Doja cat before being Doja cat is Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini.
They are build by the music industry, we tell them how to act, how to be dressed ...

I think one of the wild parts about Doja saying her previous pop music were just stupid cash grabs is that it’s MAD DISRESPECTFUL to the artists that had features on her albums. Like. Rude as hell.

I was the same way, but for a short period in high school and over one band. It came to the point where I was thinking about them 24/7 in every aspect of my life. That was pre 2012 so i think it was just before Stan culture really took off. Only the biggest celebs had stans with fan accounts. for example, justin beiber. it wasn’t as common for so many artists who don’t, in my mind, really stand out. Even calling yourself a fan of an artist now a days is hard because of this negative stereotype. Like, I love Beyoncé, especially her new house album, but I’m sure as fuck not spending $300 for nosebleeds to see her. I can spend $300 on a 2 day music festival pass with multiple artists. Her stans clearly, have been and are willing to spend even thousands just to see her.

Ethan is getting less heat not because people don’t think what he did was wrong but because people care about him less. A random guy cheating on his wife is nothing new, but Ariana, who passes herself off as a feminist that everyone perceives as having been a good person doing what she did is far more shocking. It’s that simple and it’s not misogyny.

Big Sean's ex also insinuated that Sean left her for Ariana. Her song breakup with your girlfriend is allegedly about Sean and his gf Aiko. Ariana has a pattern of doing this. Personally I feel like I can separate the music from the artist and still hold them accountable. I lovvvvve Aris music. Her music was pivotal in so many emotional points in my life, and I don’t see myself just disliking her albums because of her controversy. However; whereas once I was a huge fan and would’ve dedicated myself as a fan a little more, I certainly think this changed things. as a kpop stan seeing this dissection of parasocial relationships reaching levels of self awareness from consumers is interesting because it really highlights the differences in marketing in western industries versus, say, the south korean entertainment industry. in america our celebrities may be turning into influencers but they’re still mainly selling their work as a product. in south korea the music is only a part of the package, their lives are also being sold too. because fandom provides such a sense of belonging to a lot of fans, it makes sense that they begin to feel entitled to their idols’ lives when it is linked to the thing they pay to consume. the idea that someone’s actions are surprising to us is just a reminder that despite how much you love your fave, you don’t know them, and it hurts, which explains a lot of the denial some fans might feel and will just go on supporting that person, no matter how problematic they’ve shown to be. social media has blurred too many lines between celebrity and the average person i think.

HOWEVER, I will now always view her differently, and see her in a more negative light. I wouldn’t trust her as a friend, but we aren’t friends , and she doesn’t know I exist. But I def think my opinion of her has changed and it’s disappointing for sure. As for doja , I’m not interested in her new album and as a fan of her past work it’s insulting and so dumb to me what she said about her own fans. So what if it was a cash grab? All the attention Ariana is getting is not misogynistic. She isn’t Monica Lewinsky. People are noticing her pattern of behavior and are rightfully calling her out on it. Nobody is ignoring Ethan either. This scandal may likely make it hard for him to find work. His claim to fame is the SpongeBob musical…he didn’t have much stardom in the first place and can easily be erased from the public eye. People know him more from this scandal than the musical.
Ariana on the other hand has a pattern of dating taken men. Whether that means she cheats with them or becomes the reason they leave their partners and it’s happened often enough that people are taken notice. I’ve seen many comments of women who were in the wife position that have no sympathy for Ariana and rightfully so. We have to stop claiming misogyny on women whose behavior deserves to be called out. Plus I highly doubt this situation will really be the end of her career so why waste your time backing a home wrecker. Just keep quiet and wait until Wicked come out and enjoy her then. 🤷🏽‍♀️

In recent years some people in some fandoms have become a little overzealous when it comes to interacting with idols/celebs. Like I been saying, look at what idols in the kpop industry go through. That’s what actual obsessive stan who have parasocial relationship with these idols look like

Fans can create communities where people feel they belong, some meet and make friends at concerts, the fans have inside jokes..it can be really great thing bc it unites people.
It's just a matter of how willing people are to dismiss their idols wrong doings and how clear the boundaries between the idol and thier fans are. Some fans put cameras in gifts and follow idols home which is insane so it's really important to have that boundary. What I'm saying is both sides should know thier limits and maintain morality/respect to themselves and one another.

So you must at least be 113 years old to even have lived in a time before what you describe turned into the new normal. The thing about artists is that as soon as they reach a certain level of fame and success they become a commodity for entertainment, so the human aspect of a celebrity is lost and the become a product to be consumed. However, they maintain a human aspect and the human status but it’s a distorted perception of it. Not so much a human, but more a “humanoid’ish” figure (also tied to how perfect and curated their image becomes). I imagine is intertwined with the fear of robots taking human form but viceversa. And when these people act human in their many imperfect ways it’s shocking and difficult to comprehend. Idk at least that’s my hypothesis. At the end of the day these people deserve the privacy we all do, and I do believe that engaging so personally with people you don’t know can affect negatively on fans and celebrities. I do not find any of these people’s behaviour shocking. I believe they stopped giving a f*ck a long time ago and feel caged by how public and picked apart their lives are; to me they’re acting out, and they really don’t care anymore who they upset. It’s heartbreaking to be quite frank. It’s either that or it’s all pr. Anyway, thanks for the space to share.

I think a major part of "stan culture" and parasocial relationships that isn't talked about is the sense of unity it gives lonely people. A lot of stans (particularly teens and early 20 somethings) tend to identify with being misfits, loners, etc. These people (generally speaking) to aren't too happy with their own lives and use these celebrities/influencers as their escape. Finding fellow stans creates this sense of community that they tend to lack IRL. This is why they go so hard for these public figures. They rally each other to vote for their faves, run up their streams so they'll chart or have high RUclips views. In their minds, if their fav "wins", they win. It's a distraction from their own lives where they feel like nobodies. Stan culture makes them feel like a somebody. I actually deleted my Twitter account some years ago because I got sick of the random K-Pop videos being spammed in conversations that had nothing to do with that lol. I'll never forget when rapper Cupcakke tweeted that she wanted to kill herself and someone commented "why kill yourself when you can stan 'Twice'?!" Accompanied by a clip of one of their performances smh. I feel for these people because they let it consume them and are so out of touch with reality. The saying "go outside and touch grass" applies here. Unplug for a while, look up and live your life. Your REAL life.

I don’t think there’s one lens to look at para social relationships through it’s a very nuanced topic as many things are. I’ve read many comments under this video and almost everything said by someone I agree with half of it and disagree with half of it. Yes it’s weird to think someone you don’t know owes you anything but these people put them selves in a situation where they are publicly on display therefore the way they are viewed is obviously different than someone not in the public eye. The problem with Stan culture is loving someone so much (that you don’t actually know) and blindly supporting them no matter what they do because of the weird connection you’ve created in your head with them. Going off of my first part because these people are in the public eye these situations they get into are no longer their private business which is why I disagree with people that think we shouldn’t care when a celebrity for example dates a known racist. The type of people you keep around reflect your morals and if this information is made public I am allowed to judge that person for it. Like I said I agree with the fact that they owe us nothing so no ofc a celebrity wouldn’t be obligated to break up with the morally incorrect person they are seeing just because their fans said so but that backlash for dating sed person and people no longer liking the celebrity is valid. I personally in most occasions can’t separate the art from the artist just because I hold my morals so high I will judge someone is they are a fan of someone who surrounds themselves in any capacity with someone morally incorrect the same way I would judge a person I know personally for doing so because it shows what type of person you are.

    • @draculaissus
      @draculaissus Год назад +1

and I would like to add that these things happen irl but because these people are not in the public eye it’s easier to go unnoticed for example the way that many people will deny someone is a rapist because they’re their friend and think they know them well enough to say they wouldn’t do something like that. That’s blindly supporting someone no matter what they do it’s the same thing the difference is the entire world doesn’t know to judge them for it.

Madi even started talking about the "danger" of internalized misogyny as to why people were side-eyeing and disagreeing with Ariana, one of these female celebrities championing the idea of self-love, feminism and kindness, yet sacrificing the emotional well-being of another woman for her own. They are criticizing women who willingly go after these men on a repeated cycle as much as they are shaming guys who cheat on their partners. Both are at fault. I understand now just how little liking a majority of an artist's music has to do with me deciding to actively support them. By no means do I expect nor feel entitled to an artist going beyond making music to get me to legitimately stan them. But as it turns out, without those extras, my lifelong habits have shown that I simply download the songs for free, put them on my phone and keep it pushin'. I'm sure I'm not the only one like this. I get that it’s partially because SpongeBob HumanPants and a Twitch Streamer don’t have the same fanbase that Ariana and Doja do but I also feel like people just love to pounce at the opportunity to bring down women despite the men in these particular scandals being more deplorable. It happens in almost every dating scandal that the woman in the relationship is scrutinized but the man is just a symbol of her behaviour rather than an equal player at the least or the actual perpetrator at most. If the roles are reversed and a presumably progressive man was caught in a relationship with a questionable woman, everyone would pity the man and say he was “tricked” into it. It’s not that the women don’t deserve to be called out for their complacency but they’re afforded way less consideration that just maybe, their partly the victims in these relationships as well.

I think the biggest lie this society ever told was "celebrity must be kept accountable for their behaviour"... No. They don't. No one "has to" be held accountable for anything they do within the confines of the law. And definitely not by you, a nobody (this is a rethoric "you", I'm talking about the fans, in general). You don't get to call people out on their shitty behaviour. Do you think you are holier than thou? You don't know what the celebrity is going through emotionnally or mentally. Everybody does shitty things sometimes, especially when they are in a bad place. So try using empathy instead of judgment.
If they are normal human beings, they will often know what they are doing is wrong (and believe me, whatever you want to tell them they will probably have already told themselves several times), they don't need you to be the keeper of their morality. At the end of the day, they make their own decisions.
If they are not normal human beings and don't have moral values, then just stop associating with them, that's it. No one is forcing you to listen to Ariana's music if you don't like what she does in her personal life. Personally I think that's her business and you don't get to judge her for things that she decides for herself, especially when you don't know the context of what she's going through.
HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE FOR YOUR OWN SHIT, don't project your own morals on other ppl!
Secondly, celebrities didn't ask to be role models for kids --> it is an expectation YOU unfairly placed on them. You are parenting very wrong if you child is taking morality advice from celebs instead of from you.
And to the adults, I say this: whoever thinks "Ariana Grande did it, so that means I can do it too" is very broken inside and needs to seek therapy ASAP. The actions of others do not dictate what you can or can't do. Only you can decide that according to your own morality (unless the action is illegal, of course, in which case your Government decides that).
Finally, liking someone (or someone's art, in this case) does not mean you 100% agree with everything they have ever said or done in their life, so liking Ariana does not mean you condone every single one of her actions. Stop seeing the world in absolutes because I assure you it is everything but!
People are people, sometimes they do good things, sometimes they do bad things, one sole action is not a reflexion on their character as a whole, nor does it mean that they can never grow/evolve and/or change their mind on something they used to believe.
*hard facepalm * all this always seemed pretty obvious to me but, oh well... I hope that helps!

I mean Doja is right I don’t know her so I don’t love her so I can totally see why she would say that i like her music doesn’t mean I have to love her .. like we need to stop putting these ppl on a pedestal.. wen she called her fans stupid in a way we kinda are like why are we calling her a satinist just cuz she has tattoos that you wouldn’t get like and who she’s dating like why are we invested in it like we never seriously stop and think like why are we involved in these people business

I always thought I was weird because I always felt kind of weird thinking of celebrities or influencers in a personal or close way and I felt awkward leaving comments trying to talk to them. turns out I was the normal one. wild.

This video and comment section are so much more constructive then some of the other things I’ve seen floating around for Doja. Her situation puts me in such a weird place, because I’ve found myself identifying with a lot of her music before, but now I’m not sure how to feel. The fact that she doesn’t even seem to like her old pop albums is what gets me. I found comfort in how unique her style was and I loved what she was doing creatively at the time, but how are you supposed to feel when said artist says it was all a cash grab? A lot of this feel like self-sabotaging behavior on her end. I don’t want to support her actions, but I hate how much I was able to see myself through her music. I guess I was the fool then 😕

I think who she is today and who she was before are totally different people, doja(back then) i believe used to love her songs and the stuff she puts out, but i think something happened where she tried to move away from that image and try something new, she was blocked. Whatever she's dealing with now has an impact on how she views her old self. I dont really believe her entirely when she said it was a cash grab because i believe that she did put her genuine passion in it somewhere

As humans we should treat everyone fairly and like a normal human beings but we have to remember celebrities are a different bread their lives are way different to ours. We should never put someone on a pedestal, you can appreciate them and give them common curtsy but you still have to remember their human.

People make mistakes, I'm willing to forget and move on if they work on themselves and actually learn from those mistakes. If they don't and keep doing it... well, goodbye. The pop girls need to chill though, every week there's something new.
