Persuasian is my favorite Austen novel. It's not most lighthearted Austen novel and Anne is not the spunky heroine but it's the most well-written. She did such an amazing job of a slow burn bleak romance novel where you don't actually know if they're going to forgive each other and are so happy with the ending.

A lot of what Austen writes about is taken from experiences she had in her life, for example she had a really wealthy brother who didn’t help Jane, her sister or mother for years after their father died, and they live in poverty for years because his wife didn’t want him to help them! A bit like sense and sensibility 😊

Pride and Prejudice is my all time favorite. The relationships and characters, the romance and the bromance! I think it's so funny. I laugh every time I read it. :) But to each their own, you are allowed to have your own opinion. I'm just so happy that you read them all and enjoyed them even if our rankings are different. My top is P&P, my second and third constantly change between Persuasion and Northanger Abbey, then Emma, Sense & Sensibility, and Mansfield Park. Although the first time I read Emma I gave it 3 stars, the second time I gave it 5. I think they just get better and better on rereads and I've only read S&S and Mansfield once.

I had a hard time reading Pride and Predjudice for the first time. I just couldnt keep the characters straight. After I watched the BBC mini series I was finally able to read and enjoy it. That naturally led to the others.
Persuasion is my comfort book. Sense and Sensibility is my second fave. Emma has grown on me. I've only read Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey once so I dont remember much about them. I think I'm due for a reread of those two.
Pride and Predjudice and zombies and Sense and sensibility and sea monsters are interesting reads if you aren't a purist when it comes to classics.

Jane Austen was everything in my teenager years!! I miss reading her books. I wanted to find some good biography of her life. She had a very tragic and "romanceable" life, she never married but she had an engagement when she was young that didn't end well... She died fairly young (in her 40's I think), in poverty. That's kind sad. I think her romances were popular before her death... anyway, I remember watching a movie slightly inspired by her life called Becoming Jane, with Anne Hathaway.

I think a lot of the adaptaions or reworkings of Pride and Prejudice really play down Elizabeth's pride/prejudice in the story, and I think they lose something for it. It's the growth and learning on both sides that really sells the love between them. But people seem to love pointing out all Darcy's flaws, but forgiving Elizabeth's without much thought, cheaping the whole story.

✨Sense and sensibility clashed with my personality so painfully that I couldn't enjoy it. The writing style is good but that much gossip and rotten social interactions was a real torture.
✨I think pride and prejudice is even better on a 2nd read. Because, you start to notice some relevant details and end up thinking that Mr Darcy is actually more socially awkward than prideful. Also, by the end of the story, there is more actual romantic interactions than just finalizing this contract of marriage.
✨Lady Susan is so scandalous 😂

  • @SarahAtHeart
    @SarahAtHeart 2 года назад +8

This was absolutely delightful! I'm so glad you enjoyed Northanger Abbey so much; it was definitely my favorite Austen growing up and it's so underrated. Also, I really recommend watching the film version of Lady Susan, called Love & Friendship. It is witty and is not in letter format, so you might like it more.
I believe that it is theorized that Jane Austen didn't finish The Watsons because her father died while she was writing it. I think she told someone how she wanted to finish the book though, so unlike Sanditon, the end of the story exists, at least in theory.

I think I've read Mansfield Park more than any other Jane Austen book! Even though Fanny isn't the kind if heroine I usually like or can relate to. But she's so well written and fleshed out in the story and I really love all the drama and scandal that takes place in Mansfield Park! I enjoy seeing her grow up from a child and also getting a glimpse of a lower class than usually shown in Jane Austen novels when she visits her family.

Persuasion is such a mature novel. I feel like some of her other heroines would have been ok if they hadn’t married, Elinor had Marianne to support her and agency in her home, Emma ran both her home and Highbury pretty much, Elizabeth is very good natured but determined so would have spent as much time with Jane as possible but Anne has no agency, her family are dreadful and she has no options to live a different life.

This ad was still as funny as the first time I watched it! I have never been so excited to watch one of your videos (which is saying a lot because I am always excited for your videos). I have way too much to say on these but you invited this... so. 😆❤
My order would have to be:
1st: Emma AND Pride & Prejudice
    2nd: Persuasion
    3rd: Sense and Sensibility
    (haven't read the others yet)
I don't know how to pick between Emma and P&P. They were both so hilarious, so angsty, and so fun! I thought they were not only great as classics, but of anything I've ever read. I kind of like the fact that Emma and Knightley weren't really meant to be shipped throughout the book and that's also why the age gap didn't bother me because he wasn't like, pining for her all this time - he came to realize the feelings later on. I also agree that Lizzie and Darcy are the best Austen couple! It helps that I have been obsessed with the movie (2005, obv) forever, too. I hope you watch the movie! The BBC miniseries is really good, too.
Persuasion was fine for me. I enjoyed the journey but I really wish there had been a bit more interaction between Anne and Wentworth, throughout. There could have been more drama and angst.
I am in such a minority here but I honestly didn't really like Sense and Sensibility. I actually did enjoy quite a lot of it but then the ending sort of brought it down for me. Elinor and Edward didn't do much for me because they weren't even interacting for very much of the book so... meh? And Marianna and Colonel Brandon... Ugh. First, this age gap did bother me a bit. But that's partially due to the fact that I didn't think they had chemistry. I actualy wish there had been more in the end that showed her changes because it just didn't totally convince me. Them getting together felt more like "Well, I almost died so I guess I'll mary you now". I wish Colonel Brandon and Elinor had ended up together, honestly. I really thought it was going to go that way and I was sad that it didn't.
Finally - I love your idea of doing a vlog based on the novels mentioned in Northanger Abbey! You're amazing, as always!

I love all of Jane Austen's works (I haven't yet read the unfinished novels tho) but I just tend to prefer her funnier novels (even tho there's humour in all of them of course). Really enjoyed this video and didn't even realise how long it was. I could've listened to you gush about these books for even longer :)

Yes! Please read the books mentioned in Northanger Abby, I wondered if they were real books when I read it. If they are worth the read I'll read them too.😄

The amount of English classics I did not read for my classes and still passed them is honestly astounding considering I minored in English literature😄
Haven't read a single Jane Austen book yet, but you did convince me to give it a try)

It really sounds like your enjoyment of Pride and Prejudice was hampered by the reputation of Darcy the character and the Lizzy/Darcy ship, especially for the first half of the novel. I watched the 1995 tv show at age 12 with my parents and my 10-year old brother, and we were all hooked from the first episode. My parents had read the novel, but my brother and I were going in completely blind, never having read or watched any period drama. I guess enjoying the humor and being blissfully ignorant of the romance to come was much better than going in expecting a romance for the ages! 😄

Yes to everything you said about Northanger Abbey! I read it for the first time two years ago and absolutely loved the characters, the romance, and the dramatic plot commenting on the gothic genre. I know for most people it’s their least favorite, but I think it is a truly brilliant and engaging novel.

Listening to you describe the plot of Sense and Sensibility made me really miss Alan Rickman some more... never read the book, only watched the 1996 adaptation.

I’m fairly new to your channel and let me tell you, the way I nearly screamed when I saw this video!!! AH! I started reading Jane Austen’s books when I was 13. Since then, I’ve read every one of her novels and I’ve seen every adaptation. If I could time travel, I would do so purely to meet Jane Austen and revel in her incredible wit. She was such a brilliant author! I could go on for ages about her and her books, but I’ll just get to my rankings:
    1. Northanger Abbey (I’m honestly surprised you didn’t mention the way too relatable 2 1/2 page rant she goes on about sexism concerning novels. It’s iconic to me lol)
    2. Emma
    3. Pride and Prejudice (the adaptation with Kiera Knightly is SO good btw)
    4. Persuasion
    5. Sense and Sensibility
    6. Mansfield Park
    7. Lady Susan

I love all of the imput and time you gave to each noveI can only imagine how hard it was to edit it. So i want to say thank you so much for that. Also if it's not much to request, I'd also love for you to go in depth with northanger abbey and the Gothic novels covered there and their similarities and ties analysis when you can! Especially with your expertise in gothic novels it would be very enlightening 💜

I enjoyed this video so much. Your passion for gothic literature is great would definitely be into more gothic literature reading vlogs.
    My personal Austen rankings.
    1. Pride and Prejudice
    2. Persuasion
    3. Northanger Abbey
    4. Emma
But honestly I enjoy them all a lot - Emma is still a four star read. I like the S&S movie adaptation but uh have DNfed the book. I might go back one day! And I’m not sure I am interested enough to read Mansfield Park, but maybe.
