- D&D Gnolls are vicious humanoid hybrid hyenas, but that doesn't mean they can't be loved too! In this video Tony & Sean go over a playable and fairly balanced home brew race from DnDBeyond.

Gnoll Fighter/Gladiator
Found as a pup/sole survivor of a raid against a gnoll band.
Sold to someone who figured they could have this gnoll's lifespan extended by a mage so that it can be raised to be a fighter in gladitorial arenas and make their new owner rich.
Earns their freedom by rising up the ranks but remains a gladiator because they enjoy the fame, fortune, and glory that comes with being a pit warrior. As well as taking a liking to having fans and even being treated with some level of respect, despite being a gnoll. However also being a somewhat civilized warrior having been raised by humans or perhaps some other humanoid race.
Eventually decides to travel to New regions, taking up jobs as a sellsword, caravan guard, or the occasional pit fighter, and eventually meets a band of adventurers whom the gnoll will then follow.
Basically a very charismatic gnoll fighter whom loves attention, adventure, and finds the heat of battle to be thrilling for they savor it as a moment to indulge in their bestial nature, while using it as a form of self entertainment.
Has played (playtest) as a gnoll for over a year now. 10/10 will play again. Barbarian is an even mix of Taz, Stitch and Beast Boy from Teen Titans Go! Fun meter maxed!
Has also played a ranger, thug (rogue/fighter), shaman (nature sorcerer), witch doctor (nature warlock).
Played as horribly impatient, bratty, sometimes immature and argumentative but loyal to the players they call a part of their "clan".
Most fun I've had in 25 years of playing!
I love gnolls
I played a gnoll druid once, and he was a sweetheart
He was the “heart” of the group
And everyone loved him, including me
Thing is... i fell in love with the Gnoll as a race because i can't help but picture Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed from the lion king... more so the animated version's of them then the newer live action one's but just the idea of playing a hyena who's genuinely a kind and friendly guy that has a very dark and brutal side to him/her is so appealing to me because... the down right SINISTER laugh echoing over the battlefield is a clear as day sign that someone screwed up
I recently came across a forum that mentioned that gnolls weren’t always considered to be the creations of Yeenoghu. There’s a deity from 2e called Gorellik who was the gnoll god of hyenas and hunting before Yeenoghu began intercepting his followers.
The Forgotten Realms wiki mentions that Gorellik’s followers “respected only force and... gradually turned toward the evil side of the giant pantheon” even before they started worshipping Yeenoghu, so even though there’s not a lot of info about him and that same wiki lists him as Chaotic Evil, I feel that Gorellik was perhaps a tad more neutral leaning (or just slightly less CE) than Yeenoghu. As such, I figured Gorellik may be a possible alternative deity for an adventuring gnoll or that tribe of “free-gnolls,” basically for any gnoll who doesn’t want to be associated with Yeenoghu and get back to their roots. (Though worshipping Gorellik isn’t likely to be much easier; apparently he became “more savage and feral as his power declined.”)
Everquest is the reason I fell in love with gnolls. Fippy is my hero. His determination is godly and deserves more recognition
Me too! Well I guess that’s obvious from the video lol. You know they put him into a special event for Everquest 2 at one point and even made him blue like the original. :)
@@HomeBrewCrew I haven't played EQ2, but I still play original EQ. I'm so happy to hear about that though. I'm making a gnoll pally for my brothers campaign and his last name will be Darkpaw, the same as Fippy
I think I read about a tribe of Gnoll's that serve the Raven Queen somewhere...
Anyway nice vid!
I'm playing a NN half-gnoll fighter. In combat I have to refrain from feasting on sentient creatures and in dialogue almost everything comes off as intimidation.
Haha nice! I love it! Good luck holding back on your temptation!
-Sean
what do half gnolls look like?
So it depends on the source material you use but mine are essentially leaner, shorter gnolls. Cleaner and generally not as scarred. Attributed to a less savage lifestyle.
@@nathanhall2012 do they get any human traits?
@@fatgunganmemes7627 They can. It's a roll of the dice (pun intended). They can range from the old school wolf man from black and white monster movies to a more traditional gnoll with one or two more human features like softer human eyes or bare skin rather than fur in certain spots. Honestly it's your call. Mine are generally more gnollish with a cleaner look and an intelligence in their eyes rather than the raw savagery normal gnolls exhibit.
DM:
The Gnoll Rageborn is on your favorite couch; in your favorite spot.
You want to sit in that very spot.
What do you do?
Cuddle and share the spot
Because Homies help Homies
3:22 you could find an item or get a boon that allows you to make a wish so you could extend your character's life that way
I usually interpret the life expectancy
More as a medium, then the define
Sort of like how back in the day it was common for children to die in the factories so the life expectancy for humans was 30
Gnolls got dragged down to about 30 when it’s really probably 75 or 80, because they’re dangerous in general
Not dogs also my favorite monster also i need this as a race i would play a knoll every time.
DOOM:
Rip & Tear; until it is done.
Gnolls:
Arive.
Rip & Tear.
Cackle gleefully.
Leave.
Repeat.
Gnolls playing DOOM...
What could possibly go wrong?
Quick point “Hyenas or hyaenas (from Greek ὕαινα hýaina[1]) are any feliform carnivoran mammals of the family Hyaenidae /haɪˈɛnɪdiː/.” Basically they have both k9 and feline like traits. Never been a fan of them (killing them sure but does that count ;) ) but very happy to see here is a community of fans.
Yes I know... I was going to mention that. But I remember them in other depictions as more canine as well so we just went with the dog mock up. But your absolutely right!
And I suppose killing them counts. I just personally love the tribal, rabid, aggressive nature of them myself. -Tony
WRONG!!!. Hyenas are not members of the dog or cat families. Instead, they are so unique that they have a family all their own, Hyaenidae. There are four members of the Hyaenidae family: the striped hyena, the “giggly” spotted hyena, the brown hyena, and the aardwolf (it's a hyena, not a wolf).
@@invidia44 Aren't Hyaenidae closer related weasels and badgers than feline and canine?
@@Morhgoz No, hyaenidae is in aeluroidea, which is a few levels of organization above felidae (felines). The closest thing to hyenas that isn't extinct would be the two mongoose families (and the fossa). Mustelids (weasels, badgers, wolverines, otters, etc.) are their own thing, not in aeluroidea or even feliformia at all (they're more closely related to canines. actually). Here are some charts: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feliformia#Phylogenetic_tree
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnivora#Systematics
The families with the cross next to the name are entirely extinct.
Anyways, I think I'll put my two cents in with regard to (spotted, specifically) hyenas. First thing to note: they're smart. REALLY smart. As in, they can train each other in new skills about as well as many primates, and actually perform better in many tests of cooperative problem solving than primates do. Yes, that means that they are better at working together as a group than wolves are. There is also no truth to the myth that they are primarily scavengers; hyenas tend to be more successful hunters than lions, and less often have need to scavenge compared to them.
Something else to note is that social structure in a hyena clan is extremely complex, with rank being mostly hereditary (and to the extent that it isn't, it's decided by coalition building; if leadership is in question, the female with the largest and most loyal group of friends is going to take charge). Female spotted hyenas are on average larger, stronger, and more aggressive than males, something that's not particularly common among mammals. From a standpoint of sapient races based on hyenas, this would probably complicate things with their interactions with other races; a gnoll might assume that humans and others tend to be very different with regard to gender interactions and gender stereotypes, with the notable exception of the drow.
As far as culture goes, I would have the gnoll be semi-nomadic hunters, probably with a heavy emphasis on mounted archery, in the vein of the Mongols. Like the Mongols, they would be flexible and mobile (in both a tactical and strategic sense) in warfare, using feigned retreats and encircling maneuvers to lure enemy formations into unfavorable positions in order to defeat their army piecemeal. Like the Mongols, they would be less useful in sieges due to their specialization and emphasis on outmaneuvering their enemies, both in hunting and battle. There would need to be allowances made for environment (savannahs, semi-deserts, and low-density woodlands rather than steppes) and magic, and they would quite possibly use something other than a horse as their favored mount. They would probably be highly sought by certain factions (certainly by whoever's a stand-in for Romans in the setting) as auxilliaries. As an aside, does anybody else find it strange that every setting is so weirdly particular with regard to which cultures it draws from, and what it takes? They throw together cultural trappings, weapons, and armor that are literally a thousand years apart from each other, and others which are six thousand miles apart, yet they have hardly anything in lore or gameplay rules for one of the most important types of soldier for the Japanese, Mongols, Huns, Scythians, Sarmatians, Parthians, Arabs, Persians, Chinese, Tatars, Turks, Avars, etc.?
Anyways, I see them as being both pragmatic and intelligent enough to use any type of magic they can get their paws on, primarily druids and clerics but also arcane spellcasters (sending their brightest to study in mage schools in exchange for the service of some mounted archer auxilliaries, that sort of thing). They'd be aggressive, of course, but probably less specialized in melee fighting, directness, and brute force than (for example) minotaurs.
@@alexanderflack566 Thanks mate for your answer! Spotted hyenas and hyenas in general are one of my favoured animals that walk the earth now! They are just so great and cute! And I will use info you provided to improve them in my setting, which is based to 1500 BC time of modern Persia. Thanks mate!
I'm running a Home Brew dark fantasy Disney themed campaign, and all of Disney dog characters that have appeared in my game have been gnolls.
Someone get us a thesaurus! Lol geez if someone took a shot for each time we said vicious in this one they would be drunk by the end of the video. >.
I'm more bothered that he thinks a hyena is a dog it's not even a canine.
My boss bought a knoll mini on a wolf and painted it he Carrys it everywhere he go for no reason and trys to get everyone around to look at it and they be like yup now go away
Wow, strange... but I approve!
-Sean
@@HomeBrewCrew I'm.here with the guy now lol
In my world, Gnolls(Fangs of Yeenoghu) are witchdoctor characters.
I think I will add to my version Pack tactics and Skill choice of Athletics, Nature or Stealth. Otherwise as all other stuff shown here, maybe change age to similar of orcs, as that makes more sense to me.
G N O L L S
It doesn't have to say you can't chain it because the rules for bonus actions say you only get one per turn, and I don't think action surge gives you another bonus action.
I was going through some of the lore in regards to this creature. The flavor text miss Soundlike they enjoyed ripping apart the weakest people first just to get the bloodlust going. It would be great if they have had the ability to detect in an encounter who was the weakest NPC.
Hi Arie!
That would be kind of near actually. Maybe a once-per-day/long rest where you can survey foes within a certain range and the DM tells you which of them has the lowest HP. Good stuff!
-Sean
@@HomeBrewCrew I could see you being once a day ability. I read how they specifically craves sentient brains. Do you think it's like an addiction. Or do you think it's something they need in order to stay smart themselves?
Ah that's interesting because we reviewed another Gnoll race in our Book of House review and the Gnoll in that one has to make these sanity checks whenever they take damage. If they fail they essentially enter a deeper level of ferality. Maybe it could be flavored so that they need to hunt or devour brains to satiate their blood lust? Hmm, lots of options!
-Sean
I really like your idea. I wonder how feasible it would be to turn that into a racial feat -divining a creature's power level? I really don't mess with that kind of stuff myself. My nephew always tells me how bad i am at home brew, so i don't even try anymore ;)
Being a new player (but very interested in creating a Gnoll Pally), I felt that maybe I would build her with Half-Orc stats with a debuff on INT or WIS to make up for instinctual habits and the "young lifespan" (since it seems they generally live 30 years, and mature very early, leaving me to believe they'd be gullible or naive)
I was going to play her as a chaotic good, actually lol, but for a lawful good diety. (Again, chaotic ONLY because she would be prone to instinctual violence. Though, in this case, with the long term goal of good for the innocent or god(dess).
I decided on Half-Orc build, because I can translate her to a vanilla game, and not make loyalist DM's too angsty.
Is that an acceptable idea to bring to the table? Or would it perhaps be reserved to using the monster handbook to forge her with unique stats based on the monster block?
Advice welcome, I'm brand spanking new and definitely want some reply from regulars and advanced players.
I think the whole half-orc idea isn't too bad. But you might have to tweak and add to it to make sure it's not just a re-skinned half-orc.
You could always consider swapping some of the half-orc features for features that Gnoll NPCs or homebrew Gnoll races have. But also you're RP'ing will play a major role in establishing its Gnoll-ness as well.
-Sean
@@HomeBrewCrew Aw man, that's awesome to hear back. I was a little worried they wouldnt carry over.
Thankfully, though, I realised I could have a little turd kobold and experiment with this artificer class. My goal is to have a little toy(bomb)maker. A lot easier to play for me, a little more character to role-play (definitely more fun to voice), and a lot more trash to loot, turn into something, and sell or use as a trap or small AoE.
If you have any advice, for that idea, I'd love to hear it. Especially for balance. An idea I had was to use cp as shrapnel, like a penny-bomb, to do piercing or maybe bludgeon damage (i've never looked into firearm damage).
Hyenas are not dogs.
But yes, Id love to play a gnoll druid who rides a giant spider. Thanks for the info. I will look this up and present this to a DM. 😆🥰🤸♀️
GNOLLS!!!!!
maybe they can make a leveled bite like for dragonborn but not as much, like +1d4 at certain levels.
I ducking LOVE gnolls ❤❤❤
I just posted on another channel about the idea of a gnoll party, working to help the clan. I figure if you watch the show Vikings, replace the Norse with gnolls (gnolls have shamen, so that covers the seer character), and there is pretty well your starting plot. May have to swap Ragnar's hope to settle on farm land to hunting grounds, but otherwise I think it works.
Personally I've always seen Gnolls as vicious killing machines, since they're basically an extension of Yeenoghu's will. Fun to throw at PC's though
I have a player that this would be perfect for - basically a vicious killing machine
Gnoll PC.
Found newly born by an adventuring Bard (previous PC) who doesnt have the heart to kill it. Keeps it as a attack dog. Later realises they it has intelligence. Raises them as their kid.
Years later, the Bard has returned to rule his noble house. Gnoll temporarily changes their appearance to appear as their human daughter. The rest of the time, they appear as the daughter's bodyguard as a "Tamed" Gnoll.
As a Gnoll, they have no regard for Human life but act like they do and don't attack or eat random people to protect themselves.
TLDR Adopted Gnoll becomes noble and pretends to be their own protector. Personally is like that of Dexter from the show of the same name.
They/Them, is considered Female.
Paladin; Oath of Conquest.
Lawful Neutral or Evil?
I love Gnolls and I'm grateful to those who took the time to create them as a class. That said this feels very sort of generic and lacks interesting and standout traits for me. Plus as a fighter (which is likely the best suited class) you've got lots of competition for that bonus action. So Rampage may rarely get used.
This may be the wrong thing to ask on a homebrew channel, but would anyone know if Southlands Heroes for 5th Edition that covers Gnoll player characters? Is that book sanctioned by Wizards of the coast? Trying to decide on whether to buy it...
It’s not made by wizards of the coast, it is made by kobold press, a company that makes Homebrew stuff for DnD, would you know if a physical version of south land hero’s exists or not if so I’d love a link to order it.
I made a gnoll barbarian who is a puppy barbarian he is aggressively happy 😊 ☺ 😄 xD his rages are excitement xD
They're pack animals, but don't have Pack-Tactics?
Good point! And it's a very common thing we'll see in NPCs/monsters, but typically a lot of creators will pass this up in PCs for balancing purposes and/or to put in other, original racial features. But hey, you could always find a way to homebrew it in your campaign!
-Sean
I think Pack-Tactics would make excelent sense to gnolls!
I think Pathfinder might have mentioned "Pack Tactics" in Gnolls.
No, they aren't dog people. A hyena isn't a dog.
Hyenas aren't dogs, damn it.
Hyeanas people are far from dog people. Hyeanas are the sister group to mongusts and closer to cats than to dogs. Seals are WAY closer to dogs than hyeanas are to dogs.
Seals are what now?
Or you can play D&D 4e and play an official Gnoll ......
I’m the 130th person to like
