This is a plan that I've had for some time, pick up a used car that needs some work and make some videos and now I have a 1997 Subaru Legacy to play with. I've already started making some videos with this but I though I would introduce this fine machine to you in this little video. I've already been asked about a head gasket video and I know this thing needs a timing belt so I guess we are on our way.

ETCG
Having owned two Subarus and doing an incredible amount of research on them, I have learned a lot so I would be happy to share my knowledge of them with you and the ETCG community :). Definitely looking forward to these videos!
nice... I miss my '99 Impreza AWD even though it was automatic and kind of boring-- that car had 140 hp and was pretty torquey for what it was. I used to tow motorcycles with it on a 4 x 8 trailer. It had the famous gas tank filler neck rust and body rust starting so I sold the beotch. Unstoppable in the snow. I will buy another someday -- preferably one from a dry- non snow/salt climate. Will be tuning in to your updates.
Those old L legacy’s are awesome.. the long wheelbase in the back and folding back seats make a great camping car.. no tent required fits two people comfortably
I have a 1999 Subaru Legacy Outback, which looks identical to this car. Mine is very low mileage. It only has 63,605 miles on it at the moment, yet it needed a lot of work early on. I had the engine resealed, replaced all 4 brake pads, had an alignment done and the tires rotated, had all of the belts replaced, replaced a knock sensor, and changed all of the fluids. Now it's making a "brrr" sound when I take left turns, so I need to get that checked out. Anyhow, I'm glad you have a Subie!
Glad to see you got a subaru Eric! I've owned three now, a 91 Legacy Wagon, a 96 Impreza and a 00 Legacy Outback and love them all, think I have the bug for life now. Always keen to do my own work and have done but know you'll have something new to show me.
Enjoy it :)
Eric,
If you're pulling the motor to do or investigate head gaskets/ timing belt you could easily drop a 2.5 block in right underneath of those 2.2 heads. The increase in displacement AND compression will make the motor a torque monster and it will run fine on the factory ECU. Add a pair of Delta performance ground cams and I believe it would make about 185hp/tq and be almost a sleeper. This is known as a "frankenmotor" if you want to do any googling on it. Cheers!
Definitly nice to see the owner left you all the factory equipment even a first aid kit. First time ive ever seen that.
As soon as I saw it, I typed 'Subaru head gasket video soon' in the comment box, then you mentioned it was already blown and spoiled the fun!
Timing belt is fun on these, too, just pull the engine to do both jobs.
Here in northern japan, They have these cars all over the place because of all the snow and ice we get here and they are great. Whats sad is you can buy a 1997 Subby here and it is in great shape. People here really take care of their cars. I have a 2000 Legacy B4 twin turbo and its one of the best family cars I have ever owned. Looking forward to more on this car.
I just got a '96 legacy in August...All I was going to do was replace a bad wheel bearing...but since I have it apart, I'm doing the axles, tie rods, struts + mounts and sway bar bushings...big bucks.
Eric-
According to what I have read, your car's engine was known for bad head gaskets, which was fixed in an updated gasket. Even if the gaskets are good and still stock, with this being ETCG, you might want to swap them just to be safe.
That also happens to be my favorite subaru! I have always wanted one but, oil change and spark plugs are about as much as I know how to work on on the boxer. Is it a 2.3?
so thankful for ETCG, I'm looking into getting a Legacy of the same generation at the moment.
What a deal, Eric! Look like you will have a lot of fun working around that car. Congrat!!!
so thankful you're on here posting these helpful guides especially with the legacy which I also have (1999) since new. You've been a great help. thank you!
also meant to mention just went over 300,000 miles
I have the same car, but as an Outback. I swapped the engine with an ej22 because of the headgaskets. The transmission also has a problem with the Duty C Solenoid, which is a pain but doable in a day.
Sweet Deal Eric ---- the last head gasket job I did was my 90' Lumina 3.1 V6...still working on the 89' Honda I picked up for the kid for 200.00 great running car needs a brake job...had to catch up with the Matco-Buba last week as I broke my 24" long 1/2" drive ratchet ( you'll have that ) sweet wrench - Paul got me fixed up....the Subaru should make some great vid's
wetsand 400>600>1200 then buff to shine with buffing compound of your choice, i used Autosol which is a chrome polish but can be used on basically anything. Took about 1,5-2 hours per headlight, did it by hand.
Nice dude !
Just bought my first Subie.
02 Outback.
I've heard that if you need to do head gaskets to stay away from the single layer oem, and go with either the 6 star, our Fel-Pro mls steel gaskets as the oem's don't last.
Yep, I do have a Subaru, but a lot older than that one :) it's a 71 1.3L Boxer engine, model FF-1G. Nice one you got there, it's rusted a bit, but the bodywork usually is pretty good on those Subs. Have fun with it!
Plenty of vids to shoot on that! I did a timing belt with idlers on one of those, Delco kit came with a very nice instruction sheet.
Eric thanks so much for your videos, last night i was able to fix my 90 acura integra distributor with a junkyard oem one!Never would have done it without you, probably would have dropped 600 bucks on one from honda.
Yeeeees! I got a '98 Impreza RS that has a very similar engine (EJ25D) as this EJ22. I also have a blown headgasket. I'll be doing all the seals and a timing job on the thing this coming August. Look forward to seeing your video for guidance.
Eric is so excited over his new subie. I almost got one but some one else bought it. But my manager got a brand spankin new Subaru Legacy.
I have a 2000 Honda Civic, but before that I also had Subaru Legacy Sedan but from 1992. That was my first car and I loved it. But it was too damaged, very sad. I loved the 2,0l boxerengine, the AWD and the doors. Mine had also a 4 Speed Automatic transmission. You made a good deal. Keep on doing your work. Greetings from Germany. ;) Oliver
Sounds like it actually runs pretty good. Should be a fun project.
Quickie head gasket check:
Warm it up with the radiator cap off.
Then (carefully) have a trusted friend hold the brake, put it in gear and open the throttle for a few seconds. (Use common sense, good judgment, don't stand in front of it, or burn up your transmission.)
Massive 'air' bubbles shouldn't start coming out of the radiator neck.
Another sign is the heater going cold when loading the engine, like when climbing hills.
First thing I do with any car I get is remove the front seats, get a carpet cleaner with a hand tool extension, and go to town on the carpet for a couple hours. Which leads to detailing the dash, etc. You'll be glad you did when its over :)
Oh and Eric, my 96 does not have rear headrests either. if you pull the bottom of the rear seat up and put the backs down it will fold flat though and give you alot more cargo space.
You should really buff those headlights up, fairly easy job and it makes a ton of a difference. Did it on my car a few days ago and all i can say is that now the low beam shines as brightly as high beam did before :)
Looging forwards to whats coming!
That's a awesome deal! Even with the blown gasket you could still sell it for parts and a make a bunch on it!
Thank goodness for the tailpipe extender!! Adds like 50bhp or something. I read it on the internet.
As this car has the 2.2 engine not the 2.5 I would be very surprised if it had a blown head gasket. The 2.2 engines were virtually bulletproof and had very few problems. The Outback models of this vintage had the DOHC 2.5 that had internal HG leaks, then when they switched to the SOHC 2.5 in 2000 they had external HG leaks. So I doubt it has a head gasket problem, although yes anything can happen. A timing belt video would be great though.
well, eric did state in a couple of his videos he really enjoys the feel and control of a manual and he definitely knows how to drive a MT. i personally will probably always need at least one MT in my life. there are nothing wrong with autos, there is a place for them, but MT is the real definition of driving, my friend : - )
Hi Eric! I'm glad I bought Forester last December and I'm glad it had leaking head gasket and it had 124k and timing was from factory and I'm glad that I went to youtube looking some Subaru gasket staff and I'm glad I've ran into your channel and now I stick with it! I love your channel. YOU ARE GREAT TEACHER AND ENTERTAINER .
But I do not know how to vote for you. I "like" your every episode but I do not know how vote for you.
Thanks!!!!! I' dirty
Subaru's are good vehicles. My family owned an '87 3 Door Coupe (Subaru's term for it), it had the 1.8L AE82 4 Cyl. engine, Auto Trans, but sadly FWD only. It lasted with our family for nearly 200,000+ miles (on top the ~100,000 it had when we bought it). I rebuilt the heads once, radiator and replaced the Timing belts every 60,000 and it never gave let us down. The last time we had the engine part (lost compression), My dad (the owner) decided that it wasn't worth repairing. :(
So lucky. I have a del sol 1995. When i was younger I loved this car! it still runs like brand new. but now im older, back issues, no room for more than 2 people and no room for a lot of groceries. i would give anything for a nice 4 door car again! or even a 2 door with a back seat! my del sol has been babied. but like i said, i have no room to do anything. and being 6'1 its very hard to get in and out.
Have been catching up on your older videos. I just bought a 1996 Legacy 250T EJ25D. I've been taking the bus all week :( I didn't get any dog poo with mine, but did get the original manual and a damaged head - yey. Engine being pulled open now. .
Replacing a rear window motor would be awesome, I have a '98 Legacy Outback and the right rear motor's going, but I don't want to just rip it apart and get myself too deep into it (I hate doing interior work on cars).
eric that is awesome...i would do a 5-speed swap. if you do decide to do a swap you should definitely do a how-to video. i love how far you have come with your videos and i watch everyone of them. Thank you Eric the car guy!
Awesome on getting that car, Eric!
The Subaru Legacy 3rd gen (1998-2003) has a chassis which is the same on the Subaru Impreza! I don't know if the same thing applies on the 2nd gen (1994-1999) or if it has it's own chassis, but I think it's also based on the Impreza of that era, which is an awesome thing! Although it's an automatic, which I think can be swapped to a manual (I'm pretty sure you'll be able to do such a thing).
It seems that car has pillarless doors? Pillarless doors are awesome!
Talking about the spare wheel used to be mounted over the engine... Every old Fiat Panda had that too, causing the wheel to deflate in a matter of WEEKS.
Does the front headlight work fine? it looks very fogged
Woot woot great car. I own a 96 Legacy wagon, 2.2L, can't wait to see your videos.
Farewell to ETCG's loyal Subaru, i sure will miss seeing it in the background or even when it was in the spotlight. It will be missed!
Nice trade! Just did head gaskets on a 2000 2.5 rs, and they are actually not that bad to do. there is a tsb on head gasket leaks, and the fix is to add subaru coolant conditioner hahaha
Rear seat head rest cost extra, and I didn't see it listed on the sales slip.. LOL
That wouldn't surprise me if they cost extra!!!!
Hope you enjoy your car.... get it running sound, little body work, paint then presto you
have a very nice reliable vehicle....
.
Merrie-Merrie
they had head gasket issues then up to early 2000's i work in the factory that builds them alot and they told me the factory was adding bars leak to cooling systems to try to alliviate the issue. he said there was pallets of bars leak.
love the sound of the boxer engines. Nice and low pitch roffl
Can one of the videos be how to properly detail an engine bay? I've seen/heard many different things about how to detail it properly but I'd rather hear from you on what's safe to do in the engine bay and what to avoid.
new wheels(rims/tires), oil clean engine, polish headlights, polish on paint, clean interiour. filters, spark plugs, fix whatever that is wrong.
should be quite alot of easy tasks that should put the value up pretty well :)
I think the guy who go the new engine got the better deal. Still I'm excited to see some videos on it!!!
Oh hey, nice color! Well, I think it'll be a lot of fun, can't wait for the next videos!
that is a 2.2l ; They don't develop the usual headgasket leaks till around 300k miles. Usually oil leaks with these.
i picked up a manual Gen1 legacy sedan (Liberty here in AUS) for a bottle of vodka and a bottle of wild turkey, still had rego and was in good condition. They both run the EJ22 engine. looking forward to seeing what u do with it. my clutch is goin so do a clutch swap pleeeease :D
Nice score. Want to see how you fix the fender, video!
@BMXwannabepro Exactly what I was thinking. Eric needs to do some junkyard picking and come up with the needed parts. To bad Subaru's are somewhat uncommon which would make the swap more difficult to source.
@MrImacarfan As he said in the video, he was given this Subaru in exchange for replacing the engine in the white Civic of his previous videos.
I dont have a subaru boxer, but I have an alfa romeo 145 boxer that needs fixing up the motor.Cant wait to learn something new.Greetings from Croatia :D
I really like this car and after Eric Cleaned it it was so much better.
future videos: Subaru mods including twin superchargers, nitrous and upgraded floor mats. You can do each addition as its own video. That's 3 video suggestions laid at your doorstep. No work on your part except the installation of twin superchargers, nitrous and upgrading the floor mats.
A cargo cover - comes out and hooks in, so that you can hide the body...
I mean, protect you stuff! Yeah, you had it right the first time Eric. Silly me. :P
Interesting trade Eric - love to see where this goes. I've heard that these are prone to get bearing/head gasket issues - so we'll see how this turns out.
Great stuff!! There's something about boxer engines that gives them that much more character. Hope you get it back in top shape :)
This is actually a pretty cool project car. I can't wait to see the upcoming videos on this new toy. =)
Adjusted for inflation that 1997 $22,602 sticker price would be $33,560 in 2015!
Can you show us a little about how all wheel drive works?
Definitely want you to do a diagnostic video of checking for a head gasket leak.
Maybe add UV dye to the engine and transmission, drive it a few miles, and then pull out the motor/transmission as one unit. Then use a UV light to pinpoint all of the leaks but pretty much change every seal you can on the whole thing to not have to mess with it again; assuming compression tests come back OK.
If you can, find a wrecked one with good interior (leather maybe?) for under $500 and swap the whole interior; the dog hair will never fully come out of there.
@nutschTM So much truth to this! Used to do this when I cleaned cars for a living. Still requires persistance, but it's the best way yet.
The Legacy continues at Eric The Cat Guy!
I have spent much time on youtube (some might argue too much...) and I have never seen a video showing how to swap in a manual transmission in place of an automatic. I would love to see one because I want a manual, but the truck I want is no longer made with manuals...
I have a subaru.. 1997 outback wagon! I have the head gasket blowing 2.5.. looks like you have the non head gasket blowing 2.2.. Very strange if it does have a blown head gasket, unusual. Mine is a 5spd std. but you can't complain for what you paid. 'The beauty of All Wheel Drive!" :)
My Subaru is identical to this one down to the color. It's a fun little car, handles good.
you should do a video on seafoam by taking apart the top end, then running seafoam and see how it works
i heard those subaru boxer engines are a pain to work on
Hey Eric, I really like all these Subaru videos. Can you make a section on your page with all the videos in this series ?
Man eric im a fan, i love hondas but i crash my delsol and i got a great deal on a subaru impreza 95, i have cuestions on how to change the timming belt in my impreza has 265000 miles and still runs like a champ. Thanks man
i got a auto 2.5 thats got a blowin gasket but swaping engine for a subaru b4 ej20. havin some trouble with engine removal so if your going to remove engine could you please make a vid of it. cheers
Not really a repair video as such, but maybe a video on how to get rid of the corrosion on the wheels?
@michaelm815 Bad Design on the HG's in these years.. But they updated the Design i believe.
My last car was subaru impreza, very strong engine if looked after well
yea dude its super charged 4.6 with just like an intake and stuff, it has nice chunky tires on it and it will still just fucking leave a nice 11 patch for as long as you want. you can bo goin 50 mph and you can posi them both ahaha like after you come out of a corner say 15 mph slam the gas but you have to (sweetspot) it and that will give you tunnel vision hard while you can hear that super charger whine too its a fucking beast
Awesome I had a 96 Subie sedan, BEST car I've ever owned, Japanese tank.
I have a 2000, Outback, manual transmission. Had to replace the engine and transmission in it. Why do Subaru's have head gasket issues when they are under 150k???! I was dissapointed at how much work we had to put in it. I am still including a warranty on it. Never know!!!!
Eric I recently did the big end bearings on a 97 mitsi gsr. crank had nothing wrong with it. So replaced the bearings but when I was putting the conrod ends back on my mate who was helping, over tightened the bolts. Instead on 14.7 foot pounds he did them to 147. Only on one number1 rod. Started her up and the bearing knock slowly came back after a few miles. My question is, if i get new bolts and new bearings (again) would the knock not come back. Did over tightening fuck it?
Hello, Eric.
I have a question for you...
Does it get any easier putting things back together? I've been doing mechanical work for about 5 months now, and it has definitely gotten easier to remember where things go since when I first started...but I do have some jobs where I have bolts left over. On a big job such as an engine transplant, it's so hard to remember where each and every bolt goes...especially when the car has been worked on before and has random bolts in it.
What did you end up putting into the Sube, moneywise and parts wise. What about the blown head gasket and. Did someone give it to you in lieu were the rings OK and did it burn oil ?
Did you get the car instead of money for the engine job on the Civic ?
i own this exact car can you show how to remove the head light lenses and best way to clean them please theyre very cloudy and theyres so much stuff on them that looks like i could hurt my car so please do a vid on it its actually about mine and my passangers saftey cause it doesnt illuminate much to be honest and i need to get it off to atleast do a semi clean so i can see better
I have 1997 lagacy awd station wagon with 280000 miles and still running good and getting average 27 MPG.
looks like a fun car to play with. Looking forward to seeing this car gettin fixed up (mainly so i can learn how to fix it haha)
cant wait for the repair vids on this one!!!! subie for life!!!
Something like this a good canidate to fix up than resell make a lil dough than go buy more cars for etcg vids?
hi..first comment on Ericthecarguy's channel..cool place tho! a subaru 97! yay! cant wait. always been intrigued by these cars and their cult following. i have a 97 lexus es300 (dressed up v6 camry)..anyway had a question... maybe you can help.. Saturn SL2 /SC2 199-2002...been thinking about getting one.. you know they dont dent and all. any advise there? yes., no, never do it...? see so many on the roads still but never played with a saturn before..
FYI, the L trim in the 97 Legacy doesn't come with rear headrests.
my sister has a 95 and runs great is awd actually looks better than that one hahaha i have changed the timing belt and the water pump twice they are very good cars dependable and durable i am looking forward to see the repair videos
hey eric, whats the best way to diagnose a rod knock or lifter tick in a 98 Legacy 2.2?
@ThisIsNotSharyn But, I am just asking because when I think about having bolts left over, it gets me really depressed about going into this field as a career.
Does it get easier?
The first time i did an oil change on one of those cars i almost had a heart attack. after draining the oil and refilling it, when you start the engine it makes a high pitched screeching noise for around 5 seconds.
Yo, I’ve got the 97 legacy “outback”. No idea what the difference is, they look the same
hello. I need some wisdom and advice. if possible. I haven 2006 Ford Ranger with 3.0 liter engine. I have blown the motor up with only 99k miles. it had ran out oil. still a puzzle since I only drove 30 miles a month. but I have found a 2004 Mazda 3.0 truck motor with 54k miles. will this motor work in the 2006. and if so how many problems would make it worth. the. second piece of advice could I have the motor that the rods went thru the bottom be rebuilt and have no expected motor problems
