    The book provides clear illustrations ruclips.net/user/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO diagrams that cover many of the essential topics. The projects at the end of the book are valuable for enhancing your skills and creating your own furniture. A digital platform linked to the book that could offer the plans for other woodworking projects with the cut sheets would have been a nice addition, but overall, the book is excellent.

    It's still cider whether it's alcoholic or not. Or at least that's how is referred to in the US usually. If it's unfiltered and you haven't added sugar, it's cider. Otherwise it's apple juice if you filter it and add sugar.

    • @cmaterick
      @cmaterick 7 месяцев назад +23

      I’m not sure adding sugar is even required. You can buy 100% apple juice that is unsweetened. Seems like it’s just the filtering that triggers the name change at least in the middle of the US.

    • @JohnClark-tt2bl
      @JohnClark-tt2bl 7 месяцев назад +10

      @@cmaterick Yeah that's true actually. On top of that, commercially made hard cider is filtered to basically be alcoholic apple juice.

    • @Kolnerbigblue

      There is a difference between Apple Cider and Hard Apple Cider. One is non-alcoholic (you can serve it to kids) and the other is alcoholic (would you really serve this to kids?). Some people have alcohol on their minds.

    • @JohnClark-tt2bl
      @JohnClark-tt2bl 7 месяцев назад +7

      Traditionally speaking though, cider used to mean an alcoholic drink. Cider actually predates beer in the US, as apples were easier to find for early settlers than grains were. These days we call it hard cider to distinguish between alcoholic or non.

      I agree, I live in western New York and you can buy apple cider in the store. It’s non alcoholic, hard cider has alcohol and then there is apple juice. So I believe it has to do with the filtration of the squeezed/crushed apples.

  • @j.c.linden
    @j.c.linden 7 месяцев назад +3

    Apple cider is most definitely NOT alcoholic. Hard cider is, but cider mills and stores sell cider all the time that is simply unfiltered apple pressings. It is a family type drink. Add some spices and heat it for mulled cider, still a family child friendly fall beverage. Freshly pressed cider has a shelf life. Making it into vinegar or some alcoholic drink are also possibilities that start by using freshly pressed non alcoholic cider.

    Apple cider is fresh, unfiltered, and often unpasteurized. It's also considered a seasonal drink and can be hard to find outside of the autumn months. Apple juice, on the other hand, is filtered and pasteurized, which gives it a longer shelf life, a sweeter taste, and a smoother texture. Apple cider if left to sit too long will ferment ..

    • @Dstinct
      @Dstinct 7 месяцев назад +4

      Yup. Here in Canada, adding alcohol would make it "hard cider".

    • @LiqdPT
      @LiqdPT 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@DstinctI mean, you don't "add alcohol" (like, hard cider isn't apple juice with vodka added). You let the unfiltered apple juice (aka cider) sit and ferment like wine or beer. It produces its own alcohol.

    So, just to be clear to everyone who said that it wasn't cider.
    Apple juice is filtered and sugar is normally added (what you see on your store shelves). Apple cider is just the juice of freshly pressed apples.
    I live in upstate NY where we have the Largest McIntosh Apple Orchard in the World, we have a lot of cider orchards here.
    What you made, it's cider.

      Its just people that have to comment if something doesn't match exactly what they think it should be. I agree, where I come from (midwest) this would be called cider even though it has no alcohol. We would call it hard cider if it had alcohol. But I don't have some pathological need to correct someone for using a different arbitrary naming scheme like the original commenters. Everyone should just call it what they are used to and then spend the minimal cognitive load required to translate the terms in their head if it doesn't match what they are used to hearing it called.

      @paulgrassart8935 7 месяцев назад +22

      He said it in a previous video : the tree house has been sent to the tree refurbishing company so they can put plumbing and wiring. Yes, I know, it is a tree-less treehouse, but it still went to the tree company, because there are no tree-less refurbishing company, that would be nonsense.
      So, in the meantime, we can see the first part of boat-building, until he has to send the boat to the shipyard (that's the name of boat-refurbishing companies) so they can put plumbing and wiring in it. But we will get many videos until then : in this boat, everything is round, everything must be scribed, it will be hard work.
      So no worries, we have great videos coming. If only he could put some jokes in them, and not be always so serious about everything, they would be the best !

    The patreon builds are the best thing in RUclips woodworking community. A lot of makers would never have agreed to work in that small shop in London and Jason not only did you do it but also built a massive bed putting to rest any excuses of “my shop is not big enough for that.” I have been a fan for a long time but I have the utmost respect for that. Your ability to interact with people is excellent and the woodworking in other peoples’ shops should be a TV show because those videos are that good and would be a unique twist on a typical home renovation show that focuses on woodworking.

    Apple cider is made from whole apples that are ground into a pulp and then pressed to release the juices. This type of beverage has a strong, tart flavor and often contains sediment from the apple pulp.
    Apple juice, on the other hand, is made from pre-pressed fruit juice that has been processed and filtered before being bottled up for sale in stores. It usually has a sweeter taste than cider due to added sugar or sweeteners for you apple cider snobs. Hard cider is what you guys are talking about.

    Just want to add that you made cider in your other video because it is fresh and unfiltered.
    In the US, Cider is the fresh, unfiltered, and non-alcoholic liquid that comes from pressing/crushing apples, usually found in the fall. Apple Juice would be the same liquid that is filtered, pasteurized, and sweetened. What you are making now, and what everyone else was complaining about, is HARD CIDER; This may not be the same as in other parts of the world, but in North America there is a legal distinction between cider and hard cider.

    Before you finalize your new shop design, if you have sufficient headroom, consider installing a false floor. If I had sufficient headroom, I would start with say 18" I-Beams on 16" centers. I would run my dust collection, wiring, and compressed air under the floor. I would then use two layers of plywood for the floor. The benefit is that you would not have to walk on concrete all day.
    Improvements can be made to items like the air piping and dust collection ducting. I would look at using a ring main. This would provide for an even distribution. It also provides for easier bypass should a piece of equipment be out of service, removed, or replaced. A better material for vacuum ducting might be conducting Bonstrand piping. It will be quite a bit more expensive, but it will be stronger, and in the long run easier to maintain. Bondstrand conducting piping has been in use for around 50 years. If you put in a compressed air system consider a rotary screw air compressor with a refrigerated filter, such as those offered by Kaeser Compressor. One of the most important benefits is the absence of noise.
    Over the years I visited hundreds of shops and manufacturing facilities. The Renk AG Gear facility in Augsburg, Germany had the only floor that I can remember. Renk's floor consisted of pieces of hardwood, I think oak, about 6"x6"x4" thick, with the end grain up. It looked like crosscut slices of railroad ties. You could drop tools and not worry about destroying them.
    Good luck with your new shop.

    What you made with the press was indeed cider. Apple juice is cider purified with all the sediment and apple pieces removed. HARD cider is cider after it has been fermented, which appears to be what you are getting ready to do. Just make sure you check the regulations on how much you can make for PERSONAL use. Good luck, I hope it comes out good.

    Jason, I searched all of RUclips and couldn’t find one good video on the sanding process. I know sanding is one of your least favorite things to do, but ALL woodworking videos literally skip through that process when it’s so important. I have so many questions about sanding. Such as in between grits, do you wet the wood with water to raise the fibers, and if so, do you wait until it’s dry? What is the highest grit that you sand to? Do you hand sand at the last grit that you use? In between grits do use air or cheese paper to clean the surface. And even when finishing, I have questions on how you sand in between coats. If you could do a video on that I’d greatly appreciate it.

    I was confused by the comments about Apple Cider. By definition, Apple Cider is fresh, unfiltered and often unpasturized. Hard cider has alcohol. Apple juice is filtered and pasturized. Maybe it's a regional thing? Here in the US (Wisconsin) you get apple cider in autumn and it does not contain alcohol. I am curious if that's a southers thing of something else like that.

But the fragment you shared with us in the video, even though it's weird for me because of the latin-american accent, it's so masterfully dubbed I loved it.

    It is a sad thing that french is not a priority, because a lot of my quebecers, french-canadian colleagues would enjoy your videos... but selfishly, I do understand you very well, so I will continue to really like your videos, seeing your foreman grow and everything... Thanks!

    It’s still cider… us and UK are just different.. Apple juice is the filtered yellow refined juice.. when you press the apple like he did in the other video it’s cider.. does not have to be alcoholic.. that’s what we call hard cider..

    Ok Jason, you finally got me. I am a home brewer that owns a supply store just outside of nashville. I have been watching your videos from the very beginning. This video has me signing up for patron to meet you when you come to nashville to thank you for everything you have taught me. I would like to return the favor by helping you learn about brewing.

    I cant believe how much space you people have down there, here in the netherlands its a luxery to have a car garage at all, let alone a driveway. Having land and such costs you a fortune and building something on it even more so, and some headache with the local municipality. Wish i could move there some day haha

    Thank you for the updates and I am excited for your new shop and to watch that process. So we always called the pressed unfiltered apples Apple Cider, filtered was called Juice, and the fermented was called Apple Jack. But what do I know.
