When I first watched 13 wishes, I thought that Howleen wanted to turn her hair straight and pink to symbolize how she’s insecure and trying to fit in, and make herself more popular by having the typical straight hair that most of the characters in the show had. I thought that by the end she would’ve returned back to her original hairstyle as a way to convey the whole movies message about self-love and acceptance but nope 😭. So upset that she kept her hair pink and straight for the rest of monster high especially in the dolls! She was so cute with her og hair! 😢
Garrett Sanders mentioned that his boss said that they thought her hair wasn't girly enough. That was why her hair went from afro orange to straight pink. Just pure racism from mattel.
I also remember this happening to Orange Plossom from Strawberry Shortcake when I was growing up. Honestly she was completely remodeled. It wasn't permanent but she went from being dark skinned with kinky hair to looking like Dora with longer hair.
They took away all her uniqueness and make her look like everybody else!!!! All the Monster High characters have straight and long hair besides Honey Swamp, we don't need Howleen look basic!!!! Also let not talk about how they never give Clawdeen's her doll with that afro!!!!
until recently i deadass thought howleen’s two looks were different characters, and honestly? fair bc i saw myself in the og howleen design and for mh to take that away from me and other black kids was cruel. g3 is a mess, especially when it comes to rep but i do appreciate them giving her back her curls. (though theyre loosened…gotta love the evolution of texturism smh)
As someone who doesn't really know much abt MH I 100% thought her old and new designs were different characters Her og design is so cute 😭 and it gives more personality to me then her new one, which feels too similar to EVERY OTHER MH doll
I believe Garret Sander (the creator of Monster High) said the reason for change was because Mattel forced them to change Howleen's design because Mattel didn't believe it'd appeal to young girls or something along those lines
The second she became a main character they lengthened and straighter her hair and dyed it pink to make her more "mainstream" feminine **coughs** white fashion adjacent Edit: almost like mh making the Clawdeen the main character but lightening her skin and taking away her brown hair 🤨
@@KaminoKatie did you not see the Freak Du Chic Clawdeen doll? She’s the only doll in that line of dolls that had her skin color changed, and they made her lighter skinned no less.
I thought I was the only one upset by this! It's insane how often natural hair is erased in the media. Also, this is not related to MH but it's wild how minimized natural hair is, we can create so much art but that rarely gets highlighted. Hair shows are an awesome way to see the creativity within the community bc wow
I grew up being the only black kid in classes because my mother moved us to a white suburban neighborhood so my sister could get better special needs education. Well to help us assimilate my mother had us get silk presses every 3 months so that our hair was straight like the white girls. That messed up my self image but I’m much better now. 24 and happily natural!
Yesss, the permanent hair change always bothered me immensely. Like not only did you give her straight hair, you also gave her long generic hair that made her blend in with alot of the other MH cast-like her og hair with the hoodie was a such a cute look. Also the orange color was nice, and made her stand out, however you can still give her that pink or multi-color hair, while still letting her keep the short tight afro!!
That's something that stuck with me for a little bit. Howleen's hair changing from kinky to straight curly. Like--why change it? A change can be fine but like-really?
You should definitely check out Honey Swamp! She’s from Louisiana and has a super kinky afro. She was introduced around the time Howleen got redesigned :) I do think it’s important to note that Howleens Design in 13 wishes was inspired by Nicki Minaj from that time but I obviously get the point here.
Honey Swamp is amazing and has some of the absolute best designs MH ever released. But she's not as interwoven into the main plot as Howleen is just by virtue of being one of the main three's siblings, and of course her unnatural skin tone. I hope we get her back in her full glory in G3 :(
Apparently Mattel had to do something with the change , also Clawdeen and Clawd where supposed to have natural hair for a MH Sports themed line that never made it past protoype , this would hace been the first time Clawd would have been introduced instead of the one in the two pack with Draculaura, and it ended up becoming a sports fashion pack, Clawdeen appears with an afro for one of the illustrations for her fashion pack , which is strange cause their is no Clawdeen doll with that hair texture that was released. The only Black-coded character with consistent natural hair has been Honey Swamp for all of her releases , which has been few and she is not a prominent character, it's a shame none of the more prominent Black-coded didn't get this hair texture back.
even as a young kid I didn't like the sudden hair change I loved her og style and color. If they wanted to make her hair pink I wish they would kept her og hair but made it pink that would've been so cute!
I like the new design better because of the outfit and darker skin and the fact that the hair is pink…but I definitely agree that her hair should have maintained its texture. Nice video harri! (8 also love the 13 wishes movie.
Howleen’s hair was changed because they didn’t think her original hair was “appealing to girls”. To me that’s bullshit because as a little girl I though her classic design was better.
ooooh i remember me and my friends being SO mad over her new hair back in middle school. we loved the curls and tomboy-ish fashion style (which touched me especially as a curly haired baby butch) and we were so sad when she lost them. i really hope that they get more texture diversity in the new gen bc even as a white girl seeing people with curly hair being beautiful really helped me get over that internalized texture shame.

This was a nice video and I'm glad you spoke about it. Even though I'm not apart of the monster high community I've seen images of Haowleen with her afro and it was beautiful. In the g1 cartoon she looked fine, I don't why they would do that. This shows you that we should make our own stuff and tell our stories from our perspective. I'm apart of the Brony community and one character that I see as black is pinkie pie. She wore afro puffs and a afro in eg. So I understand the frustration I love my natural God given hair peace.
NGL Howleen became one of my favorites becuz of her style and how it complimented her beautiful puff, other than the fact that she looked like me it was her hair that stuck out to me the most. I remember being so confused when her hair still looked straight even after 13 wishes was released, I honestly thought that look was supposed to “fit” the “theme” of the film but sadly that wasn’t the case. BUT, i am entirely grateful that my first Howleen doll was when she had her two pink puffs…I found it at Burlington on a shelf with tons of other howleen dolls with the same look 😂

I think reason why is because howleen was insecure about her looks and wanted to start off the year with a new look; at least that's what I think according to 13 wishes.
Coming from a white girl, I liked the curlier hairstyles better, I felt like it looked better. I also like how the hair feels on the dolls when it’s the curlier kind 😅

Hey I’m still at the beginning of the video but 13 wishes howleen isn’t a g2 character, they just changed how she looked. The last movie in g1 of monster high is great scarier reef, and 13 wishes is way before that. Anyway I heard you say the different designs were from different generations and had to say something. Cause maybe you didn’t know and I can pass on what I know. Anyway I love your videos, and I’m sure I’ll love watching the rest of this.
Even as a white girl, i hated howleens design change :( her original outfit and hair was so cute, she really stuck out as the tomboyish little sis, but after her redesign they took all her personality away. She seemed like any old generic character and that was really disappointing. Her new design doesnt seem like her at all
Genuinely I hope all the people who act like monster high g1 was perfect need to see this video and many others. I understand g3 has its issues and mattel missed hard several times in the past, and a lot of people are casting the past mistakes aside because nostalgia. I remember when 13 Wishes came out I was like "THATS Howleen???"
I love your videos but I think there’s a character your forgetting who has a really cool design with tight curls too, her name is Honey Swamp, and she honestly has one of my favorite designs from MH as a whole!
I still remember when I first saw gen 1 howleen I was so in love cuz her hair was just like me and my sister's. Then when they took it away cuz "it didn't sell" it's a suck move fr. I will never forget that
I also liked howleen's redesign in 13 wishes but her afro is def cuter and a much better design, i noticed on her dance class doll she has pink curly hair in 2 bunches but that's the closest they got to her original
I don't really watch the Monster High series (I didn't get into the hype or collect the dolls), but I kept up with it since friends were into it. About the only things I've noticed the franchise has done right are trying to be inclusive (making Frankie Stein non-binary for instance) and giving non-white voice actors a chance to shine (ex: As of 2022, Clawdeen Wolf is now portrayed by a black woman and 3/5 of the ghouls in the main cast are not voiced by white women.) However, considering all the controversy the franchise has dealt with, trying to be more inclusive and casting non-white voice actors is the bare minimum. The live-action movie is a gigantic mess that should have never been greenlit to begin with (they should have done their research and hired a different director) and changing the dolls to not have natural hair was a dumb move on their part because it alienates a large portion of their fans (Mothers of little white girls aren't the only ones who buy the dolls.) I was considering checking out Monster High, but given these facts, I'm not gonna bother. I can't support a company that turns a blind eye to those things just to make money.
333rd like 😸 I loved the video. listen to you while I sew lil buttons and saftey pins all over this red plaid Tripp dress. Thought You’d appreciate that fashion detail 😹 especially since it’s Tripp, v y2k … but yeah u are perfect to listen to when you’re doing stuff!
When I was younger I got so pissed about her new hairstyle. Howleen was one of my favorites a child and I was heartbroken. Almost every other monster high character has that hairstyle, not saying it’s ugly, but it’s just super boring.
Honestly I hate the new reboot but one of the only things I like is that they brought back Howleen's curls, there's a lot of other things off with Howleen's new design but at least her hair is curly again 😭
@@afrolens9532 I don't remember properly but I'm pretty sure in the new animated series she has type 4 hair??? They took away her like, fur melanin though 😭

I honestly likes both of them but i don’t think racist to change her hair Because if you think about it black people straighten their hair sometimes not to “fit in” but just because they thought it looked good Because she kept the pink straight hair after so maybe she just liked it
I loved Howleen's natural hair. She was so unique there was no need to change it. It was so odd when they acted like her changing her hair made her cool too.
I wasn't surprised that they gave howleen long straight hair because the writers wanted her to look more eurocentric and tbh i would have preferred if they just made her natural hair pink instead of giving her a pink lace front 🤷🏿♂️
I think they should have kept it short and curly but different dolls would still have the tight orange curls but longer or tied up but nah fuck howleen and let's give clawdeen the same hair as the other ghouls
@@drawingwinxstyle9193 I'm tryna say they should have kept Howleens tight orange curls but different dolls should have longer curls oe tied up and about clawdeen they gave her a permed hairstyle always or a tiny bit of curls
You are so right they don't want to have just a black character they had to make them different races such as afro-latino which I know that is basically a black people but still they could not have them just be black characters they had to change the race of them which pisses me off
Are you sticking straight to the movies or do you think you’ll touch on the new show/ G3 too? I know you touched on it near the end. Cause I would like to hear your perspective on what you think about the change they made to G3 clawdeen concerning her not being canonically mono racially black. I believe you did make a video on the actor but I can’t remember if you did it on the new character background itself. I don’t think that info was out yet.
@@kenta5871 She’s explicitly said to be biracial. Her ethnicity is afro Latina, but her race is mixed. On top of that, she a half werewolf and biracial… tragic mullato x2 lmao. Which is one of my main issues with that change. I would link it but I’m unsure if she allows links. It’s all the same info. i'm wondering if it also had something to do with like, the dolls themselves..? it baffles me honestly. and like.. i'm part of a doll collecting community (of sorts) and a huge part of that involves styling hair, after watching this i did some research and it's like,, it's literally possible to accomplish those kinds of curls in doll hair. like that's not some crazy impossible out-of-the-question thing; they really had everything lined up, they've historically been really into styling the dolls' hair in the first place and so they really just had every reason to continue having howleen with her natural hair but just.. didn't....? it doesn't make sense in the slightest honestly
WAIT I NEVER SAW THE OLD HAIR UNTIL LOOKING AT THE THUMBNAIL JUST NOW AND IM LITERALLY SHITTING WHY DID THEY CHANGE IT????????? the old hair was way better cuz it looked more unique compared to most girl characters ive seen and its just a cute style in general 😭
Allow me to remind you not only did they get rid of Howleen's natural hair and gave her more ero centric hair but they had really done it because Mattel told the creator Garret Sander that the look was not "feminine" enough and they forced him to make her more pink and girly just to sell off more dolls to girls. This is an example of how shady big buster companies can be when it comes to representing others!
in my opinion, the pink colour they changed it to was cute, but the hairstyle she used to have was more recognizable than the one they changed it to! If they wanted to redesign her, I think they could've kept her former hairstyle and changed the hair to the pink they used in the redesign.
Idk why they went with a more bland design for her when her og design was more unique, they took something away when she went from cute interesting curly hair to a boring long pink hairstyle rooted in black discrimination
MH getting rid of Howleen’s natural hair is one of my villain origin stories.

….after all this time I thought this was a different character that’s how unrecognizable she is 😂
I absolutely love howleen from monster high and I think her Afro fits her, but personally I don’t like my own hair curly I prefer straight
I love your videos but I think there’s a character your forgetting who has a really cool design with tight curls too, her name is Honey Swamp, and she honestly has one of my favorite designs from MH as a whole!
i forgot about her cause they didn't really push her like that. i wish they did more with her.
g2 is the 2016 reboot, g1 is 2010-earlier 2016 so straight hair howleen is still g1
I still remember when I first saw gen 1 howleen I was so in love cuz her hair was just like me and my sister's. Then when they took it away cuz "it didn't sell" it's a suck move fr. I will never forget that
Catty Noir is also black (literally a black cat lol) she also has the long pink straight hair
Immediately hearing ojamajo de ban ban in the intro made me fall in love with your channel
Ngl I always thought she was wearing a wig. I figured her mom finally let her wear one since she was in highschool💀
About the only things I've noticed the franchise has done right are trying to be inclusive (making Frankie Stein non-binary for instance) and giving non-white voice actors a chance to shine (ex: As of 2022, Clawdeen Wolf is now portrayed by a black woman and 3/5 of the ghouls in the main cast are not voiced by white women.)
However, considering all the controversy the franchise has dealt with, trying to be more inclusive and casting non-white voice actors is the bare minimum. The live-action movie is a gigantic mess that should have never been greenlit to begin with (they should have done their research and hired a different director) and changing the dolls to not have natural hair was a dumb move on their part because it alienates a large portion of their fans (Mothers of little white girls aren't the only ones who buy the dolls.)
I was considering checking out Monster High, but given these facts, I'm not gonna bother. I can't support a company that turns a blind eye to those things just to make money.
They could of avoided the backlash if they just made the afro pink to make it more girly
I’m glad her natural hair is back in the g3 series

They aren't the tight curls though is the issue
@@afrolens9532 I don't remember properly but I'm pretty sure in the new animated series she has type 4 hair??? They took away her like, fur melanin though 😭
@@katybcat8286
If they wanted tight curls they would afro out
But it's loose
Also if you saw some screenshots she is lightened in the photos but the show does have her with darker fur
It’s just so annoying to see, like the girls used to actually be pretty diverse and sickening with their alt styles and fashion. Now it’s so sanitized and Yk when these companies Sanitize shit the black features are the first to go
I honestly likes both of them
but i don’t think racist to change her hair
Because if you think about it black people straighten their hair sometimes not to “fit in” but just because they thought it looked good
Because she kept the pink straight hair after so maybe she just liked it
The creators confirmed they changed it because it made her look boyish which is racist because Black women are always told our hair is never feminine
@@drawingwinxstyle9193 oh that’s cool I just saw it in a meme and liked it so I made it my pfp
I agree. I feel like in the life action and new cartoon clawdeen is a bit white washed
I was like who is this girl in 13 wishes
You are so right they don't want to have just a black character they had to make them different races such as afro-latino which I know that is basically a black people but still they could not have them just be black characters they had to change the race of them which pisses me off
All they did was change the color and hairstyle.. not a huge deal my guy. She could just be wearing a wig. Shes a wolf girl.
I was really sad when they changed her hair.
Dont forget Honey Swamps😔
i did forget about her sadly. they didnt do much with her she literally had left my mind.
Her original hair looks better .
Girl 13 wishes is definitely in G1 Howleen wasn't even in G2.......
The new character is still monoracial. She's just Afro-Latina. Her mom is also Afro-Latina, while her dad is African-American.
@@kenta5871 She’s explicitly said to be biracial. Her ethnicity is afro Latina, but her race is mixed. On top of that, she a half werewolf and biracial… tragic mullato x2 lmao. Which is one of my main issues with that change.
Look up is clawdeen biracial and you’ll see a few sources, you can read those or look up the yahoo article done on it (the main source with the interview with Lisa McKnight and new doll info). I would link it but I’m unsure if she allows links. It’s all the same info. There are other character things in it such as confirming Frankie is nb, deuce has two moms, Drac is half Taiwanese, and Toralei is racist now lmao. Half a joke.
Edit: I do want to add that the deuce and Toralei info is in a confirmed post by someone else and not the yahoo one. Also Clarification
Living for the cat noir Durag 😍🖤💚
i'm wondering if it also had something to do with like, the dolls themselves..? it baffles me honestly. and like.. i'm part of a doll collecting community (of sorts) and a huge part of that involves styling hair, after watching this i did some research and it's like,, it's literally possible to accomplish those kinds of curls in doll hair. like that's not some crazy impossible out-of-the-question thing; they really had everything lined up, they've historically been really into styling the dolls' hair in the first place and so they really just had every reason to continue having howleen with her natural hair but just.. didn't....? it doesn't make sense in the slightest honestly
Oh I love panty and stocking and I love that necklace
Pink hair Howleen is Gen 1. Gen 2 was late 2016 to 2017. Howleen wasn't even in Gen 2.
Her had a little sister doll in G2, but she was never in the media surrounding G2
Clawdeen isn't even black anymore in the new monster high stuff. She is now latheeeeena. How her brother Claude is going to be is he latino?
She is Afro-Latina
@@drawingwinxstyle9193 Thanks for confirming that. Sounds like her dad could be creole too. That's cool.
Honestly I love both hairstyles but I like her long hair more🤷🏻♂️
Yes exactly i am Dominican and have very curly hair and I did not like the change at all
i think that her og hair wouldve been adorable pink! they coulda given her dreads or braids if they wanted her hair to be more straight but.. nope.
in my opinion, the pink colour they changed it to was cute, but the hairstyle she used to have was more recognizable than the one they changed it to!
