    I was a white water rafting guide AND I grew up in Niagara. That water pushing back up is some strong undertow action as well as the layer of large rapid on top. These waters have pulled people down and made them disappear WHILE wearing a life jacket. Not a place to play in the water like this.

    • @wesdizz6297

      I didn't witness this, but my parents told me their crazy friend went in these waters with a 13ft Zodiac and got caught in a whirlpool which was actually sucking the Zodiac in enough to the point that it was filling with water. He eventually got out, but they said it was terrifying to see. It takes a lot to put a zodiac in trouble, so I couldn't imagine if one of these guys ended up in a whirlpool.

    I live on this river and I'm a swift water rescuer if you are going to play around in those rapids you have to get proper PFDs!!!! Those 10-15 pound buoyancy jet skiing vests are not good enough! You need the white water rated PFDs and some throw bags!!

    Looks like a great run. Wish I lived closer.
    Only 3 things I noted that concern me as a Swiftwater Rescue Professional:
    1) Moving water in rivers is aerated & therefore can be less buoyant. Current best practice is to wear a “high-float” PFD (Class III/V) rather than generic ones you use on the lake/ocean. Trust me if your ever in the whitewater, getting beat through waves, exhausted, it can save your life.
    2) Partner rescue using a PWC in moving water is definitely something you wanna get some training on. Then practice, practice, practice every opportunity. So that you can complete a recovery quickly.
    3) There are some rigging that can be done to your PWC to assist in towing a ski in rough moving water & keep seats from blowing off if flipped over in rough water.
    If anyone wishes to discuss specific river running practices. Happy to chat. PM me.

      Is there any way you can safely swim through the rapids?

    • @user-km1tu9yl3q
      @user-km1tu9yl3q Год назад

      That means all water is aerated as all water is always moving.

    • @rivermedic131
      @rivermedic131 Год назад +1

      @@user-km1tu9yl3q Not exactly. Not ALL water. Water moving over an obstacle that causes turbulence with sufficient force can mix with air (think fast moving water impacting a rock or developing enough height to cause it to collapse at its top). Therefore becoming aerated & becomes less buoyancy per pound of flotation that your PFD is rated for. It’s why we use “high-flotation” PFD’s in whitewater rescue & not water-ski or PFD’s with generic floatation. Without it you can find yourself expending a lot of energy trying to keep your face out of the water so you can breath while you attempt to self-rescue or get rescued.

    • @rivermedic131
      @rivermedic131 Год назад +1

      @@robbessell5704 Sure. Get some training, Gain some experience in a “controlled” setting. Become comfortable. Basically, I teach that you shouldn’t be in any water or rapid your not willing to swim through & be prepared for the “worst-case” scenario.

    Went to local University, survived the mighty Niagara twice floating on large truck inner tubes. Entered the river at dusk just past Whirlpool Park taking on the heart of rapids all the way to Lewiston/Youngstown (past Robert Moses Power Plant). A daunting experience to say the very least, but an adrenaline rush for the fearless. Going down you feel like your sitting in surf with waves crashing on you without motion until you look to the rivers edge and see how fast you are actually going. On my second run, I flipped off the inner tube while hanging on and got sucked under the rapids (with inner tube) for over a minute and a half. Thought it was lights out, but I was a conditioned athlete with the lungs of a sturgeon. The river is reported to be as deep as the gorge is high. The depth and speed creates pockets of under tows/whirlpools which can take you down wherever and whenever the river Gods decide. Without a thought I challenged it smack down the center of the rapids with the confidence of an invincible human being. We were fine tuned D1 swimmer(s) without fear and full of confidence. A few teammates and I survived to live another day and a special year, enjoying an undefeated season in the ECAC North Atlantic. The Gorge Rapids are world class VI rapids, not to messed with and must be respected as a force of nature not to be reckoned with. Blessed to have made it and able to share the experience. After the second run, I vowed to honor the River Gods and never attempt it again. The mightly Niagara River has my love, blessings and respect.

    My car had broke down there a few years ago and all I was short for the mechanic was $98 some local guys were laughing and told me "If you can swim across the River with no life jacket we'll give you a $100 bill....Well, I knew that I could get my car fixed with that $100 so I told them make it a $120 (So I could pay the mechanic the $98 and have some left over for a good dinner) and they agreed. I jumped in right about here where these guys are filming and the water was ice cold and the current was just to strong. I figured i wouldn't make it but I kept swimming with the current while swimming for my life. I was sucked under with horrible currents several times, I got a huge gash on my leg from a tree branch or something under the water but I never let up. About 25 minutes later I reached the other side. I was exhausted and battered but alive. That was the craziest thing I've ever done in my life and I have no idea why I even did it, desperate I guess. Those guys ended up giving me $500. True story and by the grace of God I lived to tell about it. Stay away from this River and stay alive.

      During the high season, the “tourist flow” over the falls of 100,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) converts to 2,832 cubic metres per second (cms), meaning 2,832 tonnes of water per second is flowing over the falls.
      The “non-tourist flow” of 50,000 cfs converts to 1,416 cms, which means that 1,416 tonnes of water per second is flowing over the falls.

    If you havent seen how strong that current is up close, go do it. It is insane the closer you get. Id never ride a ski in there. I think there are catch ropes that go across but cant remember. Either way. Ballsy

    • @TorontoPWC
      @TorontoPWC  6 лет назад +2

      Tell that to the people commenting about the smart idea's to tie a rope from the PWC to your ankle ! Or the guys thinking that you can go downstream instead of against the current to rescue without your boat capsizing.
