- Mr. Bernard "Pretty" Purdie took time after a clinic to give some extra education to the young talented danish drummer Daniel Sørensen 11 years old.
As a retired surgeon, specialising in micro-surgery of the skull-base and ear, I can relate to all the ergonomics of posture and wrist control advocated by Bernard Purdie in this drumming lesson. Once you have achieved the relaxed balanced posture then everything else falls easily into place with practice. Masterful.

Thank you. The sound and feel of the surgical instruments, especially the high speed drill, are also key to carrying out complex procedures safely.

The best way to describe it would be relaxed total attentiveness for the task in hand. Drumming, like surgery is a multi-dimensional sensori-motor flow state. I'm not remotely musical 😂
I could really use your help and advice. I have had tinnitus since 93 but had to quit drumming in 97 due to hyperacusis. I have spent my whole adult life trying to cure my Sound Sensitivity.. there is an ear surgery at the Silverstein Institute but the results are hit or miss. It is my dream to cure my hyperacusis not just so I can play drums again but so I can live a more fulfilling life. When it's really bad I can barely take people laughing and I'm a pretty funny person!

Not speedlight-chops, not flamboyant kits, not circus playing. The seeds to be a lifetime learner; you can hear the difference in HOW sounds what's this amazing student achieved by applying Mr.Purdie suggestions. That's what I like to call Master Class.

It doesn't matter what, it's all about the feel, you can play the notes correctly but it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing, so he is a good teacher and a nice student

The kid is wearing a Genesis Duke t shirt. That's a good example of a drummer (Phil Collins) who's playing posture was hunched over, and now poor Phil is paying the price. It's a good lesson to learn for sure. To be taught by Mr. Purdy is quite the gift!

I'm from Finland and Bernard is from the US and of course I know there's a plethora of cultures there. But I met BB King once and I think they are so similar. Humble but determined.

I was to get instruction from a world class jazz drummer. I asked him if he ever played or soloed with the snare off. You'd think I asked him to go on stage naked. No sale.
As much as I like that Purdie wants to teach this boy, the world that Purdie learned in is so much more different than this kids world. Unless he's on him every day for like the next 2 years lol, the kid will only remember this through the RUclips video clip.

there are certain ppl on this planet that when they start talking about their expertise, the only thing to do is be quiet and listen to every single word. It may not sink in right away, but eventually if your lucky it will. This kid is in essence being coached by a living breathing history book; future generations of drummers will only read about Bernard Purdie.

I started to use both sticks like the kid in the last part when i saw vinnie appice, i like to play heavy but also fast so i noticed that this way you can add volume and its easier to do fast rolls without tensing the body and using to much power to get the sound, only by using the weight of the sticks
I think letting gravity do the work for you is the secret to doing a lot of things. Let the knife cut the butter, as it were.
