You are exactly right, I went back and looked at it and I must have changed the example to 175 after I had done the math. You are correct, in the equation it should be the patient’s measured sodium, in this case 175 not 162. Thank you!
I started have muscle twitching in my left pec and I twitching all over but it mostly happens when I’m relaxed … I think it was brought about by dehydration and too much caffeine.
Yes sir! It was a wonderful video. Thank you very much for posting. I am an M4 applying for surgical residency this cycle, and the material on your website has been fantastic.
Dapo Akinmoladun totally awesome! Good luck, glad I’m putting together some helpful Content. Building week by week :) let me Know if there is something that would be helpful!
I've been experiencing muscle spasms when drifting off to sleep (hypnagogic jerks) after I did a 5 day fast 3 months ago. They really disrupt my sleep, but come and go intermittently. I'm convinced this is due to an electolyte imbalance caused by the fast (I was taking magnesium and sodium while fasting). Would you suggest I am low in phosphorus? How long do you think it will take my body to rebalance naturally? Would you recommend supplements or just dietary changes? Thanks!
John, I apologize for the delayed reply. First I would say that you can definitely get some electrolyte disturbances when fasting, especially if that's combined with heavy exercise and supplementation. A healthy body will definitely rebalance quickly but I would tread lightly with fasting and seek out your family practice doc prior to the next fast. Maybe get an electrolyte panel to see where you're at? Hypnagogic jerks, or sleep starts, can be normal as well. Good luck! I do intermittent fasting as well, just finishing up an 18h fast right now!
@@citizensurgeon Thanks! A dietitian friend reckoned I had too much sodium and too little water during the fast. So I've been drinking a lot of water since and the jerks have now ceased. Phew!
I have very dry skin and gets rashy easily even after applying lots of moisturizer or oil. What should I do .i also feel very thirsty at nights. Please help sir
Adarsh, I’m sorry to hear about the suffering you have with your skin, I have two daughter that struggle with eczema. My recommendation is to see your dermatologist and possible an allergist/immunologist who can set you on the right path, avoid triggers, get you treatment, etc. good luck!
@@citizensurgeon thanks doctor for being so humble and replying. It's not eczema but just totally oil free and feels kinda tight sometimes. I was wondering if my tap water is the reason
I have been experiencing pain in the back of both my thighs. I have tried magnesium, potassium. I have a heart condition and my Dr. prescribed a diaretic. I am forever running to bathroom, can’t sleep because of pain. This has been going on for months. Not getting satisfaction from my Dr. I am 93 yrs old. Help please someone. Thank You
I’m sorry Irene, pain that keeps you up at night is destructive to all aspects of life. I would certainly recommend taking your concerns to your physician, unfortunately on a platform like this giving any medical advice would be dangerous. I hope you find an answer to your struggles!
Hi doc, NEED HELP HERE ASAP PLS, the docs of my third world country are literally neglecting and lack knowledge critically, my symptoms are arythmia and skipped beats that kept worsening in the last days, noticing a gradual dehydration looking at my body fluids, starting to have headaches as of today, and had one day last week where i was so dead sleepy i was literally glued me to the bed, only happened the day after i had taken a high amount of salt, i did intermittent fasting for 40days with 1 meal a day and went into starvation without being aware, started taking 500mgx2 magnesium/day and drinking water with a pinch of salt in it while consuming a lot of lettuce, what do i do next? Docs sent me back home after hearing my arythmia telling me arythmias are normal.
Dang, this can be complicated and I apologize for the delayed reply, definitely follow up with your physician. Extreme dieting can really make your electrolytes and metabolites go nuts, always proceed under a doc or nutritionist’s supervision so you don’t get in trouble!
@@ravneetkaur1115 Ask for electrolyte blood test, Raise your calory intake above 2000/day, take 1g of magnesium & 1 teaspoon of socium per day and eat lots of carbs, potatoes precisely, at least 400g/day, you'll start feeling very thirsty, drink lots of water once that happens and not before you start feeling the thirst, avoid caffeine, running, sports and effort until that happens.
Thanks! I’m a dietitian studying for my advanced practice certification renewal in nutrition support. Your vids are helpful for review . 🎉
Awesome Angie! Good luck on the exams!
@12:14 where did we arrive 162 from when the Na of the patient was 175

Great resource.. Thx❤️
Thanks so much YuiYui! Have an awesome day!
I am confused on how you came about correcting the sodium with 0.2 NS at 168 ml/h at time 12:12
I feel like my half body left side is tingling numbness..i thik im gonna have stroke..i cant sleep and my heart is pounding..
I’m confused with the calculation at 8:19 so where’s 154 coming from?
I started have muscle twitching in my left pec and I twitching all over but it mostly happens when I’m relaxed … I think it was brought about by dehydration and too much caffeine.
7:30 why didn’t you add the TBW in your calculation for safe Na deficit?
Wun! I'm sorry for the delay...0.60 is the TBW...sorry about the confusion.
Excellent Dr. excellent!
Thanks so much for the feedback! Please let me know if there is a topic you would like covered!
How do i find doctors this smart?
Haha, just average in smartness, but high scorer on work ethic :)
I am a little confused at 7:56. 3% NS has 513 mEq of Na not 462 mEq.
Dapo Akinmoladun you are absolutely right! That’s embarrassing, thank you for pointing that out. Does the process still make sense?
