- Long Beach's own Vince Staples returns with his fifth album, Ramona Park Broke My Heart. Originally labeled a gangsta rapper, Vince has since displayed multiple levels of honesty, vulnerability and diversity. His music may reflect where he comes from, but he always makes a point to keep the listeners guessing about where he's going. His new album seems him tackling new areas of introspection not quite touched on his other albums. But is his ability to write good music still there? How does this hold up to his previous albums? And is there a reason to worry about where he may be taking his music? Listen to the fellas discuss it and then leave your thoughts in the comment section!

DEHH challenging Fantano with their review speed nowadays
they prolly have more time to do them compared to before
@@jesusalejandrocruztlatelpa5353 And less genres to cover than Fantano, in fairness to him
@@jesusalejandrocruztlatelpa5353 they also grinding out so much more content with the Odd Fridays, weekly livestreams, and more Patreon things outside of classic reviews. 💪🔥
Who?
@@MoeCamera grow up
Ken going from phone to iPad as he explains the album growing on him is fucking stupid 💀💀💀💀 I love this damn channel
Ken's iPad is iconic at this point
That was so funny lmao
The Prophet Kinge and his Tablet of Commandments
They better make some merch of Ken and his Ipad lmao
boomer energy
I'm an LA/Long Beach girl and a big Vince fan. He's spoken in interviews how he got into some heat in Long Beach and his mom sent him to Atlanta to get him back on track.
When Sparks Fly is probably my favorite Vince song ever. From the best to the subject matter it's such a beautiful song.
One of the most well written songs I’ve heard in a long time
Gun violence 💕💕
that chorus be hitting too man. would also probably say it’s my favorite vince song ever, maybe behind Summertime
@@qthe6thman what are you doing to help the issue?
I was worried about the quality of this project given how quickly he dropped it after his last. But goddamn, this album slays.
The "grew up around shells" line Myke came up with is similar to a Ka line lol: "didn't dwell by the sea shore, but was sure to see shells"
I always loved that about the intro to Blank Face by Schoolboy Q. one of the opening lines were "Granny swept shells on the driveway" that painted the picture right at the beginning 😂
One of the more recent ones is Cole “so many shells left on the ground, it make the easter bunny proud”. Not a sea shell ref but same theme lol.
Fa sho. Myke's line reminded me of something I'd heard recently... couldn't place it but it's definitely Ka.
Edit: _Great_ profile pic, btw! Huge Welles fan, here... _F For Fake_ is absolutely incredible. The final masterpiece he completed in his life.
You've got good taste.
vince lived in ATL for like 8 months in his teens. shit popped off at home and his mom had him go out there
The hook on Rose Street is one of the most addicting shit I heard this year
always play that with the monster kody interlude back 2 back what a transition
That’s one of his best songs in his entire catalog
Kens ipad = fantano’s yellow flannel
loved the way the album flowed together. the transitions between songs is damn near seamless. special shout-out for the transitions between "nameless" and "when sparks fly" and also "the spirit of monster kody" and "rose street". my favorite 5 are: magic, when sparks fly, papercuts, lemonade and rose street.
y’all’s banter this episode was fucking hilarious 😭😭😭 between the dj quik comparison and the interlude being a favorite track y’all had me rolling
This is for sure one of his best albums, amazing from beginning to end. Vince Staples hasnt missed since Summertime 06, and has only gotten better 💔💔
Stolen youth is his best project
I don’t know - Primadonna and the self titled album were misses to me. I fuck with everything else.
He's starting to become on of my favorites. His last 2 is what got the others didn't hit for me. But he's getting better and better
This album definitely Vince’s best since Big Fish Theory. While the production may not be as experimental, I’m absolutely in love with how Ramona Park Broke My Heart sounds. It’s really immersive and laid back, feels like a cool summer night. It’s sick.
Definitely will be more appreciated down the line I think.
This just might be my favorite Vince album yet.
When I think about the theme of numbness to real emotions when it is substituted with money or the grind to money, this album really encapsulates that feeling. The nihilism mixed with summer songs is so odd but fits imo.
Vince really in a zone rn. He mentioned this will be his last project with this type of content so I’m interested to see the next direction he takes.
And to B and Mykes point, he should be mentioned with the Coles/Kendrick’s because he’s that creative.
When Sparks Fly is this generations I Used to Love H.E.R - And it's gonna get completely missed by so many hip hop fans :'(
Vince has become my favorite artist over the last few years from when he dropped his self titled, his monotone cadence but dark and hard af(pause) subject matter on that one, he killed that one for me, and he did not miss a beat with this one. Big up Vince! Incredible project!
Favorite Tracks Overall:
When Sparks Fly- 5 votes (as it should be since this song is goddamn excellent)
Aye! (Free the Homies)- 4 votes
Magic- 3 votes
The Blues- 3 Votes
Dj Quik- 3 Votes
Lemonade- 2 Votes
Mama’s Boy- 2 Votes
Player Ways- 1 Vote
The Beach- 1 Vote
East Point Prayer- 1 Vote
Nameless- 1 Vote (cuz feefo love him some interludes ig)
No slide on the list?
@@nuneza1987 nope, and no rose street either which is kinda surprising. That’s my 2nd fave behind when sparks fly
Favorite tracks (as selected by D.E.H.H.) - "Aye! (Free The Homies)", "When Sparks Fly" (4 out of 5 liked these two songs). "DJ Quik", "Magic", "The Blues" (3 out of 5 liked those three songs). "Lemonade", "Mama's Boy" (2 of 5 of them liked these two songs).
Ya’ll should definitely interview Vince, shit would be dope
Vince should join them for an episode of ITMSO!
when sparks fly is so beautiful
“Wym he sound like Dj quick” 💀💀💀
When Ken said, I didn’t like it I immediately thought something was up. Then he brought out the iPad and I said, okay now that’s more like it! This review was straight comedy!
Damn that was quick, but great review! I’m extremely stoked to hear what you guys have to say about the new Billy Woods. It’s nothing short of a masterpiece.
🎯🎯🎯💯🙏 Absolutely! I came back to leave the same comment after listening to _Aethiopes_ again... Would love to hear y'all's thoughts! Another classic from billy, on one of the best runs I've ever seen.
Dj Quik also did the scratching on the Dj Quik song
This album hasn't really clicked for me yet. After a few listens, it still just feels like mellow extension of his self titled album last year. But Vince Staples is great, and after listening to what you guys said, I'm definitely gonna give it more tries. Hopefully I'll be just like Kinge.
This album will be up for a Grammy (even tho the Grammy’s are trash) This albums was a full story and it seems like he’s coming out with a play/musical so the visuals will be amazing and innovative. This was a shocking 10 outta 10
Vince always mentions the time he stayed in Atlanta cause things got to hot in Long Beach so he went there for like a summer or 2
Feefo bumping an interlude 😩
Man Vince Staples recent music just makes me sad as hell. His shit is just too real sometimes and it just makes me more aware of shit in my life. New album is still dope though
I was listening to Sadistik & Kno albums prior to this , so when I heraded this, WHEN SPARKS FLY IT just hitted different, almost like he was doing his own version of that sound
Dope album. His discography keeps getting better. DEHH crew comedy on this review. Good shit 🔥🔥🔥
This man Vince has been at the same level of brilliance since that verse on the Hive. Crazy 👑💯
Quit with all that tuff talk, bro we know you niggas ain't about shit 💯
shoutout to DJ Quik, goats like him suga free, mase and many others made that laid back west coast sound that Vince makes a living off these days. Vince a legend for respecting his OG's, 'specially when half his fans never heard of DJ Quik or the other west coast legends that came before vince.
So on ‘East Point Prayer’ he’s saying “fled to Atlanta” which I believe is a reference to something he’s spoken on before about moving to Atlanta for a short time around 15-16 years old in the aftermath of some trouble or situation he got into before moving back to California when he would begin working on music. The play into a Lil Baby verse just adds another level.
I like that album I can play it all the way through and I'm a fan since his old mixtape odd future days but he stick on his own lane this the best project to me 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I still have to listen to this one more times. But one thing about Vince is how he truly talks about violence etc. and gangster stuff without ever really romanticizing it.
Fifo called it. I wish I listen to this when it came out smh🔥🔥
I can't believe no one said Papercuts! 😲
Ken bringing out the iPad, I’m in tears
They broke this down wayyyy better than Shawn Cee, he was mad dismissive
I will give shawn the benefit of the doubt being it was his first listen. Its still currently growing for me as well. I didnt feel as bored as him but I knew I needed to go through it a couple more times
I understood Shawn because it was his first reaction and listen. I’m sure it will grow on him too.
I understood Shawn because it was his first reaction and listen. I’m sure it will grow on him too.
Bro I’m not gonna take someone’s opinion that lied about knowing all the samples to madvilliany serious Shawn’s credibility as a reviewer went out the door once I seen that video
I took a break from hip hop for obvious reasons but im half way thru this album and its amazing 👏 Vince is great
Dope album to me, can y’all review the billy woods album btw
Waiting on that Billy Woods, which at this rate could be any minute now😅…you guys are putting in that work
I think this album was a step down from his last LP but When Sparks Fly, Paper Cuts, Player Ways and Magic are some of Vinces best song. Sidebar on When Sparks Fly...I love how that track follows in the lineage of I Gave You Power and Me & My Girlfriend.
hard disagree has to be my least favorite vince project so far this one and the self titled have been very underwhelming imo. After prima donna and big fish i expected him to go down a more experimental route, but then he took a turn to a more west coast sound on fm ever since then he hasn't had a good project. The vince staples show singles fell flat on their face and i was just bored and not impressed with his new work
@@Bruh-mu6ol what do you disagree with? I said this album was a step down lol
@@Bruh-mu6ol FM and Self Titled were fire. Big Fish didn't hit for me
@@qthe6thman that the last album was good
@@qthe6thman also that the songs listed are some of his best
You know I was looking at When Sparks Fly as a song about being with a woman that took the fall for you. And that’s why he almost hates her now because she would never snitch for him but he wants to see her. Vince is crazy man
Me too I looked at it like a woman who went to jail for him lmao
Vince has been my favorite rapper since 11th grade definitely my album of the year
RPBH my favorite Vince project.
S/O to y'all
I see the upgrade from the SM58 to the SM7B
Very nice
Vince is funny (understatement) but has never been silly nor goofy in interviews. Thanks 4 this tho, asI dint catch the gun metaphor until this vid.
You gotta be prepaaared. Prepaaare accordinglyyyy
The way he was talking in that interlude 😂😂
He has mentioned in some interviews a few times that his mom sent him to Atlanta because he had to get away from Long Beach for a little while.
Vince has mentioned that he moved to Atlanta briefly after getting into some “trouble” growing up
Very solid album. Reminds me of Crash Talk with the lyrics being dark but the beats being mellow and bouncy
We see you in that blue.
Feel like I'm the only one who's favorite track is Papercuts. I don't get it. I just love he vocal sample on the beat and Vince's cool flow on top of it.
I love this album and had to go listen to his previous efforts hoping for more of the same.
I'm probably the only one who doesn't feel his past albums except for a few tracks on each of them.
I really liked Hell Can Wait, Summertime 06, Prima Donna and Big Fish Theory, but I wasn't a big fan of FM and the self titled. FM just did not connect with me at all, and my issue with the self titled is that although it starts off very strong it quickly fizzles out and by the end it left no real impact cuz of how short it was. Sort of like the new Earl album. It's just so damn short that it leaves no proper effect, you're just left wanting more, and not in a good way, in an "unfulfilled, this feels more like an EP" way. This album however I love, because it actually feels like an album
This is the 6th Vince album y’all reviewed. Shows how long he’s been in the game
I been listening to Vince from the start...it like 2011, 12..
Yup Shyne coldchain vol. 1 days
Looking back after watching the previous Vince reviews and they mention and agree with the DJ quick then but not here is hilarious
Album pure heat been listening non stop since it dropped its banging every time I'm in the whip the more I listen I pick up new things I love albums you can grow with 🔥
Philoso-Feefo
😂😂 …Or Feelosophy
I dunno if Vince is just super-lowkey or his label or whatever isn’t promoting him right, but I always hear about his projects after they drop from reviewers I follow, and it sounds like that’s how it is for a few people just from parts of this vid. Maybe I just don’t follow Vince close enough like that or maybe it’s just how he rolls.
Replay value very high
I enjoyed this album tis album all the way through first listen and immediately thought this is an AOTY Contender. I keep going back to it. I'm glad y'all really like this Album. I hope it makes some of y'all's top 5 mid year and top 10 end of the year. Also Vince & Ty worked together a few times and it's always been great chemistry.
He's said in an earlier interview that he moved to the south for a bit
Damn y’all was fast af with this one
Vince and Ty Dolla Sign have made a song before. On Big Fish Theory, it's called "Rain Come Down".
I feel like Vince just finally stepped up to Dom Kennedy level with this one. Just strong Cali vibes with this drop.
Can you doing a KB album review?
Myke the Kid C Town back again 💎
I really enjoyed this album. My fav Vince album’s Big Fish Theory, though. Feels like it’s cut from the same cloth as Yeezus but improved on that formula greatly.
Vince stayed in Atlanta for a while cause something went down where he had to leave his hood
I need to give it another listen, this album didn't hit like the last one for me.
First listen I thought it was mediocre, but now I think this album is great besides three tracks.
Yo,what happened to the Earthgang “Ghetto Gods” review? It’s one of the best projects of the year in my humble opinion
Idk why but I didn’t like this album. His self titled album was amazing & I always go back to his older albums but I think he mellowed out too much on this
Vince Staples has been super creative and consistent.
Another thing that is consistent is the way he juxtaposes the good w the ugly, beauty and loss, etc.
Solid album! North/Side Long Beach stand up👊🏾 Fresh Two Deaf Podcast.
Hold on Marshall done it too. Whole double entendre song. When Sparks Fly is like Eminem’s Darkness
Vince Staples is easily one of the best rappers in the last decade. This dude has a consistency and catalog that very few, if anyone else in the same era is touching.
This album is great and he's shown with this, FM, and Summertime 06 that he knows how to create a whole atmosphere to his music.
Probably my favorite vince album front to back.
Vince talked about living in Atl in his drink champs interview, not sure if he’s talked about it elsewhere
Another special project from Vince.
yeah vince actually mentioned that he had to live in atl in interviews
Vince & Ty Dolla have collaborated before.
Myke was spot on though. I love this album a lot more than the last one as well
Vince sounds like DJ Quik?! Rod needs to go ahead and donate those ears to science cause he clearly not using them 😂
You guys need to review KRS one’s new album
How does a producer get to get their beats used on this platform? Do you have to be a part of the Patreon community?
Love the roasting lol lol.
Dope Review 🔥
This was audio NyQuil music.
The album is a great bump to ride to
Bro its been 4 days?? Too early bro
the quality jump
Kinge lil baby is the one 💯✊🏿 get on board
I really like the album, I just don't think I love it. I've been a huge Vince fan since 2013 too. The only album I wasn't feeling was BFT, mainly because of the production, not Vince himself. everything else Vince has dropped has been A1. I think I just wanted a little more with the beats on this album. my favorite tracks are Magic, When Sparks Fly, East Point Prayer, Bang That, Papercuts & Lemonade.
Am I the only one that couldn’t vibe with Vince’s last 2 projects? I prefered Summertime 06, Hell can Wait, Stolen Youth era vince
Last two projects are more serious and sad. He was more energetic sounding before
Off first listen I thought the Self titled was cool but once I had the 2nd listen it really hit. Now it’s prolly my most played album of the year cuz of how short it is.
This new project is a step down but still need some more listens to fully digest it.
Yeah, I think “When Sparks Fly” is definitely written from the perspective of a gun, but I think the reason why he wrote it as if it was about a girl is that the song is supposed to represent being “married to the streets,” which he says in the next track (East Point Prayer). So in a sense the gun = the streets. But if you’re married to it, then you’d talk about it like a romantic relationship, which is why it sounds like he’s talking about a girl. Crazy!
That’s why he said stuff like “you forgetting that we made these vows?” Cuz it’s about being married to the streets
