  • VarAC is a digital mode that uses the VARA HF virtual Terminal Node Controller (TNC). Because of this team-up, we finally have a ragchew mode that uses the same advanced techniques for communications that ensure your QSOs are sent and received, even with very weak signals, with 100 percent fidelity.
Here are the web-sites used to download the free software for this mode:

Thanks for this video. I've just learned of VARA's existence today and stumbled across your video while researching it. See you on the air. 73 de SP9AB

Very good. Nice not to have a automated system. So far in one year , only worked 3 people. It's all Beacons. Had 3 enjoyable chats. So far.

There’s another digi-mode that you might want to try out as well. It’s called JS8call and uses the FT8 waveform. Do a RUclips search for it and my video on it should pop right up…

Very nice video, now I know much more about VarAC which another ham just recommended to me today. I am familiar with WinLink having used it to communicate from my boat in the past - but had to use the very expensive and proprietary modem. Always wondered if a similar error checking mode could be available via PC and inexpensive sound card!

I'm an experimenter, not much of a rag-chewer at all, but I have no use for automated QSO's. Why bother? If I make a QSO, it's me making it, all of it. Lately, ham QSO's are getting a lot like sending out a robot boat to go fishing instead of going yourself, and just staying home, then claiming you caught whatever the boat did simply because you own it. But as far as I'm concerned, you missed a day of fishing, and some robot caught a fish. We live in strange times, interesting times, but strange. More people need to think about what they're doing, and why.

Yes, but not sure of the specific settings for the 718, though. I’ll do some research and see if I can find some guidance to help you out.

Not automated. That's the whole point. Not enough using it. Rebound me off the days of Amtor where I had many good long chats. I built the Amtor modem used on a creed telex machine before the computer days. More enjoyable then as I use to build all gear and experiment plus discuss over the air. Today we have new generations on air without any knowledge at all. I had the know how to get the license. VarAC a nice mode but FT8 still dominates as most hams now won't talk. What do you talk about some say. I give up .
