  • 🚶‍♂️Do you like thrills?? Come with me as we stand roughly five feet from a quarter-mile long Bullet Train running at an average speed of 262kmh (164mph)!!
Normally it's impossible to get this close to a full-speed Shinkansen (Japanese word for Bullet Train) though on this little farm road the engineers had to build the protective fence as close as possible in order to provide room for the road. Add to this the fact that the train is leaning TOWARDS us as it corners and we have the makings of a real close encounter! The blast of air as the train passes is almost enough to us off our feet!
I've deliberately edited out all location information in this video as the fence here appears to have been compromised by vandals and I therefore would not want to give the location away. (KB)
Ask.com describes the Shinkansen as the fasted listen train service in the world. :-)

That's one of the coolest things I've seen in awhile! It flew by in 5.7 seconds, and I heard 16 carriages including end pieces, which would make it about 1350 ft with some gaps. That means the train blew you by at about 260 km/h. Sick!

1:57 sound of bullet train transforming into Optimus Prime

  • @jpsholland
    @jpsholland 7 лет назад +69

The "Harley" in the tunnel are shockwaves generated by the train. The part that stick out of the tunnel like a barrel is actually a silencer like you find under you car. The nose of this trains are developed in a windtunnel to minimize the shockwave at their service speed. This is done because they have to travel between old buildings and homes where people like to stay in their bed at night.
Japan started with high speed trains in the early 60tis with the bullet train, named after the chape of the nose. The first series are now called series 0. The train you saw here is the series N-700 with have a service speed of 300 km/h.
When France stepped in with their TGV, which was a lot faster as the series 0 and the series 100 and 200, they discovered the shockwave generated by the train, especially in tunnels. This wave is formed by the air which can not fully escape at the sides and roof of the train when they ride through the tunnel. So they push the wave forward which result in a sound that look like a sonic boom and is equally loud just before the train exit the tunnel.
The French soon knew that the track at the time were not good enough for the TGV's service speed of 275 km/h. So they build special new routes for the TGV. This include new, wider tunnels for the air to escape and silencers at the end of the tunnel.
The Japanese faced a problem in building the French way. That problem was space. The mountainous country has limited space and there already were a lot of railroads in Japan which are still today a 3 feet, 3 inch narrow track. Which is not a unwise choice in the mountains with sharp curves, steep climbs and limited space to build in the often hard volcanic rock which Japan is made of.
Narrow track was not stable enough for high speed trains, so they have to build the normal track which is 4 feet, 8.5 inch. It was impossible for the Japanese railroad company to widen up all tunnels and make complete new routes. At the older tunnels, now with the wider normal track, this trains just fit in the tunnel. The other problem was that the train came very close to peoples homes. Close enough that the shockwave would crumble down the homes within a few years.
So they came up with this strange looking design of the nose of the train which is designed to brake up the shockwave for a part under the train and the major part straight up. Make old tunnels higher can be a easier task then widen them if your space is limited sideways. This with the silencers at the end of the tunnels reduce the sonic boom like shockwaves to that "Harley" in the tunnel you heard.

I'm an aeroapace fluids engineer, and you explained that like a pro. I knew the sound was due to the aerodynamic effects somehow but your writeup was complete.
I've been on these trains (in Japan, not Europe) and they are IMPRESSIVE. The Japanese are amazing problem solvers and the silencers at the tunnel ends were exactly that - a clever, workable solution to a potentially serious problem. Kudos.

Amazing Japanese infrastructure and technology allows these high speed trains to operate so frequently with a perfect safety record. Meanwhile in the U.S.A., we just launched a "high speed train" which only goes 100mph which is way way slower than these bullet trains, and we had a derailment with casualties on day 1.

This is very close. In fact, originally back in 1964 when Shinkansen line from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka was completed, entire route was supposed to be elevated, to avoid any humans, cars, or whatever from crossing, like ordinary railways. When I watch this video, I wonder how can anyone can able to get so close to the perimeter, one scene where the flimsy wire fence is shaking even before bullet train passes. JR should have elevated this area as well as all other areas with more secure fence. Imagine some lunatic might enter through the fence and can cause havoc. It's not a laughing matter if one is hit by 320km/hr. speed!

First time I saw it at that speed was absolutely unbelievable. And this is 30mph/50km/h faster than the Acela already is.

At once rural station I literally stood on the platform 1 meter away from the Shinkansen as it races past at around 150-200 km/h. I could have reached out and touched it. It was exhilirating and pretty scary.

I like the sound it makes as it approaches, like there's a huge surge of electric current rushing down the rails, I wonder if that comes from the maglev technology. I had one instance where I came 5 inches from a passing freight train in Maine and it was intense, so I can somewhat imagine what it'd be like being next to one travelling that fast.

Set up some lawn chairs and get some orange juice made and make a day of watching those. That would be fun. It is even a nice shaded spot. The train going by even shakes your bike. The metal groans under the pressure and when the vibrations hit the corrugated metal at the ends of the tunnel you get that weird noise.

This is why most bullet train railways should be build on bridges. If you try this for 350 km/h Chinese bullet trains, the air pressure thrust will push you into a risk even with fences like this.

Although not entirely comparable there's a situation like this near where I live where the station is 2 tunnels with a grate separating the pass tracks from the regular platform, but the passers go through at 125mph at if you're leaning on the grate you can just feel all the air get suckwd through the grate as it passes.. Feels great while you're waiting for a train on a hot day!

  • @dpkkmrjha16

Bro...Every minute a high speed train was passing by not in every 3 minutes. And it was very crazy of you to climb up the fence and poop out in-between Bob wires. You were lucky man not to fall down because of blast of air otherwise you could have hurted yourself. Take care...
