Same girl same, I've tried and tried but I cannot get into Dickens' reading. I just genuinely don't enjoy his writing.

I totally agree with you with the 1st book (Lord of the Flies). It didn’t excite me, I couldn’t relate with the main character and I could only manage half of the book. For Charles Dickens, if you can’t even enjoy Great Expectations then I wouldn’t even attempt to read a Tale of Two Cities (Only able to read about 10 pages.) Another ‘classic’ I would avoid like the plague is To Kill a Mockingbird. I was able to finish the whole book but it was so damn boring.

Btw - are you named after the F. Scott Fitzgerald book, Tender is the Night, or Tender is the Flesh?

I love wolves that’s why I read White Fang and I agree with you. It was so difficult to read about this poor animal being mistreated. Jack London was an animal rights activist so I understand the point he was trying to make but there was just too much detail for me to like the book or read it again.

I personally really enjoy Dickens mainly for his character work and themes, but I found Hard Times soooo boring and can't remember a single thing about it 😂

I also didn’t enjoy Tess. I found her extremely melancholic and passive and it was irritating me.

Of the books you mentioned, I only read Tess and I loved it. I guess it really depends on whether or not you like tragic stories because I do and I think the tragedy was what I liked in Tess. How a young girl is mistreated by fate and other people so much that she feels like she doesn't deserve good things. I also think her passiveness was great because it underlined the fact that as a woman she has less power to decide for herself. And I think it shows how it is almost too exhausting to even just get your hopes up.
I have to say I was kinda disappointed by Great Expectations. It's not a bad book by any means and I had fun, but I didn't feel any deep connections to the characters and the plot. Same thing with Metamorphosis by Kafka. Yes, it is interesting, but that was everything I felt towards these.
Another one is Frankenstein, but I really want to give this book another chance. Because I greatly enjoyed the plot and the discussions, but I didn't enjoy the writing. I have to say though that this was one of the first classics I've read and English isn't my first language so I probably needed more experience to thoroughly enjoy it.

I love listening to people not liking books, especially classics. It's so fun.
My least favorite book is The Scarlet Letter. It was a school requirement. All the people in the story seemed either dumb or boring, or both. I understand why it was written, fortunately it's not written for me.
The Great Gatsby was also terrible because nothing the characters did made any sense and it was all so boring, however I think I'd be able to understand and like it better now.

Dickens’ shortest novels like Hard Times, Tale of Two Cities, and Oliver Twist are among his worst. Read Bleak House! LCL is again, one of DHL’s worst. Tess is wonderful but is a tragedy through and through. She’s not a pure victim - she was seduced not raped. Otherwise the thematic complexity Hardy is working with goes out the window.

Tale of two cities is good! But if you don’t like dickens, you don’t like him.
Lady C’s Lover very much stinks, I agree.

Thank you for sharing your opinions. London´s one is really too cruel for me too. I didn´t manage to finish it as a child and I never got back to it. On the other hand Tess is the book which I do not like to read as a hobby but I find it fascinating as a window into the period´s way of thinking. But I would not recommend it as a holiday read for sure.
