  • Sorry for the long wait. Been pretty busy with my internship lately. Initially this video was gonna be about 15 to 20 minutes in length, however I scrapped the second half due to not wanting to delay this video any longer. The second half would feature my personal experience + stories regarding the dutch education system. This part will most likely be reworked in future videos.
    I'm aware this video is a little different from the usual story time videos, and therefore thus has a more serious type of tone to it, but I hope you all like it non the less.

    but it seems that the Dutch has a great system :)

    • @Sam-lc8tg
      @Sam-lc8tg 5 лет назад +24

      Marjorie C Theoretically its good, but, it means people are really divided, like, in some schools you have a big range of these levels which means kids tend to get bullied for their level. Also, this means that the Cito test you take as a 11/12 year old determines a huge part of your life, Lets say you do really bad and end up in vmbo-b, you will either have to do mbo and hbo to get to a regular level, this adds 4 more years to your schooltime. Also when failing a year in your first year of this level type school, you go to a lower level, same goes for failing a year twice, which is really demotivating, some kids even have to change schools because of this.

    • @marjorie_lopez
      @marjorie_lopez 5 лет назад +7

      ツSam woo thanks for the explanation
      that's really interesting to know and what is the average age to graduate if it doesn't fail any year
      Also, entering the lower level would be frustrating even for me, it might be great if they could get a second chance to those who got bad grades on the Cito test.

    • @Sam-lc8tg
      @Sam-lc8tg 5 лет назад +3

      Marjorie C Well, the age of graduation depends on your level, but i’d say the average is 17 or 18 years old.

    • @dorrith8341
      @dorrith8341 4 года назад +5

      Marjorie C actually at most schools you have one or two years to decide witch level of education your gonna take. you have combined classes of havo/vwo and havo/mavo (the different levels) so you have enough time to chose your level of education based on your grades. also after you graduate from havo you can go to the vwo to follow that level of education for two years and than graduate. so actually the cito test doesn’t really matter. you can always go to a higher level if you have good grades.

    Top video, maar ik heb wel het gevoel dat pakketkeuzes (in het geval van VWO vanaf het 4e leerjaar) hier ook in had moeten zitten. Een E&M leerling krijgt een heel andere carrière dan een N&T leerling.
    Ik snap wel dat de video dan misschien iets te lang zou worden :)

    • @Yuunarii
      @Yuunarii  6 лет назад +56

      Nouja, zoals ik al in de video al zei: "I could go into detail how each rout works but... I'd rather keep this video under two hours". Als ik bij havo/vwo dieper was ingegaan op profiel keuze en hoe het middelbaar van leerjaar tot leerjaar werkt, had dat ook bij de rest van alle studie richtingen gemoeten. Vandaar dat ik het maar erg basic heb gehouden.

      @nelizmastr 6 лет назад +7

      Zelf heb ik VWO C&M gedaan maar ben ik uiteindelijk een HBO ICT opleiding gaan volgen (en vorig jaar afgerond). De pakketkeuze is niet dusdanig belangrijk voor mijn gevoel dat het je carrière volledig beïnvloedt, met name omdat er altijd vakken zijn die je voor je toekomstige werkveld niet nodig hebt en je niet goed in bent. Het echte leren begint toch pas na de middelbare school.
      Uiteraard zijn er opleidingen (alleen voor WO nodig) waar je bepaalde vakken voor moet hebben. Maar voor het HBO geldt dat in zijn geheel niet.

      Doctor Potato I suppose. The British education system isn't particularly better either, its just different ways of doing things. We're strictly taught the same sorta stuff up until we're 14/15 and then we get to pick like 2/3 optional subjects to get a final grade in. The options really open up to you when you hit 16 and go into College, which is mandatory now. You used to be able to leave school at 14 and then 16, which it was for a while, but now you have to stay in education until you are 18.

    For those who had trouble understanding their own national equivalents of the different options, in other countries:
    - MBO is also often referred to as 'Vocational school/education'
    - HBO is also often referred to as 'University of applied sciences'

  • @Pjiwm
    @Pjiwm 6 лет назад +130

    You know that they both call schools where you can get a bachelor degree and master degree a university. It's rather complicated to compare it with the American standards though. Lower than a bachelor degree is mostly useless in the US, but in the Netherlands an MBO degree can get you a decent paying job comparable to some HBO jobs. The US assosiance degrees and an MBO degree are quite different.

To use the example A.Y. did, hoher (can't find the dots..)is not more similar to hoger than higher. The Dutch language contains more French than German.(thx to Napoleon..)and due to internet the Dutch language is Anglofied more and more. Groetjes uit Nederland en niet meer gek lopen lullen over Duitsers en Nederlanders want er klopt geen reet van wat je zegt ! lol .By the way, your explanation of the Dutch educational system was clear but limited ( there's a type of school for almost any language , religion or human point of interest on any level and móre...) Bedankt voor de uitleg! The Dutch integration exam now requires a section on Dutch cultural knowledge which includes a fair amount of knowing the education system and I could never keep it straight. This helps me keep everything in order!

  • @boktor666

    I think you've made a great video at categorizing how the education system works :) It's really difficult to properly explain, as our system is pretty complicated in the sense that multiple acronyms exist in the Netherlands that aren't so much a thing in other countries worldwide, the amount of levels in highschool for example, as well as HBO and Uni differences. However, there are some things that I thought are in need of some clarification though.This doesn't mean that this is criticism, no! In fact, see this as an addition of sorts ;p
    For example: difficulty is probably not the right term for the level of study that needs to be done in the categorized levels. I think it's a matter of different focus. You are completely right about the possible paths that can be taken, but this explanation makes it sound as if LWOO and VMBO BB/KB isn't all that hard. In fact, these kids go through hectic and tough education that's more craftsmanship-centered, where calculus and several woodworking/building etc. skills are incorporated. The amount of 'to be learned' study matter is theoretically different, not so much easier. That's very subjective. To put this into context: a few weeks ago, there's been an actual crackdown on stigmatizing of these levels. Call it progress, which I think it is.
    Second: HAVO and VWO students can freely choose between HBO and Uni, especially VWO. They can choose HBO if they like it, so as you explained, this is very true. Sadly: these options are sometimes looked down upon by society and (sometimes) schools (breaks my heart). However, once HBO students have been rewarded with propedeuse (meaning: having cleared first year), they're allowed to enter Uni. After HBO, when having reached bachelor degree, they are also free to enter University Mastercourses through certain programs called pre-master if they so please. This is a link people tend to miss a lot.
    Lastly: of course all these HBO courses have different types of supervision. Mine was wonderful. Subjectivism is something you have to watch out for, as you discredit entire systems, which is probably not what you've meant, but hey, Dutch folks are very quick to call you out on this of course.
    -signed: a teacher.

    HBO is NOT the equivelent of college.
    It is equivelant to a university of applied sciences.
    The difference between a research uni and one of applied sciences? The research uni's bachelors degree is worthless and students are meant to go for their masters.
    Applied sciences bachelors degrees are much more specialised and get more real-world experience (the 'applied' part). They're roughly equal in time spent, but not even close to equal in value on the job market.

      WO is university but contrary to HBO your bachelor's degree does not prepare you for the job market. You have to get a master's degree for that.

      Lovely! My school refused to let me enter HAVO because I didn't work fast enough, I was smart enough but I never managed to finish my work on time. So I was sent to VMBO-TL instead. I still believe there is loads of flaws in our education system with, as you said yourself, people being advised to go to levels they shouldn't be in because they could achieve so much more. Also I believe they should come up with something to fill the gap between VMBO-TL and HAVO.

      Yasky After vmbo I did go to havo, however because vmbo was so easy to me I never truly put in effort. So when I got to havo I had to study and properly do my homework for once. I couldn't keep up with it at all and after half a year I decided to drop out, I was already 18 by the time I started havo. I then went to pick an mbo course I enjoy and that's what I'm currently doing. I do plan to try for hbo after I finish this course. I've been doing everything I can to prepare myself for it so I've turned into quite the nerd.

      K. 1234 Of course, because a 12 year old doesn't know he's gonna be a politician when he's older or something. You can however make differences between alpha (languages, culture) and beta (mathematics, science) good at studying and good at crafting. You can narrow down the stuff you need to learn, which is heavily supported as we can also pick subjects when halfway through 'continued education', but you can never stop learning useless stuff before you actually decide what you want to be for the rest of your life. If you take away that 'useless' studying, you take away options to choose from, meaning you might not be able to eventually become who you want to be.

    Great video! As a Dutch person I already understood most of it, I don't rlly know about other Voortgezet Onderwijs things, but I do know a lot about havo and vwo, so I will explain vwo first, just more in depth.
    vwo exists of many parts,
    Atheneum : the basic vwo
    Gymnasium : basic vwo + latin and greek
    TTO : basic vwo, but everthing's in English and you will take different trips to different countries.
    Havo is just one thing, but, you can take havo/vwo classes for your first year, after that year, the school will decide if you go to havo or vwo in the second year.
    That was my knowledge on the subject, I myself am finishing Basis School, I'm really close to the Cito tests, but my overall school advice is vwo. They actually give you the advice in group 7, not much will change after the Cito tests, you can only go higher.
    But I've talked enough. Hope this was of any use.

    • @xsalty_5435
      @xsalty_5435 6 лет назад

      There's also TTO for Havo, y'know. And your teaches decides your final advice and the advice that you receive in group 7 is what they think it'll be, the definite advice is given in group 8.

    • @kael9096
      @kael9096 6 лет назад

      xSalty_ Havo TTO is there yes, it just isnt in every school. And the advice that they give you in group 7 isn't really changing in group 8, if you do make the cito toets higher than your given advice then you can go higher, it can't go lower anymore. At least that's what the school told us .

    I went through the dutch education system I don't think it's a good education system. I don't think that your average grade in basic school combined with the cito test should determine what level of education you will follow. I think it's flawed and puts students in this category, it basically tells students if they don't have good grades or do well on tests they are not smart enough to study the higher levels of education. I actually had bad grades in basic school and had a lower score on the cito test. When I was in group 7 my teachers actually told me I shouldn't take the cito test at all because they knew I couldn't do better than getting into VMBO BB (which is the lowest level of VMBO). Fortunately my mother refused to listen to them and made me take the cito tets anyway. I got a higher score than they expected but still not great, so I was sent to VMBO KB which is just one level higher. I honestly believed I was stupid and lost all motivation to study and barely put any effort into school, so naturally I got bad grades. Something I also noticed in my high school of about 5500 students is that the fast majority went to VMBO.
    Fast forward a few years later I moved to Canada and I felt like this was my chance to start over. I was so shocked when I was allowed to pick my own classes based on my interest. I started to take classes that I would have never been able to study in The Netherlands such as physics and chemistry. I learned how to love studying and got good grades, I went on to get principal rolls and honor rolls. I graduated high school and went to university to study psychology and sciences, something I could never imagine doing in The Netherlands.
    Anyway my point is that it's not just black and white. There is a lot of factors that can make a student to bad at school and test don't determine what someone is capable of. So putting students in a category and limiting their choices only reinforces this narrow view. I think that students should be allowed to study what they like and not be but in levels of education. How would you know a student doesn't succeed in something if you don't allow them to study it in the first place. I also think that I was not as capable of understanding difficult subject at 12. I am a slower learner and I started to understand maths and sciences better when I was 16. So it's mind blowing how this test that you take at 12 determines what you study for the rest of your high school career.

    • @noelle4625
      @noelle4625 6 лет назад +6

      SK Alias I agree! They said to me that I could only do VMBO. Eventually, I did that but it was way too easy for me as I didn’t have to study and still get an 8. Now I’m doing HAVO as well after I graduated on VMBO. And this costs me two extra years of ‘Middelbare school’ so that sucks when I could have easily done it right at the beginning..
      However, I do think the levels are a good thing, but they should do more tests to really make sure where you stand. One test is definitely not good enough and the things you’re tested for in ‘Basisschool’ is nothing compared to ‘Middelbare school’. :)

En nu doe ik zelfs havo met twee vingers in m’n neus.. Best wel raar. Not only was this video aesthetically pleasing, but the information itself was well said and concise. Aside from the fact that you need to get a biking diploma (which is similar to how Americans go through drivers safety in high school), the Dutch seem to have a great grasp on the education system as a whole and is well rounded and diverse with many options to choose from in regards to how you finish high school and college. Dutch College and American college are Almost the same, but high school is completely different. You didn't really talk about it much but the American system is pretty test oriented, meaning what classes we're allowed to take and even what colleges we go to are determined by a single test. Americans have something called the ACT test in our second to last year in high school and if you do good on the test then you can basically get into any college you want, but if you do bad then most doorways are closed off to you automatically. I'm not saying the American system is bad, but it could take some pointers from the Dutch. Great informative and pleasing video, in fact this video is the reason I just subscribed to you so thank you for that.

      Gingermenace actually we don't really like the Dutch system that much and we're lobbying for a more us or UK like system. After your cito, the subject you are worst at determines which secondary you should go to. You can be at vwo level in grammar, but if your math is vmbo, that's where you go. You can't exel in any subject at those schools. Which really sucks. It would be great if you can get o levels or b or a levels for different classes at the same school and exel in the classes you master. It's time to change this fd up system. There are voices in the teaching system that think so to, but until this day, my children are fd. My son is vwo level in lingual classes. But sucks at math. He was directed to mavo. Worked his ass off and is now at mavo level. My daughter is at vwo level in most classes. Sucks also at math. Struggles to keep up with math. Takes all other classes with two fingers up her nose, as we say in the Netherlands. My own story is similar.
      Don't get fooled. It isn't such a great system after all.

      Mijn punt was:

    Super cool, very nice to look at! One little thing I noticed: peuterspeelzaal is from their 2nd birthday, until their 4th birthday. Not 0-3, we would call that a creche or kinderdagverblijf. That is more like daycare, but kids going there can skip the peuterspeelzaal, because they already get the "play, share, take turns" stuff.

    So I'm Dutch but I will write this in English. First of all: I liked your video. I can finally show my Irish friends how our education system works! And secondly: In some ways the Dutch education system has good points. But I do think there is room for improvement. As someone with a nasty case of dyscalculia it can be tough to rise in the system. I'm doing MBO right now and if I want to get a job in my work field I NEED a HBO diploma. But I'll just keep working hard. I'll get there one way or another.

    I think the system is great but it really fucked me over ':D (if you don't like profanity maybe don't read this) everyone who talked to me for more than 5 minutes knows I belong in a VWO school, buuut I was bullied during the cito test with my misophonia (mental disorder making certain sounds unbearable. You could give me a panic attack by sniffing your nose) so I got HAVO advice. Lucky me I went to a particularly bad school and the teachers bullied me. They told me I was worthless and I shouldn't bother showing up. So I didn't. It came to a point it was special for me to attend an entire day. And eventhough I still knew everything in the books, I couldn't be fucked making the tests. The school therapist tried to make something of me, but her sessions revolved more around her than me. So that didn't help. The principle asked me if I even wanted to be at the school, but it was quite obvious that I didn't want to be there. So they just send me to a VMBO-T. I wish I was transferred to another HAVO, but this was all they could do for the piece of shit they made me. I'm doing better now, but I really wish I wasn't in this VMBO-T school. But oh well. I am going to a HAVO and a VWO school after this because everyone around me knows I can only get a job I can keep without shooting my skull out with a VWO education. Sorry to rant there.

      I was also bullied at school (for different reasons), especially by teachers, and living in the UK our education system requires us to pick our subjects in Year 9 (so, students would be about 13-14 years old or so?), and I wasn't even allowed to choose what I wanted to do at the time, because my tutor straight up told me I'll fail if I chose the subjects I was interested in because I was stupid. And after the exams in Year 11 we had to enrol into a college to receive a diploma that would basically dictate our entire lives from then on (I chose to do acting, because it's what I'm passionate about, to this day, but realistically I've just put myself into a situation of basically not being able to find a job because my acting diploma is worthless). I really wish, now that I'm older, that I had taken an addition subject or an apprenticeship while I could, because after you turn 18 all courses become stupidly expensive, since after that age it is no longer the law to stay in education, so you can basically fuck off and die for all anyone cares. I can't even go to university for a different subject and take out a loan, because my diploma that I got in college dictates which courses I could do at a university (which is fair enough), but because acting is such a competitive field I doubt I'd ever find any success in it even if I went to a university at this point (not to mention most universities in England are turning to shit anyway, especially acting ones). I also basically hate people due to my severe social anxiety disorder so me finding a job at this point is a pointless errand, so... yeah, life sucks. But hopefully it'll get better some day, for all of us. It has to, right?
      Keep your chin up, anyway, random Internet stranger!

      I think the thing you should really ask yourself is: what would you like to do when you are going to work and do you need vwo in order to do it? I started as vmbo kader and did two completely different MBO education's following that. At my last MBO education all the teachers tried to convince me I needed to go to HBO. For what I wanted in life and still want, HBO wouldn't be able to really add anything for me except plunder my bank account and be stuck in school for another 4 years. Though I appreciated the confidence they had in me (and I'm sure if I really wanted it HBO would give me even more information) a high degree nowadays in the job market isn't always a guarantee for a good job. I often find employer's look at what your practical experience is then your degree as that will tell them how quickly you'll be working independently in their company.
      If you truly want to go into WO then vwo is worth going for.
      Else way I really really wouldn't recommend it...
      But it is your decision.. go for it!

      I know how you feel. My whole life is propably fucked because some shitheads (aka my whole fucking class) decided to bully me for some weird reason nobody can specify. Their words don't hurt me in any way and I don't give a shit but it's still irritating. I skipped almost half of the current school year because of these people. Every time I walk into a classroom I feel like I'm back in kindergarten. Pens, pencils, pencil cases and backbacks flying everywhere, noise louder than a goddamn jet engine and occiasional slurs screamed at full volume by some jackass who thinks he looks cool. Teachers are really nice and helpful but even they are losing it. There are also some psychologist who can be nice but they don't understand how the current world works. In their mind using a PC for more than 2 hours a day is a dangerous addiction even when it's cold outside and I don't have any money to just spend on meaningless shit like McDonald's or clother that I will never wear (tbh even if I had some I would still buy 2 t-shirts a year at max). The worst part is that they're threatning me. "If you don't improve we'll have to call child support". BITCH YOU HAVEN'T SEEN HOW MY MOTHER TREATS ME SO FUCK OFF. I can go to school but I won't work ass off for a stupid paper that won't give me anything since I'm not really qualified for any job that involves talking to people or sitting in one place for 9 hours. When I told one of them that I want to earn my money through the internet and become an indie game developer at some point he said that games are developed ONLY by big companies nowadays and nobody will buy my games even if they're good. They're just spitting in my face with misinformation at this point. Maybe they just think I'm retarded because girls usually play chep phone games and aren't involved with anything more. I don't know how people work so I'm just throwing that out there and maybe somebody will help me figure out if that's the case.

      PinguUTAU depends on your field. Engineering will put you to work. But we were right next to a study called 'creative therapy'. Although we enjoyed watching the girls, all they did was put on loud music and dance while we were trying to figure out hydraulics, construction, planning and cost-estimates.
      They quickly became known as 'free-time therapy'.
      Its not that bad though. You will have plenty of free time to drink all that knowledge away.

      I know this is an old comment but I wanted to elaborate on this.
      Because your level of education is already determined in elementary school you can literally do the bare minimum in highschool and still stay in that level. This has created a culture of mediocrity which in Dutch we call the "zesjescultuur". So in a way, our education system is in many ways easier than that of other countries, because you don't need to constantly get good grades in order to get into a good university.

    You're really good at explaining stuff! Our Swiss Education system is also very complex and I think I wouldn't be able to explain it well... I think that it is very important to let the kids decide which way they want to go and not just sending all of them to school and let everyone go to uni and then not knowing what to do afterwards. In Switzerland, the kids who graduated the secondary school (9th Grade/15 or 16 years old) can choose if they want to continue with school or doing a so called "Lehre" where you work for 3-4 days and go to school the rest of the week. They can choose any profession hey want, and after those 3-4 years they can start to work normally like any other adults. And of course you earn money by doing that.
