I remember my Dad flipping through channels looking for a show to watch when he came across the Weezer video for Buddy Holly and he said to me and my brother, "I don't remember this episode"? We had to explain to him he was on MTV (remember when they used to show videos?) and it was a music vid, not an episode of Happy Days. He was relieved, he hated the music btw...
Before I always thought Weezer was an okay band, I only knew tracks like Beverly Hills and Island in the Sun. So from those songs I kinda painted a picture of Weezer as a band who's out there but are still trying to make their way up the charts. But Because of this video I realized from what you were saying the blue album was one of the most well loved album of the 90's. I thought to myself "really Weezer, one of the best alternative bands of all time, give me a break" But because of your work I pick up this CD and I was absolutely blown away. I had never known Weezer was this amazing, Only in dreams always gets me on the break of tears! After that I listened to Pinkerton which I appreciated and soon fell in love with. It really sucks how Weezer sound today (while it still being good) is not the same as 94. But I still like Red and Green for their own characteristics. Anyways I just wanted to say Thanks Vinyl Rewind for exposing me to this kind of music, I love it!!
Contart22 You are very welcome. It's crazy for me to think there are folks out there, like you, who have no idea what Weezer was capable of. At one time you couldn't go an hour without hearing a Weezer song on the radio or TV. I've really tuned out on their latest efforts but I hear really good things about their latest album, like it's the closest we're gonna get to Blue and Pinkerton. I feel like Rivers is the Orson Wells of today. Just peaked way too damn early. I'm glad I was able to help!
My name is jonas is just a perfect song in my opinion. It is legitimately the only song that made me struggle for awhile as to whether I preferred the blue album or pinkerton. Even though in the end I still prefer pinkerton, my name is jonas is still my favorite individual weezer song. Every little detail about is just so perfect in how it connects to the central theme of the song, from the constant shifts from quiet to loud and the lack of a chorus reflecting the unpredictability and chaos of adulthood to the metaphor of a one way bus ticket to tall about aging. It's just all so great. I love it so much I have actually written several college papers about it.
"Oh wow Happy Days is on. Wait what cannel am I on? Why is Happy Days on MTV? We-Weezer? Did he just said Weezer? Who is this band and how do they rock so much? This is incredible! Wow is that the fonz? When did the Fonz get moves like that? Wait it's over? No come back!" So many emotions
you know eric, the buddy holly music video was the first "video" i ever saw on a computer. after searching i found that it was windows 95 Weezer's "Buddy Holly" on Windows 95 install CD love, beastie boy # 1 of 3 ;)
One of the greatest albums of all time, who doesn't love this album that was a teenager in the 90s?? Everything about it, right down to that iconic blue cover lol.
My wife just got me this and I agree with you 100%!!! I've listened to it at least 10 times in a row and I find myself wanting to buy a better turntable. Love the videos, keep them coming!!
I originally owned on cd and digital which I still have and now I have it on vinyl for my birthday from my mom awesome this is my favorite album and pretty relatable being a nerd
This review is personally my favorite. Especially when you mentioned the bowling shirt, I can't begin to tell you how long I've been looking for one like it, along with Matt Sharp's sweater from Say It Ain't So music video. You've earned a new subscriber!
I love Weezer ! Pinkerton is my favorite Weezer album ever. I love "Pink Triangle", and "The Good Life". I also own an orange cd called six hits, which features "Buddy Holly, "Say it Ain't So",(another favorite of mine), "Hash Pipe",. I have a "crush" on Brian Bell, love his look. Great video !
+Cindy Urban Yes, PInkerton is awesome as well, very different album though. I never heard of that CD, that's really cool. Thanks for stopping by the Vinyl Pad
I do really like this video but I would love if your returned to this album and made a longer form analysis like your newer reviews. It feels like that would do the album justice - and you would be able to flex your original UK pressing :^)
Weezer's blue album was the first CD I ever bought as well!!! I randomly picked through someones garage sale, I had no idea I would be playing it constantly on car rides.
Your a loner....a rebel! I love this album and also bought the Mofi pressing a few weeks back. This was the album that I would wake and bake to in my much younger days. Great video, I love the cut scene to the video.
Vinyl Rewind I like the pressing, but the bottom of the cover split within a few days. I don't know that the quality is enough to justify the price. Plus, I have heard of a number of pressings that sound worse than the original, so I am unsure of Mofi as a whole.
I would just like to say that I loved the video and that I bought the same vinyl and the same CD about 7 years ago,I fell in love with this album for the same reasons as you and I also hate the same logo written "ORIGINAL MASTER TRACKS" Cheers
I have a new Reissue of this Album I bought it on cd when it was released, I’m a big fan of Pinkerton, The Green Album, the Red, which doesn’t give the credit it deserves, anyway I picked up a guitar and learned every song on the blue album and still use the D # tuning
It’s the album I would have to take on a desert island. I have probably listened to at least one song from it every day since it came out. I was a high school junior and I think I went through like 3 tapes of it before getting the CD. I swear I listen to some part of it every day
I got to see them play at Avalon in Boston opening for Lush the summer of 94. Real fun show with a pretty small crowd since only Undone had been released. Personally notable for being the first, and only time I've seen someone literally crowd surf. I mean someone pretended to be a surf board, and another person stood on his back surf style as they were carried over the crowd.
For the first time when I heard it, I was 15 years old and it didn't really give me the expression of what it's meant to be. I just liked the music, the way Rivers Cuomo wrote the songs and the band performed them, I also really liked to play the guitar along with the record. But I didn't felt it. For a couple of years this album completely disappeared from my playlist, I couldn't enjoy it anymore because I had other preferences (like Arctic Monkeys, Oasis, Depeche Mode, The Cure etc.) Now I am 20 years old and two months ago I picked up my old computer and wanted to listen to so music. The first thing I saw in my iTunes playlist was this album. I didn't really wanted to hear it as a whole piece but after the second song I just could not stop. As a lonesome college student, I just felt as a whole with this piece of music. It seemed to me as if a friend of me from the college told me different stories from his daily life or as if I was thinking aloud.
weezer blue ailbm is like the only ailbm I listen to from those guys to me the blue ailbm is the jam every day I listen to the same songs over like 80,000 times weezer rocks
There's a pretty recent repress (at least in Canada) of just the normal blue cover for $20. About to go pick it up after this review so can't comment on the sound quite yet.
I actually prefer Pinkerton, but it was such a great debut and its so awesome. I'm really glad I was the age I was in the 90s - the last great decade for rock (at least in widespread pop culture)... Sweater song is just the best... ever check out the album "The Return of the Rentals", which was Matt Sharp's band after he left - I might love that album even more!
I really like Pinkerton too, I just have more of a connection to this album. I remember people saying Pinkerton was terrible. My friend even gave me his copy. I thought it was great. I use to play trumpet to it. (very random). But yes, I was into the Rentals as well. The weird thing was he was still in Weezer when the first Rentals album came out. I think by the 2nd album he was out of the band which is why, along with River putting the band on hold after Pinkerton, a lot of people thought Weezer was done
Thank you! Great suggestion. I really like Pinkerton, but for very different reasons. I didn't hear it until a couple years after it was released. My friend actually gave it to me because he didn't like it.
Loving your reviews, only discovered you tonight through Sgt Peppers! Hearing you talking about this album makes me think of August And Everything After by Counting Crows and Infinity Land by Biffy Clyro. Any chance of reviewing those please? Much respect from Scotland!
My favorite on this album is Holiday for sure. Every single track is pure gold. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a reasonably priced copy of Blue, Pinkerton, or Make Believe on vinyl, so it looks like I'm just going to have to hold onto those CDs that turned me onto them in the first place. Super review! What do you think of White?
+Hope Curtis The MoFi pressings of those albums are fairly reasonable price wise. As far as White, I really like it so far. Is it as timeless as Blue or Pinkerton, no idea but it's nice to hear Weezer doing what Weezer does best. Thank you for watching
hey man, really like ur vids, i really enjoyed all of your album reviews, you're always so filled with passion and knowledge when reviewing these classics, keep ur the great videos man :D you've got yourself a subscriber :)
Kinda funny.. but the first CD I ever bought was the one you've got standing up there on the other side. I had Bleach before Nevermind came out, but it was a cassette. Remember those fucking tapes??! Lol I'm so glad we don't have to use those anymore. Sound would get all warped after awhile.. or if you left them in the car during Floridas baking summer heat!! And to keep it rolling, the third CD I bought also had a blue cover. Angel Dust by Faith No More!! I still listen to that album quite a bit. My second CD also had a color codename thing going on. The Black Album, Metallica. Damn. When you said it was the first CD you ever bought I had immediate instance recall of opening Nevermind for the first listen. The sound just knocked me down. My parents had a pretty good stereo for that time!! Used to fucking blast that thing when they weren't home!!
Awesome review. I basically enjoy any video you do. lol I'm starting to look into more 90s music because I watch some 90s TV shows. This band sounds interesting. I heard some of their songs on video games. I love My Name Is Jonas and Say It Ain't So. Those songs give my early memories of playing Guitar Hero and Rock Band in the mid to late 2000s. I'm surprised you got an "Original Sound Recording" version cheaper then a standard issue. Usually those versions are worth more for albums(at least were I'm from). And usually for 50s, 60s, and 70s bands I find original or a issue that came out a few years after tha original date, cheaper than a reissue.
Thank you! Funny enough the MoFi edition was the least expensive that I could find. You gotta remember, throughout most of the 90s, vinyl was virtually dead. So an original issue vinyl pressing is way pricey these days, if you can find a copy. Contrast that with bands in the decades you reference, vinyl was king, so there's way more copies floating around.
Ok, I knew that but I didn't think of it that way. Thanks!:) But now a days, vinyl can sometimes cost more, and then CDs can sometimes cost more. For 90s bands, the cds would be a hell of a lot cheaper then the vinyls.
***** Don't forget, cassettes were huge in the 80s and early 90s. I remember buying a lot of cassettes because they were generally around $10, where as CD's were at least $20. The problem was that the industry (and maybe the buying public) phased out vinyl. Most music stores just didn't carry vinyl anymore. It took up more space and at the time it was considered inferior to CDs. Most kids were buying cassettes because they were cheaper and they could listen to them on their walkmans. Vinyl just seemed old fashioned. Most people were dumping their vinyl collections to "upgrade" to CDs. A practice a lot of people regret now. But who could blame them, vinyl is heavy to move and takes up a lot of space.
But Vinyl is awesome!;) There is a guy Joe on RUclips, username MeanMr Mayo, He was born in the early 60s but started to collect in about the late 70s, he said he collected so much Beatles vinyl but then in around 1986, he gave up vinyl forever and sold most of his collection to buy CDs. But then one day in around 2011, he saw a Vinyl video on RUclips and he instantly got back into Vinyl again. He has about 700-800 LPs(I'm guessing) now. You should check out his collection, and he's a pretty cool dude!:)
So this is one of my favorite albums and one of my favorite songs is Surf Wax America, but am I alone in noticing that this song has perhaps the worst inner groove distortion than any other album? Did I just get a bad pressing or is this a thing others have noticed as well?
one of my favorites as well and that strip annoys the fuck out of me too but what happened to the intro? and playing the songs you talk about in the background?
As far as the songs, RUclips is cracking down hard on audio copyright violations despite this being a fair-use issue. I never know if they will out right mute my audio, so I stopped playing the music all together last year. I noticed that other reviewers do same. As far as the intro, we're working on something new. Thanks for watching
Did the lyrics of 'In My Garage' ("I've got Ace Frehley, and I got Peter Criss...") make you listen to KISS (given that you did not know KISS beforehand)?
exactly but it took me a couple of years before I knew who he was talking about. Actually, it might be right around the same time when Detroit Rock City came out. I think that's when I first got into Kiss. it's all coming back to me now
hennck Sadly I have nothing by KISS on vinyl. From a packaging perspective I think Love Gun is pretty great. But as far as my favourites I'll go with their debut as well as Dressed to Kill and Destroyer. How about for you?
Vinyl Rewind Debut and Dressed To Kill are in my book of cool as well. Destroyer not really. You should check out Creatures Of The Night for KISS's heaviest sounding effort and, for a more mellow moment, their Unplugged Session.
Gideon Nightingale It's funny how much hate Pinkerton got when it came out. I really liked it then and I love it now. but the two albums couldn't be more different
Yeah. The Rock Critic did a pretty good series on Weezer's career over on his channel that I really like. He makes some pretty good points on why people disliked Pinkerton.
Gideon Nightingale I'll have to check it out. The sophomore album/ follow up can always be tough for bands. At the time, my friends and I thought Weezer were done because there was such a long stretch before the "green" album came out
I'm not saying it does, sorry what I meant was, most collectors get excited when they see that strip. But I understand what you're saying, I'd rather see a cover unencumbered.
Can someone explain me how Weezer is nerd rock? What is so nerdy in the emotional songs about being tired of sex, about holidays, desire to party, parents, friends and relationships.
Dan the blue album reflects Rivers innocence on tracks like "in the garage" / "Say it ain't so" and the Pinkerton album is all about Rivers sexual frustrations.
I think you should redo this one beacuse you only talked about one song in general and you just explained how you like the album you need to go into the tracks more than My Name is Jonas
+Trevor Dailey eh, maybe you're right, but this one is 2 years old and I keep honing the episode format. I don't really like going back but we'll see. I have Pinkerton up next
Vinyl Rewind well my friend (love the channel by the way) if you've noticed, In The Garage gets seldom time to be played live. It ranks low on most list and many many people think it's one of the worst if not the worst on the album. I personally think it's amazing and can name a few songs that aren't as good as it on the album (which is hard to do).
thank you! Really?! I did not know that, I love every song off the album, if anything Surf Wax America is the weakest on the album (most superficial). I really relate to In The Garage
The World Has Turned and Left Me Here is the greatest song ever written. I still have my original CD I bought the week this record came out.
to be able to say that's the first CD you ever bought is pretty cool
My first cassette was Weird Al, I want to say Alapalooza
Second CD, after Dookie.
@@VinylRewind giving new context to those famous "BLUE light specials" K-Mart had, no? 🤠
my name is jonas is a song about how when you're a kid you wanna be an adult and when you're an adult you wanna be a kid
I though it was about his brothers insurance troubles
I remember my Dad flipping through channels looking for a show to watch when he came across the Weezer video for Buddy Holly and he said to me and my brother, "I don't remember this episode"? We had to explain to him he was on MTV (remember when they used to show videos?) and it was a music vid, not an episode of Happy Days. He was relieved, he hated the music btw...
Haha, ah man that's a great story. I can't believe he was fooled, that's awesome and even better that he hated the music.
So true, lol. Thanks for rekindling a fond memory.
Before I always thought Weezer was an okay band, I only knew tracks like Beverly Hills and Island in the Sun. So from those songs I kinda painted a picture of Weezer as a band who's out there but are still trying to make their way up the charts. I love it so much I have actually written several college papers about it.
yeah I feel you. my high school soundtrack. and that dreamy last track
This channel is a hidden gem. I love it. Keep doing what you doing.
Thanks Collin
Buddy Holly made looking like a dork cool way before Weezer though.
True
That's why Rivers says he looks like him
Yes but it wasn't a 'dork' look in Buddy Holly's time- check any yearbook from the 50s/60s lol
I'm waaaay late, but Only In Dreams has one of the best build ups in a song I've ever heard. 8 min song and I couldn't get tired of it.

The Blue Album, 311's self titled album, Bush's Sixteen Stone and the Violent Femmes self titled are my all time favorites.
This RUclips channel's VERY underrated!! Great Video Man!
Thanks for stopping by, be sure to tell your friends!
In the Garage is the best track; fight me.
Your cheekbones... Defined. As. Frickc
The Blue Album is my first CD as well .. Classic album .. Its dare I say perfect .. I need this vinyl!

Harmless Rebel Bummer about the cover. Do you keep the vinyl in the cover? My copy seems pretty sturdy, I wonder what happened.
I would just like to say that I loved the video and that I bought the same vinyl and the same CD about 7 years ago,I fell in love with this album for the same reasons as you and I also hate the same logo written "ORIGINAL MASTER TRACKS"
Cheers
I still have my first cassette. Original blue album Weezer…even has the old BMG sticker on it.
yeah, i still got a vinyl copy of this LP, you're so right gotta dig it up and jam it!
Weezer Great choice!
Thanks man!
This album speaks to my soul
I am in middle school now and this album is one of my top five favorites. Also the mobile fidelity thing annoys me on my copy too. Awesome video.
Thanks man, that's really cool to hear that the album is reaching out to the next generation. Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like the strip
I have a new Reissue of this Album I bought it on cd when it was released, I’m a big fan of Pinkerton, The Green Album, the Red, which doesn’t give the credit it deserves, anyway I picked up a guitar and learned every song on the blue album and still use the D # tuning

First CD i also ever bought, actaully this, and Foo Fighters(with the ray gun). Great review mon, same with you're take on Pinkerton
I’ve always thought rivers said, “what’s with these homies pissin ma girl”, but it was dissin not pissin.
One of these days you will have to open a review with you packing that pipe and lighting it.

I am in 110% agreement 😂. Th and for this great experience.
Thanks!
Thanks so much!
i like this album
My Name Is Jonas is about Rivers' brother getting in a car crash and getting screwed by the insurance company
I see that copy of Automatic For The People on the wall
I only recently saw how much that pressing goes for these days, crazy
Awesome review.

Thanks!:)
But now a days, vinyl can sometimes cost more, and then CDs can sometimes cost more.
But Vinyl is awesome!;)
There is a guy Joe on RUclips, username MeanMr Mayo, He was born in the early 60s but started to collect in about the late 70s, he said he collected so much Beatles vinyl but then in around 1986, he gave up vinyl forever and sold most of his collection to buy CDs.
But then one day in around 2011, he saw a Vinyl video on RUclips and he instantly got back into Vinyl again. He has about 700-800 LPs(I'm guessing) now. You should check out his collection, and he's a pretty cool dude!:)
***** Ah yeah, MeanMr Mayo is great! I didn't know about his background, very cool. He's got a great collection for sure
this is by far the funniest video I've ever seen. right off the bat 0:28 killed me
SURF WAX AMERICA!!!
It's a shame you didn't use the songs for the video (fucking copyright thing), I prefer your other videos when you do that (Ex. Nevermind)
You should review the new Weezer Album!
I read that it's pretty good, not as great as this or Pinkerton of course. i haven't heard it yet though
Thanks for watching
ah that sucks. well, keep up the good work!
metalsabatico Yeah it's a bummer but hopefully that will change soon
0_0 I just realizes
If Doug Walker is the Critic,
James Rolfe is the Nerd,
Then you'd be the Geek
"Buddy Holly" & "Say It Ain't So".
great picks
Did the lyrics of 'In My Garage' ("I've got Ace Frehley, and I got Peter Criss...") make you listen to KISS (given that you did not know KISS beforehand)?
exactly but it took me a couple of years before I knew who he was talking about. Actually, it might be right around the same time when Detroit Rock City came out. I think that's when I first got into Kiss. it's all coming back to me now
Which KISS records do you have, buddy? And which are your favourites?
hennck Sadly I have nothing by KISS on vinyl. From a packaging perspective I think Love Gun is pretty great. But as far as my favourites I'll go with their debut as well as Dressed to Kill and Destroyer. How about for you?
Vinyl Rewind
Debut and Dressed To Kill are in my book of cool as well. Destroyer not really. You should check out Creatures Of The Night for KISS's heaviest sounding effort and, for a more mellow moment, their Unplugged Session.
hennck Thanks for the suggestions, I will definitely check out Creatures. Their Unplugged session sounds cool as well.
No One Else, Buddy Holly and Say It Ain't So best songs
Personally I'm more of a Pinkerton person, but nobody can resist the fun charms of ol' Blue. Even my Weezer hating friend rated it a 4/pi.
At the time, my friends and I thought Weezer were done because there was such a long stretch before the "green" album came out
Thanks for the heads up. Im going to have to revisit Weezer. The music band. Not my ex wife :)---Colin
You call your ex Weezer? Haha
Why did you stop doing this style of content?
I have the shirt with the shoes showing.🤓
Did you enjoy Pinkerton too?
+travis miller Absolutely!!!
Dude I’m exactly like you
lol most collectors drool over that mofi strip on the top, but i know what you mean
I had no idea that strip bothered other people
I'm not saying it does, sorry what I meant was, most collectors get excited when they see that strip. But I understand what you're saying, I'd rather see a cover unencumbered.
rubberalleybluesband Gotcha, thanks for clarifying.
I have Pinkerton up next
if connor from detroit: become human was real
It makes me upset knowing how much In The Garage is outcasted
how so?
Vinyl Rewind well my friend (love the channel by the way) if you've noticed, In The Garage gets seldom time to be played live. It ranks low on most list and many many people think it's one of the worst if not the worst on the album. I personally think it's amazing and can name a few songs that aren't as good as it on the album (which is hard to do).
thank you! Really?! I did not know that, I love every song off the album, if anything Surf Wax America is the weakest on the album (most superficial). I really relate to In The Garage
Me too man! It's a very personal song to me. I'll agree with you on Surf Wax America. I also think Only In Dreams in a bit underrated
ah man, that was the best epic air drumming song

awesome
It be more appropriate for a metal album.
Steve Heron true, but Rivers is into metal, so it works
