The only one I dislike is Lagoona which is sad because I use to love her. Now, with her new design I feel like shes not even the same person. They could have just updated her old look and make this new design a cousin of hers or something. Just, eughhhh the pink skin makes me think she's fleshy like a dolphin rather then scaley like the beast from the black lagoon.

Also, the choice to make Abbey Bominable actually from the Himalayas (which stretches over India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan and China), where the Abominable Snowman legend really comes from, instead of the original Russian/Eastern European accent which wasn't even faithful to where the legend originated, was so nice. Her mom in the series is actually wearing a sari-like style made of icicles and snow, and it makes my heart melt!! Yes to letting traditional styles get to be monster-fied in a respectful way too!!

i think my only real gripe is i wish they embraced the edge, as mentioned in the video, more they were gothy and weird and it’s what made me fall in love with them. the aesthetic is what drew me in. i feel like if they keep to their palettes, maybe tone them to the darker colour, i feel like it will be great. i wish they did have the extreme heels personally because i love that bizarre extreme. otherwise, the other steps are in such a great direction. i feel like the spirit of the g1s is almost there but not fully embraced just yet

We are in the times when everyone wants big booba goth gf and everyone embraces being unique with such a wide variety of goth subcultures. I would personaly appreciate if there was another character like robecca but more into cybergoth vibe too! I think that would look cool, addint the contrast of neon colours with black. Also goth subculture itself has such a wide variety to chose from. Not to forget emo, punk, alt, metalhead fashion. Nowadays its more common than ever and id appreciate some characters to be bit more into that spectrum. Personaly its what i loved on gen 1 clawdeen. With the strap boots, earrings and leather jacket, she would be the coolest, especially considering her personality. She would be gorgeous as a more punk character. The only one sticking to that is draculaura which is bit of a shame, although i very very much appeciate her pointy bangs. Saw that on so many goth girls and always loved this hairstyle dearly.
Personaly i really hate Lagoona and Ghoulia in gen 3, but thats just my personal take i assume. Toralei is fine. Only gripe i have with frankie is the shirt, but other than that this gen is better than what i expected. The art for Abbey terrified me and i hated it, but the doll loos actually great.

I agree. I have never liked neon, and holographic clothing has always been a 50/50 for me so the new fashion choices really really bother me. I understand that this show is made for preteens, but the fashion doesn't make sense to me. G1 was also made for preteens, but the characters themselves were meant to be highschoolers and wore what was trending among teens. That has been completely thrown out the window with G3. None of what they wear is trending among teens. Not even a little bit. The whole show just seems to be more in line with late elementary/middle school and I wish they had just committed to that. If they had just changed the setting and canon ages to middle school, it would all make sense.

Body diversity doesn’t begin and end with straight size vs plus size. I think it would be cool for the dolls to have varied muscularity, chest/hip sizes, etc. but also there’s the issue of mixing and matching different characters’ clothing that could be disrupted if you make their bodies too varied

THISS! Frankie being taller is nice to see! clawdeen having a thin body is nice, draculara having a pear shaped body is nice, and people keep mistaking Cleo as “plus size” or “curvy” but she’s more of an hourglass shape! and now abbey has a similar body sculpt as draculara but she’s taller than everyone else! I am hoping for Iris’s body to actually be plus size since we are seeing more of her and even in the youtube series which are doll accurate!

36:55 I think there’s a larger issue with Lagoona no longer being Australian than just ‘people want the old Lagoona back’- in some of the 3d movies and parts of the show, Lagoona was implied to be representation for Aboriginal Australians, with her love interest, Gills parents not wanting to accept her because she’s a ‘Salt Water’ (or Fresh Water, I don’t remember which) sea monster instead of the more ‘common’ opposite and thus is viewed as lesser. Very basic but still similar to how Aboriginal people in Australia are treated as lesser today. Some people also argue that her curly hair is reminiscent of Aboriginal hair but obviously I’m not expert on that. Representation for Indigenous Australian people is next to absolutely zero in media, let alone in Australia itself. So to me at least it IS quite disappointing to see Lagoona no longer be Aussie. Obviously the original rep wasn’t the best and was very watered down (no pun intended) but I wish they could’ve done a better job on it with the remake instead

This is a headcanon though, there's not much besides hair texture in lagoonas design that alludes to her being actually aboriginal. @@altalt479yeah but like, the entirety of this reboot is about changing the characters. Lagoona’s Latina in g3, which I don’t mind, but also speaking as an Australian I agree it would’ve been amazing if they could’ve gone further with her original character and made her aboriginal. The story between her and gill in the web series wasn’t able to get much light because the episodes were so short and didn’t really focus on specific plots for a long time (unless you count Cleo’s cheerleading episodes) but I love the idea of them being a mixed race couple because they come from different waters, that’s so cool.
Don’t get me wrong, from what I’ve seen of the show I love everything about it. But I think it’s absolutely a missed opportunity. Would’ve been nice to have an aboriginal actor voice her if they were able to do that as well

The discourse around Lagoona no longer being Australian is a bit deeper than simply "I liked her as Australian." Because of the freshwater vs saltwater debacle in Lagoona and Gill's relationship in G1, some people interpreted Lagoona as being aboriginal-coded and the freshwater/seawater storyline as representing racism. Plus there was the line in her G3 song describing herself as "spicy," which a lot of latinos have pointed out is a stereotype. Hopefully as G3 progresses, the writers will be more careful to avoid those sorts of things, and maybe a new aboriginal character can be added to the cast!

Clawdeen is an entire different issue, which has been discussed to death already. I fully understand every aspect of the dissatisfaction. Another huge issue is the distribution of the dolls. Additionally, it was played off as a joke in the video, but I am also saddened that Lagoona is no longer Australian. I understand it is important for Latina representation, but there was an amazing opportunity for Lagoona to be an Aboriginal Australian woman. Australian culture is something I’ve never seen explored in a doll line or nearly any pop media before, and there are many stories and cultural myths that could have been explored for her. My biggest, BIGGEST problem with Gen 3 is that Ghoulia used to be really good representation for disabled/mute/selectively mute people. I mean OK, some people might not like having a literal monster represent their disability, but the entire franchise is monster, so you might as well represent disabilities (like Frankie's limbs!). Saying this as a very disabled person, btw. When my illnesses flare up, I become partially mute and clumsy myself, so I related to Ghoulia. She's really lost that uniqueness to her.
Update: OK so she spoke another language but she still understood English perfectly and went to school in English? Ghoulia was never meant to be representation for the mute/selectively mute however.
She spoke all the time, but spoke in Zombie, another language.
Cleo spoke Zombie and actively talked with Ghoulia. She was never mute or selectively mute.
The G3 Ghoulia is actually disability rep, and states that Zombies are said to be "slow" and struggle to move as fast as other monsters mentally and physically, but Ghoulia is determined to put this stereotype to rest and uses a skateboard to move around at the same speed as other monsters, and studies to ace her classes as well as join a lot of clubs. She is representation for mobility issues, developmental delays, and processing disorders now, and it's so important to recognize that she is actual rep now.

And god I know that sounds silly as fuck lol, like I know G1 wasn’t exactly counterculture either, but as a kid who actively got mocked for dressing the way some of these dolls dressed, it felt validating to see them. It also showcased different alt styles in really cool ways. The new designs don’t feel alt at all. You can scroll tiktok for like 5 minutes and see many people dressed the way these dolls are. I know partly that’s because generally there’s a lot more acceptance of alt styles in the modern day, but there are still alt subcultures they could have drawn more from.

Polypropylene is the cheapest hair material you can get, on top of that it can DISINTEGRATE on its own. @@pupa_hye it will, unfortunately. There's treated polypropylene, (the thing that the base Cleo has), and there's untreated polypropylene. Treated polypropylene should last a bit longer, and with today's doll hair technology the polypropylene in general should last a tiny bit longer, but that hair is going to go no matter what. In about 10 to 15 years time depending on different things like the environment and how good the hair is and what not, it's going to start falling out of the head. It's going to disintegrate no matter what you do, that's why a lot of people that collect dolls actually reroot the doll hair.
The best you can do is just to make sure the hair is clean and appreciate the doll while you can. Or you can start investing in buying synthetic doll hair like Saran and learning how to re-root a doll, but we should not be doing Mattel's job for them. As someone who has no nostalgia or experience with the franchise and just watched because I love this channel, it's kind of surprising to me how much of the discourse around comparing G1 to G3 seems to just boil down to "It's different than what I grew up with so I don't like it" when I feel like that's kind of the point of new generations in general. Not to say that new dolls can't be for old fans, but I feel like those old fans kind of tend to skim over the fact that they're not the target market and the current generation that is the target is a lot different than when we were growing up. This is just my opinion, but I think a lot of people making the criticisms about g3 not being "alt" enough aren't really taking context into consideration.
During the late 2000s and early 2010s alternative styles were far more niche, so when Monster High came out it was not only able to corner such a market other dolls hadn't yet, but introduce a new generation to those styles!
But as seen with g3's "tiktok" fashion, alt fashion is far more mainstream than it used to be. Mattel simply can't replicate the effect the original dolls had on the public as a result, so it makes sense they'd try a different target audience this time around.
My main takeaway is that due to that, whether you like g1 or g3 better really just has to do with what youd personally be looking for in that kind of doll line. Neither should be seen as objectively "better" or "worse" than the other, because they're clearly going for different things. If the fanbase could just accept that I think the lovers of both generations (especially g1 fans) would come across as far less hostile.

I was definitely more into Ever After High as a franchise as I found the story and characters more interesting but I still really appreciated the style and design details of Monster High. It's a shame they lost the bold alternative looks the original line had but at the same time fashion trends also change over time so sticking too close to the originals might have made them feel dated to a younger demographic.

I agree with your take on the fashion, but also if you look at all the MH lines you'll find that G1 loses a lot of it's alt influence pretty quickly into it's run. It's bold fashion, but not necessarily alt. There are exceptions to this ofc, but overall it's not as alt as a lot of people make it out to be

I really miss the series, I would've loved to see where it ended up had it not been canned. That being said i think thease designs have potential, in the way that we'll get to see how they develop over a new generation :)

As someone who adored the old dolls and goth vibe, I actually also really love the new generation (as an Aussie though I also can't get most of the dolls yet)! One criticism that kinda bugs me is people saying the ghouls look too young. You look at any G1 character bio and you'll see that most of the characters are around 15. I know a lot of adult collectors loved how mature the dolls looked, I did too, but seeing so many people say they hate how childish they look while completely ignoring the fact that they literally are children just bugs me a bit.

As and Australian let me just say……..there aren’t a lot of us in main stream americanised media. Lagoona was the only Australian character in any American show I can remember growing up (we only really had British or American shows here). I grew up by the beach swimming on the Great Barrier Reef and I related to lagoona so damn much. She was the first toy I ever bought for myself as a child. She is the reason my favourite colours were blue and yellow when I was little. She was the only character that ever sounded even remotely like me (the accent was so bad oml but I lived for it)
I felt like she was my character, she was my literal obsession……….so when g3 hit I felt my childhood kinda die in a way. Idk, she isn’t like me anymore. My relation to her and familiarity I had with the character is gone. She isn’t Australian, she isn’t blue and yellow, she doesn’t live in the Great Barrier Reef……kinda depresso.

Like maybe have her be born in Honduras and live in Australia, or the opposite. I wish they kept her curly hair and maybe her skin tone. I really don't understand why they changed that 😭

36:43 just a mention on this as an Aussie, a lot of people were upset as First Nations regularly headcanoned her and saw her as First Nations. First Nations people are nearly never represented in media, like ever, so they felt safe and happy with a character they could consider one of their own.
When it was found out she was no longer going to be aussie it upset a lot of First Nation people as they lost the one character they could consider their representation.
Of course it was just a headcanon but it was a popular headcanon that was there as rep that First Nations lacked.

On the contrary, it also comes off as lazy representation. Production team thought "hm, we don't have anybody for the non-binary checkbox yet? Ohh, what if we take the Frankensteins monster, after all they're made up of different body parts anyways" (which plays into the "queer/neurodivergent characters being non-human"-stereotype, which still applies to Frankie due to being "created" rather than "born" like most other monsters) and had to do nothing else except use different pronouns.
Personally, I wouldn't even want Frankie to be more androgynous. I would've wanted a cool younger sibling that's nonbinary and more visible as such. The theory of Frankensteins monsters being nb is not bad itself, it's just weird if you apply it to a character that has never had any gender-related issues prior to that.

I'm one of those folks you mentioned that likes watching videos about things they don't know about! From what I've seen between the original generation and now, I mostly agree - brands do what they feel like they can to keep up with current markets and not all redesigns will be bangers! It's impossible to please everyone, even if they take into account that they didn't even have to re-release anything at all, y'know?
It's more important that the people who resonate with these dolls get what they need - feeling seen and represented, inspired by, comforted, etc.

Personally i look at the dolls differently because im a customiser and not in the fandom, but i recently got my hands on a g3 draculaura and im pleasantly surprised. The clothing and accessories feels very well made for playline dolls ( apart from that horribly ugly and cheap cape ) and the hair is the best rooted ive had in a while for playline dolls. ill actually be keeping it and not going the reroot or wig route. The only complaint i have is that my doll came with a very wonky earring on one side thats not in the lobe, but basically in the head. The hair was very, very greasy but luckily thats an easy fix.The bangs were too long in my opinion so i cut those too and i honestly cant wait to repaint this doll, i love the fuller bodystyle

    • draculaura and cleo having different body types. they aren’t vastly different but it’s a start! maybe we will get even more body variety on the future

as a femme-presenting non binary person frankie having a feminine style is really important to me. anytime a doll line includes a non binary character theyre almost always depicted with short, buzz-cut hair and neutral clothing. obviously its completely fine, a lot of non binary people dress like that, but i think its really important to represent all flavours of non binary, its important to show that we're not just an in-between between female and male. frankie dressing like they do really speaks to me and makes me happy beyond belief, ive never felt represented by a character in regards to my gender so well

As a femme AFAB nonbinary person, very few things have EVER made me feel as validated as G3 Frankie. Feminine aesthetics are typically seen as way more loaded gender-wise than masculine aesthetics and I'm sick and tired of being told I have to perform androgyny to be seen as valid in my identity. WE DO NOT OWE ANYBODY ANDROGYNY. We are allowed to have long hair and wear dresses or makeup or anything else traditionally feminine and we are still validly nonbinary, because while clothes CAN absolutely be an expression of gender, clothes =/= gender.
Enbies across the spectrum deserve to be represented, so to me, that representation on its own makes this entire reboot 100% worth it.

I have a friend and all we do is bond over our love of Gen 1 and share our opinions with one another about G3. Saw the new Abbey design and said "If you see it in stores first, could you get it for me?"
My biggest issue is the fact that collecting is, plainly, entirely inaccessible to collectors like me. I can't afford the overpriced reselling market to collect the dolls that I want, and the people that snatched up the dolls just to resell them at double or triple the price really make it hurt. I want to be engaged in the fandom, but collecting is incredibly difficult when I can't shell out hundreds of dollars per doll.
I mean, I'm also lucky that I still have my OG Gen 1 dolls from all those years ago (most of them, anyway... Some did not survive my younger self).

i’ve never really gotten into monster high, but as a character designer i have to say those new redesigns are AMAZING! they fit the characters and their personalities and stories so much. like frankie’s prosthetic or mismatched crazy clothes are definitely something a person would wear if they were just a few days old. it also accentuates their cheerful personality so much more than their original design (which imo was very pretty but did almost nothing in regards to their character). i 100% agree with you on the shoes, the high heels everybody wore always felt very character-less and bland to me, so giving them customized and diverse footwear rly brings out their individual styles! characters’ designs can tell so much about what kind of person they are, but unfortunately many creators undermine that or worse, sacrifice cool and unique design details/choices for the sake of fashion
