I grew up in London during the rise of the grime era and became a fan of the Beastie Boys after hearing Intergalactic when I was 11. Where I grew up if you listened to any kind of alternative music you were seen as ‘corny’ etc so I never showed my friends my love for the Beastie Boys. When I became 16 I met people who were more open minded and it allowed me to be more outward with the music I liked. Now I’m 25 and absolutely open about the music I like. Beastie Boys is art man, MCA’s death was one of the first celebrities I was really sad to hear had died RIP

I think the 25-45 crowd (I'm 28) gets it, regardless of whether or not they were Beastie Boys fans, and younger people who haven't grown up with them have no concept of how deep their impact is. I've been watching interviews, videos, documentaries, and listening to their albums for the last two days. It really feels like the end of an era, and it really hurts.
