Cooper Stuff Ep. 177 - Why Christianity Today is Wrong About Oliver Anthony

  • Oliver Anthony’s viral hit “Rich Men North of Richmond” has become an unquestionable culture moment. Some have even gone further, calling it a right wing “culture war” song. Christianity Today published an article claiming that the song “doesn’t love its neighbors”- a point that I roundly disagree with. Today, I explain what I believe the song is about, and why, In my view, Christianity Today has not only missed the entire point of the song, but they are revealing yet again that they believe the true evil in society isn’t coming from the atheistic, secular, sexual, and socialistic revolution. Oh no! The true destruction of society that must be called out is anything that promotes traditional Christianity or conservative ideas.

I had a time in my life (my rebellion phase, in college, of course) where I found myself single and pregnant. I had to go on welfare. I did not stay there. I went back to college, finished my degree in Music Education-Voice BTW. This was all made possible by grants, work study positions, and welfare. My tuition was paid, my books were paid; I had food stamps, health care, and cash for my rent and utilities. Was it enough? NO! I had to get roommates, share food, etc. It was really hard work. I remember many times pushing a stroller uphill loaded down with baby, baby things, groceries, laundry...ugh. But we made it. After graduation, I did not seek a job for fast big money. I chose to look for a job that offered benefits and a pension. I found a great job where I flourished. I was able to live a simple, comfortable life. Was it hard? Absolutely, especially when daughter #2 came along. Ten years later, I found myself back at the altar and rededicating my life to Jesus. Through it all, I began to see God's hand in my life path. Fast forward 30 years, I am now retired, teaching Children's Church, and serving my church family any way I can, saying yes and amen always. I am thankful that welfare was there for me, and I have repaid that money many times over through my taxes, making it possible for other single mothers to choose the same path. I agree 100% with John's comments. Welfare is a place to be for a season, if needed, but it is NOT a place to live. And yes, government, get out of my business.

Your story is very inspiring and I so admire your hard work. May I offer one caveat? It sounds as if, as a college student, you weren't a believer in Christ. If you were, the right choice would have been to turn toward God's people rather than government. That's what the Church is for. You would have received help--and much more--but it would have required change in your life. I'm guessing that you see that now. Blessings to you.

The line "Minors on an island somewhere" is a refence to the issue of human trafficking and the government response to it. Oliver Anthony's video "It's a pleasure to meet you" breaks down the song starting at the 4;20 mark. He says the song "touches base on human trafficking" and then expresses that even though he feels he stands in the center of the political aisle "one of the worst things a human being can do is take advantage of a child, and I can't begin to conceptualize what has to happen to someone in order for them to think that's okay. I think I drew the line on being quiet when I started to see that becoming normalized."
Keep fighting the good fight, John! Though I've only recently discovered your podcast, it has been hugely beneficial in my walk with the Lord! Thank you!

When I heard this line “I wish politicians would look out for miners and not just minors on an island somewhere” he is talking about miners who work in coal mines how we don’t look out for the coal miners that have lost there jobs and how the government doesn’t care about them or there families we are always taking care of other people instead of our own people yes we do need to talk about children and human sex trade but can’t we help someone closer to home you know the little guy as well as people who are in the sex trade. The one lyric that struck a nerve with me most was obese people buying junk food with their food stamps. I used to work as a grocery store cashier. I saw what people purchased with their food stamps. This verbiage about "people can't help it--they live in food deserts" is nonsense! They had access to healthier choices at the grocery store I worked at. No one was preventing them from it. They chose Twinkies and Cup Cakes instead

The part of the county he is from specifically has absolutely collapsed and it was primarily built around coal mines. The second part being the part you are saying it has to be about Epstein and child trafficking and such. It hits both. He may have stated he had a preference of the points he wanted to push forward but don’t discount the others just cause of it.

My parents probably should have taken advantage of some gov't resources for a time. We fell on hard financial times when I was in middle school and my grandmother sent grocery money for a few years. We had to use a lot of gas in rural Maine, a lot of oil for heating, and we got by with very little. They didn't even consider using any other support bc they are hardy New England stock and gritted their teeth and raised me well. I am so proud of anyone who needs to use those gov't resources for a time and then pull themselves out and choose to work towards success and dignity.

About the topic of the use/abuse of Welfare, I think what is meant (by you and Anthony’s lyrics) is probably summed up in that old saying, something like-> If you give a man a fish you feed him for a day, but if you teach them *how to fish* you feed him for a lifetime.
IMO, (all too often here in Canada 🍁) instead of people using welfare as the *’safety net’* it was designed as while they ‘learn how to fish’, so to speak, it’s being used, frankly, as a *permanent solution* to enable some people to be lazy, to not have to worry about work or learning new skills, whatever it takes to help get back on their feet. Welfare was meant to be a stepping stone to help people and families out *until* they are able to take care of themselves (and their families) - obviously unless they have a permanent disability etc.
And as many other comments say, the “island” and the “minors” referred to (vs miners) is Epstein Island and the pure evil that went on there.
Love the show!!🙏🏼 God bless and MARANATHA from Canada!🇨🇦

If my memory serves me, I remember back around 2000, a "christian" magazine launched called Relevant. The mag was billed as the "christian" Rolling Stone focused on art, music, cinema reviews, culture, etc. Right away it came off a progressive "christian " thing. The founder was the son of Christianity Today's president at the time (as I recall), so apparently the fruit didnt fall far from the tree. Its sad because it was a portent of things to come, not the Christianity, but American Evangelicalism.
In truth, there's 2 churches in the world, the visible church and the invisible church. The one that is visible is made up of everything from the unsaved, to nominals, to real believers. The invisible church is only made up of born again believers. Technically, they are both visible, and called the church by the world.
But even the true church, the end times church, is weak and ineffective because of leaven. That's why there aren't many truly prophetic voices, but rather there are people claiming to be that.
No wonder people grasping for truth have latched on to Oliver (Chris) Anthony. Like Dylan was over 50 years ago, Anthony is , today...a reluctant prophet.
Hey, God can speak through an ass (Balam's ass) if he has to.
While Chistiany Today has ceased to speak truth, God doesn't cease.
Who in ancient Israel responded well to thier prophets?
The false prophets said what the people wanted to hear, "all is well"
while God's men call out true injustice, AND sin.
Lets hope and pray Oliver (who is not a prophet) continues to walk with God in humility and keeps putting God 1st in his life, if he does, that will bear fruit. I dont put faith in man, so I'm hopeful, but realistic.

If your Church can afford to pay you great but many small Churches cant. How about your people know that you are having a hard time - be humble. In the old days the Congregation would rally around their Pastor and drop off groceries at their doorstep.

They were physically able to work so they did. They tried to better their situation. There are many that don’t. That’s their paycheck. They are perfectly able to work but they don’t because they don’t want to. That’s what he’s talking about.

John I couldn’t agree with u more-the confusion arises when progressives refuse to understand/accept common sense lyrics of this great song. We have a minority of the country-who consider themselves as educated elites who run media, academics, the uniparty (democrats and republicans),oligarchy businesses that made a fortune off of Covid-19 and being anti-Trump. This man wrote a song that goes against all of that and tries to reason with our common sense. Our country is over as the candle for all the world to see if we don’t return to the constitutional republic (not democracy) that our founders set us up to be! May u and your family be blessed for the great work you’re doing!

38:20 Although I don't think there is a way to necessarily determine a perfect wage for a pastor. I believe it to be shameful that a congregation allowed their spiritual leader to essentially go hungry. This goes against the command laid out to us in I Corinthians where Paul talks about muzzling the ox that treds out the wheat.

They are so far off. I was hoping you were going to speak on this and have been waiting. I work in a business that gives me a large sampling of the welfare community. There are some that fall into the condition she describes but the prevailing attitude is entitlement. We're talking scores of able-bodied people who are content to eat from the government's hand. They have no desire to work. They do well enough to carry iPhone and androids and name brand clothing so they're not exactly struggling. They expect everything to be free which the government loves because they want to be our providers and saviors rather than God Almighty.
Things have changed and to use an outlier scenario to shame him while ignoring the rest of the truth in what he said either isn't good analysis or reveals an ulterior or more subversive motive. I read the lyrics on Matthew Blake (aka Flamy Grant) and they are vulgar, perverse, heretical, deluded, and blasphemous but they had NOTHING to say. He used some harsh language but is genuine and it seems the Lord is working on him. Obviously we have compassion, but we are at a point where people are so fast asleep they need to be shaken.

Speaking of this article, doesn’t the author know that some churches can’t afford to pay the pastor a living wage? Did the church her husband pastored not tell them that before he accepted the position? That’s normally disclosed ahead of time. There are many pastors who are bi-vocational for that reason.

Oliver Anthony actually explained both lyrics and both are about discord and a broken system. The miners/ and minors on an island is about what any one with a brain understands. OA idolizes his grandfather who was coal miner in Appalachia and he was abhorred that anyone could have the mentality to sexually abuse a child; IOW the lyric is supposed to be biting sarcasm about politicians ignoring the welfare of the working class while involving themselves in, protecting, or ignoring child trafficking because it is an inconvenient consequence of their political worldview. It astounds me the simply mentioning Jeffery Epstein, caused the liberal press to scream right wing conspiracy theory, even after his wife Ghislaine Maxwell was given a 20-year sentence for luring and grooming teenage girls to be sexually abused and exploited by Epstein
If you include the preceding lyric of the obese lyric, "There are folks on the street that have nothing to eat and the obese milking welfare". IOW, its about the disconnect between people who have fallen through the safety net and those that abuse it. More specifically the idea for the second half of the lyric came from an article OA read which said 30% of food stamps are used to buy junk food while there is an epidemic of obesity; it wasn't about obese people, it was about a broken system that allows people to both starve and eat themselves to death.

What's a fair wage for a pastor? I wouldn't dare to set a number, not least because it's going to vary widely from one part of the country to another, but it should be sufficient for him to support his family, with a reasonable degree of comfort, as the sole wage-earner. The pay should be commensurate with the education they expect him to have, which in most churches would be a graduate degree. He shouldn't be living in the lap of luxury (I'm looking at you, Kenneth Copeland), but if his family is properly on public assistance, the church is failing its pastor.
If the church isn't able to do that, it needs to be clear that it's seeking a bivocational pastor. And it also needs to clearly understand and accept that a bivocational pastor just isn't going to have the time or energy to devote to the ministry that a univocational pastor will.

    God and Caesar
15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to trap Him by what He said.[a] 16 They sent their disciples to Him, with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that You are truthful and teach truthfully the way of God. You defer to no one, for You don’t show partiality.[b] 17 Tell us, therefore, what You think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
18 But perceiving their malice, Jesus said, “Why are you testing Me, hypocrites? 19 Show Me the coin used for the tax.” So they brought Him a denarius. 20 “Whose image and inscription is this?” He asked them.
21 “Caesar’s,” they said to Him.
Then He said to them, “Therefore give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 22 When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left Him and went away.

America wasn't founded by Caesars and we won't willingly live under one. Thankfully the people who did found the country made sure that Romans 13 couldn't be used by tyrants to enslave and abuse the population under the false auspice of "divine right". Plus, our taxes don't go to the US government. They go to the European oligarchs that were allowed to mint our money with illusory debt attached to it starting in 1913. We have the right to stop using their currency and go back to being a nation that mints its own currency without income tax. You're welcome. Thankfully I have a knowledge of history as well as theology. You can keep tap dancing for a Caesar if you want to though, lol.

According to Chris, (Oliver Anthony), upwards if 60 to 70%of purchases on Snap, ebt, etc is Soda pop, candy,,and junk food. You see these people in Walmart sitting on the handicap scooter with both butt cheeks dragging the ground, and their basket overflowing with twinkies and ho hos, and oreos, and coke. And they usually are griping about not having a big enough ebt deposit. If you ask them what they do for a living, they say they make more sitting home watching the view vs going to work.
