Love Neil deGrasse Tyson, and the "I don't know" answer was awesome.
He has a theory about history. Anytime at any point in history that someone didnt have an answer they invoke "God's will" and then later it gets solved so he makes a point of always saying "i dont know" when he doesnt know.
In fairness, it is the only correct answer.
If you don't know, then "I don't know" is the correct answer. Any other answer is just wrong. Because you don't know, so stop pretending you do.
Question: "Do you know?" Answer: "I don't know". Because you don't know, do you? Neither does anyone else.
If you're asked "do you know?" and then you say "I know it was Zeus who did it" then you're just lying there, aren't you? You don't know that.
Now, you might feel very convinced, by your own personal convictions, to think it's a plausible possibility that it might have been Zeus. Maybe.
But you don't have video footage, you don't have a witness to the beginning of the universe testifying that it was definitely Zeus, you don't have a written confession from Zeus that it was him. You have nothing. Not a single thing. On the evidence front, we're all drawing a blank here.
So you can't say you know Zeus did it. You can only say "I don't know... but I like to think it was Zeus who did it". That's fine.
I mean, the fact that you like the idea that it was Zeus doesn't have any actual bearing on whether it was - heck, I reckon it'd be really cool if it was Spiderman who did it but, like, he clearly didn't, as Spiderman is a fictitious character and "making universes" ain't amongst his super powers. But, come on, it'd be cool, right?
But wishing things were true doesn't make them real.
So, sure, everyone can have their favourites. But this has no bearing on whether it's correct. Almost certainly, of all the infinite possibilities, the odds you've randomly chosen the right one is basically zero. What you might say, beyond "I don't know" - which is the only correct response - is, statistically speaking, guaranteed to be wrong.
And we don't know, so "I don't know" is the only possible correct answer you could ever give.
Thereafter, if you want to have some fun with a speculative discussion that it'd be awesome if it were Zeus or Spiderman or whoever, then that's a separate discussion.
But on the "do you know?" question then, no, you don't. No-one does. And it's just lying to say otherwise. I don't know.
Can we address the fact that Larry King is still out here interviewing folks?!

When I was a little girl, my father taught me to look up at the sky. He pointed out stars and constellations. I still always look up when I go outdoors, day or night.

Neil. I watched all videos he appeared in at least twice. He simply introduces science to all layers of minds , which means he's mastering his knowledge .

Just because he loves being an educator doesnt mean he failed as a scientists.. You shouldnt judge others so quickly based on their interest ma boi... Being a CEO of a company doesnt mean it is superior than being a puppeteer.
As an example, i admire Jim Henson who created The Muppets and puppeteered some of the puppets in the show more than i admire Elizabeth Holmes, the CEO of Theranos, a shady failed multi-billion company who is being in charged of multiple felonies.... LMAO

Musk would agree with a lot of what Carlin said (the earth does not need saving, it will be fine... but comfortable life for humans and other species may indeed be in jeopardy thanks to human industry), but wouldn't be cynical about it like Carlin was.

And that's why agnosticism is the only rational spiritual affiliation.
It is indeed the most rational, but at the same time it's important to recognize it's not possible to be a "pure" agnostic. Agnosticism is about what it's possible to know, not about what you personally believe. You can be an agnostic atheist or an agnostic believer, but admitting to the truth that you don't know doesn't actually answer the question of what you personally believe. For example neither you nor I know if aliens exist, but it's not possible to have no opinion whatsoever, you either believe aliens are out there or you don't, admitting you can't "know" for a fact doesn't change that, and the same is true of god(s). I think it's good that Neil leaves it at "i don't know" for the sake of civility, but if he holds no active belief in any god(s) and at the same time admits he doesn't know, that is the same position as agnostic atheism.
@@InMaTeofDeath Thank you. I think it is important people know this distinction. No there is provable collaborative evidence of a creator or God. However it would still be irrational to say this is beyond the realm of possibilities. Being religious to an Agnostic Atheist is like believing in any other of the possible explanations for how we got here. We only know what we know, that is our reality. If something lies beyond our perceptions so be it.
Exactly, we should never assume that the supernatural force that started it all was a conscious being. We don’t even know for sure if it was a supernatural force. People who assert that it MUST be god aren’t thinking very logically.

Improbable events can happen - IF THEY ARE PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE. A flat planet would violate the laws of physics, particularly orbital mechanics (astrodynamics, as NASA calls it these days).

Love this interview! Also, since Walter Cronkite didn't live forever afterall, Larry King is well worthy of the unofficial title as world's most ancient still active TV-personality. Bravo, mr. King. Please follow up this interview with interviewing Elon Musk - ask him about his opinions on the potential for a space-elevator. Remember to suggest the mind-buggling prospect of royalties from using it.

RIP Larry so sad I didn't know he had died I watched his interviews once or twice but it was brilliant, I don't believe in an afterlife but I wish him the best going forward if there is one. If anyone knows how he died please comment.

Some people are too smart to run for President.
In this Country, it's supposed to be the people who have the power. And, Neil deGrasse Tyson is doing the best thing he can be doing to better this Country, by educating the population!
The better educated the population, the more inoculated we are from those who would try to BS us.
Basic, fundamental scientific literacy is the most effective way to avoid being taken advantage of, or being CONNED.
And, if the "Aces are in their places," like Neil, doing what he's good at doing, being a science educator, we wouldn't have to worry about electing the wrong people.
We'd all be smart enough to insist upon our Government representation being at LEAST a one-to-one reflection of the constituencies for which they serve.
So, the best way to have the best politicians is to be literate enough in practical common sense to insist we only elect the people who are the best people for the job.
And, that's on US.

I am a bit disappointed that Neil never had the urge or seen the need to directly criticize the former administration. It was more than obvious what he actually thought about Trump but I'm surprised he never said it out loud and clearly. I'm sure it wasn't for the lack of courage, or because of the fear of the concequences, (becoming a target of Trump's tweets). But for a man who's so clear about his views and convictions, he should have been more clearer on one of the most important social events of our times, and say it out loud. When I want to to listen to a perfect description of Trump, I periodically go to Sam Harris's podcast where he had 2 rants about Trump. One before he became POTUS and the other when he was one. It is a brilliant take down of a simple, uneducated and vindictive man. In cases like this I miss not having Christopher Hitchens with us. Now there was a guy who spoke his mind and never cared about the concequences of his sharp words.
