  • Government authorities conducted a raid at a factory in Pretoria following a tip off from an employee. Workers got an opportunity to engage with the inspectors of the department of labour. Ziniko Mhlaba reports.

      @dinrshanpillay3467 politically, I got no issues with Chinese... these are individuals and personal responsibility counts. I just found culturally, more times than not, local Chinese generally tend to be racist and purely money driven. This doesn't apply to all tho.

      Why not. These people were given business/ investors visas to come to South Africa for job creation for unemployed South Africans.. If they not providing jobs to South Africans and they breaking labour laws they need to be arrested and prosecuted. South Africans do not benefit from such companies, only these businesses and illegal immigrants benefits. Sorry SA being a haven for illegal working is coming to an end. they need to go open their factories in the countries there employees come from.

    As a Risk Management Specialist...I see plenty of room for improvement!! But, people are being employed and it appears that they are being well taken care of. I have come across such cases where reports are made to DOL by a disgruntled employee...

      This happens all over the world. Inspectors need to just do their jobs, that is what they paid for. You receive a tip off you act. Its like environmental health they supposed to go out and do random checks, but this lot have been siting around and earning money for nothing.

      They bring in investment and create jobs, yet you still complain. Did you have the capacity to go and run factories in China, do you have the capacity to open this factory in the country? If you did, this factory wouldn't be there.       Foreign is investment is required in any country. They are assessed and awarded permits to operate in the country, so that they can employ locals and also pay Tax.

      The problem is you dont understand economics, you cant run a factory with a spaza shop license. You need capital investment and licenses are issued based on how big your business plan is, if you want to build a big factory and create employment the government doesnt hesitate to process your papers faster so you can start your business.       No South African will any problem with businesses being inspected, BECAUSE WE KNOW OF ALL THE ILLEGAL WORKING GOING IN SOUTH AFRICA.. No business will consider this harassment if they above board, because any business understands the Labour department is entitled to do inspections unannounced. . FOREIGNERS OF COURSE WILL HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THIS TYPE OF ACTION.

The inspectors must go to different companies in twos and do surveillance and report to their controllers, this is just a show for tv to pretend like they are working. Those uniforms they are wearing are new from the box. They have never been worn.
