    The whole point of sea shanties (and folk in general) is the feeling of being together and keeping spirits up. It makes perfect sense that people would turn to them during current times.

      Exactly..... I was in the Navy from 94 to 98, we used sea chanties for cadence in Bootcamp when marching and when we had menial tasks to do we had a senior chief that would break out into song on some of these. I remember hearing this one and what would you do with a drunken sailor allot....lol

      It s a working song. There’s also factory shanties, and land-work shanties and mining shanties etc etc. From before there was mass entertainment.

      watched some video, he has a lot of subs but im unsure who he was, but he said that this song isnt a sea shanty an amazing song! But not anything like a traditional sea shanty since they are songs to get you to work with a call and return style. Still love this :)

      I absolutely go weak at the knees for a Scottish accent. I remember many many years ago when I had my very first classmate who had a Scottish accent - I was SOOOOO excited I went home and told my mum abt tht boy. And she is still shocked today when I remind her abt it.

      I've been to Ireland and if Scotland is similar the people LOVE to sing and tell stories. I find the Scottish accent more difficult to understand than Irish and British but I agree with others that his voice is very soothing.

      Yes, it's a shame the record was turned into a dance track. The really special thing about it is the rawness of his unaccompanied voice. That's the music industry for you....spoil every natural talent and turn it into something electronic sounding.

      @@1pureboy1 that's not true at all. I'm a Scot living in the South of England. I have a mild accent due to the fact I have lived outside of Scotland for many years and sometimes people struggle to understand me. They would definitely find Nathan's accent difficult to understand.

      There's something primal about hearing the raw singing voice. Unfortunately, most people don't get to hear it very often. That's what makes this young man so appealing to so many. Sadly, his record company has done the usual with it: turned it into a dance track.

    Absolutely fantastic, I'm in England, but have Scottish ancestry. I don't know how people can't understand what he's saying, when he sings, to me it almost sounds Irish. From my part of the country sea shanties are still sung in the country pubs by the sea. Well done Nathan, I wish you a very happy, long and successful career!

    Absolutely love Nathan's version and proud to say this is a New Zealand sea shanty. It's about ships owned by the Weller brothers whose boats supplied the whaling stations around Aotearoa.

      Well the concept of viral didn't exist.
      First, there was no internet (duh), but more subtly, there was no concept of a "virus". These things, and their role in spreading disease, hadn't been discovered yet.
      Also, this song was probably never 'written', per se. It was more likely developed as an oral tradition, and embellished over time as it was shared from crew to crew. Then one day someone wrote it down.

    Anyone that ever grew up in NE Canada will tell you we know our sea shanties...I've heard this one a lot. His version stopped me in my tracks and to the horror of my co-workers here in Africa had me singing this with him. Keep it going...I'd love to hear more from him.

    Sea shanties have been apart of the Atlantic Canada forever with local singers. This is great that the rest of world love it as much as us maritimers. Can’t wait to hear more from Nathan and the rest of the world joining in.

    You catch that Scottish accent as he's singing but when you hear him speaking it's thick enough to cut with a knife and I have to wonder if he has as hard a time listening to his American interviewers as we do him. Our differences is what keeps life interesting,

    Im so in love w Scottish accent. And i have my daughter learning English w quite British accent. I will let her learn Scottish accent when she’s grown up. Im 💯% sure that only a few my fellow Malaysian love this kind of accent but im 3000% i love these accents.

    Genuinely shocked that he changed the lyrics from "when the tonguin' is done," to "when the battle is won." While the message is the same, it doesn't convey the same whaling tradition of the line tonguin', which was part of butchering the whale.

      I am an American who used to live in Scotland -- not, admittedly, in the Strathclyde area where Nathan is from. I could understand him, but I had a bit of trouble in places.

    I`ve seen the original video that is quoted here and OMG it is sooo good !
    I don`t have TikTok installed and i don`t want to, cause *everything* there is filmed *vertically* which is quite frankly stupid,
    but i guess i`m missing some wonderful stuff and amazing voices. I had instant goosebumps when i first watched that video and heard all these voices.

      Yeah that's the language learning game turned up a few difficulty levels.
      Trying to understand people with heavy regional accents is a pretty fun way to improve even when you feel like you're decently fluid.
