I saw Kenny 4 or 5 times live from the early 80 at my father's place in Nassau County, Long Island thru, I think 2006 in Patchogue, N.Y. He was awesome from the beginning and got better throughout his career. My favorite vocalist period. The world is a lesser place with his passing. I miss him dearly.
Kenny had such a smooth, soulful voice. You can literally hear the honesty in his voice when he sang. You can feel the love he has for his music. Back in 1987 I went to see him; he was performing at Fat Tuesday's in NYC (a small jazz club). I yelled a few songs at him to play (he didn't). But after the set he came to my table, shook my hand and said he was sorry he couldn't play some of the songs that I asked because he didn't have the right instruments to play them (I think he actually meant that he didn't rehearse the songs with the musicians that were playing for him, lol). RIP Ken, I loved your treatment of the songs you wrote and sung and will occasionally play them until the day I leave this earth...
Wonderful. I was fortunate to see Kenny many times, starting around 1973...Circle Star Theatre, Boarding House in SF, The Keystone Palo Alto. Saw him in many settings - solo, duo, trio. He was the best. Today I dedicated "She Moves, Eyes Follows' to Lynn whom I married on 7/23. Her and Kenny are singing together in Heaven.
It is hard to describe how important Kenny Rankin's music was for me as a late teen/young adult. I have recently rediscovered this man's remarkable sound, after years and years of not listening to it. It renews me! I so love his music and am grateful for it.
I saw Kenny in the early 80's at Sacramento State. He played a solo acoustic set and reported that he was living the road life out of his pickup truck. I was taken by how much music he gave to the audience with a vocal and guitar. Like everyone in the room I wished that the show could have gone on longer...
I Love Kenny Rankin's voice and am sorry I never got to see him perform in person. Still I have listened..so carefully..and will continue to. A simply beautiful , Heavenly voice , underated ..for sure.
@mqblues I was there! the Recital Hall at a time when some duff had removed the "I" and it said "rec tal" Hall. He spoke in such a low register but sings so high. I have love kenny since the 70"s and feel very luck to have seen him at least once in my life. God Bless you Kenny. Rest in Peace. You gave us beauty.
I had heard the studio version by Kenny and the live version with the larger string section (from a live DVD) but not this version. This really highlights the nuance and subtlety of his guitar playing sometimes overlooked because of his glorious vocal skill (we should all have such a problem, LoL). And the bass player (name?) has some insane chops. Another Kenny Rankin favorite to add to my playlist.
> @jimmyarnold1026 The gentleman playing the upright bass is Brian Bromberg. I am posting this in August 2024 - Brian is still alive and you can find many videos of him here on RUclips playing his bass, both electric and upright. I saw a video of Kenny and Brian playing together in this same concert playing a song called "Velez" (sp?) that I am seeking - do you know where I can find this whole show? Indeed; we lost a Golden Child when we lost Kenny Rankin far too soon.
@ImpossiblyLost I saw him twice at Jazz Alley in Seattle... I even spoke w him and shook hands w him before his performance... nice guy (very approachable).

Truly one of a kind. His sound is so unique and full of love.
Man, oh man, that voice! Amazing guitarist, too. I am so lucky I got to see him perform up close. Soooo thankful for recorded music.
When I was a teen, I saw him live, he opened for a band that I can't even remember. But I'll never forget Kenny Rankin.
Nice. I saw him open for George Carlin.
He was simply musically beautiful in every way. His rare genius remains with us in our minds and hearts, forever.

I first saw Kenny Rankin on the Tonight Show in the 70's and was an immediate fan. You will be greatly missed, and I will listen to you until we meet.
Michael Southern does anyone remember that crazy Norman Lear show Kenny did the talking Adam and Eve song
He is now still playing in heaven for a huge audience
Beautiful human being...beautiful music.
