Actually I sing it litteraly every day at school with my mates. Some people want to record us, some others want to learn it to sing with us, and yes, the world is a bit better.
That's music bro...the right song can lift you up so high when it seems like everything in your life is going wrong It's not easy to explain, it's almost a spiritual thing, there is not reason you should feel better, you have a whole list of problems waiting for you....but in that moment, you just feel right.
I grew up on shanties and folk songs, but hearing them evolve and come to life over various iterations is chillingly beautiful. Reignites my love of them. That last one needed some vocals from Bedlam Bards or something thrown in.
Yer can't deny a shanty lads, sing to your heart's content, the time 'til you get to where ya want to be will be over in no time. During the summer i work at sea as part of a crew doing 7 day sailing trips, usualy high school kids but also other small groups of people of all ages, great fun, during these trips i'm usually the one to get a shanty going and most of the time everyone joins in on the fun.
Should add some scottish rock n folk to your playlist. Bands such as skipinnish, peat and diesel , tide lines and skerryvore just to name a few. You wont be disappointed
This through lockdown was one of the greatest things that came along to lift everyone- the joining of people from around the world to harmonise together to it was stunning 👍🏻🍻👏🏻🥃
Who would’ve thought that a sea shanty would unite races, political factions, enemies, and countries? Amazing song, amazing people, amazing collaboration. When we unite in a common love, task, or challenge.....then nothing becomes impossible. The Wellerman Comes should become our planets anthem. These people are the worlds treasures.
@@kevin55091 very true. I’m now a believer. I ordered this to be played in my Departments office and cubicle spaces on loop mode 24x7 and at a rather loud decibel level. Efficiency at work has increased by 843,198,468,034,592,904% since instituting this new approach.
Whomever is involved in the clip at 4 minutes, I actually started leaking tears from my eyes because something about this touched my soul deeply. Haunting, beautiful, and clearly this song resonates with people around the world, but your parts in it resonated with mine
I’m nostalgic for it already!! We literally all game together in spirit and sang during quarantine. Even though it was a hard time it shows how we can work together for something good, even physically separated from each other.
I would love to see Nathan perform this live with all of the people in the beginning of the video before the dubstep. Hell, I would love to be part of that group! Bet it would sound amazing to hear him and that group perform it.
If the world could put their differences aside and sing along with a good sea shanty or two, we would all be much better off. I'm so glad I saw this. ❤
Aw man, the Drunk Scottsman song! I was crazy about Irish Drinking songs when I was a teen. Haven't heard this one in a long while, but it brings back memories. Really great!
I’ve always loved this kind of music. And the lead vocals don’t need to be embellished with runs as the way Nathan sings it is perfect but I love the additional backgrounds and the two guys in the cars rendition
Without doubt this is so beautiful. Not just the song and the ppl involved but because of the community it created . The fact that no one was trying to make money but just love beauty love love and love music .
I wish there was a way to merge all of that into one song (at least when it comes to the Wellerman) While listening to them sing separately one can clearly hear how much each contributes to the song overall. Love individual voices. Would definitely enjoy listening to them sing together.

So coming back to this video, as I do so often, I love how everyone understood the assignment in letting Nathen sing the actual song and everyone only joins in for the chorus.

Thank you for this. I am American-Irish, 2nd gen. I was raised deep in the Irish culture (learned Celtic and everything), and have not heard Wellerman since I was around 5 yrs old. I was showing my kids the original Scarborough and other songs, found this. I cannot express how much this means to me. My family all died to Covid these last two years, I am the only one left. I want to give my children their culture, and you have exceeded this beyond all things. Thank you, very much. I can now sing these fun songs with my kids and teach them what my family taught me.
I think you remember wrong... The song is a New Zealand folk song from what I understand. Don't think your Irish family taught it to you, unless of course they were into New Zealand culture. But now the whole world can claim it, it's brought back from obscurity in a global cultural fusion, which is great. (Edit: give away of song's origin for me, the ship is "Billy of Tea", a billy being an Australian and New Zealand word for a tin used as a pot to boil water and make tea etc on a campfire. I don't think that word was used in the British Isles.)
You learned Celtic, did you? What did you learn that was Celtic? The art, the dress, the culture, the history, the music? Not a language called "Celtic" of course, there isn't one. Did you learn Gaelic, do you mean, or did you mean you learned how to tell tall tales?

Luke and Bobby Bass in the same video was all I needed. And Nathan's Scottish accent of course. I think he lost a bit of his accent with the Spotify version :/ but that's still good !

Luke Taylor! He's just a baby!
