Using M&S food makes perfect sense as you are plugging into an organisation that is delivering a quality and level of choice in far greater volumes than a relatives small train operator could ever command, thus offering a much more reliable supply.
I think Lumo is gonna attract lots of passengers, as their trains are a massive step up to Lner small touches like the reading light above the seat table is lovely. Nice lumo! Thanks for the review albs!
As one of five who semi-frequently travels to Dundee to visit relatives, this is a game-changer. Ticket prices for five of us have always been annoying, and the level of comfort offered on these trains seems to be far better than that of LNER. It would be far cheaper for us to get a Lumo service to Waverley, and then complete the last hour leg to Dundee with Scotrail.
Low cost carries are always appreciated and Lumo, for now ticks all the boxes in terms of service and comfort nevertheless, let's observe how long they will be able to maintain the price, service and comfort.
I love and hate Europe. I was fascinated by the stunning scenery and rich history, but I was overwhelmed by the high cost. I think TRIP's discount coupon saved me.
Due to a bug, Morpeth is the only station that generates lumo departures on google maps. I think the purpose of Morpeth is for passengers getting picked up, and driver’s convenience. Morpeth is the closest station to the motorway, at least in the north. It also allows drivers to bypass all the Newcastle traffic to board/disembark lumo trains without first taking another train to Newcastle, and changing there.
The Morpeth stop could also be to do with timetable paths allowing different train speeds and spacing on the line to maintain the fastest journey times of trains with different stopping patterns. This occurs on busy long double track sections which don't allow for overtaking as on three or four track sections. This prevents faster trains having to slow down if they catch up with a slower train ahead. Morpeth also has a severe speed restriction on its curve, the scene of several derailments in the past.
Ended up being recommended this today. I recently did my first journey on the operator. As with all AT-300s, the train is not one I want to like, but when its valued so low in ticket price, and is the best seating the type has in the UK, despite no First Class being provided, it speaks volumes. Then again, when you refuse to let the DfT affect your interior (because they spec'd the 803s to be the same as the others initially, but Lumo wanted better), that's what happens. But I wanted to say, you hit the nail on the head when you said how Lumo clearly understand what passengers WANT from a train service. That is something I think should be adopted by all TOCs, rather than charging folks upwards of 150 quid for on the day returns across the UK, when that could get you a month's travel in Europe
Your videos are so much improved by voice over , it allows the subscriber to fully concentrate on watching the action instead of being distracted by reading the screen words .
personally i prefer with subtitles because i find the station and train sounds extremely relaxing (and as i’m not english i understand way much better when i read)
I used Lumo in January 2024 when visiting Newcastle. Sure enough, the lack of luggage luggage space seemed to be an issue. The train filled almost to capacity at Kings Cross, being a detriment to the trains short length, but the shortage of space for luggage nearly resulted in fisticuffs breaking out between other passengers over the use of the luggage space. Credit to the onboard staff though, they resolved the situation, as far as I could tell
Another lovely, professionally done video. You do a wonderful job of covering all the options for services offered and more. Thank you so much for creating these videos!
You answered your own question about why it stops at Morpeth. There is easy access to Newcastle airport, with the alternative being a stopping train to Newcastle and changing to LNER.
I presume it also provided part of the case for it creating enough business in its own right (rather than simply off LNER) to be greenlit, a barrier that has blocked some other planned open access operators.
Thank you for a great review. Very glad you found the seats in the Lumo Class 803 so much better than in a LNER Azuma. Those seats are disgusting, and a real let down for such a long distance train. The Lumo fares sound very good also, and I hope they succeed.
It's good to see that lumo got the seats right. I like the class 800s/802s in some ways, but the seats really let them down, despite fire regulations, good seats are still possible. The other day when I was coming back to Bath from London, the little cushioning in the seat has pretty much collapsed, leaving me with hard horizontal bar pressing into my thighs. Come on GWR, sort it out!
@@SuperalbsTravels though I think the choice to order 5 coach trains is questionable to say the least. GWR short-forms trains heading out of London quite a lot and this is very annoying. It also limits they're room to grow and it seems like a short-term cost-cut which could easily come back to bite them when they can't capitalize on as much of the market as they would otherwise be able to. I wish there was an open access operator operating along the Great Western Mainline, GWR is one of the most expensive operators and while it's not the worst, I think it's a below average service
09:26 The extendable seat back table, reading light, power socket and coat hanger are really thoughtful features and i love them.. seats look okay too. I always look for coat hanger for my jacket/coat. I guess to get some peth the train stops at Morepeth because it has more of it than others.
Lumo is operated by First Group who already run (badly) the services on teh West Coast Main Line (& TPE) - they will hardly start a service in competition to themselves
Did you travel with Dylan? The opening photography was nearly identical to his video which was released yesterday. I also recognize the parent telling their child to say bye bye to Edinburgh.
Excellent vlog Albs, the train is much better than the other 800 versions around the country. Enjoyed your comment about the rain in Yorkshire, (aimed at Dylan no doubt ) You managed to avoid each other on this train. (ha ha) I support you both and great to see a face and hear a voice. Well Done.
Good video & featured what looks like a grand service . I was surprised by the low price of the journey & impressed by the offerings on board . Look forward to seeing some more videos .
Great video. The Lumo 803’s certainly look like they have better seats than 800/802/802’s..a nice cheap and cheerful way to get between London and Scotland which would appeal to most people and their pockets too 😊👍🏽 However, where it fails for me is the lack of 1st class offering. I love to travel the longer distances with more legroom, more comfortable, wider seating with a table and in as much of a quiet ambience as possible to enjoy the journey. The Lumo air line seating is not for me, nor is being packed into these carriages with too much hustle and bustle (noise) 🤔👍🏽
This is an informed guess: there's a major speed restriction through Morpeth because of the sharp curve in the line so the increase in journey time from adding a stop is almost negligible.
Really? Do you believe that? What about First Group's appalling GWR 800 services? Hard seats Arc light level lighting poor catering? Oh and don't forget First's Avanti West Coast and Trans Pennine train services all equally appalling. With Lumo (and to an extent Hull Trains) First Group are just creaming off a level of customer numbers from the encumbered TOC. In my view any TOC operator Group should not be allowed an Open Access licence - those should go to new operators.
It stops at Morpeth (and I think Stevenage too - in the future) because one of their aims is to call at stations which would usually not be served by most operators giving the places with little rail service an improvement. Stations such as Morpeth and Stevenage don’t receive as many stopping services as other stations so I can understand why they would do this.
It was a condition of their franchise not to take existing customers from LNER. They are offering an alternative to flying between London and Edinburgh hence why there are few stops

I’ve been on LNER first class to Scotland and back to London I was very impressed with the service I received and loved the train too plus hot meals on board!
You look handsome. 18:24 Well, I think in the last decade low-cost train operators were created & they're now blowing up in terms of passengers (SNCF's Ouigo in Spain & France, Renfe's Avlo in Spain, Izy in the Paris-Brussels-Amsterdam line & Flixtrain in Germany) like low-cost airlines (Ryanair, for example) in the early 2000s. P.S: Video's score: 8.1
One technical difference between the 801s used by LNER and the 803s used by LUMo are the emergency option, the 801s having a backup diesel engine and the 803s having battery power
Very fair video, pointing out some of the downsides as well as the Lumo pluses. The lack of luggage space is a real problem if you are going for more than a day return. Some of us oldies haven't the strength to lift heavy luggage onto the overhead racks. Aeroplanes also have massive luggage holds, so can minimise the cabin luggage. Having mainly airline style seating loses much of the luggage capacity. I was on the inaugural run as far as Newcastle, and the delay in departure was mainly people trying to lodge their luggage when space had run out.
3:55 Well, from the looks of it the steps into the train look disfunctional. Not being at half the difference between floor and platform levels and then even not level with the carriage floor. Are they defect? Or a bad design?
My biggest issue is the lack of a stop at York. LNER will never improve unless there's true competition. In fact Lumo trains now use the York avoider (mixed in with the freight) to avoid embarrassing LNER.
I have hardly watched your video but like the channel but none the least great video and I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and happy and safe new year .
It doesn't actually rain much in Yorkshire, at least relatively. The West side of the Pennines is very wet, and most of the rain on the prevailing SW wind is precipitated there, leaving the East side much drier. That's generally true of this island anyway - wet West, dry East. Not as dry as the Sahara, but I did say relatively,
Enjoyed your video, Lumo looks interesting. We will consider next time my wife and I are travelling to and from Edinburgh. Suggestion: it might be helpful to also quote the non discounted regular rail fares that a traveler from outside the UK (such as myself) would pay if visiting. I look forward to watching more of your rail journeys. Kind regards, Angus.
Hi Angus. It depends how far you book in advance. The cheaper fixed Advance Singles go very early on in the booking period, trains generally open up for booking 3 months before, so the most reasonable fares will be found then.
Hi Superalbs Travels, there is no First Class and no Cafe Bar buffet counter aboard Lumo Hitachi Class 803 trains. The interior layout of the seating seems to virtually be the same as First Great Western/GWR former High Density Mark 3 trailer vehicles in the High Speed Train/InterCity 125 sets. It is nice to finally see an improved seat design aboard the Hitachi Class 800 family. Best wishes and take care. Kind regards, Peter Skuce, St Albans. Hertfordshire.
Nice work - makes me miss the UK. Quite interesting to compare different trip reports on Lumo ... first Dylan, then Simply Railway, now yours and I believe Geoff Marshall's is coming too. :)
Gorgeous train in they deep blue color. Let's hope with the way Indian railways are being upgraded and we see such things in India. There are several high density routes within 250 km between capitals of various states in India Trains make more sense in Europe because the distance aren't that much so you'll actually spend more time reaching and checkin at airport than actually flying
Nice review. I'm tempted to try out the service at some point. The seats look quite comfortable with plenty of legroom. The only thing I wouldn't like is if I ended up in one of those seats between the windows where you can't see a thing. Often the case with modern rolling stock and one of the reasons I travel in first class for long distance journeys if I can get a good deal by booking in advance. I have a break in Edinburgh planned for next year so I may do one way with LNER and return with Lumo or vice versa.
Mad that a low cost service can make seats so much better than the full price super expensive operators! NB Morpeth is pronounced Morputh, not MorpEth as you are saying. Ta
Halleluja.! A train service that is worth the ticket price. I occasionally travel on European trains and the ticket prices and value are generally orders of magnitude better than with UK trains. This was much more like it.
This was exactly the sort of service that was envisaged when we privatised the railways, sadly the Government colluded with the main operators monopolistic practices and there have been as a result very few open access services and those are achieved only after years of negotiation with Network Rail, by which time the main operator has changed it's timetable and pricing to squeeze out the open access operation.
It appears from your video that if your seat was on the left side you would have been sitting the opposite way you were traveling. I'd like to avoid this! So, am I correct that if traveling from Edinburgh to London I'd better request a seat on the right hand side so as to be facing the way we'll be traveling? Thanks for the great info, we'll be using Lumo train this July
I recommend the chiltern 68s if you want comfort in a standard class seat. Today (2nd November) the only one I can see is 1K50 from Marylebone to Kidderminster
I agree about the price but on the few occasions I have travelled with them I feel passengers are packed in like sardines which for me makes it an uncomfortable journey. You are not wrong about luggage space you have to be the first on the train if you want to use the luggage rack. You need minuscule luggage if you want to use the overhead racks, as for food I always bring a meal deal with me. Overall I prefer LNER and only use lumo when money is tight.
Why Morpeth? 15 minutes by taxi to Newcastle International Airport. Soon to be terminus on resurrected Newcastle-- Blyth-Ashington commuter line so will have a dozen stations/ halts between Morpeth, North Tyneside, Cramlington and Newcastle (and Tyneside Metro).
see, the thing is, lumo arent trying to get people on planes, they are in fact doong the opposite. they are trying to get people to stop using planes from london to edinburgh. a very good reason to use the train instead of plane is because the trains go to the actual place, and somewhere outside the city, often taking up to an hour to get from the airport to the city, compared to 0 minutes. so really, its not an issue that it is a while away from the airport
nice video.. interesting its very similar to Dylans one..im guessing hes your friend?.... btw can you list fares without discount for those of us who dont have railcards gives a real perspective of price then.
If you book far enough I’m advance. They start at £9.99 for a single but average seems to be about £20. The issue is 2 trains a day each way. So good chance you’d have to return with LNER
You get about a third off with a Railcard, so multiply Superalbs's price by 1.5. It's annoying that I'm either 20 years too old for a Railcard, or 10 years too young, depending on which way you look at it.
@@SuperalbsTravels Sorry to disappoint but i can assure you the 2 singles i purchased and have since used were £9.99.... i'd assume if it was an issue with the website i would have been able to go through with the purchase but yet i paid £18.98 and travelled nae bother. Seems you don't know everything after all.
I just booked an LNER train from Edinburgh to London but watching this video made me think that I had made a mistake: Lumo actually has better seating facilities (at least for me) and money value compared to LNER. As a Japanese I just wonder why there's such a difference while both of them were made by Hitachi.
@@SuperalbsTravels Yeh. Before Lumo, and after the introduction of the Azuma on LNER, I always took Avanti and its amazing Super Voyagers and Pendolinos (Standard Class as it was very comfortable). Now i'll take Lumo

True, but I don't think they would be allowed to stop there for the sake of preventing competition... :(
I am sure Lumo would be happy to stop at York, but LNER and Network Rail do not want direct competition.
I have hardly watched your video but like the channel but none the least great video and I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and happy and safe new year .
Nice blue train!
Soft retractable coat hooks, now that's class.
It doesn't actually rain much in Yorkshire, at least relatively. The West side of the Pennines is very wet, and most of the rain on the prevailing SW wind is precipitated there, leaving the East side much drier. That's generally true of this island anyway - wet West, dry East. Not as dry as the Sahara, but I did say relatively,
I wish it stopped at Durham… it would make a lots of students happy!
Good video my man keep up the great work
Thanks!
Awesome video & the 803s look fab in the Lumo blue livery imo.
They sure do! Thanks very much. :)
Agree that the layout is similar. Thanks for watching.
I Love Lumo!!!
Me too! 🥰
Nice work - makes me miss the UK. Quite interesting to compare different trip reports on Lumo ... first Dylan, then Simply Railway, now yours and I believe Geoff Marshall's is coming too. :)
Thank you, come back soon! :)
@@SuperalbsTravels Hopefully … Australia’s borders are gradually reopening so it should be possible. 🥳
@@FromtheWindowSeat I saw in the news, it's good to see at last!
No need for subs. I find that you speak very clearly and I am not a Brit. Keep up the good work!
Looks great!
Nice review! Many thanks 😊
Thanks, hope you enjoyed it. Will you consider using Lumo? 😃
'The Booking Office' at Waverley is worth a visit. It's a very historic building (big crest inside the doors) and now a useful Wetherspoon's pub.
Nice vid keep it going
Gorgeous train in they deep blue color.
Let's hope with the way Indian railways are being upgraded and we see such things in India.
There are several high density routes within 250 km between capitals of various states in India
Trains make more sense in Europe because the distance aren't that much so you'll actually spend more time reaching and checkin at airport than actually flying
5:09 As someone who's never been anywhere close to Scotland I think that's f‘in cool :)
The train looks so cool!
It does!
BLUE LIVERY LOOKS BEAUTIFUL
Morpeth is an 'upper-crust' commuter dormitory for Newcastle . . . PS pronounced 'morpth', not 'morepeth'. Pleasant place.
At 12;53, when you comment on the stunning views of Newcastle, you are actually pointing the camera at Gateshead. Beware of marauding Geordies 😀.
Uh-oh, that sounds worrying haha!
Thanks! I suppose you could always sit in the unreserved carriage to find a better seat?
0:28 hello can I please ask about where you were standing to get this clip of this part of the station thanks
Guard - Customer Ambassador!!! Wow!
Mad that a low cost service can make seats so much better than the full price super expensive operators!
NB Morpeth is pronounced Morputh, not MorpEth as you are saying. Ta
This seems great. I would love to see them operate Glasgow - London, there would be a lot of demand
Finally You've Reviewed This New Operater!! 😀
Finally? It's only the first week! 😂
@@SuperalbsTravels Funny Isn't It? 🤣
Enjoyed the video I recommend doing LNER longest route to London from Inverness
Blimey, that sounds horrible! Maybe. 🤔
I love how, at 0:54 the train was on the road. Dangerou
That’s a tram, mate. Clearly you’re from Leeds
That’s a tram, and darkly I’m from Leeds and I know that’s a tram 🙄
Halleluja.! A train service that is worth the ticket price. I occasionally travel on European trains and the ticket prices and value are generally orders of magnitude better than with UK trains. This was much more like it.
First group finally doing some good
In the future, I want to work on the Bo’ness and Kineil Railway, and to get to Scotland, I want to take Lumo, because it seems REALLY nice !
There has not yet been any availability at £9.99, this is untrue.
I look forward to seeing how much the price will be usually.
@@JBFlytography Bryan! I think you need to calm down!
A very good idea to travel to Edinburgh at a reasonable train fare
Yes, a face reveal!
☺☺☺
I wasn't expecting such a good review. There could be opportunity for Lumo me thinks. James Galliel.
You’ll be glad to know that Avanti have opted for the same style seating as Lumo for their 805/807 fleet.
Yep, a big relief to everyone!
@@SuperalbsTravels I Hope GWR & LNER, Transpennine Express & Hull Trains Replace Their Seats With Lumos Seats
Excellent video 👌👌
This was fantastic… keep it up! Could this be the rail of the future?
Thank you so much, glad you liked it!
I just booked an LNER train from Edinburgh to London but watching this video made me think that I had made a mistake: Lumo actually has better seating facilities (at least for me) and money value compared to LNER. As a Japanese I just wonder why there's such a difference while both of them were made by Hitachi.
Yeah, Lumo is always going to be my first choice!
@@SuperalbsTravels Yeh. Before Lumo, and after the introduction of the Azuma on LNER, I always took Avanti and its amazing Super Voyagers and Pendolinos (Standard Class as it was very comfortable). Now i'll take Lumo
Lumo been late comers have the advantage of seeing what LNER have and LNER did not have full say in that they going as budget set for then . AND DO NOT FORGET lumo may sound like small company but it first group I believe .
@@kevinpoulton Yes the same First Group that operates the Hitachi IET 800s on the GWR - which most hate.
Very useful, thanks for sharing ❤❤ BTW I found an even bigger discount on European railroads😂 Save a lot🤩lol
man I remember your old profile the class 755 :D memories
Ah yes! It was a 745 at Stratford, taken 3rd March 2020, if I am not mistaken.
@@SuperalbsTravels nice! :D
an overall excellent travel option
I have to agree! Thanks for watching.
Cool voiceover and face reveal aswell you're growing fast keep it up and I hope you become the most popular one day like I pledge to be a well know train driver and youtuber xd
Thank you lol!
I'm sad to report that the tickets have now risen. Cheapest ticket on the Lumo website was £46. Those prices couldn't have been that dreamy forever :(
So, just looked at the cost of a return ticket for 2 departing Newcastle to King’s Cross - erm £278!!
I plan to visit UK next Spring and I did research about the train across UK and came across this low cost Lumo. I visited the website and couldn’t find any cheap fares even though I tried for 3 months ahead. Is there a trick to get the low fares? Great detail video, thank you!
All smoke and mirrors. Just like Travelodge's '£29 rooms'. Try finding one for £29...
