We also live in Tennessee. I recommend put in a 2 inch pipe and where you put your half-inch and if the water is clean, dumping it into a 250 gallon water tank or bigger constant flow install a pump and you can pump water all the way back to your home
We installed a 5 gallon catch tonight. We was able to do laundry take a shower, cook drink water the garden because you have a constant flow and leopard transpired and much bigger flow. Just something to think about.
We've been offgridding in WNC for 8 years now. It's a lot of hard work. We started out hauling water from our creek to water horses and ourselves. Never have improved for rainwater catchment, but we do pump up from a spring we found. We have a hand pump that we never hooked up. So many projects. We like our privacy also but live on the highway. Not ideal, but it works for running a business someday. I'm getting into permaculture and hoping to put some more sustainable systems into action. I'm looking forward to following your journey and seeing your progress unfold. Congratulations on getting your hands on some great land.
Lived on spring water most of my life. Get a wire brush and clean of everything you can off the solid rock in front of the spring. A little mortar mix and a few bricks and box in the front of the spring. Make sure to put a piece of pipe with a clean out cap in the lowest spot just in case silt build's up and your out flow pipe about in the middle. It's worked for us for about 40+ years. Our spring is about 80' above our place and we have around 35 psi of water pressure in our house.
You all should install a well with a manual pump into the property. If you have natural springs then you probably have enough ground water to do this. It would be more convenient too because you can install one near your buildings. No need to hike down to get water everyday
A friend did something similar when the well didn’t work out. They dammed the spring, then pipes it to two 500 gal tanks. They have a pump that is powered by a generator. They turn on the generator/pump when they want to use the water.
Once I stopped drinking city water. I got better once I stopped eating gmo food I got better. Water matters and food matters especially with you and your children's health , animals health.

Just a quick comment from someone who has wintered in an RV.
Wrap the underside in plastic wrap put some rocks along the bottom to hold it down from blowing in the wind place a small electric heater set to 45° under the RV, but on a block to keep it off the ground where it could get wet, inside the plastic to keep the pipes and holding tanks from freezing. This also helps to keep the inside of your RV warmer. Best wishes for you guys.
Using ridged foam works even better. I winter's in Sturgis SD in '01 and with 1.5 thick foam I was able to use lost heat from floor , 1 heat tape and no extra heater

A few things - I live in Tennessee, and you can legally grade your own lumber, and there are several work arounds for the cabin snafu. Doing your own solar is against code in Tennessee unless your are a licensed professional - no work around for that. Typically anything for owner/operator residential you can do yourself with inspection at worst case, but the state actually supercede county on solar, and says no. I live in a country with little to no building code/guidance and asked in advance but then found out later I can't use that power for my home. We are almost done building our cabin from the ground up ourselves, so I know the struggle. We are 1hr outside Chattanooga.
Oh yeah, you guys rule!! I have been off grid since 05, I have 4 acres in the hills of southern California, I am currently building a double wide container house, with a 8000 watt solar system I built up with a 5 kw inverter and 10 kw , of used lithium batterys , I wish I knew how to send you some pictures,of the setup, I have a composting toilet, and a septic system , I am going to setup a small greenhouse soon, and set up a bio mass gas generator next year hopefully 😂!!

It doesn’t matter where you get your water source I would always run it through my filtration system you don’t wanna get legionella and Giardia even if they say the water is clean I would still run it through a filter like a Berkey just to make sure the water you’re drinking is OK I’m a medical technologist with a masters in microbiology just be careful cause you can get so sick from that bacteria
Interesting fact present in my son’s AP Geography class…name a state in the US whose water is not polluted and drinkable without filtration? Guessed right…there isn’t one.
And yet look how long our ancestors survived on natural water from the earth. !!!!

I agree. Once we get our hand well pump in, I’d like to get some type of purification system before I drink it. We are on the aquifer in N Central FL and my husband disagrees because a couple of companies are now pulling from a few of the natural springs here to bottle the water. So he thinks the water is safe. I agree with you though. I can boil it for cooking… but to just drink it without boiling it or filtering it first, I’m not going to chance it. What kind of purification system or filtration system is easy?
Ages ago, folks got Dysentery, cholera, Hep A And E and other parasitic illnesses from drinking non boiled water from the streams and lakes. And way back then (1850’s 1890’s) there were not the pollutants we have today but they still got sick. Not risking it.
LifeSaver is another very good filter.
It's not cheap though as I spent enough on extra cartridge, carbon filters, pump, shower attachment, etc. and it ran me around $1,100.00.
But I'm good for about the next 10 years.
As for solar pnls, Robert Murrey Smith site showed that phosporescent yellow clear plastic over a panel actually got more usable light for more-than-normal power by a few %! Try that!//Steve B.
When I was living in Montana we tapped a spring above us for water. We built a spring box and ran a line down the mountain to our place. Because of the drop we had too much water pressure and had to have a bypass draining off excess water. And, oh yeah, had to build a pretty substantial cover to keep the bears from ripping it open.
You said you also have water falls on the site . Have you considered using a water powered dc generator to charge the battery's with simple and DYI do-able all long as you have a 15 foot drop. can produce 500 watts constant power as long as the water flows.

Felt so sorry seeing u guys struggle w the 250lb battery box. I have pushed an 800 pound Chrysler big block motor up a plank from ground to my van floor on a plywood engine skid..over some 1/2" pipe free-rollers! Just like the Egyptions..no sweat...by myself!!! No one believes me though..Haha!! I think I could mng another 200lbs if I really push hard. An old warehouse box roller track works wonders too.

Need a spring box!
Funny story about a spring. I grew up in Ohio in a hollow. At the base of one large sloping hill was a spring. This was the main source of water for us, everyone drank it. I think around 1963 when I was 8 years old my dad and me were at the spring one day and who knows what motivated him to say this I'll never know. He said, Son one day they'll probably put this water in bottles and sell it !! True Story. By the way this spring never went dry and the water was always ice cold and crystal clear. I doubt that it was ever tested.

Great job ! Things are coming along good, Water one of our most important needs ! finding water is awesome, good drinking water even more so, You have enough property there is so much you can do, water is like gold in many areas, I could enjoy a little of your weather right now, I my part of the country it was -48c this morning & staying like that for next 4 days it will feel like spring when we get back to -20 :) The stove says just keep the wood comin :)

You could set you a tote down there, lower than your spring pipe, then use a 12v pump to pump it up to your living area. Eustus Conway had a way to pump it up hill with no power, so, might wanna look into that. From what I understand, you run it further down hill through a pipe, and then that pressure will push it up hill, all the way to your home.

This is awesome. We just moved off grid ourselves and have been working on the same exact thing. Just built a small dam, and now trying to figure out how to get it about 70' uphill. Great video y'all! Good luck with everything, we have looked into building a ram pump but have to figure it out more. 💖
Check out, the channels that setup a ram pump, it uses the water pressure to push the water up hill with out the use of electricity, good luck.
Why don't you build a foundation under your shed, have a contractor ancher it to the foundation with a seal plate, then the shed will not be a ready moveable shed, it would be a permanent structure that could be added on to with building permits

If you can't drink it look on RUclips how to build a cheap Berkey water filter. Then you will be able to drink it. Even without a water filter your livestock can drink it. God bless have a great day.
Now you can bury a tank and allow the water to fill it up. Put you a solar powered pump in it and pump water to your homestead.

Here's something that you might find interesting. In West Central Arkansas there are several springs in the area. These springs all come from under ground rivers that originate in Alaska. So the spring water here is actually water from Alaska.

Next week will be a surprise when the camera pulls back from the mirror, and it's Matt applying his makeup. 🤣Does this mean that Cass can wash dishes twice as fast? I think we're in the La Niña weather pattern, so it should be warmer, and wetter, for you this winter. Is there a water filter, like maybe Aquapur, that would remove bacteria and heavy metals, but retain the minerals you want?
I have friends who live off of the water they get from their spring's, the most recent spring we setup, gives about 3 gallons a minute, first we excavated all the soft top soil away from the actual spring head that was coming out in virgin hard pack ) DG soil, we then used the back hoe to dig a large resesiion / basin to be able to stack clean river rock in a layer then we used some 1 inch PVC pipe to build a catch manifold with holes drilled into it that will be layed completely under the water , then we put another layer of rocks to cover the PVC manifold that is at just the proper level to let the water flow out of the basin through a slight damn , then we built another manifold exactly the same as the first , layed it above the first one and again set a load of rocks into the basin to keep the second manifold clear of debris , the second manifold is there in case the first one some how gets clogged, then we completely covered) incased the entire spring setup with thick pond liner to keep the source clear of debris and the animals from being able to get into the source, then on the end of the spring feed pipe we setup what is called a spring box , with a pipe that is 5 to 6 inches up from the bottom of the box, to connect the pipe that goes down to the house water tank, and then another pipe setup for the over flow at the spring box itself, we have the water pipe that goes to the tank , setup to bypass the tank, when full to be able to go farther down and fill a pond ,
Maybe build a cistern if that how you spell it

How or where did you keep Christmas decorations in 70 sq. ft? Does she have an on and off camera personality, or is she nuts all the time? 😎 I grew up outside a small town and played in the woods all the time, and have traveled, hiked, and camped in every state, but mostly in Missouri, Arkansas, and Tennessee. My experience is that springs are seasonal to some extent. They usually flow the most in spring and fall, tend to decrease or dry up in mid summer and winter. Ground water at some point came from rainwater. If it tests good and you use it for drinking, I would also set a tank below the spring if possible to rotate water from. You could also get a 12 or 24 volt pump at some point and send water to the camper on demand. Note: the lower in the valley, the purer, more filtered and mineralized the water. The beauty of off grid is that the ideas and projects never end...
We must not really like fried eggs because we have to mix them in with fried potatoes or frozen hash browns. We do sunny side up (with a lid) then make a hash of potatoes, eggs, and broken up bacon. We start it out like it will end up anyway once eaten... 🙄 🙃 A relative had a refrigerator in their basement that a parent had bought soon after WWII ended. It was still running 40 years later but the lights would go dim every time it came on. They finally just tossed it as it would not die.

Merry Christmas Happy New here's something you can think about since your little spring is on go down about 50 ft away from your downstream and start building a dam this helps build a back up 1 cent starts getting full it will overflow over the dam and start purifying that to you didn't even build a stream that strong enough to build a a hydro generator
