I Gave My Friend a 100MPH Run-Up to Beat This Ferrari

- This Golf is faster than a Ferrari, but ONLY if you give it a long enough run-up. So here's the question, how fast do you have to be going to beat a Ferrari to the Quarter Mile after a standing start.
Thanks to Haeunique for lending us their BEAUTIFUL Ferrari 488 Pista. If you need supercar storage or transportation, check them out here! - www.heaunique.c...
So the Golf is a 1.6-litre Turbo Diesel that is completely stock and well and truly ordinary. It has 103 horsepower and 250NM of Torque, as well as a 5-speed automatic gearbox.
But the Ferrari is from a whole different world. It runs a 3.9 litre turbocharged V8. It produces 710 horsepower and 770 NM of Torque!
It also has a sophisticated Launch Control system that we will be putting to the test with several launches.
So what's your guess? How fast would you need to be going over the line to beat the Ferrari?

It makes sense looking at the quarter mile times. I calculate that my Honda City could beat him if it crossed the line at 135 kmph at which point I am probably hanging on to the wheel for dear life.
Well, that settles it. Golf is faster than Ferrari. This video saved me a ton of money.
Mine would win by far with 0-60mph. But lose from Callums car in the 1/4. It's a 140HP toyota Auris Hybrid. 99HP 1.8L 4cyl + hybrid stuff lmao

my car is also a golf tdi but from the 7th generation but with pretty much the same specs - so probably pretty equal
This is the most entertaining drag race I've seen in a long long while, great job guys!
Right 😆
Yesir bro
I’d definitely like to see this as a series!
I love this style of video, the editing is brilliant!!
I didn’t watch the video before I hit the thumbs up, the title got it for me 😂
They do this is real drag racing too. lol. It's called a handicap. Except the slower car just goes first, then the faster car after a set amount of time, so they finish very close to each other.
Nice idea. Brp Brp!!!
That Golf has a new purpose in life. It’s now Golf vs everything to see how fast it has to start the quarter to win. So far the Ferrari is top of the leaderboard with 90mph.
would love to see it go against something like a nevera, might not be able to even beat it
@@ur_boyfriend8612 the Nevera would destroy the golf. Would be awesome to watch!
@@zacjohnson452 koenigsegg would win all
Imagine v tesla the fastest one that get 0 to 60 in under 2 sec needs like 110
With it's 102HP top speed is probably around 160 so if it has to race anything faster it has to be at top speed at the start. I dont think theres a runway large enough for that unfortunately.
Never could imagine the difference would be that great
😂
It has 700% more power, i think you can imagine 🤣🤣
@Jason Shenk Fact😂
Well , definately imagine the price difference.
Thats great too
1.6vw diésel. So slow to wind up. 1.9tdi tunned has a better chqnce.
I was thinking of getting a 488 Pista but now I'm gonna get a 1.6L diesel Golf. Thanks guys!
Not even gonna lie a turbo swap and fuel system on one of these makes these cars deadly fast, I’m talking 400 hp
The pista is absolutely gorgeous
And the golf isn't?? Haha

And then on the actual road, you can be in a Ferrari or in a 1.6 TDI Golf, you will often end up screaming at the idiot in front unable to accelerate properly while merging onto a highway, so that you both can safely enter in front of that lorry.
You won’t have to worry about that lorry in a Ferrari, you can swoop right in and show him dust in three seconds, that is if the Pista doesn’t break down or delay at the worst possible time
@@switch5332 not if there's two smart cars blocking both sides doing 10mph
Supercars are remarkably similar to Super GT's 45-65mph. Pista takes 1.3 to 1.4 for Superleggera and 1.5 for 700 bhp Bentley Super Sports.
To show the distinction between a normal car, a hot hatch, and entry level supercar there are two ways: 0-100-0, or headstart on a circuit
Bikers are very familiar with this phenomenon (every on-ramp)

Sf90 with a 30 mph headstart vs the plaid
@@100nightz That's plain stupid Tesla fanboyism. Plaid can't beat SF90 with only a head start let alone when rolling from a dig. Difference on a drag strip is 0.3s between the cars in unfavourable conditions for the ICE car (hot and humid weather). In cold conditions Plaid doesn't have more than 0.1-0.15s advantage in a fair drag race.
The velocity difference as the Pista was coming up from behind the Golf is simply astounding. You would think that the Golf was actually slowing down instead of accelerating. What speed was the Pista doing at the quarter mile when it caught up to the Golf?
135+ mph easily.
@@srinitaaigaura That's faster than my Toyota's top speed lmao

Ferrari 488 pista does a quarter mile in 10.6 seconds at 144 mph. Good God...
Next time I owe Dom a car, pretty sure between overnighted parts from Japan and labor I'd be better off having the precinct confiscate me one of these... I happen to know where there's a sus looking British chap begging to give one of these up already anyway!
Absolutely loving this channel Scott and the chemistry between y’all is in point much love from Texas
The thumbnail made me think the golf was a minivan lmao
As someone else said, this would be good as a series with different cars
My vtec without mods will beat the cavallino no problem :)
That pista sounds like a low flying jet in the fly by shots. Beautiful spec too.

"My Golf beat a Ferrari 488 Pista in the 1/4 mile", while drinking at the pub.😆
You 3 guys have good chemistry i was laughing along with ya'll 🤣 😂 😆
Loving the originality of the content. Would be interesting to see this again with some different cars, for example a 981 Cayman S. Not that I just selfishly want to see how my car compares to the 488 of course...I reckon 40 but hard to tell since the headstart exponentially scales with the speed and that's not a lot.
How to subtly flex that you have a cayman s=))
@@nedelcumatei9925 I'll always take it as a compliment that people are impressed enough to say it's a "flex" - to me it's a nearly 8 year old used car which I bought because it doesn't depreciate and does 45mpg+ on a run ☺ Genuinely not sure I'd pick another sports car for regular road use even if I had infinite money. If anyone is willing to give me infinite money I'm happy to test that theory (might buy a GTS)...
You can calculate it easily. You Cayman is 13.6s on 1/4mile, that F488 is 10.1s. So you need to enter with the speed a bit higher than the one your Cayman can reach in 3.5s to beat the Ferrari. That is about 60mph.
@@perakojot6524 981CS 1/4 mile is 12.7 but 0-60 isn't quite as good as 3.5 either! Sadly it's also a lot more complex than that- your maths assumes that you're just taking the 0-60 out of the Cayman's 1/4 mile, except if you start at 60 it would do the distance in much less than 10.1 then because it's going to accelerate past the usual trap speed.
Starting at 60, the 981CS will accelerate to about 117mph in 10.1s. Allowing for non-linear acceleration, we can assume an average speed of something over 95 (what it's doing after 5s). That means it will have covered about 1410 feet- so would be 90ft ahead at the end.
I triple checked acceleration data for the car, plotted it over time and used vectors to calculate the distance. The average speed needs to be 89.1mph, so the starting speed would actually be almost exactly 50mph.
@@ApothecaryTerry That 12.7s was only reported by car and driver magazine. They test on preped surface (dragstrip) plus remove first feet. And that's a PDK car. No one other managed to get below 13s even on a dragstrip.
In the race on unpreped surface like in the video PDK version would probably be around 13.2-13.3s and manual 13.6s.
0-60 is around 4.2-4.3s on unpreped surface.
So 13.3s quarter mile means that your car would need to make more distance in 10.1s-(13.3s-4.3s)=10.1s-9s=1.1s travelling with around 115mph than what it makes in 4.2s from a stand still. That is pretty reasonable assumption.
No Offence but y’all need a much better Driver for the Golf no way that Lad was in 60mph and in Fourth saying he had no pull like of course mate there would be like ZERO PULL. Anyway really enjoyed the Video. Keep up the great work.
The entertainment value, from a race like this, is beyond measure to car guys, lol. I loved it. Thanks for answering the question we all actually wanted to know! haha
Now try it with a tesla plaid model s but have it the opposite way where the Ferrari is the one that gets the run-up
I could win Formula 1 Grand Prix on my bike that way if I have a few days of head start
didn't realize your friend had no idea how gears and revs work lol
That turbo only makes the engine powerful enough to not be a danger while driving on the road
Try it with a pure VTEC next time
Bro Ferrari doesnt want you to change gears while you are turning because............... YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO CHANGE GEARS WHILE TURNING. Tada? you are supposed to down shift before turning and up shift after.
The fact that the paddles dont move with the steering is actually a good thing. Good luck figuring out which is paddle is the upshift when you are at arbitrary rotation of the wheel. If you keep your hands at a consistent position, fixed paddles are always in the same place. So there is no confusion.
Trading in my Ferrari for a Golf!!
To be fair, I didn't think the golf would do 80 mph...
You can never confuse which paddle is up or down when column mounted, having owned cars with both column mounted is vastly superior
How would you confuse them
@U.S Grant you would know the wheel is upside
Exept for hairpin corners or drifting where would you ever have your steering wheel mor than 160° turned? On tracks you barely ever have to switch grip, you just keep your hands on the 9 and 3 o clock position so left hand is always downshift and right hand always upshift. Also in those rare situations you could just use the shift knob with one hand.
Did anyone else notice that the runway they are on is the same as on Carwow?
Finally, a drag race that raises anxiety, and has most people secretly rooting for a Golf.
Yeah. Golf is an ultimate underdog
I think it’s funny that they replace the US dollar with pounds than replace the pounds with kilos were they’re from😂 (I don’t know who was first but it doesn’t matter is just a strange coincidence)
Well, at no point was the Golf doing 100mph as a run-up......just better clickbait title?
Was NOT expecting to see Jackson from Dipswitch Demos is your cameraman! 😄
Yeah, the column mounted paddles make absolutely no sense for performance driving.
If they brought 911 turbo s instead of pista it would catch it and its less expensive but great vid .
“More than you can afford, pal” *Ferrari*
Something less drastic would be fun to watch like a new Toyota Camry
My sportbike is faster than both cars! But the ferrari is so beutiful! The VW is also nice!
It's an entertaining video for sure, but did you have to clickbait on the title?
Use the 08 Pontiac g6 gxp coupe vs the Ferrari
Just imagine this but with something like a rimac
It would beat a Cooper Works going 120 mph at the start of the Quarter mile.
5:39 That is some wicked aero for the air to whistle like that.
Best spiced Ferrari I have seen on a 488 pista
You should learn how to drive, and how a gearbox works mate.
Exactly
Thank you....one of the most interesting drag races I've ever seen..!!! Comparing a dream car to a bog standard Golf which we can all relate too was superb 👌👌😀😀
That is funny. I race on a sim rig and I hate paddles that rotate, I know where the right and left paddles are and what they do no matter where the wheel is pointed. On the rotating ones I would hit down for up and up for down almost every time. I actually bought the fixed paddle adapter for my Fanatec CSL Elite wheel base. Wait a minute... "Giving him head?" What does RUclips say about that? "Give him the HIT." Yes much better...
Also you shouldn't be changing gears mid corner if you rotate the wheel that much. That's the point of them being there.
pog
Just give him a Kia EV6 GT😂
How much of a run up would the pista need to beat a model s plaid?
Not much. 9.3 plaid vs 10 flat Pista vs 17 for Golf. The Ferrari does 150 in 11 seconds so. An NSX is closer to a Rimac than to that Golf.
How much of a run up would a model s plaid need to beat a modded 1.03sec Supra
this really puts it into perspective... nothing like that should be legal 😅
Well its got 7x more power than the golf
Yes, but the power required increases quadratically.
P=W/∆t=∆E/∆t=m(vf²-vi²)/2∆t
Which means, 7 times the power translates to 7 times the difference of the square velocities, "just" 2.6 times the variation in velocity over the same period of time.
If you do the math, you'll find that the Ferrari is actually faster than you would expect.
@@Anankin12 Well it’s not just power that matters. The Ferrari is more aerodynamic and has much faster gear changes, so there is no pause in acceleration when upshifting. Unlike the golf which is a manual
@@JGreen444 no shit, I'm assuming everything else being equal.
The point was exactly that "lol it's got 7 times the power" is not enough to justify how much faster it is than the Golf.
Bro I drive a normal car and the fastest ive EVER gone is literally 90mph on the freeway. Its crazy that even if I had THIS much of a headstart against a STATIONARY ferrari I would still lose in a QUARTER-mile race. Like I always knew these hypercars were insane, but bro this is NINETY MILES PER HOUR headstart.... wow. Unbelievable. I cannot imagine what it would feel like to be a passenger, the incredible G-forces...
Okay so £300k for the ferrari. Buy a BMW 435D and give it a higher pressure turbo, performance intercooler, straight pipe exhaust without dpf and a remap. It'll smash the Pissta
The video should be titled 90mph
Would be fun to see the same thing but with the Ferrari vs an actual dragracing car. My guess is the Ferrari would look like the Golf in comparison.
Governed top speed matters, considering the VW tops out @ a possible 155mph. The fact that it would never be a race, makes this useless "clickbait". Congrats on your ability to flog a Ferrari, not really. 🤭
Try it with some manual petrol car it would be possible to push it hard, diesels are incredibly lame with their power delivery so revving them up doesnt even do anything, in petrol car he could push it really hard and have a bit more of a chance so it maybe could do it at 75 or 80 xD
I am by no means a mechanic or engineer in any way. If anything the intelligence come from God: I could understand a corvette with a 100mph headstart. But that!? Even if 100mph headstart it wont be enough because of the power and gear limitations.
Oh bless it, that golf didn't stand a chance! :-)
If you wear alone you would probably win at 90 as well
Yeah the Ferrari is nice and all….BUT CAN WE TALK ABOUT THAT SRP TURTLE!!!
wdym my opel(vauxhall) astra 2004 has done 179kmh(110mph) how could that shitbox almost hit 90-100 mph.???
Try using the Golf R. The Ferrari will have to earn it. There is only 2.4 seconds difference in the 1/4 mile and .7 seconds 0 - 60, and the golf R will out handle it all day long
I think normal cars are camries, civics, accords,, highlanders, tacomas, kia sonata, miatas, brzs, etc... and all these cars hit 60 from 0 in the range of 5.6-7.3s? This car here hits it in 11.2 sec so I don't think this was a normal car this was a prius kind of car and even the prius is faster too lol
Both weigh about the same. So hp and torque means the pista kills it. Haven't watched the race yet. Ohh 1.6 diesel. Damm if it was a tuned 1.9. Lol
Paddles should always be stationary....you shouldn't be changing gears whilst in corners anyway and then you will never mistake - for + and vice versa
A 4 cylinder gas engine makes more horsy’s then that golf and ik for a fact that thing can make 150hp easily they need to be putting more power especially in a DIESEL engine
my fist car was a 1.6tdi golf, i also test drove a 1.4i with 80hp which was so slow the 1.6tdi felt like a super car
If the guy was actually doing 60 at fourth gear this this is a bad test. It should be in 2nd or perhaps 3rd at that speed for optimum output...
And if he did such a bad choice at 60 he likely did in all speeds.
That golf does seem unusually slow. I am from the U.S. so maybe its just my point of view but my 95 f150 seems faster than that golf.
1:58 Your ignorance is immesurable, and you have a car focused RUclips channel. I'm disappointed.
Paddles should stay stationary, why would you be changing gear with so much steering lock that you can’t reach those massive paddles?
I’m amazed with those ugly US looking rear taillights. I thought all European MK6s had the led rails
get mk8 R, DSG. try this again
using a 12 year old golf, slow manal.... =_=
Was interesting but using an old 2011 plate 1.6 at 100bhp that has no pull and that is alot slower than a older 1.9 vauxhall astra SRI at standard 148bhp that just pulls from start to finish would be interesting to see
I calculate my Honda City should beat the Pista with a 135 kmph start. 😂🤣
hrm this smacks of a British version of the Hoonigans This v That...not that I'm complaining...this is quite entertaining!
An average car in America has more than 104 hp; however, a small vehicle has 104 hp. Normal in America is 180 to 200hp
Well no, it's not "faster" hahaha, it just finishes first.
I do this in my prius anytime a hellcat Flys by me just to stop at a red light... sometimes all hell breaks loose behind me its fun highly recommended! 💯
My normal car could win at 50 -60, not a Ferrari but faster than a gold 1.6 TDI lol
This reminds me of that video of a Koenigsegg giving a focus a half mile headstart in a mile race and still blows past it like it's standing still
I love the gold and blue on the Ferrari, not sure they go with the black stripes though (not that I'd kick it out of the garage mind)
If you have a really high horse power car it can be reliable even if it wasn't a reliable car go mod the ecu of your 1000 hp car to let it only use 400 hp not only you will save gas plus the parts of the car will last longer.
Absolutely just roasting a poor homeless-looking golf for straight 9:01 minutes....
