    Keep it coming Dan. Love these videos, easy to understand. But as you say, a lot of people get caught up in ‘the screens’. I got called to a car that would crank but not start. The customer had been told the car had an immobiliser fault, semi diagnosed by a garage with their scan tool. It had to go to the dealer to be fixed they told me. I had a quick look, it did not have any symptoms of an immobiliser problem. But it had historical can bus fault codes that the garage instantly thought was part of a bigger problem, even though they weren’t present faults. So they walked away from it. When I checked I noticed on cranking the fuel rail pressure was too low. In the end the car had an air leak at the fuel temperature sensor pipe work, so the fuel was draining back to the tank (it had no additional lift pump or primer) found all this within 10 minutes. This is not to say I am a magician, the customer was amazed and happy it didn’t cost him a lot of money at the dealer, but it is more common these days for shops to overlook the simple things straight away, and think there is some deeper electrical problem, than it is to start with the simple things. This is why I like watching your videos. Thanks

    Good find ! Sad that some shops can't do their work without collateral damages. That kind of stuff always happens as flat rate mechanics try to make their living on rushing jobs through their shops. No respect for the car, just get what they need to fix the car done and forget the fact they need to have good manners when disassembly and reassembly to prevent unnecessary damage resulting from not being focused on the work getting done without messing up other items along the way.

    Excellent advice. I am a software engineer and work with all sorts of people in the technology sector... my laptop ended up in service with a battery drain issue. They sent it back because the automated test suite did not report any faults... after having calmed down I tried to suggest in further communication that maybe their test suite is not covering this scenario.... I can tell they did not consider this scenario... all they should have done is measure on the power draw from the battery and realize that the charging circuitry had a slight short to ground...
    In your case there really isn't going to be a fault code for this issue and I find this techno-fetishism epidemic concerning that a vast pool of garages would not be able to diagnose a car without the scan tool tipping them off about it... they basically blindly trust the machine and alternatively blame the customer.... :)

    • @Diagnosedan

      As an engineer I can confirm that fixing things require almost as much intelligence and ingenuity and a far more adaptable skillset than that of designing stuff from the ground up... unfortunately in the electronics industry these guys at the DELL support centre are the lowest paid borderline slave labour who have completed a short training and have generally neither the skillset nor the investigative attitude one would require for a successful repair... then the garages in London.... well let's just say there is one thing they definitely figured out how to operate... and that is the cashier's machine... it took years by the time I found a quality garage I can trust with my car.

    • @piratecustom6029
      @piratecustom6029 5 лет назад +1

      @@kozmaz87 Warranty repairs done on laptops (or computers in general) is limited to parts exchange. The workshop-technicians does not have access (or knowledge) how and where to meassure "abnormal powerdrain". The only thing they can do is to run certain "software testprograms suppiled by the manufacturer", when these show no faults then its up to the technician either "suspect a faulty item" or to ask for a second opininon if someone else has encountered this issue before, the answer is usually NO, even if you call the manufacturers 2nd or even 3rd line support (been there, done that, the usual answer is "never heard of that"). In your case I would have verified that the drain issue is present, that is charge 100%, shut down and leave it around for a few days and see if the battery drainage is "normal or not". If not normal then tried with the easiest first, a known good battery. If still not good, then its probably a mainboard issue. The problem is that there is often a turnaround time involved in repairs, a longer turnaround time (or rather time between claim created and claim closed) is exceeding a specified time-frame then the workshop will reecive some kind of "penalty". So to keep up good records it is often considered better to have a short turn around time in cases like these, hence you will have the send in your laptop for a second repair. I hope and do belive that when you called their first line support you were told to make a clean install as the first step, if this did not help I suspect they sent you a new battery (not all batteries are customer replacable sadly). If still a non fix then the workshop should have replaced your mainboard (most likely) at once, IF they have been informed the steps that had allready been performed (reinstall + new battery). Somtimes there are real strange faults, I have myself encountered a "no picture scenario". Replaced the mainboard, no succes. When the (new) mainboard was removed and placed freely on the desk the laptop worked and so did the old one, once installed both were dead. Replaced the chassie, but still the same issue, as soon as the mainboars were tightened down the laptop went dead. So there I was with more or less a brand new laptop where the fault was "Dead when installed in the chassie". So instead of carrying on with the repair and exchange even more parts that will ruin my workshops performance rating, we opted for a filing for a replacement laptop from the manufacturer. There were several reasons for this, first being the time spent and that two parts had allready (incorretly!) been exchanged. The second was that we did not want to recieve even more penalties. Sometimes the right thing do is to "call it a day".

    I used to do work for the local Mitsubishi dealer. They dropped off a brand new Magna Wagon , it had all sorts of problems, gear selection , warning lights flashing on and off.The dealer put the factory scanner on and it was giving all sorts of codes. The dealer gave up and sent it to my workshop. Armed with the factory service manual complete with wiring diagram I started searching. It took a couple of days to find , but during the manufacture of the wiring harness two wires had been incorrectly placed in one of the main harness plugs. Just swapped the two wires ....all fixed.
