    We are getting the keys for our first owned home this Friday. It's a small space, but well laid out. Our living room has a kitchen along one wall, floor to ceiling windows along the opposite wall and 85% windows on the wall in between. Leaving us one available solid wall. This wall is already painted a gorgeous rich teal. So we plan to keep it and add a wall unit of partially open and closed storage spaces, in white and pale grey (the kitchen units are pale grey. I plan to make the bedroom feature wall a rich royal blue and then use both of these colours as accents throughout the apartment. I'm learning how to properly prepare and paint walls, as well as appropriate ways to clean and dispose of paint once finished. It's exciting. There are many tips in this video I have already used while selecting furninshings, though we are sticking with a "bulky" sofa bed (with storage!), so we have space if a friend/family visits.

    As someone who kept moving everything around for years in my entire flat before finding a configuration that felt right, i say: don't hesitate to put your shelves, sofa(s), tables, rugs, plants... in weird places. It won't work most of the time, but for all the times it will you might stumble on something that fits you perfectly and sets the tone of a room. (And then you'll find a new armchair and have to move it all again; that's the game ;b )

    I feel like choosing between hinge doors and sliding doors are essentially choosing between less wall space and less floor space. Choose sliding doors and you'll have to leave an equal wall space empty for it to slide open. Choose swing doors and you'll have to leave a radius of its width for floor clearance. Accordian doors or bifold door or even narrow french doors might be a good middle ground. Plus their load on the hinges would be better distributed.

      Nothing wrong with a blank wall, maybe use an accent paint color for that wall behind the door? Maybe a shade darker than the color you are using in the rest of the room.

    • @l.5832
      @l.5832 2 года назад

      My last home had a pocket door to the ensuite. Constantly had to be adjusted or it would bind or not be square when closed. I also resented the forced blank wall next to it as it would have been a perfect place to hang a picture because the adjacent wall was mostly all glass window.

    • @Alicia-ij6gt
      @Alicia-ij6gt Год назад

      An internal sliding door or pocket door doesn’t force the adjacent wall space to be empty. It just means it can’t be heavy. You can still stand something on the floor, or use lightweight hangers for posters, even framed posters.

    I live in a small apartment and I selected a wallpaper that was just a bit darker than the white ceiling, that made the room look a bit taller, I also left a thin white line between the ceiling and the wallpaper, that made the corners to look a bit softer, so at 4:38 I miss the darker walls with a 'white' line at the top to raise and expand the ceiling.
    Great tips btw, and good video.

    Own under 400 ft2 apartment. And that mirror tip is my favorite. I have such mirror not even for looking as its on a shelf in the kitchen area opposite the window. There are few bottles in front of it and it remind me of the old west bar mirror. Also i have no wall mounted shelfs or furniture that go up the the ceiling so the room is very open at the head area. Same reasoning and effect as furniture with legs which i also have mainly by accident. Even my kitchen counter is on legs and as its made from stainless it also work as a mirror as well.

    Would love a vid on lighting in the bedroom; specifically, curtains. I’m having a hard time finding how to block light at night and have the curtains look cohesive with a relatively light colour pallette.

    • @sahrishrizvi7610
      @sahrishrizvi7610 2 года назад +4

      You can layer light blocking (thick) curtains on the outside of the window with flowy sheer curtains on the inside, both in light shades. And keep the curtain rods to go longer than the window as he said in the video. This way, you can pull the thick curtains all the way out and use the sheer ones during the day for a light and airy feel, and use the thick ones to block light at night, with the sheer ones bunched at the centre.

    ...I'm one of those who thinks that minimalism has several levels that go from basic minimalism to the extreme, in which it's all about simplifying even the most recondite square centimeter. Using multifunctional furniture is a way to simplify everything, because in many cases you don't need to have three pieces of furniture but one or two (for example, sleeping on a sofa bed that you can use during the day as a seat and during the day as a bed, and so on). I'm not a big fan of multifunctional furniture but I recognize the high utility that they can mean. My current sofa is a Togo sofa from Manhattan Home Design, and although it isn't as multifunctional as other models, it still seems quite minimalist to me. Thanks for all these tips!
