This was really helpful! I had just about stopped using my cable setup because of all of these issues. I ordered the pulleys you suggested and will be making some of the other changes too. Thanks!
That means so much thank you! Believe it or not I had you in mind when I was making this video. Your cables are going to be amazing! Let me know how it turns out!
Awesome video, what if I already have everything but the plastic housing started cracking. Should I just cut the plastic off. If I do is there a plastic housing to put back on?
@@victorb1782 Thank you! Are you saying the plastic housing on the cable is cracking? If you cut it off there is no way to put any back on, you'd have to replace the cable. The cracks are showing it is aging a bit. It's usually just cosmetic but I like to replace my cables every year or 2 to keep them fresh looking since I use them heavily.
I did a diy cable system for flys to my existing cable system. It works really well at the top. My low pulleys keep having the cable slip off the channel before I can pull any weight. I have the same black pulleys you suggest here. Any recommendations on a solution to keep the cables on the pulley wheel?
@@robertlevesque830Yes I can offer some tips! It might sound counter intuitive but the bolt that goes through the pulley housing, I loosed that bolt enough that only 1-1.5 thread is poking out from the bolt and that made a big difference! Also being sure to pull the cable at ground level till there is tension before moving the handle up helps too. I hope those make sense.
Good information. Instead of your screw to hold the low cable off the floor, just get a magnetic hook. They're more than strong enough, and you don't have to make holes in your rack.
How about the structure of the wire itself, for example (7x7 vs 7x19), which one is best for consistency of movements in your opinion 🤔 7x19 is more flexible 7x7 is slightly more rigid
Another good tip is to have a shorter cable with a length of chain attached to the loading pin so you can make adjustments without messing around with the cable u bolt !
That is a great idea! Then you can have an adjustable length cable. With that setup do you notice the weight swinging less? Since you have more weight on the cable I would guess it's more stable. Thank you for sharing! 💪
is it normal for a cable to get wear and tear just bought a multi gym a week ago and the cable is starting to go already after increasing the weight i was thinking i diddnt set it up correctly as it rubbing off a bolt
@@irishakita1782 Hey! It sounds like the rubbing on the bolt is wearing it out super fast. Cables do wear but they should last years instead of weeks. You can get replacement cables on hardware stores or Amazon if it's already needing replaced.
@@SelfBuilt damn that was a quick reply 😂 appreciate it man you have a new follower, i have the cable running under the bolt will try put it in a new position tomorrow thanks!
@@irishakita1782 Thank you I appreciate it! I try to be responsive 😂 If it's possible try a different location or this is just a shot in the dark. Would turning the bolt around help avoid the cable? Good luck to you!
Mate, it can't be beyond your wit and innovation to fix that pulley sled. You could even build a new one from scratch and mount it on the original housing. The get removable locking collars that tighten with an alan key to go on the weight pins then that's all your pulley needs focused into the one area. The side pulley wheels attach top and bottom to rack with soft loop tie-downs.
Thank you I'm sure it can be done. With the angle of my top and bottom pulleys it would have a lot of binding. I'd have to move my top pulleys close together and would lose the ability to connect my lower pulleys. Perhaps I can modify the lat pulldown setup but then would have to remove my double landmine attachment. It's not really in the cards for my current setup but I do like your idea! With these 3 fixes my pulleys are darn near perfect 😁
@@SelfBuilt Me too! I'd have it done by now I had a drill press and a mitre saw, and nice flush lumber but all the wood and pipes are out of skips and it's hand tools only. I have 3 layers of 16mm plywood gluing under all my concrete weights on my kitchen counter top as we speak. Eventually got the holes perfectly aligned to create a 45° and 15° pad angle ala Sorinex spec. Thinking of putting the pad on a hinge to allow for any angle of use, would just need various angle wedges to support it. Should be done over the weekend, I'll let you know. Also on with making jammer arms and a lateral raise machine all out of scrap wood.
@@SelfBuilt Right I see. My side pulleys are attached to the rack with soft loops straps and I don't seem to get any binding. I think it's because the straps are quite long and they shift and twist to the correct angle. If they were fused against lateral movements I'm sure they wouldn't work.
@@RickRubinesque wow that's awesome! You are on a roll with building some good stuff! For sure let me know how they all turn out! I've thought about a lateral raise attachment and haven't gone too far with it since I would attach it to a side of my rack and the walls are pretty tight to them. Maybe the idea will hit me or once I have more room available I'll be able to make one.
@@michaelnelson813 Great question. I just checked and the link I had in the description doesn't seem to work anymore. I did end up just buying the pulley and housing separate. I just used the housing from a smaller pulley that I already had.
What setup would you like to see next?
This is the best diy pulley advice I've seen on you tube. I'm considering doing this except using accessory cord rope instead of a steel cable.
Thank you so much! I bet rope is very durable and they can have strong weight limits too. If you go that route let me know how they turn out!
YES, Mr. Self Built, GR8 recommendations ! Quality first.
Thanks man, much appreciated!

That's a great idea. Where do you get ones that strong? I'll have to use that on my future one probably since I've already got a hole.

7x19 is more flexible
7x7 is slightly more rigid
That's an excellent question. Let me check and see what I've been using. Initially I'd like more flexibility for smoothness and less weight swing.

What size are the bolts you used to connect the swivel pulley to the top crossmember of your rack?
They are a 3/8 bolt 4 inches long. I have some washers on the nut side too
