Saw Kenny live in Connecticut about 15 years ago. He was an incredible talent. His voice was his instrument; a gift from God, forever silenced. Thank you Ken.
This is magical and masterful. The most incredible instrument Kenny had was his voice. The way he interpreted each song and made it his own was mind blowing. Kenny rest in peace my dear friend, as you were my friend. Your music will live on forever in those of us who were honored to hear it. Please say hello to my Brother Bill in heaven and sing for him. He will love you.
Kenny was a phenom. I sat practically face to face & was in awe with his vocal & guitar skills. That was 50 yrs ago. I'm still in awe. He never got his due. Always underrated, but not to me. RIP. Missed so much.
At 2:50, my late acquaintance Joe Beck. I sat near him a few times a week and I didn't know he was a guitar player. I saw him on TV one day and realized he was the same guy voted Playboy's Jazz guitarist of the year in the 60's.. A quiet, nice guy. Wow, explosive hands, wish we had a chance to play together. RIP fellows. Gonna play 'Silver Morning' and weep.
starchildstrider When I was in college I lived with 2 of my teachers, conservative men in blazers. They had cats like some have mice, so when they heard 'someone killed a cat' by Rankin, they were hooked. Then I turned them on the Al Stewart, following the cat theme. They could understand the words so they became enamored. Finally, the moody blues. We'd drive around Litchfield County in the summer when they had off, in the LTD, I was in heaven and 'the boys' (they were even old...60...like I am now... when I was 22) were happy. Yes, I knew Joe from a club which includes many other artists. It's free and our primary purpose was to stay sober. You are a bright person, best wishes to you.
Loved KR since seeing him on the Tonight Show in '72...and had a chance to see him in L.A. in 2004. One of his most beautiful songs (so many) was one of his last...Here In My Heart. RIP, very much missed
“But I do have a song to sing . . . and a love for a bow and string . . . ” What's a Berimbau? Why, a single-string musical instrument from Brazil. The song of that name, was written by one of my (several) Brazilian jazz guitar bossa nova heroes, “Baden Powell de Aquino (who died young, age 63 in Rio, his hometown). On one of those random shuffle offerings at RUclips - as if to say, “You love Kenny Rankin, and you love jazz sambas - especially the ones with a funky beat - so . . . bet you never heard it before!” As I've noted earlier on this thread, my favorite strings arranger the late Don Costa gave Kenny Rankin his first set of guitar strings; years later, Don - who did all his arranging with a guitar in his lap - orchestrated Kenny Rankin's greatest album with 'House of Gold' - my favorite, obscure Hank Williams song. Kenny was a great guitarist/song writer but his recordings featured even greater soloists - including a few as little known as Kenny. Like the featured soloist on this video. Thankfully a “comment” from a fellow picker anticipates my question, “Who IS that electric guitar soloist? (and) Why don't I recognize him? He is so gifted!” Turns out, like Kenny Rankin, he's another guitar great who has left us: EarGuitar (3 years ago) "At the 2:50 mark, that is my late acquaintance Joe (not Jeff) Beck.
