I worked with many stroke survivors who had various forms of aphasia (loss of ability to make or understand speech). John clearly evidences in this interview signs of aphasia, as well as very effective treatment and speech therapy, which allows him to be relatively fluent now. There are other signs of this stroke, such as his fixed affect (his facial expression hardly changes).
John shows us all tremendous courage as he shares his very difficult, scarey, and emotionally painful experience with his stroke, his depression, and his recovery process. His sharing and helping to spread awareness of mental health and the importance of getting treatment, is very honorable! Thank you, John!

I recently retired from a career in rehabilitation for both adults and children recovering from TBI. Ignorance and generalizations often leads to difficulties with families and public life which can be far more harmful than the brain injury itself. John and his family were able to both find and understand his new disabilities making his rehab and personal life realistic with goals and hopes. Acceptance of the problems makes up around 90% of rehab and a "normal" family life again.

That’s an interesting and kind-meaning comment, but it’s wrong. If you watch his ted talks about Braddock and other commentary you would know that his facial expressions haven’t changed and some people, including myself just don’t show a ton of emotion as often. Call us dry-humor-preferred, or sardonic, but some people are like that. If you’d been the mayor of Braddock, PA then you’d be more likely to understand. Rather than stereotyping everyone who lacks high enough emotional response to having experienced a stroke. Especially since his stroke was NOT in the area that would effect his face. You’re a know-it-all-know-nothing.” On the bright side, people like him and me have fewer laugh lines and wrinkles and look 10 years younger.

    • @jimbell242

@@causarumcognitio Good reply, …until your insults. A fixed affect is often a sign of pathology, including for example psychosis, TBI, and stroke. It is very difficult to fake, especially during an entire interview. In many such victims, stress aggravates their symptoms, including fixed affect and language processing, so it may not be present all the time. John's language difficulties are subtle in the interview. I do not know the specific areas of John's brain where he had his stroke; however, I do know that brain damage, such as from a stroke, does not have to happen in Wernicke's or Broca's areas for language and speech processing to be affected. I am not a "know it all", as you accused me. My PhD taught me that. However, I do know what I am talking about. If you had worked with as many brain injured patients as I have, you would know my assessment is accurate. Thanks for your reply.

Man... I can identify with what you are experiencing! I have been in a depressive state for years... and have been pushing through it. Sadness persists from the time I wake up in the morning until the time I go to bed. All I want to do most days is stay in bed. That being said, each day I go to work, practice guitar, go out with friends, and lead a normal life. I suppose one could say I am a high-functioning depressive with anhedonia tendencies. That being said, so long as I progress (according to my goals), I am able to function amazingly well. I've come to the conclusion that no one needs to know of my sadness, due to the fact that I am a teacher and role model for others. I teach music and consider it my job on earth to bring happiness to others. It's not that I am afraid to get help... it's just that giving other people hope is my business. I gain strength through showing others love and care. If I concentrate on my own needs and wants, I forego concentrating on helping others. Perhaps when my job is done on this earth, I can sit back in my rocking chair and concentrate on feeling sad... but for now I will not indulge in that luxury!

As a stroke victim, I can relate to what John went through. I was working 3 months after a major stroke and I was also severely depressed the Fetterman was. In my situation, I was in denial and I wanted to pretend that my stroke didn't even happen. It's extremely difficult to accept the cognitive deficits that you have after a stroke and I wanted to just pretend that everything was fine even though it was far from being fine. I blame the people around him for not giving him the proper time to recover. The people around me didn't give me the proper time to recover either because they couldn't stand to see me in bed depressed all day. They wanted me out of the house. I'm not even going to go into what happened to me after going back to work, but let's just say that my depression only got worse and it led me down a dark path. As of now, I can't say that I'm fully recovered. I'm sure that I would be fully recovered by now if my situation was handled properly. I blame his family and the people around him who obviously just wanted to see him get elected. It's pretty obvious that he wasn't in the proper mental state to make wise decisions about his physical and mental health at that time.

And when I say his family I'm not talking about his children. Children obviously aren't able to understand what he was going through at that time. The adults in his family should have been able to understand it though.

@afanasibushmanov7463 That was so eloquent! I agree with you wholeheartedly. It seems his family and all the consultants around him weren't taking his best interest at heart. There is more to life than politics. I'm glad he's doing better. He seems much better to me. Thank you for telling your story. I'm sorry the people in your life pushed you before you were ready. Sometimes, you have to be your own champion. You seem very strong.

Thank you for this. I have seen him previously as a political force or meme, depending... But this interview reminds me he's a man. A father, a human. So many stroke victims especially experience depression like his, and men don't get to talk about it. They have to shoulder the burden. But not alone, not anymore. Let's turn "should get help" of "help helps" to "could get help". Glad he got help. Praying for him and his family's continued health and well being.
This is brave, respectable, and honorable of him. I appreciate his paying this forward. I hope he gets to meet Kevin Costner if he hasn't already.

He's dressed the way he is because it is comfortable. Maybe it is time to start judging a man by the content of his character, not the cut of his jeans.
