Produced by the Forest Service in 1952, this short film tells the story of Smokey the Bear, the iconic U.S. Forest Service’s iconic representative for wildfire prevention. Despite the common belief that Smokey was named after a burned orphan bear cub, the opposite it actually true. During WWII, the Forest Service began a public information campaign, to try to prevent wildfires. The 1942 campaign featured Disney characters from the film Bambi, but the characters were only allowed to be used for one year. A new symbol was needed, and a bear character chosen featuring the name Smokey. This was adopted from “Smokey” Joe Martin, a famous NYFD firefighter who suffered severe burns in a heroic 1922 rescue. In 1950, a 3-month-old black bear cub with burned paws and hind legs was discovered in New Mexico in the wake of the Capitan fire. The cub initially was named Hotfoot Teddy by rescuers, but he was later renamed Smokey after the iconic bear of the advertising campaign. The Wartime Advertising Council (later the Ad Council) coined the famous Smokey slogan: "Remember ... only YOU can prevent forest fires."
This film begins with a brief PSA featuring an animated Smokey, before showcasing Eddy Arnold performing a song written by Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins, "Smokey the Bear". Some of the lyrics include: "Smokey the Bear, Smokey the Bear, Prowlin’ and a-growlin’ and a-sniffin’ the air. He can find a fire before it starts to flame, That’s why they call him Smokey." Arnold's audience includes Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. At 5:13, another PSA includes a special plea for smokers, asking them to snuff cigarettes and matches, and at 5:58, another PSA reminds viewers that only 10% of forest fires are naturally caused, with the rest being caused by humans. At 6:50, another PSA shows proper methods of burning trash and brush.

Finally! Proof that it IS Smokey the Bear, and not Smokey Bear. They changed his name and tried to Gaslight everyone by claiming that it was never Smokey the Bear! Thanks for this.

Adding to what Dennis said, when I was five years old (mid 1960's) there was a one time cartoon on Smokey and my father let me control the TV, that one time, for 30 minutes and this song was played at least twice during the cartoon. After I finally had DSL speed on my internet I searched imdb rather hard and finally found a notation on the cartoon, but there's no other data, other than the cartoon happened. No cast or production crew listed. Moving forward, Smokey was found in a forest near Lincoln New Mexico. We were passing through Lincoln and saw advertisements for a Smokey Bear museum in Capitan, which is near Lincoln. If you are into history, this trip now Highway 380 is worth it. Capitan has the afore mentioned museum. Lincoln has the Billy the Kid museum, which is in the very same courthouse that he he shot his way out of in the late 1800's. A little further down 380 is Roswell, which has the UFO museum because of the 1947 UFO crash.

When I was a kid in the early 60's I sent away and joined the Smokey the Bear Fan Club. I got a certificate, badge and became a Junior Forest Ranger. Not bad being a Jr. Forest Ranger in NYC ~ LOL

It was commercials and shows like this that lead me to get degrees in wildlife and fisheries management, forestry, and water resource undergraduate degrees, a master's and work for federal agencies for most of my career. A worst day in the woods, is better than your nest day in the office.

Actually, there are many reasons. But, really bad fires tend to occur about every 400 to 700 years. As with everything , weather cycles control. Wait around and half cycle, and you'll be complaining that Smokey caused all the green vegetation because of all the precipitation.
Amongst other causes, carelessness of humans, or more tragically, it may be DEW from either satellites or aircraft.
