Great video. Was going to get one until I found out the price. Got a Hilleberg Soulo. Yes more expensive but you know that will survive anything and last for decades. I see this a 3+ season tent.

Ive got the Terra Nova Comapct Laser 2 and I'm just not getting on with it. Have almost pressed the button for the Southern Cross 1 and just assumed it was 90-95cm high, I'm absolutely staggered to hear it is only 84cm! That's scuppered my new tent plan! 84cm is just ridiculous. Love your channel btw, Andy.

  • @grahamrowe6278

Andy. For the 2023 they should have arched it up to 92-95cm interior. It would likely creep over the 4lb mark... but it is a 4 season tent!

I have the 2022 version of the southern cross 1 and I’m 6’1 and I’ve got a solid 20cm of headroom if my feet are flat against the wall. Personally I have no issues with it apart from its price tag and the fact that if I’ve got the poles in tightest loop then it means if I’m not being careful I get a face full of pole when it pings out

@@davt8615absolutely would recommend. I’ve had mine in some absolutely stupid weather in wales and it was a bit of a sleepless night but I never had any doubts about it holding up. My only downside after using it for a while is that it’s pretty bad for condensation but that’s understandable for a 4 season tent

Does anyone else wish that Terra Nova didn't make that massive red pole? For stealth camping that's like a red rag to a bull for a farmer or private land owner! If like me you have to walk through some woodlands or say the wolds to get up to the Dales during the winter months this is quite a turn off. It's got a really low profile so would be a great woodland tent were it not for that flashy red pole! There's also times when I need to leave my tent and go collect water or provision, I don't want to be robbed, I want a solo 4 season tent that is robust, can handle a blizzard on the moors but also stealth and not to flashy looking. Is red a stronger colour or something? 😅

How big difference in terms of toughness is it between this and the Terra Nova Laser Compact AS?
Weight seems to be similar, but I like that the Laser Compact AS would fit horisontally in my backpack.

    • @BackpackingUK
      @BackpackingUK  Год назад +2

For me, I think the Compact AS guys out better. To get the best out of it you’d need a good place to pitch and ground conditions for the pegs.

Hi Andy, just a little update.
TerraNova are currently selling this at £490, unfortunately your code won't apply because its already discounted.
That said, your code is still good, because I bought the sc1 and its footprint last night, and i got your discount on the footprint. 21/6/2024.
Incidentally, i bought the footprint because this is the most expensive tent ive ever bought and I'll do ANYTHING to take care of it.😅

Why buy a nice car when a £1k runaround will do etc etc. In my experience you get what you pay for and if you spend £200 you'll get a decent tent but if you spend £500 you'll get a much better one.....lighter, stronger and longer lasting.

Hi there, looking for a 1-person 4 season solo tent. I'm doing mostly alpine hikes in the alps, so weight and strength are my two key factors that I look for. From your experience, do you have any recommendations? I am also leaning towards free standing, which is personally just a nice feature to have with a tent. This tent is pretty great especially the weight, but I am 6'2, so perhaps a bit small since you've mentioned it in your video.

    • @BackpackingUK

I'm the same height as him Dan, and the interior height is my only issue. How can they make the Lasers higher for pretty much the same purpose? If that's a good height for a tent that does that job, then it doesn't ever need to be less. It's why the Starlight is off my list as well.@@danieldring88

I have one, only used it 5 times. Sent it back as it needed new pullouts, repair was untidy with all loose threads left where they had picked the old stitching out. Went back out after the repair and it's now leaking where the inner clips to the outer fly.. Seam tape cracked in various locations. Baggy inner tent which flaps around all over. Really poor quality for a tent with this price tag. Hilleberg are light years ahead imho.

Yes they are a little heavier and not the tents I use often these days but in comparison to what they cost against the southern cross the build quality and durability is better imho.
