  • In an interview days before his release from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the Pennsylvania Senator talked with "Sunday Morning" anchor Jane Pauley about his "downward spiral" that led to a diagnosis of major depression. He also talks about sharing news of his difficulties publicly, how his health scare affected his family, and his reasons for feeling hopeful for the future.

As someone who has battled major depression, anxiety, and PTSD for more than thirty years I'm so happy that he's doing better, even though it's not like it was in the past when it was something to be hidden, there are still people who because they don't/can't understand what your going through or why you can't just snap out of it, want to make it out like you're just being lazy or some other BS. Even though I'm sure he wishes that he never went through this I hope he knows how much it means to people like me who have and continue to battle this terrible illness in silence for so long.

I'm thrilled to see he's feeling better. I've suffered from bipolar disorder for more than forty years, and it's hard, really hard to function on a day-to-day basis. Depression isn't so much sadness, although it's surely that, but a loss of vitality and interest in life. It can utterly be incapacitating. It's a horribly isolating illness and I hope his story will help others realize they aren't alone and convince them to seek the treatment they need.

I saw him at PA Governor Josh Shapiro's innauguration. He did not look well at all--He was so gaunt, skinny, and very sad look on his face. The fact that he didn't stick around at all for any of the celebrations afterward told me he was really struggling.
I met him once a decade ago for a architecture/urban planning conference and he was just the coolest small town mayor I ever met. He was excited about the community garden and a bunch of other projects, you could feel the sincerity and passion.
So glad he recognized the fact that he needed help. The world needs more people/leaders like him.

I have bipolar disorder and I found this to be very moving and it made me cry. I’m inspired by John Fetterman’s decision to seek support. I think it’s a sign of great courage for someone to let go of a sense of control. It breaks my heart for him to feel bad about going into the hospital on his son’s birthday. I hope he knows that it’s ok and good that he got the support he needed. And that that will make him a better father and a good model for his own sons. That your own well-being is paramount. And this video is helping remind me to do what will make me happiest and to ditch all sorts of pressure I feel to do all sorts of things.

He's a strong person and just a fact that he wanted to get help, goes to show, that he has desire to live and make improvements. People should follow his footsteps. Anybody can suffer from depression, and major depression, even mental health professionals. Major props to you for your forthrightness and honesty about your life, and challenges -- we all have them, they are a part of life, and in that regard you are no different. I'm so glad that you sought and received the support that you needed to come back from depression, and I hope you remain in remission. Keeping you and your family in my prayers, bro. 🤜🤛

@@chrisgill1302 yup, I worked on two neurology floors in a large urban hospital as a medical social worker. Strokes are often debilitating and like the story indicated, 1 in 3 stroke patients will suffer from depression.

@@deanmay338 While I agree that those that suffer from a stroke (and many other acute & devastating diseases) can develop depression as a result, it is important to note that the most obvious symptoms Fetterman is exhibiting are NOT related to depression, but rather due to brain damage as a result from having a major stroke.
While it is important that we do not stigmatize any medical condition, it is equally important to recognize that medical conditions can affect a person's cognitive abilities and may require major lifestyle adjustments.
To put this in more relatable terms, If Fetterman were a pilot, would you feel safe getting on his aircraft as a passenger?
      There is ONE honest answer.
...I think one can extrapolate where this line of thought ends.

@@chrisgill1302 I hear ya. My response to the video was about his human struggles with depression, a stroke, and the subsequent depression aggravated by the stroke. My thoughts were about his struggles as human being with depression, a stroke, and the impact on his family. I wasn’t really focused on him being a senator, a pilot, a carpenter, or his occupation at all. He had a stroke several months ago and was just recently treated for major depression. I have no idea what this means for his political future. I am sure that his future will be contemplated by himself, his family, his medical providers along with the media and the public. Wishing him a full recovery along with personal/family happiness.
