This is a very informative video. Being 22 minutes long, makes it long, yet well worth the time for those that like FACTS behind "Smokey The Bear"

I remember some of those public service announcements. They were huge during our bicentennial years.

There's an argument of his name. SMOKEY BEAR and SMOKEY THE BEAR. Its presented in a song as Smokey the Bear.

Children played "cowboys and Indians" in those days, emulating the heroes of the movies and TV shows of the time. When I was a kid, we admired the Indians and envied our friends at school who had native heritage in their lineage. Indians, to us, represented respect for and knowledge of nature. Too bad the gov't didn't see it that way. As children we were sheltered from the reality of how badly Native Americans were treated.

One time on Mannix a beautiful lady threw a lit cigarette out a moving car window and Mannix replied 'Smokey the bear wouldn't like that".

It's Tragic how millions of acres have burned since these psa's were made. Thousands of wildlife and fenced livestock have perished! People have lost lives and property especially in the western US where there is drought.

Unfortunately we were very good at preventing fires and the result is a forest that has way too much combustible material and too many homes nearby. Like in New Orleans man has put himself in grave danger by our ignorance.

Rena Jacile it was found by a taos pueblo fire crew called "snowballs" in NM near Mescelaro. The Forest Service took credit for the rescue of the bear and no credit was given to the Pueblo snowball crew.
