This was still is one of my all time favourite records,It was one of the first Tamla Motown hits,I heard it through my oldest sister, I bought on uk double album 40 jukebox hits,then I bought it at floods second hand shop Smithfield market Belfast for 15pence along with Billy Blands ,let the little girl dance,30pence for both,47 years ago and I still play them 😂 Thanks for posting ❤

wow i've never heard of him before, he was great, i'm always so proud to see my brothers and sisters from those days, yo they be some good looking people, we don't got nothing on them, makes me realize everyone has their time to be young and good looking, wish i could have seen them.
Recall the Dave Clark 5 did this too, but couldn't touch MARV!
of course the Sat. night bandstand kids clapping on the 1 and 3 instead of the backbeat 2 and 4. Great song wore it out as a kid

Berry Gordy was involved in the writing of this track and from the profits of this hit he set up his own Record label/Studio called Tamla Motown in Detroit. The rest, as they say is history.
He already set it up of what became known as Motown Record Corporation in 1959 through a $800 loan.
Bobby Parker wrote and release the song in 1956.
Parker says Gordy "stole" the song from him.
@BrianHassett-ih3jp I just listened to the original and this version is much more polished with some of the lyrics changed. This is one of my favorites. But the melody is identical and there should be no question as to who should be credited with writing it.
So true or false? Berry Gordy stole this song from Bobby Parker who had already first recorded it on Vee-Jay Records. Gordy put his name on the Marv Johnson recording as writer. True or false...and why don't more people know about this if it's true? Did Parker or his estate ever get back-royalties??

Marv Johnson's biggest hit You Got What It Takes was not written by Berry Gordy! It was actually written and recorded by a blues guitarist named Bobby Parker in 1957! Bobby's biggest hit came in 1961 with a song called Watch Your Step! His name gets confused with Robert Parker who had a monster hit called Barefootin in 1966!

Robert Velez * Thanks for the information I never knew that Bobby wrote the song. IAM a bass guitar player and had the opportunity of backing Marve Johnson live when I was 17. I also knew Bobby Parker who passed away around 2014.
I toured and played harmonica with Bobby Parker for 15 years thank you for sharing this, a lot of Bobby’s work was taken from him, he truly deserves to be in the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame.
Bobby Parker may have the rights to the song but his musical rendition of the song was not a hit until Gordy got involved. So it's 6 of one and a half a dozen of the other.
