- Опубликовано: 20 окт 2024
- In the third video for my entry into the Great Guitar Build Off 2021 it is time to make the Guitar Body.
The Alder body is getting an inlayed Ziricote top and there is a lot of routing to be done for all the cavities and neck pocket.

Thank you very much.
As long as I can come up with video ideas and I am able to I will keep making videos.

Hi CoraTree Custom Guitars,
Thanks man!!
My first #
I watch a lot of different guitar building channels and I have to say that your videos are some of the best. No rambling, bullshitting or trying to sell stuff. Straight to the point! 👌🏻
Hi Tim,
Thank you very much.
It's nice read you enjoy my content.
Your videos heal my soul, man.
Hi Tarkan,
Thank you very much for the kind words.
I'm pleased to learn you're enjoying my videos as much as you are.
I've built over 100 instruments, mostly basses, some guitars and a handful of other. All I have to say is WOW, nice work.
Hey Joseph,
Thank you very much for the compliment. I appreciate it a lot.
Outer body in the oven, insert in the freezer, slow setting glue to allow the insert to warm and expand into the outer. Sorry, just popped in my brain. This is going to be a fantastic build!
Hi Bert.
That trick works great with metal parts and is often used to shrink fit parts like bearings on an axle, but I don't think the same applies to wood.
If you put wood in the oven it most likely shrinks due to the evaporation of the moisture. Same with the freezer... the moisture will expand when frozen. Also if the wood is dried properly, which you need for guitar building, it shouldn't shrink or expand anymore due to temperature changes only. (not taking humidity into account).
None the less thank you for your thoughts and the compliment on the build.
@@UnquendorGuitars I saw it used a long time ago with spindles for chairs but the mass of the guitar body probably changes the physics quite a bit. Always good to brainstorm all the ideas!
That is an absolutely gorgeous looking guitar body, the natural binding looks perfect!
Hi Joseph,
Thank you very much!
Nice to read you like the guitar design and wood choices.
I have been following you for a year now and I see that you are becoming increasingly familiar with your own working method. Much more relaxed unless the top has to be glued into the body. That remains a nerve-racking job. As always a nice piece of craftsmanship
Hey Richard,
Thank you very much for the kind words and it was good seeing you again this week.
I hope you enjoy your new Guitar!!
I probably say this every time, but this might be my favorite guitar you've built so far.
Hi Mr Waffles,
Like always, thank you very much.
I like to try and improve myself and the guitars with every build. Good to know it also shows on camera.
Another excellent video, Daniel. You have exactly the right balance of building action and description, and your guitar is looking amazing. I think there are a lot in the competition who could benefit from following your format. I hope you get the recognition you deserve.
Hi Simon,
Thank you very much for the kind words and your support.
It's nice to read you are enjoying my content and are recognizing the effort it takes to make these videos.
That is exquisite. I have tried many of those techniques and failed to produce that result. You are truly an impressive builder. Good luck. This is a top contestant in my book.
Hey Ray,.
Thank you very much. I really Appreciate your support!
Daniel ....my compliments!!! Let the top fitting the body is a very tough job....i can imagine that moment....smile or cry!
Hey Nino,
Thank you very much!
Yes it really is a smile or cry moment.
I can't state enough how impressive your build is. Your skill and technique have me pulling my wife into the office every couple of minutes to show her what you are doing. I have never wanted to own a guitar so badly in my life. Sadly, I am currently living in China and aside from location, I am sure I could not afford such an amazing guitar. One day!!! Anyway, thank you for showing off this beautiful guitar.
Hi The Storyteller's World,
Thank you very much for the compliments.
How nice to hear you pulling your wife into your office to watch me work on a guitar.
Shipping an instrument to China might prove challenging indeed. Maybe the shipping not so much, but you receiving it in good order.
Maybe the day might come at one point. You're always welcome to contact me.
You're most welcome and the pleasure is all mine.
@@UnquendorGuitars when I move back to the States for sure. Thanks for the kind reply.
The body of your guitar is nice enough by itself, but that top. That is absolutely stunning man. GGBO was one of the BEST things to come out of 2020. Looking sharp.
Hi ZitherBeast,
Thank you very much.
Nice to hear you like it.
Hi Daniel, the Ziricote top is absolute amazing!
Hi Adrien,
Thank you very much.
Never seen anything like this. It's amazing. I'm blown away.
Hi Dave,
Thank you very much. I appreciate it.
My mondays pleasure, the Unquendor episode. Great work!
Hi MrForgelune,
Thank you very much.
And how nice to hear my videos are part of your Monday routine.
This video captivated me every second. I am very grateful to you that you speak in a (for me) clear and (despite your Dutch accent) understandable English. This makes it very easy for me to understand what you do, why you do it and how you do it.
.
I think your shape of the guitar body is great, because you do without the often common (but in my opinion disturbing) offset between the upper and lower cutouts on the neck. I first saw this in a similar form on John Petrucci's "Majesty" guitars and find it very comfortable.
.
Your design with the recessed book matched top should actually work very well on a neck-through and/or semi-hollowbody guitar. What do you think?
.
I am already very excited about the next part, please don't let us wait too long 🙏😉👍
Hi Burkhard,
Thank you very much.
It's nice to read you're enjoying my content and are getting some useful information from my videos.
The recessed top would work very well on a semi acoustic, haven't tried it though. And I believe a neck through should be possible in theory but I'm not sure if I would like to see the neck wood in the false binding. That is also the reason why I stopped inlaying the headstock veneer when I started using laminated necks.
@@UnquendorGuitars Based on everything I've seen from you so far, Daniel, I'd be confident that you could come up with a visually appealing solution even with a neck-through, perhaps by providing the lower end of the neck with a contrasting finish running crosswise to the neck. But of course, it's all a matter of taste, time, and resources. And I never had anything to criticize about your taste so far, just the opposite.
You’re a master Daniel! I aspire to be half as good as you one day. Keep up the good work mate!
Hey Phil,
Thank you.
If you keep practicing and building you should get there I'm sure.
Perfection.
Hi Steve,
Thank you!!
14:05 RHS hole just scraped in.... Loved that inlayed top, very clever use of the templates..
Hi Glen,
Thank you very much.
I would totally buy an "Unquendor Guitar", it's a beautiful masterpiece ... 🙂
Hi KGB,
Thank you very much I really appreciate it!
Send me an email when interested and I'll see what I can do for you.
Very nice work Daniel - I can see how inlaying that top would be stressful, but it is worth it to get such a gorgeous look!
Hi Andrew,
Thank you very much.
And you are 100% correct. It is both stressful and rewarding at the same time.
Inlaying a guitar top... you are a madman! Much respect.
Hi Hand Tool Builds,
Maybe a little mad.. but I think it's worth the effort.
Thank you for the compliment.
@@UnquendorGuitars yes, definitely worth it. It looks great!
Bravo! This is by far my favorite build of the GGBO2021. Your methods are so precise and the guitar body came out beautifully. You make me feel like I too can build a guitar. 5 Stars.
I HAD ta hit that like button. It was sitting at 666 and I am sure you don't need a bad omen hanging over this beautiful build
Hi Borgonian Evolution.
Thank you very much!
Dude, that body is a thing of sculptural beauty... Having started my GGBO build, your attention to detail and accuracy constantly astounds me
Hey Reality Studios Custom Shop,
Thank you once again for the compliment.
Good luck and have fun building your GGBO entry!
@@UnquendorGuitars It is most definitely deserved! Thanks, I am very much enjoying it
Absolute amazing, Daniel. You nailed the wood choice as well, beautiful.
Hi Eldereth,
Once again, thank you very much for the support.
Nice to hear you approve of the wood choices.
I think this might be your best build ever Daniel. It's coming out perfect. Wow !! Very impressive.
Hey Bert,
Thank you very much.
It just might be the best one yet.
I try to improve myself and the guitars with every build and this one is turning out pretty well.
Incredible. Considering you were able to make a template with a 1mm expansion that perfectly fit your body (!!), I'm not at all surprised your neck pocket rout worked first time. Beautiful stuff.
Hey Cia ran,
Thank you very much!
It took some time to get the templates the way the are now, but worth every minute spend.
I'm glad to read you're enjoying the build.
I am now a fan. The inlaid top is genius.
Hi Tim,
Thank you very much.
Seeing the neck fit the body so perfectly was so satisfying. Great work yet again!
Hi MTem,
Thank you.
The joint itself fitted perfectly but it amazed me the neck was perfect on the first try.
I've never seen an inlayed top before, very cool
Hio Rob,
Thank you very much.
There's a first time for everything they say.
Another piece of art in the making 👌🏻
Hi KMarieVermeulen,
Thank you.
It wouldn't be possible without you.
Excellent work Daniel. I'm very happy to see you in the build off. You have my vote for the best! I haven't been able to get online very much recently So it's a pleasure to see you building such a beautiful guitar. My hats off to you. Keep up the great work and I hope you take home the trophy 🏆. You build some of the best I've ever seen. Peace brother.

Nice to see you again and thank you very much for the compliments and your support.

Thank you very much.
Good to hear you like the design.
OMG what a brilliant way to drop a top!
Now THIS is unique !
Kudos
I thought the last video was good, inlaying the top is something I have never heard of and it looks amazing!
Hi Trevor,
Thank you very much.
Daniel, I said your last build (apart from active pups) was my favourite! You have just surpassed it by far! Its stunning!! Please don't use actives in this build but even if you do you have my vote !!!!
Hi Martin,
Thank you very much for your support. I really appreciate it!
I'm sorry to say, but this one is also getting Fishman active pickups.
Personally I think they sound amazing, are very versatile and have no problems with hum, hiss or anything like that. The technologie for active pickups has improved over the years so they don't sound lifeless anymore. But I do appreciate anyones preference for passive pickups as well.
Once again, as one who has severe OCD, I love how your stress of accuracy is evident. That top is just stunning.
Hey Joe,
Thanks man!
Being accurate is, in my opinion, both the best way to prevent mistakes as much as possible and to get the best guitar possible. Might also be my OCD and what not...
Man, really love this guitar...great freakin work!
Hi Richard,
Thank you very much for the compliment!
I have figured out how you make it look so simple. You have totally mad skills! Top job Daniel!
Hi David,
Thank you very much!
I still have a hard time believing it myself to be honest.
Hi Daniel well done Sir! That looks fabulous! I really enjoy watching your videos. You explain things very clearly and make everything look so easy. And I also enjoy your choice of music! Can't wait to see how it turns out. 😊

I do make weekly videos. Unfortunately I'm not in the position yet where I can work on my guitars and videos full time. I still have to maintain a regular full time job.
That's a blood lovely bit of ziricote 😎
Hi A D Finlayson Guitars.

And yes.. it is very nice piece of Ziricote.
And if my wife reads this, which she will, I have to mention she picked it...
@@UnquendorGuitars I'm good, my build is coming on well after a bit of a hiatus. Uploaded 2nd episode on Saturday and hoping to have the neck finished next week. I do love ziricote, not the easiest wood to carve though!

Wow, amazing work.
Incredible accuracy and stunning guitar all round...good luck
Hi Philip,
Thank you very much!
First off I would like to say the guitar body is looking very nice. The only thing I might have done differently if I were to attempt something like this would have been to have routed channels for the wiring before putting the top on other that that looks fantastic. Just would have saved having to now drill through to fit wires and the pickups and switches and pots.
What fun. Thank you for your videos! That top is gorgeous!

Hi Mick,
Thank you.
My workshop is so small I need to keep it tidy to get anything done.
Let alone also fit the studio lighting and tripod in.
Gorgeous wood, amazing wood work, this guitare will be wonderfull !
Hi Favre Jean-Michel,
Thank you very much!
I hope it will be.
Just a thought, when you’re pressing in the top inlay you might be fighting the air trapped underneath because it’s such a tight fit, maybe a small hole drilled where the pickup cavity will be would ease it a bit
Hi Colin,
Thank you for your thinking along with me.
However I think the control cavity in the body is sufficient to let the air escape while pressing in the top.
It's mostly because of the ridiculous tight fit and the top has to go in as straight down as possible to stop it from jamming in the cavity. It really is a press fit.
@@UnquendorGuitars ha ha! Completely missed the big hole underneath !
Seriously great work. Looks fantastic
