  • Darius McCollum has a love of transport that has led to him being jailed 32 times, spending 23 years in prison - despite never harming any person or property. Suffering from Asperger’s syndrome, over 3 decades Darius has commandeered New York buses and subway trains, only to correctly drive their routes and announce the stops. A remarkable story of society’s failure to channel the harmless passions of a mentally challenged man into a productive life.

Poor guy. Would be nice if the city stopped wasting so much money prosecuting him and put his skills and interests to good use. Even as a station attendant or back office person. Being officially employed by the MTA seems like such a dream of Darius and might be good for him and the city.

While I certainly do thoroughly understand the points of reservation made by the spokesman for the MTA (43:50 - 44:40) about Darius McCollum, the fact is that the MTA, as well as other major transit authorities, actually have legitimately employed "loose cannons" who are far more unpredictable than Darius. To make matters worse, because you never know what might set these people off, they represent a far greater threat to the riding public than Mr. McCollum ever did or ever could. Granted, getting behind the controls of a subway train or the steering wheel of a transit bus without due authorization was definitely wrong. But it cannot be denied that this man, who was a 15-year old kid when he first started this, clearly knew everything you must know to operate these vehicles safely, and he did so flawlessly. He clearly understood the gravity given the fact that he had people's lives in his hands! Yet, according to numerous comments throughout this video, he did the jobs better than some "legitimate" employees who had been with the MTA for years!

There's no doubt society has failed Darius McCollom over and over again. Whether enough of the right people will finally help him find a decent job that he enjoys performing still remains TBD.

City of New York needs to hire this guy. It would be way less expensive than incarceration. I guarantee he would be more dedicated than the average city employee anyway.

This was SO incredibly nice AND SAD at the same time! I LOVE Darius yet feel so bad for him too. Incredibly well done documentary. These gems are getting more rare unfrotunately.. Therefore, it's almost like we NEED more ppl like Darius instead of the same ole BS. Darius, we all rooting for you and your love of trains & buses!

Well what happened to the operator in the beginning that originally let him drive the train? Why didn't he come out & admit I left my assign position & let the little boy drive a train! He (The adult train operator) should've been fired and prosecuted, Also charged with child endangerment.

This Young Man does a “BETTER JOB” than the workers starting from the top down. It’s a n “ABSOLUTE SHAME”, that the transit authority wouldn’t and haven’t reached out and help this Young Man in the way of an employment opportunity. I guess they feel embarrassed and slighted that “THEY WERE SHOWN UP” over and over.

IN this day and age after all Darrius has been through, and the knowledge h has acquired over all these long years he should be given a job and the NYC transportation museum. He is an obsessed man who has learned a tremendous amount about the NYC subway system. Give him a consulting job with the system and I am 100 percent that he will deliver the goods. He does not need to be in jail!. The below comments also echo my thoughts. Give him a job and stop wasting time and money on prosecuting him!!.

People forget that there was a time when New York City kids could sneak onto the subways and get lost all over the city and made it home safe before the sunset of the evening (before the light pole lights came on…. Or risk an ass whipping 😅)

Instead of embracing his gift they threw it down and spit in his face, sad story. This enforces my thoughts on how NYC is full of Karens/Darrens running the show there.

59:45 uh yeah he does have skills!! He just proved it right after girl said what she did. He should do some kind of touring as a guide
The MTA should hire him to be an MTA Police or security to make sure people DON'T CHEAT THE FARES

The sad thing is if he was female he wouldn't have spent a day in prison, and they would have rolled out the red carpet in job offers. What happened to the train conductor who went off on his booty call and left Darius in charge of a train at 15 years of age?

Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam ."
Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window ? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?
