I first heard that in a Did You Know Gaming video posted back in 2015. Nintendo were going to use Ravel's Bolero, but the Copyright was still in place. Even though it only had a month of Copyright left, Nintendo could not wait and Kondo produced this classic theme in one night.
@@pglAymer Yeah and? If Zelda wasnt a financial success it wouldnt be one of the most recognizable themes in the history of video games would it? Alot of these things are very dependant on Who? When? Where? The success of the series didnt rely on the music, the popularity of the music did rely on the success of the series though. Koji Kondi wrote it in one night and frankly, that's not a feat. Most average composer could write 5 of these in a day and Koji probably did and picked this one as the best out of the lot. "It's dangerous to go alone," whispers a tired, worn-out stranger. It's dark, but you know he has the look of a distant traveler from strangely known lands. Eyes on you, yet lost in memories of the spaces he's traversed -- wearing them ripe for your adventuring -- he focuses briefly. The flicker of an old courage in his eyes lights up the cave, reflecting on you and illuminating the quaint instrument on the floor. He gestures and you know: it's your turn now. You look down. In 86 I was 8yrs old playing Zelda on the original NES. This brings back so many memories. Life was so much easier back then and Mom and Dad was still alive.
Of course it's not bad. Only these 8-bit beeps can truly trigger those nostalgic feelings and make you re-experience the emotions you felt while exploring Zelda's magical world as a child.
One of the greatest intros to one of the greatest video games of all time. Playing Eldin Ring has reminded me a lot of the first time I played Zelda. The wonder, the adventure, truly special.
I remember my dad taking me to the local game store when I was 11, way back in 1987. I had earned enough money doing chores that I could pick out a new NES game. The moment I walked in, I saw the shiny gold cartridge high above the stack of new games......the rest was history. Such an awesome game and awesome opening soundtrack.
I remember I got this amazing game at Easter when I was 6 years old. I had no idea what it was but when I started playing it I was hooked since day 1! Mario came first but this is my first true favorite game! Zelda fan for life!
WIth the amount of callbacks Breath of the Wild has had for this game already, I wouldn't be surprised if we see an intro like this in that game (on the title screen)
And the use of modal interchange at the end of the descending 4 chord progression (A#m, G#maj, F#maj, Fmaj), and the C major right before the final Fmaj? Perfection
This is so iconic. I remember switching on the NES with the Zelda cart inside, and straight away you get this screen and those first few notes. It was so epic.

I'll never forget, they hid it under the cushion of the chair we had and I sat in the chair when my mom's boyfriend said he had a gift for me. I asked where it was and he said I was sitting on it. Confused, I said it was just the chair, but was directed to look under the cushion. Wasn't in the box, it was just the cartridge and manual, but it began for me that day.
Bloody hell 80s nintendo. You didn't bother fixing up the absurd English, or the ridiculous item names, but you DID bother changing "bible" to "book of magic". Awesome.
...what are you talking about? I'm referring to NoA rebranding the possibly offensive book title from the Japanese release (a moderately difficult edit), but not bothering to even slightly clean up the intro text (an fairly easy edit). The Japanese release had item names listed both in kana and in English.
About the change from "bible" to "book of magic," Nintendo of America had to rename it to avoid any religious controversies due to strict religious censorship issues at the time, though its unknown why the cross on Link's shield wasn't changed. It was the same for Link to the Past, in Japan the title of the game was originally "Triforce of the Gods" but because of said religious censorship they changed it to Link to the Past to avoid offending any religious groups, though the manga adaptation retained the original Japanese name when it was released.
phantomturtle44 Yes, I know, but I'm annoyed that they bothered changing the ROM for that (not an easy thing to do at the time) and didn't bother to patch up ANY of the other dumb names while they were there. I'm not worried about the weird censorship. Besides, Japanese バイブル doesn't carry the same connotations as Bible does in English, so I can understand that change. Dumb item names they could've changed while they were there, but didn't: 2nd Potion > Red Potion Clock > Watch Food > Bait Recorder > Flute Steppladder > Ladder All of these changes would've been SIGNIFICANTLY easier to make than the one that they did. In fact, I could do the top three in ten minutes without even having anything but the final ROM and a text editor. Also, you're probably right about it, but I wouldn't presume why the title was changed. After all, "Palutena's Mirror" became 'Kid Icarus' for reasons I'll never understand.
I love that this track just hits you the second the game starts up. It's like the game is SO excited to tell you about this tale involving a young man on his quest to reassemble an ancient, powerful artifact, delve into dangerous dungeons looking for items and clues, and rescue the princess of Hyrule from a monstrous wizard and thief.
Came home after school and my older brother said “check this out” popped in some a golden cartridge in the Nintendo …… the pink background, the waterfall and the. The music hit. Zelda changed my life from that day forward, I was hooked.
This...This is the beginning of a adventure...you wont forget...and you wish to play it over and over, this game...really makes you feel like a adventurer...
Memories of a 5 year old me, hypnotized by the flashing triforce, waterfall and incredible music. No way to really describe how these images are burned in to my brain, but just the first few seconds evokes a feeling of childhood wonder and awe. The way the background fades into night, with all the items scrolling by... EPIC!
When I was super little, my mom would play this while me and my sister cuddled up to her and watched. Mom tells me I asked at least a million questions as she was trying to focus. My first exposure to video games was all through my mom, dad was never very good at them but mom was an absolute queen
Comparing this to what could have been, that is to say Ravel's Bolero, it makes my head spin and I can't help wondering what Zelda would have been without it's iconic theme. I'm glad Koji had to compose this, he helped shape a generation.
I'm only 14 but I've played this game on emulators and somehow I feel nostalgic when listening to this. Breath of the Wild is great and all but they definitely don't make games as good as they used to
I was kinda too young to even realize how privileged i was to have this pretty much upon release. But i do remember how magical it felt seeing that intro screen not just blinking, after blowing in it 20 times. Getting the damn thing to work was half the adventure 😂
Many years ago prince darkness "Gannon" stole one of the triforce with power. Princess Zelda had one of the triforce with wisdom. She divided it into "8" units to hide it from "Gannon" before she was captured. Go find the "8" units "Link" to save her.
Orignally this game was meant to have more of a futuristic setting, explained why the Triforce pieces are called units in this game. A Link to the Past also meant to have a similar setting involving time travel, before the Dark World was in place instead
The chills I get when I hear this are simply immaculate. I’m 13 so I want around when this came out, but I have many fond memories of watching my dad play, and even playing it myself on a few occasions.
Koji Kondo recently said that he compose this track in only 1 night. Incredible.

It's like the game is SO excited to tell you about this tale involving a young man on his quest to reassemble an ancient, powerful artifact, delve into dangerous dungeons looking for items and clues, and rescue the princess of Hyrule from a monstrous wizard and thief.
This game was a fine example of one of the things that made the 80s great!
Aww 1987, the nostalgia is overwhelming. Reminds me of when I had an imagination
Came home after school and my older brother said “check this out” popped in some a golden cartridge in the Nintendo …… the pink background, the waterfall and the. The music hit. Zelda changed my life from that day forward, I was hooked.
That 'please look up the manual for details' was so important for the first game.
This...This is the beginning of a adventure...you wont forget...and you wish to play it over and over, this game...really makes you feel like a adventurer...
came back after the final TOTK trailer. it's amazing to see this theme developed into something so grandiose and amazing.
The brilliance of this game still amazes me almost 40yrs later
33 years ago, this game came out. 33 years later, we have so many amazing games with equally amazing stories.
Happy 35th birthday, Link!
Still epic after all these years. This was the first title screen I'd ever seen that successfully created a mood.
It's amazing that they were able to make an 8-bit theme sound this good.
Comparing this to what could have been, that is to say Ravel's Bolero, it makes my head spin and I can't help wondering what Zelda would have been without it's iconic theme. I'm glad Koji had to compose this, he helped shape a generation.
no ones talking about how the power bracelet looks like a croissant 1:01
The nostalgia is so overwhelming. Imma cri
Isn’t it tho? I was 6 when this came out. The music brings me back to when I had an imagination.
Shout out to all those who get the blue ring and white sword before even setting foot in Level 1.
corvettez06usa I did that because I couldn't find lvl1
Happy 34th Anniversary, "The Legend Of Zelda"!
Who came here after the Tears of the Kingdome trailer.
Me
I'm only 14 but I've played this game on emulators and somehow I feel nostalgic when listening to this. Breath of the Wild is great and all but they definitely don't make games as good as they used to
The 2000s and Last Century is Where it's at Bro
Stuff is Too Complicated Now a Days
Happy 35th and thank you for all of the magic and adventure, Nintendo!
I was kinda too young to even realize how privileged i was to have this pretty much upon release. But i do remember how magical it felt seeing that intro screen not just blinking, after blowing in it 20 times. Getting the damn thing to work was half the adventure 😂
simply playing majoras mask is what got me to love the franchise
Many years ago prince darkness "Gannon" stole one of the triforce with power. Princess Zelda had one of the triforce with wisdom. She divided it into "8" units to hide it from "Gannon" before she was captured.
Go find the "8" units "Link" to save her.
*****
I'd translate the "units" as "pieces".
*****
Well, my unit *is* pretty cool. (I'm sorry)
Those spare spaces indeed xD
Orignally this game was meant to have more of a futuristic setting, explained why the Triforce pieces are called units in this game. A Link to the Past also meant to have a similar setting involving time travel, before the Dark World was in place instead
Still cannot believe that this is in 2010
it's in 1986
From day 1, the music has been on point in conveying the exact emotion of each and every game.
This is the best video game theme of all time...Hands down and bottom line.
My life is still incomplete I still haven't finished a single zelda/kirby game.
Austin Jasay that's because you never played A Link to the past.
Oh well, all right
Bruh kirby games are EASY do you at least have one kirby game

The chills I get when I hear this are simply immaculate. I’m 13 so I want around when this came out, but I have many fond memories of watching my dad play, and even playing it myself on a few occasions.
Absolutely masterful! A memorable piece to behold! Thank you Koji Kondo for your fantastic work. It is seriously and unquestionably appreciated.
