Eating food is likely the most important activity we do in our every days lives, yet, it is often treated like a chore. We've become so disconnected with something that is so important. Our goal on our Off-Grid homestead is to farm and raise much food as we can on-site ourselves and source nearly everything else locally. This is why.

30 years ago, I had an employee who had 20 acres on the edge of a small town, and they actually did that, they kept their huge freezer on the back porch full of deer and gave it away when it was full. I got a lot of ground deer for chili and meat sauce as did the sheriff. They never had any issues with game wardens, maybe due to being so close to town. (40 miles west of Nashville.)
Down in SW Texas (Uvalde area), a friend had a neighbor who worked on a huge ranch over 1000 acres.
Every employee was required to harvest 20 deer a year.
My friend had to buy 3 freezers to store meat. He gave away meat constantly.
If you keep chest freezers packed full, they use less power to stay cold

No need to buy more strawberries. They send out shoots that you can cut or let grow in place, thus increasing the total number of plants and produce.
Thanks for the trip! We have only grown strawberries once before so we are excited to try different techniques and see what works!
A few things…you’ll want to succession sow some of those peppers and tomatoes, in the event that pests get to them. Starting seeds again in a couple of weeks will help. There’s also companion planting like adding marigolds, basil and nasturtiums to keep pests away, etc. You’re not too late to put potatoes in the ground. You can also start sweet potatoes. We don’t grow slips, rather just place them on the soil, exposing part of them, not completely planting them underground like regular potatoes. You’re off to a good start. Keep up the good work. Even if you don’t get great harvests, you’re learning for next year and building soil.
Scarecrow will not keep deer out and goats can climb a fence unless electric. Really enjoy your show
If you have a lot of birds, consider putting a mesh net over your strawberries otherwise the birds will eat them. Love how your container gardens turned out.
Grew up with my grandparents running a small fruit market along the highway about 7 miles away from their farm. I’m 65 now but I was working at the market at 4, lol (child labor) 😅. I absolutely loved it and the people who bought loved me toting cantaloupes to their cars for them. My job at the farm was the strawberry fields. Grandma would give me quart baskets and say “ don’t come back without all these full” but it would take me HOURS to bring them back to her. She always said that it took me forever because I ate 5 to 1 in the baskets. I actually developed “strawberry mouth” 😂. I still could live on strawberry’s 🍓 🍓🍓🍓

As long as you too young people are able to do what you're doing I think that's absolutely wonderful I think being the active is healthy for you if you can do it as long as you don't overdo it but I'm proud of you for accomplishing so much and I think along with a few problems you'll have a lot of reward and benefits from it physically mentally all the way around thanks for sharing this video with us wishing you guys the best
If you tie twinkly things...CD's, mylar ribbon, or even old ballon....on the top wire of your fence, it will help deter the deer a little more.

An interesting thing I learned is keep sweet peppers and spicy peppers they will cross pollinate. You will get a great smelling sweet pepper that is hot as the spicy planted to close together.

run w the irrigation idea. a 500' spool of the .710 inch line is like 50 bucks. if yer tanks high enough u can gravity feed each bed where you could rig a shutoff valve but then later yer main lines already there when u get say a well pump and pressure tank. i would also have a fairly detailed plan to get water weather by rain or u picking it up. its hard on yer truck to put a tote in it over and over. a tote on a trailer is best if arraigned right.i use a 5th custom trailer on my f150 so all it does is pull instead of all that weight on the suspension
Tanks for the tips! A proper irrigation system like you explain is definitely in our plan - it will just likely be an improvement for next year. For water we plan to be all rain collection as of now. I'm looking to get another 2 totes soon. Going to rig one under the 2 metal sheds we put up so we can collect from several points - have also thought of setting some collection off the solar array but that it another future improvement idea. Lots of steps! lol.
The strawberry garden you should plant them at 6 to 8 inches apart so they germinate at the roots. I ve been growing strawberry plants for years I've even planted them at 4 inches apart and let me tell you they are the biggest, sweetest berrys you will ever eat or can up.

That’s a very nice area. Your about 1hr45 min from us. Defiantly garden, it’s the only way to go!
Might I suggest using strawberry grow bags, that will save you a ton of room and each bag has pouches on the sides where you can plant a total of 7 or 8 plants per bag, that what I use and it makes taking care of them so much easier
Not sure if your looking for alternative ways of preserving some of the harvest but my grandmother would string green beans to dry for later use. If interested sesrch leather britches or shucky beans . She strung the whole bean pod on lenghts of thread and hung them to dry and stored them in paper bags . Then she just put them in water and cooked till tender. With plenty of seasoning . They were very good, in my opinion.

having been raising my garden from seed every year my experience is, what can eat your garden will. LOL Kale is my fav, tomatoes are second! love organic veggies! it takes a few years to get organized but y'all are young and have time!
i would start checking local 2nd hand stores. ive found all kind of stuff like vacum sealers,canning jars,electric dehydrators,bread makers etc. that stuff does get expensive if buying new. plus you might consider looking up online the plans for a small solar powered dehydrator.there easy to build and can dehydrate stuff well for use in the winter when yer making alot of soups and stews. just toss in a pot w water
It's such a good idea - we found a ton of Ball jars at a thrift back in the winter for a pretty good price - just haven't gone back to get them. Love the idea of a solar powered dehydrator! Will definitely give a look into that.

yep on the store produce. used to v they picked em green then after they loaded the trailer they flooded if w a gas to hasten the ripening process while they drove to the store where it was ripe when unloaded.

Afids love the brassicas such as kolrobi. Major spelling errors lol. I have not learned how to control them. I am in Washington so it may be different in TN. Enjoy
You should check out the mennonite store near Sweetwater. They have a lot of plants in their greenhouse and great fresh vegetables
Hügelkultur beds, love it. Rhubarb, Raspberries, and apples. The first three things you should plant, they are immortal.

With where we are at in the Solar Cycle, be prepared to use both frost and shade cloths over hoops on your beds. Good Job.

So just a thought you should widen path on the 2 sides to run tractors or even the truck to drive down so you would not have to walk back and forth to trailer now and in future when you amend the soil each or every other year would be a back saver do a double gate door at each end

Look forward to seeing your raised beds produce. My third year of nine raised beds and one in ground bed. Well first year with the in ground watermelon and cantaloupe beds. About to add a 8x16 greenhouse. I freeze dry watermelon. Makes great snacks. Keep on gardening.

I'm sure you already know, but a word of caution. Be very careful with your canning as improperly canned foods can be a very bad thing.

If you can afford to put a second fence two arms out from the first they wont jump in between both fences

I have missed a couple shows due to my mom dying recently, so I have some catching up to do. You guys amaze me on how fast you are approaching a life fully under your own control.
My brother puts up fishing line to keep deer out of his garden. They can't see it to know to jump over it. They push up against it and then just move around the area. If they don't know your garden is there they have no motivation to think about it. Just be careful to not put the fishing line at a height where it will catch you if you forget it is there.

Surprised that nobody has mentioned adding worms to every bed...but having a smaller bed that's just a worm farm.
Contact a local bait shop and get their worm supplier. They can get you bulk deals on baby worms and ideas to farm your own worms.
I know...something else to research.

Taking it day by day! veggie by veggie lol.
Go to town, find the Italian area, find the oldest gardener and plant what he plants. If its fall buy/beg him for 1 tomato and one pepper. Those seeds are priceless.
With the spare branches you fill the bottom layer of your beds, it will save you money and the branches will break down and nourish the soil and the plants
Think about how you are going to preserve each vegetable and where you are going to store them!
We jar our Kale and use it in soups during the winter. Spinach we can jar or freeze. Freezing is easy but in a off grid situation might not be the best option.
Tomatoes we jar. We also take most of our tomatoes and make salsa or spaghetti sauce out of since that is what we use the most of. We jar tomatoes for chili or soups.
Corn we jar.
Pumpkin we both freeze and jar. Different processes for the different type of preserving.
We pickle Onions, Cucumbers and Zucchini.
We don't grow beans! I don't like them and I am the gardener. Too many days in the hot summer sun at my parents house, picking beans in the morning and snipping beans in the afternoon!
Strawberries take up a lot of room. We prefer Blackberries. Deer don't eat them so you can put them out in your pasture.
You will develop a list of your go to plant (seeds). It just takes time and experience.
Get drip irrigation hoses, build a platform before the water tank, then let the water flow with self-pressure to the crops
To deter deer, Place poles outside your fence about 3 feet. String a very thin strong string or wire about chest high to a deer. This was first tested in Montana I believe. Apparently deer do not see the wire or string, get concerned and will not jump the regular fence. It worked very well for me to get cherry trees growing.

The produce available in the grocery store is bread for long shelf life and durability in shipping. It is not bread for taste. You two have the right Idea of growing your own.
Kholrabi. Khol is cabbage in German Rabbi is turnip, cabbage -turnip. I agree they are delicious. My favorite way is to slice them and ferment with pickle spices! Youall should plant Blackberries, easy to grow and an abundant harvest rapidly. The garden is looking good!
You can put vine plants on the side of the bed train to go over side and give you more room in the center of bed done it and works

Hello 👋 friends, from west Tennessee. First of all, congratulations on getting your beautiful piece of property in Tennessee. I have found that if you string a single strand of string, marking ribbon, baling twine, even a wire approximately 18 to twenty four inches outside of your existing garden fence, the deer have bad depth perception and won’t try to jump the fence. Are all those different varieties grown in your area? You need to find stuff that works in the area you're in. And don't overplant because you will waste a lot. I know I've done it.

Are some of your raised beds galvanized? if so acidic soil will become contaminated not healthy wood chips are acidic
Those metal garden beds look expensive.
Those strawberries will grow FAST.. The plants you have will fill that bed in no time.

Do ya'll accept visitors for like a Friday night or Saturday night over-night visit? i am a subscriber to your channel.. (I have jeep gladiator set up for overlanding, with roof top tent, so i am self contained, just need some semi-flat ground). As a fellow Tennessee resident, albeit in the extreme south west corner of our state, (Memphis)t, and a fan of what you guys are trying to accomplish (similar to what i want to do), i would love to come up there for an over night visit, to fellowship, bounce ideas back and forth, and just hang out for a day, (and pitch in with some chores or projects if ya need another set of hands)... let me know if this is acceptable or too forward...no worries either way...peace, love, and further accomplishments towards your goal....
Strawberries are picked fresh, and they are gassed with a growth retardant. How do I know this? I hauled produce from CA to SC every week for a year. Oranges are picked green, bleached, and then dyed orange.
