    We have had a few interactions now but I don't expect you to remember me - however I've made a decision and am going to go to college (as a 29yo man next year anyway) to learn instrument making, and I see you and Crimson Guitars as my biggest inspirations. Fingers crossed, I'll be going to the same college Ben Crow went to. I want to restore strange instruments, make strange instruments, and do it out of reclaimed materials.
    Something I don't know much about is what woods are endangered and what has less of an environmental impact. I for one would really like a video on your knowledge of such things, and anything else that is relevant (like more ethical suppliers for example, or what chemicals to avoid that are otherwise usually used in guitar building)! And maybe even how to identify those woods although there are many resources for that.
    Looking forward to part 2 :)

    • @timsway
      @timsway  3 года назад +4

      congrats on school! Here's all you need to know: Use what grows where you live or imported wood you can find in your trash. It's that simple. Also, the faster it grows, the more sustainable it is. Bamboo, very sustainable (if you live somewhere where it grows naturally). Ebony, never sustainable. It is not hard to find fast-growing, hard woods. Many kinds of maple, for example, grow quickly all over the world..
      I mentioned the ash tree being in danger from the emerald ash borer, but I THINK that is only in North America, not the UK and Europe, when Ben lives and works. I don't know about Europe's tree problems because if I start sourcing wood from there that makes ME Europe's tree problem!!
      When you go to that traditional school they will certainly tell you all about tone woods and "use this wood for this, that wood for that" because that is the way it has been traditionally done in the colonial era of western history. But that era needs to end, along with all our other planetary atrocities, or all human eras will end. We need more forward thinkers in every industry to shut these practices down.

    • @gramursowanfaborden5820
      @gramursowanfaborden5820 3 года назад

      @@timsway ash borer isn't a big problem in the UK, but "ash dieback" a non-native fungal disease very much is, projected to kill about 80-90% of Europe's Ash trees within the next 50 years. Sycamore, Birch, Cherry and Hawthorne are all good alternatives for guitars, nothing beats an Ash tool handle, though.

  • @Guilhem74

    Your out of the box approach is just so refreshing. You have to deal with what's at your disposal at a given moment instead of starting with a blank. This forces you to be extra creative, which in turn helps you come up with original ideas by such projects. Well-done!

    So glad you were able to work with the GGBO team to find a way to comfortably participate this year. Between watching you and Ben, I've come to learn that other than a few critical details, when building electric guitars, the only limitations you have are your imagination. They can look like anything and be made out of anything, and become a tangible and touchable work of art. I was originally wondering if the second neck was going to be a tenor, but the mando will fit even better. Looking forward to seeing how this progresses! Thanks for sharing!

    • @timsway
      @timsway  3 года назад

      yes, some of the big companies are finally making attempts, but it feels more like PR to me and replying to market demand. A lot of the indy/boutique builders, players, and regular guys like me really fetishize the exotic woods. I imagine they are watching this video, not Fender, Gibson, Clapton and Page. These are the people I'm trying to reach. Grandpa has his guitars and companies but it's time for a regime change. Let's make ours - and not by removing every wenge and ebony tree from the planet.

    Because of how it fits together, I suspect that a sliding electric connection like you get with laptop batteries could work. Luckily electric guitars (or mandolins) aren't exactly high energy electrical devices, so as long as there's good metal on metal connection for each of the lines (Would it be 3, +ve, -ve and ground?), there shouldn't be a problem.
    I really like the outline too, it's sharp and modern, but the basic shape is still 'guitar' and looks comfortable. A mandolin/guitar double neck also sounds like one of the more usable double neck designs, especially as the second body and neck look small enough to not get in the way too much.
    (You've also made me think about whether I want to start with making mandolins rather than guitars)

    Great intro for the build and your channel man!
    If you really, really(really) wanted to... You could epoxy up a brick of the shavings to slice into thin covers or something, lol, if you haven't already.

    Like the locking mechanism for the two seperate parts.... was wondering whether if you loosened the plastic parts a little more by sanding/finessing, as you did, but then add a couple of neodymium magnets strategically placed to actually lock the two parts in place. So the "grip" between the parts is less dependent on the plastic parts, which, i guess could wear down in time, if one repeatedly disassembled/reassembled the two sections.
    Just a thought.

      My earlier design used magnets and I found them to be less effective than I expected. I think they'd need to be really large and that would bring a whole new set of problems including safety issues and possible interference with the electromagnetic pickups. The clip so far seems pretty good and it could be easily replaced if it ever wore out.

    Very cool! (BTW, I am pretty sure you are allowed to scratch build if you want to?) I wondered why they didn't include you last year, particularly because the charitable donation aspect dovetails nicely with your personal beliefs (I would think). Anyway, I am really glad you are involved this year and look forward to the finished instrument.

      Yea, I'm kinda figuring that out now that I didn't "need" to use their kit, but it's ok. Limitations are a big part of my work theme, this just gives me different limitations to use.

    Looks great! Loving the metal guitar shape and the mandolin combo.
    Will the mando headstock shape work ok with the ash grain running in different directions?

    I'm stoked to see how you're gonna tie in the damascus fretboard with the rest of the finish.

      Me too. Not sure how yet. I was experimenting with creating a similar pattern on the instrument but it was looking too busy. I think I'll just use the colors in the finish??

      @@timsway maybe damascus accents on the pickup covers/knobs? Make the whole thing mismatched patchwork? Lazer the pattern into the body?

    Looking great!! Fine work, as always, Tim.
    I've said it before, but it bears repeating: Super glad to see you on the lineup for the GGBO Invitational this year!
    Curious to see how you connector-ize the output from the mandolin into the main guitar body...

    OK. new to your channel. Just been checking your SquWAYre videos, and will order one or two of them soon, although i am in France, so I guess shipping might be an issue. But the Original SquWAYre looks incredibly useful as a general tool and I see you do do a metric version. Hopefully back in stock soon.
    One question, is it not possible to make these with etched gradations, rather than baked-on ink markings? Would extend the lifetime, i would have thought? Or is that something that requires industrial level tooling to make?
    Anyway. Looking forward to your GGBO build! Liked and subbed.

      When you take any product to market, it's a mix of what's best and what's going to keep it affordable. If I had these made overseas I probably could have done etched markings but I wanted to keep these made in my hometown and was concerned about quality and IP having them made overseas, so I settled on this. Same issue with selling metric, I've made two batches but the shipping to metric countries (ALL other countries, lol) is cost prohibitive to most buyers (about $15USD) so they don't sell as much, making it more difficult to stock.
