I am a Bcom Grad and I have been a SQL Developer for last 10 years. I too had a similar journey like him but my total years of experience is more than 17 years. In IT industry continuous self learning, self motivation and outperforming other Tech Grad colleagues in the interview and on the job is the only way to grow up the career and be successful from BCOM grad and get paid as IT Grad.
