People seem to always forget the fact that being Latino/Hispanic is an ETHNICITY not a race. It's frustrating when people always assume that all Latinos have tan skin when there are a ton that are way darker and way lighter. I myself, am Hispanic with very light skin and dark curly hair. All Latinos don't look the same...
Thank you!! I'm the whitest, most european looking Latina you'll ever see (skin so white it reflects light, bluish green eyes, blonde) and yet I'm still Hispanic. You can find people from any races here, americans forget their population is not even a half of all of Latinamerica lol
Disney also whitewashed Fred and with him it's native erasure because in the comics the character is Ainu (native Japanese). What's worse is that the Ainu community is basically never represented (I can't think of any other character I've seen that is Ainu) and they could have given them something meaningful in a big budget Disney movie. Instead we get another comic relief white guy
As an Ainu person, I have complicated feelings about this because I don't want these companies to get their culture-vulture claws into us. marvel's "kabuki" character, for instance, WALLOWS in the sexual violence and imperial violence against feminized Ainu people. With western writers this comfortable flaunting their sexual and violence fantasies against us, and turning us into monster or animal people... yeah I don't trust their version of "representation." Turning Fred white is a huge problem (for a lot of historical reasons etc etc), and if he had to be changed, it could have been to anything. Either way, it's not representation unless we're the ones representing it.
@@odie-coyote that makes sense. I hope more Ainu representation comes from Ainu creators in the future! Do you know any pieces of media by ainu creators, btw?
That's why I appreciated Turning Red because Tyler is biracial black boy, but the difference is he's half black (Afro-Canadian) and half Asian (Vietnamese).
@12:34 "Asian women are Latina..." THIS!!!! As a mixed Asian-Latina person I strongly second this. Just today a neighbor was completely baffled learning my surname for the first time. Because my surname is Spanish while my face looks Asian. No joke they just kept repeating my name to themselves while staring at me. After they ask if I'm Latina/Hispanic and I answer yes, they respond: "Huh...I thought you were Asian". Because apparently I can't be both🙄.
Ngl the best way they could have shown Honeys ethnicity is to show her culture or family or something like that. Because excluding light colored people of poc community's isn't ok. I know some latinas and my Aunt(black) that are very light. Very white passing. I don't think you have to LOOK latina to be latina. After watching all: I COMPLETY get it. I would love to have more darker colored characters. There is a saturation of racial-ambiguous people and it's sad that the darkest they want poc people to be is a light paperbag. Also *cosplays as Deku* Comments: Deku isn't black. 😑
the cosplay community HATES minorities, esp black and Jewish people. the faceless ayato situation and the fact that non-jewish people don't listen to jewish ppl when they tell ya'l to NOT wear armbands and other antisemetic shi in a character
everytime I go onto another black cosplayers comment section it's always, "xxx character is not black!" "you're too dark, cosplay this xxx character instead" like...do you think we give two shits???
In the movie I didn't know Honey Lemon was Latina until a night scene where her skin looked darker away from light. Also the way she pronounced Hiro's name. I think it was more noticeable in the cartoon
@@Alienaddikt right? people don’t know what latino means! it means being from (doesn’t specifically mean from, but if your parents your grandparents are from) latin america, it is not a race.
@@Alienaddikt no, if their heritage or descent is from latin america, if they choose to identify with it they are latino or hispanic (not including spain)
ehhhh as a latina woman, i'm glad they made Honey lemon as she is...they always make them "spicy" and sassy 💀 having a nerdy yet girly latina character is a good thing + i have her stin tone so hearing ppl say "make her darker or, stop the straight hair" is kinda weird to me??? i think no matter what, people still can't accept that latinos come in all shapes, colors, heights and hair textures 🤷🏻♀️ this is a Pepa from encanto situation
I understand where you’re coming from since I’m Latina with brown skin and distinct features but white Latinos are always the ones that get the representation in Hollywood and not a lot of dark skin Latinos. I, as a Latina, has grown tired from just seeing white Latinos appear on my screen because it’s like they think only white Latinos exist when there’s so many Latinos, like me, with dark skin and distinct features.
@@fantasyyyworld i understand that, have you watched the Bratz movie? They hired a spanish woman to play Jasmin 💀 and made her a stereotype of mexicans with mariachis, la cucaracha and shi-
Darker skinned Latinas are not accepted though, both from other Latinos and Anglo whites. Please read up on Amara La Negra’s experience on colorism, as people like her are thought of as too black to be part of the community. People with darker skin and curly hair need more representation in all communities.
The issue is that the Latino community is also very racist and colorist, and don’t accept darkskinned Latinos into their community Even with Encanto people were very racist towards Pepa. I’d say it’s colorist to have her be the only Afro latina in the family but also lightskinned when shown that her little brother could be darkskinned In terms of curly hair, Brazil and other Latin American countries would have to make huge natural hair movements because black women’s hair in those areas are not accepted Then we have the actor that plays Namor in Wakanda Forever. A lot of (white/white passing) Mexicans are racist towards his character because he is indigenous We have to address this is and has been an issue for a long time, as it is with any other colonized parts of the world
I wouldn’t be surprised if someone thought concept art Honeylemon matched their idea of the “typical” Latina, and had no idea that lighter-skinned Latinos exist. I certainly didn’t until I met some irl and saw them more in cartoons. And I think that should be included in the message of “Latinos can look like anything”. But ultimately I think Encanto did this better because there were people of all skin tones, sizes, and hair types in just one village. I definitely agree with what you said about Baymax tho. Yeah he’s cute, but he’s not the soul of the franchise
I loved that Pepa is pale and ginger, despite her parents being darker… this happens a lot in families… same with Isabela being darker than either of her parents… mixing in Latin America goes back so far into the past, everyone has these little “recessive gene” surprises in their genes, and it’s awesome to see that being represented in Encanto.
@@gaf407 the pepa situation is rlly relatable to me bc i have a redhead cousin that just came out of nowhere???? like literally, her dad is black and her mom has brown skin and she still isn't white but has red hair and that's so funny to me
"They are only marketing Baymax and none of the characters" I mean, look at him, he is completely white. (I'm so going to hell for that joke, I'm sorry.)
Disney owes every Latina woman, Black woman, Asian woman, and just every woc an apology. I hate how they keep doing this shit. You can tel that they see dark skin as less feminine(especially since Honey Lemon is the most girly character in the cast so of course they made her white-adjacent. 🙄).
wym latina women? latina women do not have the same exact skin tones as one another. being latina does not mean you have dark skin. i am latina and have very light skin. anybody can be latina. we are not all tan or black.
@@olderalt.4066 I never said you all were but can you stop acting like being a light-skinned or white-passing Latina is oppression? No you're not all tanned or Black but insisting that "we're not all brown, white Latines exist too!" isn't the wig snatch you think it is, those brown and Black Latines still have it harder than you...thank you and have a nice day. 👋🏾
Speaking as a light-skinned Latine, I couldn’t tell that Honey Lemon was Latina until I was told so, and I live in a place where there’s a diverse Latino community with Afro-Latinos, White Latinos, Indigenous Latinos, etc. And honestly like in hindsight yea I can see her as Latina but it felt like something that was pushed to the side, y’know?? Like aside from her accent and the “mi casa su casa” joke, the writers did not put effort into making it clear she was Latina. And honestly changing the race from Asian to White Latina (arguably white, but also I look white even tho on my mom’s side it’s defo more indigenous mesoamerican Latino so idk) was quite pointless since they took no effort to make her undeniably Latina (ESPECIALLY since like you said Latinos can look any way so it’s harder to pinpoint Latino representation in media unless it’s explicitly shown in some way - without becoming a stereotype at least)
One thing to also note with Stuck in the Middle is a lot of the characters are played by actors who only have one Latine parent and one white, non-Latine parent. Additionally, the mom is played by an Italian woman Additionally with America Chavez in the MCU, she is played by a non-Afro Latina girl when she’s Afro-Latina (or at the very least relatively dark skinned) in the comics
I’m seeing a few tone def comments. Nothing in this video said that representation for lighter skinned Latinos are bad. The LACK of representation for ALL Latinos IS bad !! y’all can like honey lemon design while still acknowledging that she literally looks like a white girl but they’re trying to portray her has a POC! i didn’t even know she was anything but white until I watched this video. Thank you for shining light on this topic ❤ love your channel
I hate it when people assume biracial means half-poc/half-white, especially half-black/half-white in the USA. I’m a multiracial person, in a multiracial relationship. I’m African American, Slavic, and Native American. My boyfriend is Pakistani, Anglo-Saxon, and probably some other South Asian stuff (we don’t know). I hate the assumptions that people make about race.
As A White passing Latina is was really nice seeing A character like Honey Lemon and in animation I personally feel it’s kinda rare. Now in Hollywood in general, Latino rep is so dam small that it truly baffling and we do need representation of all kinds cultures.
i think that hiro being half white is actually good. its pretty uncommon to find good representation of mixed folks in the media (speaking as a mixed person myself) and i know that there are a fair amount of wasian people who were happy when they found out that hiro was like them. i 100% get what youre sayinng about that though, i just think mixed rep in the media is also important (in all forms)
I actually thought honey lemon was just a nerdy non-hispanic white girl in the movie so yeah... Hollywood literally trying to do every latin women characters to look like Jennifer Lopez since she came out
Took me so long to find out Honey was latina. And I love her It wasn’t until I saw the concept art that got me wondering why she was brown then No, not all latinas are brown, but it’s actually more rare to see brown and black Latino people in media. The most you get is either a white Latino person or a white Latino person that has a slight tan. Sometimes an ambiguous race Latino, but it’s clear they are leaning more towards white presenting Also that Disney show featuring the actress lying about being latina? Crazy
This video is so good! I loved Honey Lemon the first time I saw the movie years ago, but didn't know until this year that she wasn't just some white woman. Seeing that concept art made me so frustrated. I can't help but think what the movie and show could've been for me. I would've been all up in the fandom. For whatever reason a lot of people be thinking Asian people aren't people of color unless they don't have light skin, and specifically don't consider South Asian people Asian. Having an all Japanese team would've been very diverse, but considering Japanese people get considered white adjacent by many...the racism is too much but no surprise from "The Mouse". You've been putting out all these hits! I feel spoiled! Thanx Cap!
You talking about the marketing switching to just Baymax made me have a "wait, whens the last time I've seen Lilo from Lilo & Stitch in marketing?" realization. It's usually just Stitch! I love Lilo, & the rest of the characters, they're very well done.
As a white latino the comments from other white latinos irk me a bit. Let me explain... yes I get that Americans have this perception that latinos are all mixed-race or tan-skinned mediterraean people, I also grew up with Americans on the internet not believing I was white because I said I was Chilean. BUT, and this is a big big but, I NEVER lacked representation. Most Latin shows, no matter where you are from in LatAm, have primarily white and light skin casts; think El Chavo del Ocho, Caso Cerrado, La Rosa de Guadalupe, Violeta, Avenida Brasil, El Chapulin Colorado and so on, MOSTLY white and light skin. So whenever I hear a Latino complaining about a lack of white-latino representation I just have to roll my eyes because Americans being ignorant doesn't equal us not being widely represented.
@@olderalt.4066 the video is about American media targeted mainly to an American audience. Besides, white latinos who feel underrepresented are more often than not... Americans, and the denial of my race has only been perpetuated by Americans, so I'm sticking to what I said.
I didn’t even know Honey Lemon was supposed to be Latina, and I’m Latino! I found out just a couple months ago after I saw Genesis Rodriguez was her voice actress on Rodriguez’s wiki page. My mind was blown! It makes me so mad that they had Afro-Latina and Indigenous-Latina character designs ready to go for her but made her white-Latina instead (nevermind changing all the characters from Japanese in the first place…). The colorism is unreal. Lovely video, thank you for addressing this important topic
im not gonna even lie i thought honey lemon was a full white woman until now 😭 obviously theres no problem with her looking white as it is accurate to how *SOME* hispanic ppl look but they could've done a little more to showcase her culture or something. Theres no way you can guess shes spanish based off looks alone and if that was disney's intention its kinda bad representation. If they really wanted to have good hispanic rep they could've shown off more of her culture (if they wanted to keep her white) because even the whitest hispanics I've met have some connection to their culture
@@harriyanna i know right?! she literally posts about how proud she is of her italian heritage sometimes. i would love to know how her and ronni's audition processes were. i am glad she is nowhere near as problematic as ronni tho, she's all for representation and stuff, but it's kinda hypocritical cause she took a hispanic role knowing she wasn't that...
Uh oh. It is the Ariana Grande situation all over again. (When are white people gonna learn that white people with a tan don't become POC and that most white people cannot naturally become as tan as POC (not even as light-skinned POC)?)
I SWEAR THEY’RE LIKE “Well this is as close as we can get! Italians have similar features to them! YES there was a time Mexicans and Italians were once grouped together because white people thought we were the same..
Speaking as a white latine person, I had no idea that honey lemon was latina until now 💀, like I feel that they could have showed her speaking spanish or something to show her ethnicity bcuz wtf
12:24 Thank you for saying that, latinos are really diverse ethnic group, we really dont fit only in the "tan/olive skin and brown hair" Heck, speaking only of my country (brazil) theres people who are descendents of germans, italians, african, japanese, chinese and more.
lmao 🧍🏽♂️i always got confused as to why us hispanic/ latino kids got told to bubble in the 'white' choice when it came to race on the tests that they gave us. When most of the time the schools i went to were full of hispanic/ latino kids.
i’m a latina, born and raised in a hispanic country, and being here for 19 years of my life. latino is people are originally from someone who comes from latin/south america or the caribbean, hispanic is spanish-speaking people from spanish-speaking countries. i am a light skinned latina with straight hair. encanto is an example of great hispanic and latino representation, pepa is light skinned with light hair and green eyes. not everyone who falls in the latino umbrella is tanned or dark skinned, there’s many people i know who do not fall under this umbrella. disney has had representation and is still consistently trying to give wider representation to these audiences, from the owl house, encanto, the proud family, elena of avalon, coco, stuck in the middle, and so, SO many more, and it’s not limited to the characters but this extends to their casting choices and creators. honey lemon, while to other audiences outside of the umbrella might seem offensive or a misrepresentation (like the case with encanto), but many latinos don’t get heated over this, if i asked ANYONE i know if they care about honey lemon’s skin color and it’s more than likely that not many will get offended. many people are fighting our battles when most of us just don’t care much, while honey lemon was not the best example of representation for a specific percentage, it doesn’t mean they ruined her character. you should try and get in touch with latinos and let their voices be heard, get their opinions in matters like this, because in this video i just heard how you specifically didn’t like the representation, but the demographic it’s centered about is not one you fall under. also, disney marketing baymax exclusively is specifically and marketing tactic. this movie isn’t really for grown people, it’s for KIDS. kids are going to want a toy of the lovable, squishable character in the movie, it’s the same for lilo and stitch, it’s the same for other franchises with very recognizable mascot characters.
Exactly, I feel like people from other groups always try to teach us about our own business all the time. I had a British guy in my residence telling me that I'm catholic cause' I'm a latin christian... I'm a protestant and started speaking out, cause' not all latinos are catholic and he is not the one who should tell what I am. Having American black people and white people trying to explain their ideas of race to me and trying to define our experiences is to tiring, we should be the ones talking about this. I don't even like the use of the term POC, it seems arbitrary and just further divides people. No, don't use a term invented in the American Apartheid to define me or describe me without my consent, specially if I'm not from the USA and don't share the same history. The ideas of latinos about ourselves are always lost in translation and I feel that we need our own essayists to give our perspective because this is upsetting
Hi! a brown Mexican Latina speaking here, harriyanna making a video like this is actually very important because I don’t think you guys realize that white latinos and light skin latinos ALREADY get enough representation as it is. Yes you’re correct with the part of not everyone uses latino. Just like how I personally don’t like using Hispanic as it’s offensive to me (my personal opinion). We should have these conversations because colorism in our community is so bad and NO ONE is talking about it. I am sorry who is a victim of colorism growing up as I was a lot darker when I was younger and it hurt to see not a lot of latinos not look like me so much. All I had growing up was Dora. That was it!
I've noticed that it's not just Honey Lemon who looks similar to Rapunzel face-wise. A Tumblr user compared all the Disney and Pixar girls in 2015 with side by side face comparisons. All of them had similar facial structure, despite Honey Lemon and Go-Go clearly not being white. For further contrast, she did a side by side face comparison of Disney and Pixar male characters, finding much more diverse facial structure. Another post that went viral was a comment from Frozen's animator, Michael Lee when he said "animating female characters are extremely difficult. They have to go through a range of emotions, and having a film with two female characters and building distinguishing aspects was hard." So unfortunately, it's not just women of color. It's women in general and goes back to what you were saying on your fatphobia video about Hollywood's beauty standards. Disney can do better than this!
P.S. I just wanted to add that I'm not by ANY means saying Disney changing the races for marketing purposes was right. I FULLY agree that Disney was just doing that to add in more white characters and after seeing Honey Lemon's concept art, I'm really irritated we didn't get that version of her. I adore Honey Lemon and even considered cosplaying her at one point. However, at that point, Disney already has several white and white passing female characters, around 10 of which had blonde-ish hair. The only reason I included the quote from Michael Lee and the comparison of the facial structure of the girls was to point out the broader issue. That being, Disney tends to go with the traditional Hollywood beauty standards (again, as you pointed out in your other video on fatphobia) and because of that, they don't even bother straying away from the same facial structure for their animated female characters. Women of different sizes and races have different facial structures so when they don't see themselves on screen, it's disappointing. It wouldn't kill Disney to make a slightly curvier female character (especially since Big Hero 6 already had Honey Lemon, Go-Go, and Aunt Cass to work with in Big Hero 6, a franchise where the characters weren't princesses! I also fully agree that Disney's animators are lazy on purpose sometimes. When Wreck it Ralph 2's first trailer was released, Disney got a lot of backlash from fans because they Americanized Mulan, they made Merida slightly thinner (and redid her dress and hair), and they whitewashed Tiana (and Pocahontas...and Jasmine...and Moana). Anika Noni Rose stepped in and the animator gave the excuse that "CGI animation did different things to the characters’ color tones in different light compares to hand drawn original characters." Anika Noni Rose had to politely explain to them that the reason so many fans complained about Tiana's redesign was because little girls want to see themselves in the Disney princesses and by taking away Tiana's defining features (rich skin, rounded nose, wider eyes, darker hair, etc.), they were taking away something that we "rarely get to see in fantasy." Disney responded by making Tiana's design closer to her original, switching Merida's closer to her original, and darkening the skin tones of all the other affected princesses. So yeah, Disney definitely did this on purpose. Disney, do better!
idk why, i see that in a lot of media (including disney.) male characters are generally made more diverse when it comes to body types, etc. majority of female characters i have seen have the same or similar facial structures and the same hourglass body.
this is gonna sound hypocritical coming from me since im a pale latina, but goodness i had NO idea honey lemon was supposed to be latina. I guess her accent was supposed to signifiy it because she had one if i believe?? but other than that i thought she was caucasian or at best asian of some sort since two other characters in that cast were asian. I dont even know what part of south america she's supposed to be from, in my opinion i think she should've been kept Japanese tbh.
Latina/venezuelan here. Do you have any idea of how many mixture colonization left only in my country? We have Arab genetics, European genetics, indigenous genetics, black genetics, asian genetics... The list goes on 🤷
The topic of “being white” is a lot more complex then most people make it out to be. Historically, being white has always incorporated an amount of power to it, it hasn’t always just been skin color. Their was the Irish being excluded in being recognized as white due to their low status during early immigration. Then instances like Sarah Rector who was named white due to becoming oil rich, despite being a black girl and having dark skin. Culture likes to fade in and out different cultures into categories based on whatever events are happening in the world. Regardless, white by nature is founded wholly on desperation, privilege, and bias. White-passing characters are absolutely no different then just making the characters white to begin with. If media wants to have a person of color, they need to add more attributes that more so clearly show their ethnicities. Big lips aren’t enough. Just being dark isn’t enough. Barely curly hair isn’t enough. Yeah people exist who don’t have every last colored feature but that shouldn’t be an excuse to be lazy and as white-passing and white-catering as humanly possible. Nobody’s going to be mad if you give your mixed character textured hair and darker skin. All you’ll be doing is pushing away the people you really shouldn’t want part of your community to began with.
I'm not going to lie, I thought she was Southeast Asian, like Filipino, Indonesian, or Thai. I had no idea disney was marketing her to be Latina. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Learn something new every day.
Honestly I didn't even know she was meant to be latina before I watched this video. Like I watched this in portuguese cuz that's my native language (I'm Brazilian) so the accent thing didn't get to me at all. If she was meant to be latina I'd like to have seen more references to her culture. Latinex people have so many looks that in the end all the characters from Big hero 6 could be Latino if we are talking looks. Like I could see any of them existing here in Brazil, cuz we have black, asian and white people in Brazil too. I'm mixed japanese and european for example, there are mixed japanese european women outside of Latin American countries. What differentiates me and makes me Latina isn't how I look, because somewhere out there there might be a girl that isn't Latina that looks exactly like me, and what would make me latina would be Brazilian culture.
I like this video since it touched a lot of topics I agree with. However, when we talk about representation we have to talk about the diversity of looks within a culture. It’s specifically said in the video that a latina woman can look like anyone. I am Mexican and Puerto Rican so I want to address somthing that bothers me. My family is a mix of different kinds of Latinos. Me personally, I have black native and white ancestors. I look like a common Mexican girl, my cousins look Italian, black, and even Asian. When I go to a country, let’s say Puerto Rico, I will see about 20 girls who look like a honey lemon walking around the streets. When referring to representation, we cannot restrict ourselves to just a certain kind of a Latina all Latinas are valid. I know a lot of people who are self-conscious that they are too white passing so having a character like honey lemon, being blonde haired and blue eyed is a representation in its self. It shows young girls that you can be Latina and still look white. True it’s unfair that Disney changed an Asian character to a girl that looks like Rapunzel. but this “ white washing” actually has its benefits because it’s now justifying that just because you look like a different race doesn’t mean that you are invalid in the way that you look. Representation is representation. You can’t complain about that.
0:58 THANK YOU !!!! I thought I was tripping, I always saw this Latino or not check boxes and I was always so confused and thought it must wrong and never understood why it like that. Thank u for bringing it out.
Another awesome video. I am being pissed off I am latine (Nb) and this really boiled my blood. I get pissed because it made me think of an abc show called "Beauty and the bakery" the cast was very light skinned (because of course) but I knew they were latine because of how they spoke, the pastries they made, sometimes speaking Spanish, and talking about deep stuff like coming out to your parents that you are lgbt with a latine pov. Honey Lemon I adore her. I think she is sweet and very likable but I have to agree. She just seemed like a white person mainly because there's no culture. And we don't even know what Latina she is and that's an issue in itself. Sorry for ranting, but stuff like this shows issues of Disney trying to be broad as hell for money.
just gonna say this, i kinda dislike how white people are stereotyped to have no culture when they quite literally do. I'm not attacking you by any means but don't you think it's a bit ignorant to say that white people have no culture?
Man, the only thing about Honey Lemon that made me consider she isn't white is her accent. I believe I finished The Series before I learnt she was latina the entire time.
Man I remember when that promo pic came out and everyone I followed online was like "what the FUCK is this disney" Also since im at the part where you talk about people just paying attention to Baymax, can we talk about how a lot of people end up only obsessing over Stitch and kind of end up ignoring the rest of lilo and stitch? Its something Ive noticed a terrifying amount and Disney kind of does more Stitch merch (edit!!! oops; you do mention that but even so)
people can like stitch. that's not a bad thing. liking stitch isn't a bad thing, lmfao. you can't expect every single person, especially kids, to be deep into the context or lore of a kids movie.
I agree with what you said about them keeping the team Japanese because we don't see that a lot in the Western region. But I wouldn't say the entire team being Japanese is by definition "diversity." in itself. Diversity would need to consist of a cast with 2 or more different races. If a movie mainly consist of one race, then it's not a diverse movie but I will say this, if they wanted to add some white characters fine but whitewashing Hero and his brother along with Honey Lemon was too much.
To be fair, Hiro and Tadashi are very clearly japanese-AMERICAN in the movie and they act like many of the Asian-american kids I grew up with. I’m not sure where the idea of them being half-white came from, I always thought their whole family was Asian, including Cass
You always keep it 100! When it comes to Disney films w/ p.o.c and animals, the animals are always marketed and never the p.o.c. Beauty and the beast never markets the clock or the candelabra, it's always Belle. Same with Cinderella. You'll never see the mice on anything! The list goes on....
Honestly never had to enter my race anywhere.... Until I went on my semester abroad in the UK. And than I suddenly had to say where exactly and what type of European I am.... And that felt very invasive. Like what do you care about my race... I want to get tested for Corona.
I always love your videos! You have the most interesting discourse! I had no idea until after I had seen the movie that Honey Lemon was supposed to be Latina, I learned it on Tumblr like months later 👀 i also find your cosplay comment answers really enlightening! I would love to go a cosplay event sometime, but I do get anxious because I don't think I can pull off looks like the ones I see on Insta, so you are building my confidence 😊❤️
I honestly had no idea Honey Lemon was supposed to be Hispanic having only watched the movie once. I only found out a few weeks ago when I was talking to a friend who read the comics. She seriously comes off as just a vague white American. She gave me Taylor Swift vibes, and TSwift is from the same area I live in, Berks County, PA, where we have a ton of PA German, Mennonite, etc. (We also have a huge Puerto Rican population, but I've never met a Puerto Rican person in this area that wasn't visibly or audibly so. Many/Most are like 2-3 generations removed from their family members who moved here AT MOST.) She just doesn't have many other indicators that she's supposed to be latina, even beyond her very white features.
you fail to realize that I'm pretty sure a cast can be diverse even if they are all japanese. peoples heritage to not come from the same exact places and everyone is unique. a black person can be japanese, etc.
@@olderalt.4066 @i like those odds. Yes it can, but she meant an all (or almost all) ETHNICALLY Japanese cast, which is literally not diverse. A cast can be diverse and contain people of different heritages, but that's not what she was describing. She was saying that an all Japanese cast is already diverse, but then they changed people's ethnicities/races to add diversity. However that is literally against the definition of diversity, because diversity is of multiple types of things (genders, races, cultures, etc), having an all (or almost all) ethnically Japanese cast in Japan is not very diverse. A cast of black, Asian, white, Hispanic, indigenous, etc, IS diverse, no matter where it is set.

Idk if you're taking suggestions for the wall colors buuuuuuuut. The bottom one would keep the room bright while adding color. Ok imma keep watchin the video now xD
yass, that´s how i made my Black Parade costume... and I used fabric glue instead of sewing stuff, it doesnt´s have to be a work of art and I still got praises for it too.
I could’ve sworn she was half Italian. Well, of course they could still have made her a lil darker. I guess they just wanted to make it more noticeable. She kinda looks like Ariana Grande to me, who is also Italian. I see what y’all are saying tho. They definitely could’ve kept her skin color in the concept art.
As someone whe is not american I can't really understand why they focus so much on race. Here in europe we think more of different nationalities and we focus more on cultures than on physical features. For example I never had to specify my race, its not even written in our IDs. And If you are constantly asked for your race in america it leads to them seperating their own society too much. Also race is a very complicated topic. Alot of mixed people don't know what to say in these information papers. I am just saying its intersting and it probably has to do with the history.
It is, for much of the US’ history different racial groups were treated differently than others, to the point of everyone having a different set of rights. Public segregation ended not even 100 years ago and the effects of that are still felt today
I know right!!! As someone from Latin America, is really interesting to see how much Americans focus in classifying people according to their race. In Latin America our race is pretty much irrelevant.
@@bandaqueenlove9134 Oh, I didn't want to be disrespectful. I was just saying that since I've lived in Latin America my whole life, is very interesting seeing that in America people care so much about what race you are. For example, in official documentation they always ask you if you are black, white, asian, etc. But in Latin America that would never happen, they only ask your nationality and that's it.
they should have made honey lemon have curls and darker skin and literally anything to make her not look like rapunzel but latina (-coming from a latina!!)
you can't look latina. you right there are enforcing unwanted stereotypes about latina women. i am pale with brown wavy hair but I am latina. I am the same skin tone as honey lemon and i have seen latinas with "unusual" hair colors like red. 😕
Hard agree on the show being better than the movie. The only characters who got any significant focus in the movie were Hiro, Baymax, and Tadashi. The rest of the team got sidelined so hard and felt like one note stock characters. In the show they have significant development and are much better and more well rounded characters. Baymax is awesome but he’s not the only thing going for BH6 in the show at least. I didn’t hate season 3 but the executive meddling was really bad and it makes me wish they stopped after season 2.
this happens wayy too often where concept art gets whitewashed more qnd more during development, reminds me of mercy in overwatch's original concept v how she looks in the game
George Lopez (the show, not the actor) had the same problem with the casting. Masiela Lusha, Albanian actress, played Carmen who is Hispanic. Nothing against Masiela, she's an incredible actress; it just the casting was the issue.
i disagree, reasons: Encanto (most characters have darker skin) Wish (new movie with a black girl) Blue fairy from pinocchio (she was white in the original, they turned her into a black character) Little mermaid (she was originally white, they turned her into black) i think we have alot of representation at this point and there's no real reason to complain about it...
Honey Lemon was the best character in my opinion but she was so under used in the movie. She should’ve had so much more screen time than Fred (no offense to Fred at all). I fell in love with her character so much, I loved her clothing style so much despite being goth myself. She deserved so much more.
Like honestly I wish there were tan latinas in midia like yes there are tan but there more of a light tan closer to white then actual tan so I agree. Also yes to the cosplayers I follow a lot of poc cosplayer but I’m sure if I post as a Hispanic/Latina who isn’t white I won’t get a lot . Ohh I saw an amazing ladybugs chat cosplay at a con a while back I ran to them to take a picture
I slightly disagree with what you said at 25:10. I don't think non black people aren't interested in TV shows with a predominantly black cast, but rather that's what big entertainment media companies think. The fresh prince of Bel-Air, the boondocks, Everybody Hates Chris, family matters, even the Bernie Mac Show and more are TV shows with a predominantly black cast that non black people enjoy but Hollywood just ignores this for some reason.
I have a genuine question here and I know this video was posted a little bit ago but I hope somebody finds this. Me myself is an afrolatina women, my dad is black and my mom is brown. But if Latina isn’t a race then what would she be? Her entire family is from Dominican Republic but as you could probably guess from this video they also come in all colors my grandpa is much more lighter than me and my mom but my grandma is also from Dominican Republic. What discerns this? How do I ask this question?
People seem to always forget the fact that being Latino/Hispanic is an ETHNICITY not a race. It's frustrating when people always assume that all Latinos have tan skin when there are a ton that are way darker and way lighter. I myself, am Hispanic with very light skin and dark curly hair. All Latinos don't look the same...
I appreciate this since I'm half-Chilean and I always think that I don't look Latina :(
@@theAngelMiel I have light eyes and pale skin too, probably more from the other side and stuff, but even my mum who's Chilean has light skin!

Yeah same, I’m Latina and I have really pale skin and straight hair so some people assume I’m just white
Genetics do weird things sometimes kids will come out looking like their great, great grandmother/grandfather. Genetics are just a weird thing.
With western writers this comfortable flaunting their sexual and violence fantasies against us, and turning us into monster or animal people... yeah I don't trust their version of "representation."
Turning Fred white is a huge problem (for a lot of historical reasons etc etc), and if he had to be changed, it could have been to anything. Either way, it's not representation unless we're the ones representing it.

Darker skinned Latinas are not accepted though, both from other Latinos and Anglo whites. Please read up on Amara La Negra’s experience on colorism, as people like her are thought of as too black to be part of the community. People with darker skin and curly hair need more representation in all communities.
The issue is that the Latino community is also very racist and colorist, and don’t accept darkskinned Latinos into their community
Even with Encanto people were very racist towards Pepa. I’d say it’s colorist to have her be the only Afro latina in the family but also lightskinned when shown that her little brother could be darkskinned
In terms of curly hair, Brazil and other Latin American countries would have to make huge natural hair movements because black women’s hair in those areas are not accepted
Then we have the actor that plays Namor in Wakanda Forever. A lot of (white/white passing) Mexicans are racist towards his character because he is indigenous

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone thought concept art Honeylemon matched their idea of the “typical” Latina, and had no idea that lighter-skinned Latinos exist. I certainly didn’t until I met some irl and saw them more in cartoons. And I think that should be included in the message of “Latinos can look like anything”. wym latina women? latina women do not have the same exact skin tones as one another. being latina does not mean you have dark skin. i am latina and have very light skin. anybody can be latina. we are not all tan or black.

Additionally, the mom is played by an Italian woman
Additionally with America Chavez in the MCU, she is played by a non-Afro Latina girl when she’s Afro-Latina (or at the very least relatively dark skinned) in the comics
I also thought Honey Lemon was white.

Took me so long to find out Honey was latina. And I love her
It wasn’t until I saw the concept art that got me wondering why she was brown then
No, not all latinas are brown, but it’s actually more rare to see brown and black Latino people in media. The most you get is either a white Latino person or a white Latino person that has a slight tan. Sometimes an ambiguous race Latino, but it’s clear they are leaning more towards white presenting
Also that Disney show featuring the actress lying about being latina? Crazy
People saying latinos have to be tanned skined and have curly hair are forgetting argentina, chile, paraguay and uruguay exist 💀
"americans being ignorant"
americans are not the only ignorant people on this subject not to mention not all of them are, man.
@@olderalt.4066 the video is about American media targeted mainly to an American audience. Besides, white latinos who feel underrepresented are more often than not... Americans, and the denial of my race has only been perpetuated by Americans, so I'm sticking to what I said.

im not gonna even lie i thought honey lemon was a full white woman until now 😭 obviously theres no problem with her looking white as it is accurate to how *SOME* hispanic ppl look but they could've done a little more to showcase her culture or something. lmao 🧍🏽♂️i always got confused as to why us hispanic/ latino kids got told to bubble in the 'white' choice when it came to race on the tests that they gave us.
Oh! I forgot: obligatory "next time put Aunt Cass in the thumbnail for more clicks" joke. 😂
They have to go through a range of emotions, and having a film with two female characters and building distinguishing aspects was hard."
So unfortunately, it's not just women of color.
I honestly never registered honeylemon as a POC. she looks yt so she is based on the definition of race. Shes definitely ethnically POC tho

Why ON EARTH does anyone have to list down their race or ethnicity on ANYTHING??? Let alone on a school test!!??? What??
diversity.....i guess.

Man I remember when that promo pic came out and everyone I followed online was like "what the FUCK is this disney"
Also since im at the part where you talk about people just paying attention to Baymax, can we talk about how a lot of people end up only obsessing over Stitch and kind of end up ignoring the rest of lilo and stitch? Its something Ive noticed a terrifying amount and Disney kind of does more Stitch merch (edit!!! oops; you do mention that but even so)
people can like stitch. that's not a bad thing. liking stitch isn't a bad thing, lmfao. you can't expect every single person, especially kids, to be deep into the context or lore of a kids movie.
You do have a good point, they could have simply left the team Japanese
Wow!! I'm so early!! Thank you so much for talking about this, Harriyanna!!
@@kordeliiius9821 Isn't their aunt Caucasian? She didn't look Asian at all to me.
@@antonioalford4403 I guess that's fair
I'm Latine and this video is how I found out that Honey Lemon is Latine 💀
I would love to go a cosplay event sometime, but I do get anxious because I don't think I can pull off looks like the ones I see on Insta, so you are building my confidence 😊❤️
when i was watching this video yesterday i accidently dropped my phone on my tablet and completely broke it but somehow this video was still playing
Yes big hero 6 is so underrated!
Many/Most are like 2-3 generations removed from their family members who moved here AT MOST.)
She just doesn't have many other indicators that she's supposed to be latina, even beyond her very white features.
Having an all Japanese cast is literally not diverse. Having only one thing is literally not diverse - by definition
you fail to realize that I'm pretty sure a cast can be diverse even if they are all japanese. peoples heritage to not come from the same exact places and everyone is unique. a black person can be japanese, etc.
@@caoyuann Oh well, then yeah, i agree with you.
wait,, Honey Lemon is latina???? I DIDNT EVEN KNOW-
and im latino like what
where was it mentioned or smth cuz i never knew
n if she spoke spanish or smth i couldnt tell since i watched bg6 on the latinoamerican spanish translation
edit:
while im not mad at honey lemon being lightskinned n blonde (where i live theres a lot of those HELPPP), im dissapointed after seeing that concept art cuz cmon she looks so different to what she looks like now 😭
BUT ALSO i wouldve liked her to have some ethnic characteristics,, maybe a nose shape, or eye shape,
or ofc SHOW that shes latina w idk culture or her mentioning it I DONT KNOW,, just SOMETHING cuz i ltierally could not tell
edit2: nvm they just 'whitewashed' for market n didnt do anything w her? FCK THE MOUSE !!
I didn't know a lot of this until now! You're really good at what you do :)
Idk if you're taking suggestions for the wall colors buuuuuuuut. The bottom one would keep the room bright while adding color. Ok imma keep watchin the video now xD
lmaoooooo hopefully i can get around to paint the room eventually
@@harriyanna Either one will be gorgeous fr fr. I'm gonna check the wall in each video like "Ooooo wich one she pick?" 🤣👀
yass, that´s how i made my Black Parade costume... and I used fabric glue instead of sewing stuff, it doesnt´s have to be a work of art and I still got praises for it too.
Honey Lemon's original design is awesome I'm so upset. Awesome video!
@@bluecherry1011 I feel like saying that race is irrelevant is kind of erasive of what Black people/Afro-Latinos in Latin America go through
@@bandaqueenlove9134 Oh, I didn't want to be disrespectful. I was just saying that since I've lived in Latin America my whole life, is very interesting seeing that in America people care so much about what race you are. For example, in official documentation they always ask you if you are black, white, asian, etc.
But in Latin America that would never happen, they only ask your nationality and that's it.
I try not to focus my life around it but it is a very big topic in the US and it gets shoved into your face sometimes.
Not all latinos have dark hair, tan skin and curly hair 💀
FR. i'm latina and light skinned
Baymax totally reminds me if of stich and I’m glad you brung that of
NOT THE PBS KIDS INTRO😂😂
great video disney is so lame when it comes to this
they should have made honey lemon have curls and darker skin and literally anything to make her not look like rapunzel but latina (-coming from a latina!!)
not all latina’s have have dark skin and curly hair…if anything you sound like you like giving out stereotypes
@@wackyturnip true
you can't look latina. you right there are enforcing unwanted stereotypes about latina women. i am pale with brown wavy hair but I am latina. I am the same skin tone as honey lemon and i have seen latinas with "unusual" hair colors like red. 😕
You would look AMAZING as Bayonetta.
My music teacher is Latino and she’s white.
Not gonna lie, this is the first time hearing that she was a woc. Many years of thinking she's just white. 😭
I didn’t hate season 3 but the executive meddling was really bad and it makes me wish they stopped after season 2.
this happens wayy too often where concept art gets whitewashed more qnd more during development, reminds me of mercy in overwatch's original concept v how she looks in the game
idk man, i feel as if somebody wants to make a darker skin toned character lighter, then they have every right to. it's their character.
George Lopez (the show, not the actor) had the same problem with the casting. Masiela Lusha, Albanian actress, played Carmen who is Hispanic. Nothing against Masiela, she's an incredible actress; it just the casting was the issue.
Fun fact you can be latino and white
(If you need proof look at argentina)
also yes i'm argentinian
i disagree, reasons:
Encanto (most characters have darker skin)
Wish (new movie with a black girl)
Blue fairy from pinocchio (she was white in the original, they turned her into a black character)
Little mermaid (she was originally white, they turned her into black)
i think we have alot of representation at this point and there's no real reason to complain about it...
Great content! i love what you had to say on this!
Thanks for making this! (damn i was also gonna do one XD)
Big Hero 6 came out on my birthday and Ik my little dumbass would’ve latched onto honey lemon so hard if she had her original design 😂
Great video! Completely spot on.
Comparing Honey Lemon to Pepa or Luisa Madrigal, I would have never thought honey lemon was Latina.
Honey Lemon was the best character in my opinion but she was so under used in the movie. She should’ve had so much more screen time than Fred (no offense to Fred at all). I fell in love with her character so much, I loved her clothing style so much despite being goth myself. She deserved so much more.
I legit had 0 idea Honey was Latina. I just know her from the movie, but did they have any hints in the series?
Them lightening Honey from the Concept art is disappointingly expected of disney
I've never seen honey lemon but commenting for the algorithm.
We missed out when it came to honey lemon
An entire team of people of the same race is diverse wut?
Baymax sells merch, kinda like Stitch.
GREAT VIDEO
I didn’t even know HL was supposed to be Latina
Me adding a lot of non-white people in my upcoming series as a white person:
did I……go to far?
Not surprised about Ronni Hawk she problematic as heck
I have a genuine question here and I know this video was posted a little bit ago but I hope somebody finds this. Me myself is an afrolatina women, my dad is black and my mom is brown. But if Latina isn’t a race then what would she be? Her entire family is from Dominican Republic but as you could probably guess from this video they also come in all colors my grandpa is much more lighter than me and my mom but my grandma is also from Dominican Republic. What discerns this? How do I ask this question?
