a friendly, steady-paced and pleasant video
Hey, I know You? You're The Guy from The RUclips right?
i like how the secondary education routes look like:

The visuals on this video is really good. And the eurobeat jokes too.
Thank you ^^
Yuunarii, you have successfully once again kept your audience well engaged and learned about the structure of the Dutch education system. Something the US education system would greatly benefit in implementing a similar to the Dutch system. Anyways, keep up the good work 👌
Good to hear it wasn't as boring as I had expected it to be XD
And thank you ^^
This dutch system isn’t as good as you think it is
I decided to watch this because I wanted to go on a foreign exchange student trip to Netherlands and i was curious how school would work. Now I'm curious what process I would have to go through if I were to be placed in the Netherlands 🤔
Alxxandrr depends on what you’re gonna do. If you’re going to uni, costs can be 10.000 euros and even higher because the government does not fund it for foreign students. But I guess it’s not that different in America or other countries.
So far I haven’t heard of exchange students in middle/high school...
Don't even bother. The system is absolutely whacked, I would recommend you go to another country in Europe.
@@PetraVanDeijl which other countries then?
@@cruzgomes5660 How about The UK?
@@PetraVanDeijl Perhaps, what else would you have in mind
I'm suddenly very aware of how damn detailed our education system is, heck.
Isn't it a bit young to give a child the responsibility to pick an education route that they most likely would change their attitude towards throughout their teens or adolescence?
it is. And I dont like it
welcome to the netherlands, have a seat
Doctor Potato I suppose. The British education system isn't particularly better either, its just different ways of doing things. We're strictly taught the same sorta stuff up until we're 14/15 and then we get to pick like 2/3 optional subjects to get a final grade in. The options really open up to you when you hit 16 and go into College, which is mandatory now. You used to be able to leave school at 14 and then 16, which it was for a while, but now you have to stay in education until you are 18.
Yeah, but at least it's better than having unwanted shit. I'm so done with History subjects.
GarketMardener History was one of my favourites, but each to their own. We all still have a choice, I guess
For those who had trouble understanding their own national equivalents of the different options, in other countries:
- MBO is also often referred to as 'Vocational school/education'
- HBO is also often referred to as 'University of applied sciences'
You know that they both call schools where you can get a bachelor degree and master degree a university. It's rather complicated to compare it with the American standards though. Lower than a bachelor degree is mostly useless in the US, but in the Netherlands an MBO degree can get you a decent paying job comparable to some HBO jobs. The US assosiance degrees and an MBO degree are quite different.
Pjiwm
That is because HBO is not that close to "college", it is far closer to University of Applied Sciences.
Jame Gumb HBO in many cases (depending on type of studies) is called university of applied sciences here in the Netherlands as well. HBO isnt college, but we wouldnt call it university as we have something like university. But it kinda is.
The weird thing is that we also have associate degrees in the Netherlands but these are on HBO level and you need havo for them, while the associate degree in America is compareble to an mbo 4.
Woah a dutch animation channel?! You just earned yourself a new sub :)
I'm from Curaçao and we also have the dutch education system here and I couldn't have asked for a better one. I just got my final exam results last week and I'm about to graduate in two weeks and earn my Havo diploma ^-^
In the Netherlands we also have tvwo, where you have almost all subjects in English. Tvwo translates to bilingual Preparing scientific education.
my school also has this for HAVO and MAVO since we live in a brainportregion
I live in Eindhoven but we don't have that here. I'm doing VWO, but TVWO would be an absolute dream to me, since I absolutely love the English language.. And I'm planning on moving to England when getting my masters degree. Too bad :/
I call of vwo tto, i don't know about you tho.
It’s tto then
TTO*
Wait, so you go to school to actually have a life, and not pass a god damn test? Oh God how lucky you are, Yuunarii.
This shit speaks to me on a higher level
Same here in Serbia :3
really i live in the netherlands.. its shit i hate school :')
Why am I watching this I already know it😂
Brother can you help me ?
I've always been told that MBO was college and higher was university like this:
WO = academic university
HBO = University of applied science
MBO = college
Is that incorrect?
It might also be useful to add some job examples per education level as I know
Lunar This is kind of how it should look like
mbo is vocational school
college would be HBO
I didn't pass my cycling exam 😂
At first I didn't pass the theory part of the traffic exam either xD I felt so stupid because I was the only one that didn't pass it. However I was allowed to do it again and passed the second time, yay! And like the video said: I completely ignored everything I learned afterwards.
Marit Wigchering oh god lmao.
How's that possible? I did like everything wrong and was going too fast and i passed it 😂 i'm now a danger on the streets...
Gah, I keep recognizing 'almost' German in the Dutch terms with my crappy second language German education.
Like how 'Hoger Algemeen Voortgezet Onderwijs' could be interpreted as 'Höher Allgemein Fortgesetzte Unter-wis(sen)'.
Woo Germanic languages.
Hehe yeah, Dutch is basically the cheap rip-off of German, with some weird vowels incorporated XD
Hmm.. true I suppose ^^
Fun fact: With Luther, the guy who pinned his 95 theses on the church door, translate the bible to eastern German, if he had chosen the western German dialect it who basically be Dutch but with a small dialect.
A.Y. Isnt it Unterricht, not unterwis
Urvinius yes, but i tried to translate based on sound, and onderwijs matches unterweiss (wijs -> weiss -> wissen) better.
Yunaari ; You are not making Dutch friends with this answer..A typical Dutchman doesn't understand much German language at all. To use the example A.Y. did, hoher (can't find the dots..)is not more similar to hoger than higher. The Dutch language contains more French than German.(thx to Napoleon..)and due to internet the Dutch language is Anglofied more and more. By the way, your explanation of the Dutch educational system was clear but limited ( there's a type of school for almost any language , religion or human point of interest on any level and móre...) Bye !
Bedankt voor de uitleg! The Dutch integration exam now requires a section on Dutch cultural knowledge which includes a fair amount of knowing the education system and I could never keep it straight. This helps me keep everything in order!
I think you've made a great video at categorizing how the education system works :) It's really difficult to properly explain, as our system is pretty complicated in the sense that multiple acronyms exist in the Netherlands that aren't so much a thing in other countries worldwide, the amount of levels in highschool for example, as well as HBO and Uni differences. However, there are some things that I thought are in need of some clarification though. This doesn't mean that this is criticism, no! In fact, see this as an addition of sorts ;p
For example: difficulty is probably not the right term for the level of study that needs to be done in the categorized levels. I think it's a matter of different focus. You are completely right about the possible paths that can be taken, but this explanation makes it sound as if LWOO and VMBO BB/KB isn't all that hard. In fact, these kids go through hectic and tough education that's more craftsmanship-centered, where calculus and several woodworking/building etc. skills are incorporated. The amount of 'to be learned' study matter is theoretically different, not so much easier. That's very subjective. To put this into context: a few weeks ago, there's been an actual crackdown on stigmatizing of these levels. Call it progress, which I think it is.
Second: HAVO and VWO students can freely choose between HBO and Uni, especially VWO. They can choose HBO if they like it, so as you explained, this is very true. Sadly: these options are sometimes looked down upon by society and (sometimes) schools (breaks my heart). However, once HBO students have been rewarded with propedeuse (meaning: having cleared first year), they're allowed to enter Uni. After HBO, when having reached bachelor degree, they are also free to enter University Mastercourses through certain programs called pre-master if they so please. This is a link people tend to miss a lot.
Lastly: of course all these HBO courses have different types of supervision. Mine was wonderful. Subjectivism is something you have to watch out for, as you discredit entire systems, which is probably not what you've meant, but hey, Dutch folks are very quick to call you out on this of course.

HBO is NOT the equivelent of college.
It is equivelant to a university of applied sciences.
The difference between a research uni and one of applied sciences? The research uni's bachelors degree is worthless and students are meant to go for their masters.
Applied sciences bachelors degrees are much more specialised and get more real-world experience (the 'applied' part). They're roughly equal in time spent, but not even close to equal in value on the job market.
I did not know that. I thought WO was a university. This makes me feel better about going to HBO.
WO is university but contrary to HBO your bachelor's degree does not prepare you for the job market. You have to get a master's degree for that.
@@MBeckers The WO is a research university. HBO is a university of applied sciences and, indeed, a bachelors from WO does not prepare you for the job market (hence I mentioned they are worthless).
This just made me realize that I need to study NOW in order to stay on havo
Gymnasium???
I’m afraid that apart from the extra language there isn’t a difference between the two.
*Stops watching the channel for some time*
*Looks at this video*
OH GOD THE QUALITY HAS IMPROVED A LOT!
I have never actually done the cycling exam, our teacher was just like “Here are the rules, and we’re going to our camp next tuesday, so then you can try it”
I love the editing! :D

😂😂
je heet dwarf craft ...... dude
I just found out that my old school probably wanted to send me to LWOO (or praktijkonderwijs) because of my really bad social skills... I changed schools and they gave me VWO. Welp.
Lovely! My school refused to let me enter HAVO because I didn't work fast enough, I was smart enough but I never managed to finish my work on time. So I was sent to VMBO-TL instead. I still believe there is loads of flaws in our education system with, as you said yourself, people being advised to go to levels they shouldn't be in because they could achieve so much more. Also I believe they should come up with something to fill the gap between VMBO-TL and HAVO.
ಠ_ಠ aw man thats awful. Did you ever go to havo/got hbo?
Yasky After vmbo I did go to havo, however because vmbo was so easy to me I never truly put in effort. So when I got to havo I had to study and properly do my homework for once. I couldn't keep up with it at all and after half a year I decided to drop out, I was already 18 by the time I started havo. I then went to pick an mbo course I enjoy and that's what I'm currently doing. I do plan to try for hbo after I finish this course. I've been doing everything I can to prepare myself for it so I've turned into quite the nerd.
That's great! I hope you'll get a job you enjoy :)
Kind of the same thing happend to me.. Oh well, there's also a school for people who can't learn which is down vmbo basis and they wanted me there 😂 but my parents didn't want it so i got placed in vmbo basis lmfao. Now i'm in mavo. Idk what's life
I looked up the wikipedia page about this cuz I was reading a webtoon, called "acception" I think it was, and it was set in a Dutch "high school". The fact that they called it high school was confusing since I didn't think people in other countries would have the same system the US has. :v
The wikipedia page just made me more confused lmao.
I'm sending this to my internet friends bc they don't understand it when I just tell them.
Good job! You just earned a new subscriber!!!❤️
Wow that's really complex. But I think it's better having options to choose than someone saying that you should know everything before choosing something that has nothing to do with the subjects you were obligated to learn.
You still have to learn a lot of useless stuff that you'll never use in the Netherlands.
K. 1234 I think unfortunately one will always have useless stuff to learn in whatever country
K. 1234 Of course, because a 12 year old doesn't know he's gonna be a politician when he's older or something. You can however make differences between alpha (languages, culture) and beta (mathematics, science) good at studying and good at crafting. You can narrow down the stuff you need to learn, which is heavily supported as we can also pick subjects when halfway through 'continued education', but you can never stop learning useless stuff before you actually decide what you want to be for the rest of your life. If you take away that 'useless' studying, you take away options to choose from, meaning you might not be able to eventually become who you want to be.
You can't choose what advice (VWO, Havo, Mavo etc.) you get that is decided on your results in elementary school
NIO and IEP?
Nice vid i am dutch myself love how you can hear your accent when you speak dutch goed gedaan😁
🤥🤥
I love how I am Dutch but still saw the entire video and enjoyed it all the way through. You're honestly awesome I love the video! Never stop you're awesome! :3c
If you finished HAVO3 is it aloud to do every mbo, but youre not getting a diploma of “middelbare school”
what about gymnasium? feel left out now :/
feels bad man.
It's equal to vwo, if you don't include latin and/or greek, but I noticed it too
still but hurt about it tho. :/
Gymnasium is part of VWO (alongside atheneum)
>babette stop crying about a 2 month old post.
>i just like being a dickhead and see myself as superior compared to most people.
>and yes i shouldn't feel like that.
hahaha gymnasium can you only get in the 2th year of highschool
dit is echt vet goed uitgelegd
Hello, Yuunarii, thank you for this informative video! It has helped me understand what to expect when we move to The Hague this summer. Very well explained! PS: the bunnies are so cute!
I am Dutch and i have no idea how to comepare the Dutch education system with the American education system. Like in what grade are you if you have VWO in voortgezet onderwijs
Selman Reyhan its easy
VWO 1= grade 7
VWO 2= grade 8
Highschool!
VWO 3= freshman
VWO 4= sophmore
VWO 5= Junior
VWO 6= Senior.
With all these letters combined with one and other I felt like I was in chemistry class
We dont have chemistry we have NASK :)
What?
Love this kinds of videos
Thanks! Its helping me see the difference between my Dutch friend's experience and mine.
Thanks for this! I'm half Dutch living in the UK and I'd like to move to the Netherlands one day...
kom treug alsjeblieft 😀
Amazing video. Never knew Dutch school was completely different from American school.
Thank you ^^

Dylan uit de Bulten Another person bashing America
How original and creative
Chiplamlanga Chpanglarujia original or not. America shouldn't consider itself as supreme when their education gets bashed by almost every damn country
Perfect uitgelegd👌🏻
I kinda wished I learned this way, probably would have been more engaged in school if I did. And no I don't think we learn that traffic class here in America, or at least not in my state although cities/school are pretty bunched together here and also school buses.
ShinyWhisper18 I live in Belgian where we speak Dutch, French and German. In the Dutch part where I live, we also have a similar Bike traffic test but the education system is way different and harder.
Sander Broadcast still u guys are stupider on average.. how come?
'stupider' isn't a word though. And Belgians being more stupid than the Dutch is just stereotyping.
Weewou!
Ik vraag me af hoeveel andere Nederlanders hier schuilen 😈
Dank daarvoor.
Geweldige video!
Great video! As a Dutch person I already understood most of it, I don't rlly know about other Voortgezet Onderwijs things, but I do know a lot about havo and vwo, so I will explain vwo first, just more in depth.
vwo exists of many parts,
Atheneum : the basic vwo
Gymnasium : basic vwo + latin and greek
TTO : basic vwo, but everthing's in English and you will take different trips to different countries.
Havo is just one thing, but, you can take havo/vwo classes for your first year, after that year, the school will decide if you go to havo or vwo in the second year.
That was my knowledge on the subject, I myself am finishing Basis School, I'm really close to the Cito tests, but my overall school advice is vwo. They actually give you the advice in group 7, not much will change after the Cito tests, you can only go higher.
But I've talked enough. Hope this was of any use.
There's also TTO for Havo, y'know. And your teaches decides your final advice and the advice that you receive in group 7 is what they think it'll be, the definite advice is given in group 8.
xSalty_ Havo TTO is there yes, it just isnt in every school. And the advice that they give you in group 7 isn't really changing in group 8, if you do make the cito toets higher than your given advice then you can go higher, it can't go lower anymore. At least that's what the school told us .
I am dutch, and going to VWO. 😂
Good to know what would be next. Thanks!
finally a video i can show to my friends who are just so heckin confuzzled with this whenever i try to explain it
I love these! Ik ben zelf ook nederlands, and this is amazing!
I'm Dutch and I didn't even know some the things you mentioned in this video XD
Me: *Studies at VWO*
Me: *Wants to be a teacher*
Also me: *I hate school*
Again me: *Goes to HBO after finishing highschool*
Thanks, that was so helpful:)
I finaly found a video i can send to people when they ask how the dutch educational system works!!
This will save me 30 minutes of trying to explain it myself!
And i always love to hear fellow Dutch people speak English, you can always hear that we are Dutch!
Well that was very interesting to learn about.
By the way what is the name of that Minoriko theme arrange?
irornknight, it’s from “Because Princess Inada Is Scolding Me”
Ah yeah I know, but I meant who was the arranger/circle that did this particular one?

I'm dutch and its funny to see this!
Now, on this moment, I am on the Voortgezet onderwijs (secondary school)
Ik snapte t eerst niet eens, dankje ❤️
Leuke video! Echt goed gemaakt!
I went through the dutch education system I don't think it's a good education system. I don't think that your average grade in basic school combined with the cito test should determine what level of education you will follow. I think it's flawed and puts students in this category, it basically tells students if they don't have good grades or do well on tests they are not smart enough to study the higher levels of education. I actually had bad grades in basic school and had a lower score on the cito test. When I was in group 7 my teachers actually told me I shouldn't take the cito test at all because they knew I couldn't do better than getting into VMBO BB (which is the lowest level of VMBO). Fortunately my mother refused to listen to them and made me take the cito tets anyway. I got a higher score than they expected but still not great, so I was sent to VMBO KB which is just one level higher. I honestly believed I was stupid and lost all motivation to study and barely put any effort into school, so naturally I got bad grades. Something I also noticed in my high school of about 5500 students is that the fast majority went to VMBO.
Fast forward a few years later I moved to Canada and I felt like this was my chance to start over. I was so shocked when I was allowed to pick my own classes based on my interest. I started to take classes that I would have never been able to study in The Netherlands such as physics and chemistry. I learned how to love studying and got good grades, I went on to get principal rolls and honor rolls. I graduated high school and went to university to study psychology and sciences, something I could never imagine doing in The Netherlands.
Anyway my point is that it's not just black and white. There is a lot of factors that can make a student to bad at school and test don't determine what someone is capable of. So putting students in a category and limiting their choices only reinforces this narrow view. I think that students should be allowed to study what they like and not be but in levels of education. How would you know a student doesn't succeed in something if you don't allow them to study it in the first place. I also think that I was not as capable of understanding difficult subject at 12. I am a slower learner and I started to understand maths and sciences better when I was 16. So it's mind blowing how this test that you take at 12 determines what you study for the rest of your high school career.
SK Alias I agree! They said to me that I could only do VMBO. Eventually, I did that but it was way too easy for me as I didn’t have to study and still get an 8. Now I’m doing HAVO as well after I graduated on VMBO. And this costs me two extra years of ‘Middelbare school’ so that sucks when I could have easily done it right at the beginning..
However, I do think the levels are a good thing, but they should do more tests to really make sure where you stand. One test is definitely not good enough and the things you’re tested for in ‘Basisschool’ is nothing compared to ‘Middelbare school’. :)
That’s so weird!
Not only was this video aesthetically pleasing, but the information itself was well said and concise. Aside from the fact that you need to get a biking diploma (which is similar to how Americans go through drivers safety in high school), the Dutch seem to have a great grasp on the education system as a whole and is well rounded and diverse with many options to choose from in regards to how you finish high school and college. Dutch College and American college are Almost the same, but high school is completely different. You didn't really talk about it much but the American system is pretty test oriented, meaning what classes we're allowed to take and even what colleges we go to are determined by a single test. Americans have something called the ACT test in our second to last year in high school and if you do good on the test then you can basically get into any college you want, but if you do bad then most doorways are closed off to you automatically. I'm not saying the American system is bad, but it could take some pointers from the Dutch. Great informative and pleasing video, in fact this video is the reason I just subscribed to you so thank you for that.
Gingermenace actually we don't really like the Dutch system that much and we're lobbying for a more us or UK like system. After your cito, the subject you are worst at determines which secondary you should go to. You can be at vwo level in grammar, but if your math is vmbo, that's where you go. You can't exel in any subject at those schools. Which really sucks. It would be great if you can get o levels or b or a levels for different classes at the same school and exel in the classes you master. It's time to change this fd up system. There are voices in the teaching system that think so to, but until this day, my children are fd. My son is vwo level in lingual classes. But sucks at math. He was directed to mavo. Worked his ass off and is now at mavo level. My daughter is at vwo level in most classes. Sucks also at math. Struggles to keep up with math. Takes all other classes with two fingers up her nose, as we say in the Netherlands. My own story is similar.
Don't get fooled. It isn't such a great system after all.
@@I.Toverheks I agree with you completely
Mijn punt was:
Super cool, very nice to look at! One little thing I noticed: peuterspeelzaal is from their 2nd birthday, until their 4th birthday. Not 0-3, we would call that a creche or kinderdagverblijf. That is more like daycare, but kids going there can skip the peuterspeelzaal, because they already get the "play, share, take turns" stuff.
Omg your accent is so well hearing! I am also dutch y'know! Our system is a lil diffrent in Belgium.
I was just imagining a cat driving a golf truck...When 1:27 then I got excited.
I’m Dutch and I know how it works but when you see it in a video like this, it’s pretty complicated.
I can’t imagine how it would be for someone who moves to the Netherlands.
It was a great video for people who don’t know how it works.
And I also enjoyed it.😋
I needed this
What would be the equivalent to IB in the Netherlands ?
In terms of diploma's, an IB diploma is somewhat equal to a VWO diploma (according to wikipedia).
Yuunarii Ib is actually different than VWO. IB is more similar to TTO (tweetalig vwo) because in year 6 at TTO they are doing IB exams, only IB exams in english though
I got my IB lessons and exams alongside my havo. So it’s not just VWO who has it. Most schools only offer bilingual education on VWO but my old high school offered it to havo ( and recently mavo too)
tom se phhh really? My bad, I thought that there was only one level of IB
So I'm Dutch but I will write this in English. First of all: I liked your video. I can finally show my Irish friends how our education system works! And secondly: In some ways the Dutch education system has good points. But I do think there is room for improvement. As someone with a nasty case of dyscalculia it can be tough to rise in the system. I'm doing MBO right now and if I want to get a job in my work field I NEED a HBO diploma. But I'll just keep working hard. I'll get there one way or another.
This really helped me explain to my friends about the dutch education and system. How it works and all, The bicycle part was so funny. Had my laugh there!
Why do you tell the follow-up to VMBO-BB and VMBO-KB is craftmanship? As you can go to MBO with both of them only different levels of them with BB being level 2 and KB being level 2 to 4
I think the system is great but it really fucked me over ':D (if you don't like profanity maybe don't read this) everyone who talked to me for more than 5 minutes knows I belong in a VWO school, buuut I was bullied during the cito test with my misophonia (mental disorder making certain sounds unbearable. You could give me a panic attack by sniffing your nose) so I got HAVO advice. Lucky me I went to a particularly bad school and the teachers bullied me. They told me I was worthless and I shouldn't bother showing up. So I didn't. It came to a point it was special for me to attend an entire day. And eventhough I still knew everything in the books, I couldn't be fucked making the tests. The school therapist tried to make something of me, but her sessions revolved more around her than me. So that didn't help. The principle asked me if I even wanted to be at the school, but it was quite obvious that I didn't want to be there. So they just send me to a VMBO-T. I wish I was transferred to another HAVO, but this was all they could do for the piece of shit they made me. I'm doing better now, but I really wish I wasn't in this VMBO-T school. But oh well. I am going to a HAVO and a VWO school after this because everyone around me knows I can only get a job I can keep without shooting my skull out with a VWO education. Sorry to rant there.
I was also bullied at school (for different reasons), especially by teachers, and living in the UK our education system requires us to pick our subjects in Year 9 (so, students would be about 13-14 years old or so?), and I wasn't even allowed to choose what I wanted to do at the time, because my tutor straight up told me I'll fail if I chose the subjects I was interested in because I was stupid. And after the exams in Year 11 we had to enrol into a college to receive a diploma that would basically dictate our entire lives from then on (I chose to do acting, because it's what I'm passionate about, to this day, but realistically I've just put myself into a situation of basically not being able to find a job because my acting diploma is worthless). I really wish, now that I'm older, that I had taken an addition subject or an apprenticeship while I could, because after you turn 18 all courses become stupidly expensive, since after that age it is no longer the law to stay in education, so you can basically fuck off and die for all anyone cares. I can't even go to university for a different subject and take out a loan, because my diploma that I got in college dictates which courses I could do at a university (which is fair enough), but because acting is such a competitive field I doubt I'd ever find any success in it even if I went to a university at this point (not to mention most universities in England are turning to shit anyway, especially acting ones). I also basically hate people due to my severe social anxiety disorder so me finding a job at this point is a pointless errand, so... yeah, life sucks. But hopefully it'll get better some day, for all of us. It has to, right?
Keep your chin up, anyway, random Internet stranger!
Keep it up :) You'll get there.
MissMoontree thank you :")
I think the thing you should really ask yourself is: what would you like to do when you are going to work and do you need vwo in order to do it? I started as vmbo kader and did two completely different MBO education's following that. At my last MBO education all the teachers tried to convince me I needed to go to HBO. For what I wanted in life and still want, HBO wouldn't be able to really add anything for me except plunder my bank account and be stuck in school for another 4 years. Though I appreciated the confidence they had in me (and I'm sure if I really wanted it HBO would give me even more information) a high degree nowadays in the job market isn't always a guarantee for a good job. I often find employer's look at what your practical experience is then your degree as that will tell them how quickly you'll be working independently in their company.
If you truly want to go into WO then vwo is worth going for.
Else way I really really wouldn't recommend it...
But it is your decision.. go for it!
I know how you feel. My whole life is propably fucked because some shitheads (aka my whole fucking class) decided to bully me for some weird reason nobody can specify. Their words don't hurt me in any way and I don't give a shit but it's still irritating. I skipped almost half of the current school year because of these people. Every time I walk into a classroom I feel like I'm back in kindergarten. Pens, pencils, pencil cases and backbacks flying everywhere, noise louder than a goddamn jet engine and occiasional slurs screamed at full volume by some jackass who thinks he looks cool. Teachers are really nice and helpful but even they are losing it. There are also some psychologist who can be nice but they don't understand how the current world works. In their mind using a PC for more than 2 hours a day is a dangerous addiction even when it's cold outside and I don't have any money to just spend on meaningless shit like McDonald's or clother that I will never wear (tbh even if I had some I would still buy 2 t-shirts a year at max). The worst part is that they're threatning me. "If you don't improve we'll have to call child support". BITCH YOU HAVEN'T SEEN HOW MY MOTHER TREATS ME SO FUCK OFF. I can go to school but I won't work ass off for a stupid paper that won't give me anything since I'm not really qualified for any job that involves talking to people or sitting in one place for 9 hours. When I told one of them that I want to earn my money through the internet and become an indie game developer at some point he said that games are developed ONLY by big companies nowadays and nobody will buy my games even if they're good. They're just spitting in my face with misinformation at this point. Maybe they just think I'm retarded because girls usually play chep phone games and aren't involved with anything more. I don't know how people work so I'm just throwing that out there and maybe somebody will help me figure out if that's the case.
Seems more complex system compared to England's Education System. It also sounds like you have to work your ass off more in the Netherlands than you do here in England.
PinguUTAU depends on your field. Engineering will put you to work. But we were right next to a study called 'creative therapy'. Although we enjoyed watching the girls, all they did was put on loud music and dance while we were trying to figure out hydraulics, construction, planning and cost-estimates.
They quickly became known as 'free-time therapy'.
Its not that bad though. You will have plenty of free time to drink all that knowledge away.
I know this is an old comment but I wanted to elaborate on this.
Because your level of education is already determined in elementary school you can literally do the bare minimum in highschool and still stay in that level. This has created a culture of mediocrity which in Dutch we call the "zesjescultuur". So in a way, our education system is in many ways easier than that of other countries, because you don't need to constantly get good grades in order to get into a good university.
I'm Dutch but I have 2 American friends. Every time I tried to explain the Dutch school system, they didn't understand and I wasn't very good at explaining it. This video really helped, Thank you!!
There is ONE thing harder than VWO: TTO (tweetalig onderwijs (bilangual education))
It's like VWO but then nearly EVERYTHING is in english so you will end up speaking english during dutch lessons. And you get like 4 more lessons a week and TONS of homework.
lolskigaming i’ve been doing TTO for 3 years and it’s quite easy.... no more lessons but it’s just too overrated
It is not harder you just beed to be good in English otherwise you just need to do atheneum or gymnasium
I Would Love To Have Bicycle Diploma!!!
*GIMMMEEEEEE*
Lol thank you for this video, I can never explain how the system here works, this will come in handy xD
You're really good at explaining stuff! Our Swiss Education system is also very complex and I think I wouldn't be able to explain it well... I think that it is very important to let the kids decide which way they want to go and not just sending all of them to school and let everyone go to uni and then not knowing what to do afterwards. In Switzerland, the kids who graduated the secondary school (9th Grade/15 or 16 years old) can choose if they want to continue with school or doing a so called "Lehre" where you work for 3-4 days and go to school the rest of the week. They can choose any profession hey want, and after those 3-4 years they can start to work normally like any other adults. And of course you earn money by doing that.
