As a newer photographer I love videos like this that share "thought process". As you say, camera settings and rules are essential to learn, but that is only the foundation of starting to create better images. It's this more advanced thinking that leads to better images. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you to James Popsy for introducing you! As a newbie, I am overwhelmed by how much there is to take in and learn. I have watched and read a lot of stuff to try and make sense of it all, to be honest I’m am still struggling. I thought it had a lot to do with my camera being my iPhone. Then I discovered you, and now it is starting to make sense. I have watched about five of your video and in everyone I have had a light bulb moment! You explain everything so clearly and in layman terms that even I can understand and make sense of. I love how you use your own work showing both sides of what you are explaining. Keep up the great work, you are doing an excellent job! 😊
I agree!! put it in my playlist for re-watching other times. Also well put together video you kept my attention for the whole 23 minutes you where explaining things.
What an absolutely brilliant video. It really has helped me look at some areas of composition in a different way. My next little challenge will be to test myself and get a shot using the different elements you have used…… thanks
I've watch many videos on composition, but this the first I've seen that actually explains WHY it is important. For me, knowing why I'm doing something makes it a lot easier to understand how to apply the knowledge. Thanks for going the extra mile on this subject.
This is definitely the most well articulated and hands-on tutorial on composition that I have come across in quite a while. Not only do you cover a lot of ground but you also provide excellent positive and negative examples illustrating your points. I think we can learn from composition mistakes even more than from good examples. And the fact that you showed how things can go wrong was very helpful.
Absolutely one of the best videos regarding composition I’ve ever seen it’s something I struggle with and you’re clear explanations and examples were exceptional. Thank you very much.
Love your videos. You tell it like it is. No hype or BS. Your message is (to me anyway) is”Look. If you want to do this, you need to get your butt out there and do it…a lot.” But you also emphasize having fun with photography by all means, but you’ll have even more fun as you learn more and more. Thanks.
Amazing video, so informative. Haven't found anyone who would explain composition and showed examples like this. Especially enjoyed the cropping parts to demonstrate where our eyes go, that brought it home! Thank you!
Excellent video. In addition to the key elements you describe, you have also provided instructive examples to make your points. You have very effectively taught me some additional aspects to consider.
Extremely useful information on improving composition, the examples and explanations were particularly helpful. Your cropping examples clarified the points you were making for me. I can see that this will take some careful thought and planning, but it is clearly worth it if it results in more impactful and interesting compositions. Thanks so much for putting this video together, it is definitely one of the more useful I've seen. I would love to see more videos along this line.
Balance, yes. I like it. Thank you for putting together a well thought out explanation of your ideas. Being able to articulate your craft is a mark of a professional. Really helpful. 👍
This made me realize that most guides to composition don't take color in consideration! I love the way you explain your examples and especially when something doesn't work. Thank you! I'll probably re-watch this one in the future.
I am a food photographer and your framework of the attention hierarchy is so useful in food photography as well. It adds a different dimension of understanding on top of the basic composition principles like the rule of 3rds, the golden triangle, etc. I am going to continue to draw parallels between street photog. and food.
That was more interesting than any of the Landscape rule of thirds rubbish. First off it's a tool of composition, not a rule as there are many composition tools. A few such as crop for drama, looking for value masses, you can squint so they become clearer for your planned composition, design visions with Rhythm, avoid attracting attention to the edges., creating depth with overlap, keeping the shapes in your composition interesting. You have many shapes to compose with beside thirds, lead-in lines we know about but they can be S, L, 7, Triangulation points, Diagonals, Circles. We need to remember Art has been around a bloody long time, photography is an infant. Check out the Art galleries. Thanks for posting Roman, judging by the comments it's like you've woken people up to other possibilities. Bravo.
Yeah, they are just observations through time, but bearing names such as rule, law, etc. that some people had tried to pass them off as short cuts to success in composition. Not to mention that the original ROT did not include the intersections, hence this current ROT has been just an urban legend (originated from the early DSLR forums day) that combined features from the golden ratio. Talk about the blind leading the blind. Although having some solid grounds (fundamentals) to stand on when they started out do allow some a jump start, trendy and be able to carry on shop talk with others. Hopefully, sooner than later to stop what Fan Ho had said, "...just placing subjects in gold spots and hoping for an image to work".
Brilliant. Thank you for showing your pictures and showing us how to make mistakes. I learned a lot from seeing a bad picture or a photo made worse by poor composition. Very very informative.
Thank you! I have watched so many videos about photography and most are just repeated basic information that i could literally find anywhere on the internet. I found your video about light and it was like an eye-opening experience to me after i watched it. Thank you again for all these awesome information.
Thank you Roman for this video. Although I've been photographing for years and inherently know many of things you've discussed, it's always good to hear other people's perspectives as it really helps clarify my own understanding / misconceptions. All this to say, great work on this. 👏
Thank you for the video Roman. I found it very useful in the way you explained and demonstrated each of the aspects. I'll certainly be watching it again and, looking out for others videos from you. Many thanks. Neil M
The concept of weight is interesting. Within the concept of balance. Apart from that, I do like the shot through the window and the shot with peoples' silhouettes as a frame. Very nice stuff.
Very well developed methodology on composition. I have heard of many of the techniques, but never explained in such a concise way. It is easy to visualize, therefore easy to remember. Thank you.
I have just subscribed to your site. Your photographs are wonderful and I can see clearly what you are talking about. I have seen all these elements of composition before but not your teaching about weight and emphasis. And balance. I look forward to seeing more of your videos.
This was really well articulated and thought provoking. I've been using the terms balance and weight myself when looking at compositions, but had never broken it down to which elements should be assigned more or less weight. The tower bridge shot is a fantastic example of how easy it is to make the image uninteresting by not giving the viewer clear areas of focus.
What an amazing channel you have. For begginers like me your videos are complete master classes. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Roman. Awesome explanations rare to find.
Thank you for this deep analysis. To start with it will be hard to put this into practice but with time and persistence I can see this way of thinking becoming a second nature when doing a composition. Thank you I really enjoyed listening to this video.
Being someone who has always struggled with composition beyond the basic rule of thirds i found this video extremely useful. Loving your videos keep up the good work.
Interesting way of putting things! Many of your points are probably responsible for why I'm not always happy with some of the wider angle images I take. Good content!
Brillant video! Elements and thier interaction in creating a balanced photo make so much sense. Can't wait to begin to conciously take and edit excellent photos!
You're a genius. Very thoughtful video - it's long but every second is valuable, direct and to the point - therefore totally worth watching. I like your style, and more importantly, I like your pics to backup your points. Great job, please keep these information photography skills type videos coming! Thank you!!
In five years we are going to laugh at all these youtube presenters using this lighting set up. I am already sick of it. So formulaic. Who actually works in the dark like this? This isnt a dramatic movie.
Awesome stuff! One of the few photography videos I actually learned something 'new' from. Hoping for more Fujifilm heavy content like Film Recipes or something the like. Keep it up bro!
Thank you for your very detailed and easy to understand explanation! It has helped me tremendously in figuring out how think about how I can go about composing photos.
Thank You so so much for sharing. It is very helpful. I just enrolled myself onto photography course to becone more skilled in taking "perfect" images. ☺️
Fantastic, so much value in one video. When it comes to negative space, how do you achieve such a nice contrast between lights and darks? Do you adjust the exposure compensation in camera or do it in post? I frequently struggle to achieve such a nice contrast like you've shown. Thanks again for the video! 🤍
Love it. saved to re-watch and I even took notes :). This also leads me to want to dive a bit deeper into Graphic design as it's similar and then use it in photography and analyze my photos that way.
Ok Roman, these tips are so helpful. I am happy you made this video because I couldn't find any other clip so far in which I learned more than the classic photography rules. Especially the color balance is something I will be looking for from now on in my compositions. Thank you so much.
First and most important: Thanks for that great video. I find your approach way more intuitive, free and less "mechanic" than following a set of rules. But I hope I may ask an understanding question with the cut at 10:40. The orange area on the left is bright, has strong color and is nearly as big as the shadow area. Shouldn't this side grab my attention rather than the shadows?
Nice one Roman , I enjoyed this video, it gave me some food for thought. I am even going to go back and check out some of my older photos to see if I got it right by accident, or not.
Great content with practical advice on composing photos. Also great photos of an an area I’ve worked in for 20 years and never appreciated. Subscribed.
Clearly a framework you've put an awful lot of thought into, impressively comprehensive & well articulated
Appreciate it, cheers!

Really useful content, Roman. This is worth watching a few times to drill the principles into my head. Well done!

Not even half way through this video and it's already the best video I've ever seen on composition. Very well thought out and put together 👏
Legit one of the most clear, simple and overall best way I've seen someone explain composition in photography. Congrats mate, cheers
I felt like being in a classroom being taught the ins and outs of photography. Thanks for sharing such wealth of knowledge!
What an absolutely brilliant video. It really has helped me look at some areas of composition in a different way. My next little challenge will be to test myself and get a shot using the different elements you have used…… thanks
Great video man. You’ve become my go-to for Fuji tutorials and street photography, courtesy of the YT algorithm. Looking forward to the next one.
Same here haha. Even got an X-T30 as my second camera
Fantastic way to explain something that is overly explained on the internet, but actually adding great information and not saying the same things over
I've watch many videos on composition, but this the first I've seen that actually explains WHY it is important. For me, knowing why I'm doing something makes it a lot easier to understand how to apply the knowledge. Thanks for going the extra mile on this subject.
One of the best explanations of good composing, I have ever seen. Thank you. Excellent Job!

You have a good eye - and a very good understanding of what makes photos look good. I appreciate you sharing your talent - TY.
Brilliant. As a new photographer this is super easy to understand and implement right away. Thank you!!! 🙏
Thank you for the video Roman. I found it very useful in the way you explained and demonstrated each of the aspects.
I'll certainly be watching it again and, looking out for others videos from you. Many thanks.
Neil M
Love how you go through explaining all the examples. It's so interesting!
Superb video! Thanks for sharing, I will be watching this several times.
One of the most helpful videos I've watched lately. Thank you so much Roman.
Love it!!! Right at the beginning of the video I pull out the lightroom and re-compose tons of my images.
This video is composition in photography on the next level!
thanks Roman!! You really help me with my photography journey and discover what "I" personally am looking for.
Such a valuable video. I'm a huge fan of your style and I'm slowly trying to find my own using all your tips. I appreciate all these videos man
Well explained, got me thinking about this more actively. Inspiration for next photo walk 👍
This is crazy, I have bene following some of this but I didn't actively know what I was doing until I watched this video!!! You are great!
The concept of weight is interesting. Within the concept of balance. Apart from that, I do like the shot through the window and the shot with peoples' silhouettes as a frame. Very nice stuff.
Your photographs are not only well suited to demonstrate your points but are just great photographs in and of themselves.
Thank you so much for the video.
for sure the best video about composition i have seen so far. keep up with the great work!
Yes, you have described very useful and interesting things of photo composition.thanks you very much.
Very well developed methodology on composition. I have heard of many of the techniques, but never explained in such a concise way. It is easy to visualize, therefore easy to remember. Thank you.
I kept getting distracted by looking at all the amazing pics you shared, beautiful work!
That video makes sense and helps us to compose better.
Thank you for your huge work, your reflection on the composition is incredible, continue!
So interesting and clear !! Thanks for that precious gift Romane
I have just subscribed to your site. Your photographs are wonderful and I can see clearly what you are talking about. I have seen all these elements of composition before but not your teaching about weight and emphasis. And balance. I look forward to seeing more of your videos.
Roman this is a great resource. Like you say, i am not aware of many/any other videos covering composition in street photography in this depth.
Hi from Paris. Very very interesting and detailed explanations. Thank you so much.
I've been looking for videos like this for years! Thank you so much!
Very interesting to hear what you have to say about photography. Also the examples help to understand. Thank you.
Most useful articulation of composition I have come across. Thank you.
Thank you I really enjoyed listening to this video.
this is very useful. I like the analogy of wearing a Hawiian shirt and pairing it with plainer trousers.
@17:48 Roman, to me, the subject in that image is clearly the tiny car on the road. I think that, viewed from that angle, the image works really well.
Being someone who has always struggled with composition beyond the basic rule of thirds i found this video extremely useful. Loving your videos keep up the good work.
Extremely useful and detailed ideas putforth about different elements of composition. Well done and thanks !!
Interesting way of putting things! Many of your points are probably responsible for why I'm not always happy with some of the wider angle images I take. Good content!
Awesome!! Thank you very much for you're kind!! It's a very different point of view thought and a very good one!!
I Think this is the best tutorial so far in this genre. Keep on with this. :)
Roman, thanks for this great video. I really learnt a lot and will try to use your info on my photo's. I will watch this video many more times!
what an amazing job explaining something that is so abstract!
VERY interesting Master Class ! To watch again and again.
Thank you.
You saved me from many hours of studying composition! Thanks a lot!
I thought your video was absolutely spot on, lots of things to soak up, well done.....many thanks
Well done Roman, this a must see for those who want to take their photographs to the next level. Keep up the outstanding work.

Enjoyed this...well explained and yes I haven't seen a video explaining composition in more detail than this. Thanks
Great video. Especially the first part about the elements was very helpful!
Let’s take a second to appreciate the lighting in the room 👏
In five years we are going to laugh at all these youtube presenters using this lighting set up. I am already sick of it. So formulaic. Who actually works in the dark like this? This isnt a dramatic movie.
This was a refreshing look at composition! Thank you for sharing!
This is amazing content! Thank you so much for sharing those insights ❤! You should definitely do more videos like this! Love it!
Awesome stuff! One of the few photography videos I actually learned something 'new' from. Hoping for more Fujifilm heavy content like Film Recipes or something the like. Keep it up bro!
Excellent review. Made me think more deeply. Probably need to see it a number of times.
I am trying to start this RUclips channel and troubleshooting with composition but this video is great help for me

Your videos are so impressive and helpful. Thanks man!
Very helpful. Thought you explained and illustrated the concept of balance and negative space very well.
Ok Roman, these tips are so helpful. I am happy you made this video because I couldn't find any other clip so far in which I learned more than the classic photography rules.
Especially the color balance is something I will be looking for from now on in my compositions. Thank you so much.
Thank you!! I started a new photo education private play list and this video is the first. New subscriber.
There are very few videos, I hit the Save button for… this is one of them. Great lessons. Thanks.

Great work there.. Thanks for explaining.. Now I can take composition to another level.
This is the video I was looning for for so long
Only just caught this excellent video, very thought provoking and helpful process well explained!
Nice one Roman , I enjoyed this video, it gave me some food for thought. I am even going to go back and check out some of my older photos to see if I got it right by accident, or not.
