I will most certainly give Lumo a go when I travel up to Scotland, it looked like a wonderful ride and the price is unbeatable I would say! Thanks so much Dylan.😉👍🏻
It's worth noting that in order to pass the Department for Transport's tests to ensure they don't abstract revenue from LNER, Lumo's competitors are officially easyJet and British Airways. Seems like they're doing a good job there in terms of both price and comfort!
Why doesn't it stop at Doncaster? There's an airport there. Just checked on a return flight £435. Sure LNER will be beating flight prices even from Edinburgh and Newcastle.
Apparently Lumo isn't allowed to call at York for revenue abstraction reasons, in a similar way that Avanti is pick-up only northbound and set-down only southbound at Watford Junction, and that Wrexham & Shropshire was at Wolverhampton.
Is it Tuesday ? What a treat Dylan....another excellent report and interesting to see fewer facemasks ! Now perhaps for the old like me an awayday Edinburgh and back with Lumo might be a fun idea !
Great video as usual Dylan. Those standard class seats look much better than the rest of the Class 8xx seats which will be a massive selling point in my opinion.
It looks an impressive train. For a 4 hour journey I would always prefer to travel first class, with more space and a calmer atmosphere, but it comes at a cost. It's difficult to see how Lumo can provide the service at the current price. How long will such low fares continue?
Ask Ryanair! That being said, I looked at Edinburgh-London for a trip and there was nothing lower than £69, no better than LNER, as all the cheap seats had been snapped up. Again, similar to Ryanair.
A few points.... 1. Really quite liking the new voice over style. 2. Good luck getting those priced tickets anytime soon. 3. Always found predominantly airline style seats as in the voyages quite claustrophobic but the seat design looks good. 3. A very comprehensive review. Food offering looks lite but then I can't remember last time I bought anything on the train so probably fit for purpose. 4. Finally... Lets get Dylan more subscribers so he gets an invite on any future media trains. He could have got bagpipes and canapes on Thursday
Wow....it's hard getting my head around so many different rail operators in one country ! In Australia, each state has just their own government owned network. Interstate trains are joint funded ( except for the likes of The Ghan, and The Indian-Pacific)
Well, joint but badly funded whilst the tourist trains you mentioned are very expensive. 200kph.....we dont get even half of that and it is a very big country.
The initial idea was that private companies would run services for profit meaning no more Government subsidies. Unfortunately that didn't quite happen and they ended up paying out more in subsidies! In fact it's getting to the point where most of franchises are now Goverment owned and ran.
My biggest gripe on my first trip on one was the little tables were too low for tall people which meant I couldn’t put it flat. The second observation was the tinted glass things were stupidly reflective which made it very easy for people to read your messages etc from the seats behind. But for the price not bad
Travelling on the same train in May, really helpful tips and seems like the best option from edinburgh to london. Looking forward to our train journey now
Very good appraisal. Of course, services on that line (and all others) are at the mercy of Network Rail. If it decides to do a bit of weekend maintenance, chaos usually prevails. I would definitely use Lumor. With the right timetable it could become a major commuter service.
Great video. I agree about having a better system for selecting seats when booking as in your case you ended up with an iasle seat. Even if you get a window seat the chances are you'd end up in one of those spaces between windows where you can't see a thing outside or worse still one of the seats at the end of the coach where there are no windows. What it needs is a diagram of the coach and where the windows are situated so you can select a proper window seat. This is also the case in standard class on all the other operators. Its probably not an issue for those who like to read or watch entertainment throughout the journey but I like to watch the scenery pass by. Apart from that it looks great and am tempted to give it a try at some point.
Great video! I was also on that train between Edinburgh and Newcastle. With railcard, I was only £6-40 day return. However....these cheap introductory fares are only until the end of November, and all the London tickets are gone before the first service ran. Going forward, the extra capacity can only pull fares down, so great that Scotland has its first open access operation! But its not Britain's first low cost operator. Have you never heard of Grand Central? I have to mention more downsides. Your video showed the overhead luggage racks absolutely crammed, as the floor level luggage racks are so few. No wonder they don't mention the bulky luggage areas as these would be overwhelmed. Not all of us are still young enough to lift heavy luggage onto the overhead racks. The catering needs an uplift, and for me the lack of any buffet counter and the need to pre-order most of it is a serious step back. Not being able to choose your seat is a big one for some of us. I think it was East Coast who introduced this many years ago, when it was first re-nationalised. But I plan to do a few more cheapo day returns to Newcastle while it lasts.
Fantastic Video 😃! Unfortunately, the price that you paid for your ticket was only a special offer lasting until 1st December. After that, the prices are very similar to LNER. I'm very keen to travel with Lumo and your video has made me really want to travel with them! I do wish that they had a seat map though which would be really good so that you know which seats are Window seats.
Really? This isn’t genuine competition by any means. I live in Scotland. I go from Aberdeen to Newark Northgate. While I can go into Kings Cross this then means I have to go across to St Pancres station and get another train. Not only is this more expense, it difficult for me to get access to the train at the others stations as I have mobility problems. So unless they increase there stops, this is no use for me. And I’m sure I’m not the only one.
What a great video. Not seen any of your other content, but I'm looking forward to taking a look. Your video has made me want to book with Lumo and visit Edinburgh.

Open access really has been a success story on the East Coast Main Line. I'm all for scrapping the franchise system, but one pro of the last couple decades has been allowing open access. It's a shame it's hasn't expanded to other intercity routes.
I saw my first one whizzing (well, kind of) through York on Saturday. It looked good in its blue colour. But it was strange to see a train actually not stop in York :(
You don't know what an absolute disgrace is until you see the antiqued rusting disgusting rail transit service in the USA.....we are more than 30 -40 yrs behind......and rail service not available to most of all the country....we depend on cars...
Road with lumo this weekend. Did enjoy it. Staff where super nice and Chatty. Seating was alright. Only gripe train was half hour late and because it will most likely always be busy, can't really get a seat alone.
You managed to get this edited quickly - nice one! I'll be uploading mine later this week, maybe today. Glad we've drawn the same general conclusions on this service - well done Lumo! Oh, and I too booked a window seat and found it was an aisle seat... Must be an issue in the reservations system I guess.
I happened to watch today's departure from Newcastle just before 11am as I awaited the LNER service. My impression was that these 5 coaches were very crowded with people standing... and that would be all the way to King's Cross as it was not stopping anywhere else. That did not seem a comfortable experience for anyone in the coaches and I was surprised you could apparently board without a seat reservation. When I use LNER I bite the bullet and go 1st Class because you have more space (the complimentary snacks are pretty poor) and the fact that there is no premium carriage on the Lumo service is unfortunate. If you would usually travel standard and don't mind very full coaches and little by way of on board food options in exchange for a cheaper priced ticket then I can see the appeal - to go direct from Newcastle to London without three or four additional stops is a definite bonus. If you like more space on a long journey then it is not going to tempt me. How narrow are those arm rests?!
I travel from KGX NCL every three months and have done the journey in first class for over 20 years now. The standard of service has deteriorated progressively over those years and is almost non-existent now. In three weeks time I am booked with Lumo as an experiment! At a price less than one quarter of my usual fare, I can take my own better food and champagne and still save!
Hi Dylan, there is no First Class and no Cafe Bar buffet counter aboard Lumo Hitachi Class 803 trains. The interior layout of the seating seems to virtually be the same as First Great Western/GWR former High Density Mark 3 trailer vehicles in the High Speed Train/InterCity 125 sets. It is nice to finally see an improved seat design aboard the Hitachi Class 800 family. Best wishes and take care. Kind regards, Peter Skuce, St Albans. Hertfordshire.
I know it's a high speed service, but it's a shame it doesn't stop in York of Leeds. I mean, if anybody is going to appreciate a budget train service, it's a Yorkshireman like me!
I travel rarely enough on the train that I prefer to go First class, so LNER is probably still the better option for me. That said, if I find myself needing to travel on short notice then I suspect Lumo will get my custom. It's just a shame they don't stop at either Peterborough or Stevenage at the other end since it makes travelling to East Anglia a lot easier.
Although they are allowed to take passengers from LNER at both termini as customers have a free choice who they book with. Seems a petty regulation to me.
I think it's great that they stop in Morpeth. It is a town that despite being on the ECML has had a rather poor rail service for years. The fact that both these and TPE are now providing additional services between Newcastle and Morpeth must further open up the possibly of commuting between these places by train and taking some cars off the roads.
@@Lakesider52 That's the rules for open access operators, they have to be mainly offering something new rather than simply cherry-picking profitable times to take passengers away from existing services. It's why Hull Trains calls at smaller towns like Grantham but not at Peterborough which is much bigger. The number of LNER passengers going all the way from London to Edinburgh is fairly small compared with the number making shorter journeys, but even so I'm quite surprised that ORR felt Lumo was offering something sufficiently different to give them a licence.
I went to Edinburgh for my holiday on Halloween week. On the last day (today) I went to York when i was heading back home. When I was walking to the Railway Musuem I saw a Lumo class 800 pass by.

Wrexham, Shropshire and MaryleboneRailway £20 to London. Sabotaged by Virgin.
Lumo is privately owned ain't it?
London overground is owned by TFL thats ran by the government.
hi so nice to see the trains full again, i can not see how lumo can fail.great video as always.brian d
I will most certainly give Lumo a go when I travel up to Scotland, it looked like a wonderful ride and the price is unbeatable I would say! Thanks so much Dylan.😉👍🏻
Plenty of railfans for the first trip between London and Edimburgh.
Great, that you now talk to the videos. That makes watching much more relaxing. I love it.
It's worth noting that in order to pass the Department for Transport's tests to ensure they don't abstract revenue from LNER, Lumo's competitors are officially easyJet and British Airways. Seems like they're doing a good job there in terms of both price and comfort!
The railways were privatized to create comptetion and drive fares down, but now Lumo isn't allowed to compete with LNER! Crazy.
Why doesn't it stop at Doncaster? There's an airport there. Just checked on a return flight £435. Sure LNER will be beating flight prices even from Edinburgh and Newcastle.
@@ClintonBaptiste.Clairevoyant maybe we simply just wait and see what the future holds.
i plan on trying Lumo next year once they've got a more settled service, they certainly look and sound good
Apparently Lumo isn't allowed to call at York for revenue abstraction reasons, in a similar way that Avanti is pick-up only northbound and set-down only southbound at Watford Junction, and that Wrexham & Shropshire was at Wolverhampton.
I wonder if that would be the same for Leeds.
Is it Tuesday ? What a treat Dylan....another excellent report and interesting to see fewer facemasks ! Now perhaps for the old like me an awayday Edinburgh and back with Lumo
might be a fun idea !
Slick train. Hopefully I'll get there to try it myself. Awesome narration. Thanks Dylan!
Thanks a lot for this one, Dylan. Excellent topic & photography - I particularly appreciated your spoken commentary / script. It was just right!
It's only low because of advance tickets.
Ask Ryanair! That being said, I looked at Edinburgh-London for a trip and there was nothing lower than £69, no better than LNER, as all the cheap seats had been snapped up. Again, similar to Ryanair.
4 hours is ok in these seats as long as you don't have to catch an event right after you land.
Good to Hear you again mate. I am certainly interested to see how Lumo do in the coming future.
Great commentary with just the right amount of detailed information of the places you pass on the way.
Looking forward to our train journey now
A wonderful train ride and as always love the narrated videos
They do look the part. Easy on the eye, and the wallet!
Also, you’re smashing the transition to on-screen and voice over work. Killing it!
Brilliant review, Dylan! Very thorough. Thinking of travelling with Lumo in the future.
another awesome presentation. must admit I do use these for when I make my own travel plans
It's beautiful blue color ! 💖✨
It looks so comfortable ! 👍
Such a "Japanese" style to the front.
Great video! I'm excited to see how the other operators respond to genuine competition.
And I’m sure I’m not the only one.
sounds like a great train looks clean and comfortabl e nice sceenery on the way stay safe and well buddy cheers
What a great video. Not seen any of your other content, but I'm looking forward to taking a look. Your video has made me want to book with Lumo and visit Edinburgh.
Love these vlog videos Dylan. I hope you do much more of them in the future. 👍
Haven't watched your videos for months but I'm back
Almost at 100k mate! 😎 Keep em coming!
Hello my dear friend I am here, arriving for strengthen our frienfships and To know your wonderful Channel.
Thank you for sharing beautiful work. This is a vídeo very important, excellent and Nice filming.
Great and wonderful Works.
We are together Strong hug from Brazil
Open access really has been a success story on the East Coast Main Line. I'm all for scrapping the franchise system, but one pro of the last couple decades has been allowing open access. It's a shame it's hasn't expanded to other intercity routes.
I always enjoy your videos. Nice relaxing commentary, thanks.
Great video mate. Normally, LumO trains use to call at Stevenage but yeah that's very strange through and so many people are on lumO
I saw my first one whizzing (well, kind of) through York on Saturday. It looked good in its blue colour. But it was strange to see a train actually not stop in York :(
Looks like a great experience. I'm Canadian but I will 100% travel on this line when I'm in the UK next year.
I WAS THERE! I was completely oblivious of this until I arrived at kings cross just before 11 and saw all the press and a shiny new train.
Great vlog Dylan and nice to see you. Would be great if you could review more first class train journeys sometime, budget permitting, just to compare.
Great video 👍 , maybe something like this is now needed for the cross-country service which is an absolute disgrace
You don't know what an absolute disgrace is until you see the antiqued rusting disgusting rail transit service in the USA.....we are more than 30 -40 yrs behind......and rail service not available to most of all the country....we depend on cars...
@@mariabetancourt6797 Luckily your petrol is cheap enough to do long distances. Its ridiculous here in the UK.
Road with lumo this weekend. Did enjoy it.
Staff where super nice and Chatty. Seating was alright.
Only gripe train was half hour late and because it will most likely always be busy, can't really get a seat alone.
i had no idea this new company existed and now I am going to plan a trip on one!!
Great to see you unmasked. I have never been up to surface level at Waverley, always just been passing through.
To overcome this, you probably have to book an aisle and get a window seat.
You have to book in reverse when it comes to trains, if you want a window backward facing seat, book an Isle forward facing seat
Ditto as i said already george hudson would turn in his grave knowing trains do not stop at york.Fellow yorkie too.
York seems a more logical stopping point than Morpeth
From Leeds, take the short hop to Doncaster, then jump on to Grand Central.
Yes
I came here about 2 months ago when lumo wasent there it was brilliant
I travel rarely enough on the train that I prefer to go First class, so LNER is probably still the better option for me. That said, if I find myself needing to travel on short notice then I suspect Lumo will get my custom. It's just a shame they don't stop at either Peterborough or Stevenage at the other end since it makes travelling to East Anglia a lot easier.
Thought they always stopped at Stevenage (though not as often as the other stops)?
Another great video Dylan. Saw this unit passing Northallerton
Thanks, Dylan, for a nice little trip.
7:03, BYE BYE!!! I WEELY MISS YOUW... XD Wow what a nice dad.
Excellent report and very good commentary.
Great vid thanks Dylan and great to see your face as well!
Fun to see a Tuesday (US) Inaugural Service bonus edition 🙂
Looks to be a great service. Morpeth seems like an odd place to stop. Can see me using it for my next trip to Newcastle.
My thoughts entirely. Why stop at a tiny town of just 14,000? Perhaps it's due to an obscure regulation/condition of operating license.
@@Lakesider52 They're not allowed to take passengers from LNER
Love these new videos. The voice over and seeing your face makes it more personal and I think friendly. Plus I think your video content is much better now too. Keep up the good work. I travel on lner from Doncaster to kings cross occasionally. But the ticket cost is astronomical.
