Dip can be fixed rather easily. Just need to cut and remove the botched part (peel or a run) to get to the good portion, rub the edges with paint thinner to smooth the edge of the film, and respray with a bit of an overlap. Also, no need to mask all chrome parts. If there are no pores or weird cavities on the trim peices, it can be simply peeled after dip has dried. Just may need to pre cut some of the adjacent edges, but its' the same in case of the masking tape. Overall, this is a great and fun DIY with no commitment. The only thing you seed is space to do it.
@@mrakhoover True, but I would still mask the windows and the lights (or any other large area) as this would be a waste of product if you were to build it up to the peelable thickness.
@@VasyaIvanovichPupkin That's quite correct. But it's best to leave a 2cm gap of exposed glass to aid a clean peel-off and achieve a sharply defined edge. These guys unfortunately extended their job enormously by masking. One is supposed to paint over everything and then peel-off what you want to expose after it has dried. This way one gets a sharp edge around door handles, chrome trim, badges etc.
Still doesn't work. Your last coat might not be dry but the previous ones definitely are. Either dont mask it at all and see if it peels at the edge or run the razor along the edge before even trying to remove the masking
For anyone else attempting plastdip. One tip I've seen is using dental floss(or similar) laid with the tape for pulling clean lines. Basically you pull the dental floss after painting and it will cut a nice clean line through through the dip
This channel is quickly becoming Top Gear, but if they kept filming instead of cueing the music, and I love it. Also the PT Cruiser might be the first car ever that genuinely looks way better plasti-dipped.
Yeah honestly that was a great result for not a lot of money. Definitely peel when wet, that's also true with certain spray paints to get the best result.
you should try on the PT Cruiser the old granma repairing tips: - hot water and plunger to fix bumps - toothpaste to make the chromed parts shiny etc. etc.
I loved my PT cruiser! It was great as a band van! Then the gearbox died and I couldn't afford to fix it at the time. =[ I always wanted to lower it and fill the arches with some bigger wheels, so maybe that would be cool to see here! \m/
I learned to restore cars when I worked for an high end car shop. So watching this made me get knots in my stomach. However, you guys did a great job! You probably did a better job than most. When it comes to painting cars, the prep work is the most important. Depending on the condition of the car, the prep can take several times longer than what's required to lay down the paint. Can't wait to see the next project!
I dipped some car panels here and there 10 years ago just fine. The biggest task was my 1999 Eclipse done in Black Cherry 7 years ago and left it on since. Most of it is still strong but is naturally fading on the sides which gives it a neat "barn find" aesthetic. Color is over factory "Barcelona Red Pearl" so it's almost exact color, just no luster.
We do this stuff for a living you need a minimum of 8 coats for it to be peelable like a wrap 4 of your primer grey 4 of your colour. Your also ment to peel when the dip is wet. Did you also know also if you buy the high gloss top coat on the website It comes out just like OEM paint. It can even be wet sanded & polished ceramic coated treated like normal paint. The pro coatings are much better can last 6 years plus but the general Matt lasts around a minimum of 2 years when done right :)

You've done a good job for £250 to be fair, there are some shots of the door (where you can't see the hideousness of the body shape) where it looks quite good.
Bit of a job, but in the 3d printing car group guys are 3d printing things like diffusers then skinning the prints in carbon. You could even do it with carved polystyrene akin to f1 parts. The pt cruiser definitely needs a dirty big rear diffuser for ground effects! Oh and eventually a diy botch job turbo conversion would be wicked, get the boys to weld up a manifold and make their own tubing kit for the intake/intercooler, then have them road tune it themselves, no professional assistance allowed!
Yea, Driven Media has that old Top Gear vibes doing silly things. They are less clown-like, but I think that's because people had enough of Rollin- Robins.
Remove the masking while the last layer of dip is still wet. Then the dip will break at the masking edge tape and not rip off with the tape. Also do not let the layers fully dry before applying the next layer.
I have used Plasti-dip on many projects for years and the level of success is only as good as the prep. I use the blue masking tape as it is made to be attached for longer periods. I haven't used the white stuff in decades.
I say the roller paint technique. Slap a thick roller coat on it then sand it down to a nice even coat. That’s what I’d like to see next. Should be even cheaper than dip.
I think you should try to stick a supercharger onto the PT cruiser. A nice big one, like people put onto classic muscle cars, should contrast hilariously to the budget mods you've already put onto that car.
Yes. You can. Did mine for £232, actual paint. Not the best finish but hey, first time spraying in a garden, can't expect amazing results. Paint, not dip. Dip I did for £180 including sprayer
I met a man who had spray painted his car with an old insect killer spray can. Basically a can on its side with a bike pumpti form a ventury effect to apply the paint
I am new to DIY spraying but I would suggest that the gun nozzle is large so good for a heavy finish eg primer. Surprised there was no sanding of the primer, the topcoat was never going to be the best you could get. Overall I enjoyed the process and the colour is even😊 but looks like a roller job.
You wanna peel the masking while it's damp so you get a clean cut. I made that mistake my first try. But you learn, and eventually you can do a pretty decent job with this stuff. And the best part is, it peels off so you can try again :)
I mean it's very very matte and I personally find the red even more hideous than the grey on the pt cruiser but that isn't a half bad job considering the two clowns and a Richard approach y'all went with
I used to have a PT Cruiser, and wow. So poorly made. Definitely a case of form over function. To do some of the most basic work on the engine, you'd either have to drop the engine whilst up on the ramps or hoist _up_ the engine from underneath. Ugh. Not to mention the hilarious radiator fan problem where it wouldn't work unless you pulled _out_ the relay for the fan motors. I get what Chrysler wanted to do with the PT Cruiser and the intention was good. They fucked it up royally though. Moved on to a 300C Touring. Night and day difference in build quality.
