- Edaville Family Theme Park introduced the concept for "Thomas Land" to the USA. While it seems like it was fun and full of cranberries, deep down, relationships were tough, and it soon led to a lawsuit...

guys please stop with the history of edaville and cranberry comments i just did the cranberry thing for a joke to make the video funny :(
The end was graphic!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Whoever came up with the idea of a Troublesome Trucks roller coaster deserves a raise.
Over in the uk it’s a lot of fun at draton manor
They even have the classic faces and all
And a red Rosie model too .
Wish they had it at Kennywood, I think there where plans for it but it ever got added :(
Yep

Edaville deserved better and still does, As a citizen from Massachusetts USA I’m frustrated with Mattel for how this epic idea ended up falling apart in less than a decade. If I ever do plan to go back, I’ll look around Alpine Village for what it used to represent when I was 10 years old when it first opened. This narrow gauge Heritage Railroad respects Thomas for it’s DOWT like every single other Railroad/Railway Out There. Never overlook a little engine
i’ll have you know, i was VERY harmed
shut up dead man walking
Damn
What's wrong?
For the cranberry part, the park used to be a railway that hauled cranberries. Hell, there’s a cranberry museum within the park and some of the cranberry bogs around the park that the tracks go through still seem to be in use.
Edaville: Thomas land!
Mattel: Let’s do something illegal, it’ll be fun.
Edaville was formed in the 1940s to work a cranberry plantation with 2 foot gauge equipment from Maine. It became a railroad theme park, in fact Walt Disney visited. It closed in 1991. Most of the original equipment returned to maine. There were attempts to reopen it in 1996 and 1997, but it did in 1999 and has been basically open since then. The new operators are running steam regularly and as you have said, re themed Thomas land as Alpine village.
I love how people incorporate actual history of the locations they use for these attractions
Imagine buying a brand that's well known to be popular with those in the Autism community, and deciding "We don't want to deal with that."
Man I wish there was a life size model railway of sodor...
*Sips tea*
I'll be right back...
Man, I had no idea that Kennywood Thomas land contributed to the closure of this one.
The Kennywood version of the park is the only one I’ve had the fortune of visiting on my travels, and although it is still fun, it is a very small version of Thomas land with only a fraction of the Thomas themed rides.
The reason why there is a lot of things about cranberry’s is because in a different section of edavilles park was a large cranberry bog. Edvaille had a few other sections besides Thomas. During fall they have big events about cranberry’s.
The same preservation spirit that inspired Rev. Awdry was the same one that drove Ellis D. Atwood, founder of Edaville, to save the Maine two footers.
Edaville, before coming a true theme park, was a narrow gauge railroad built to haul the owner's cranberries. (Locals quickly wanted rides and the focus of the railroad quickly shifted). The line was even known as the "Cranberry Belt Line." Cranberry bogs still surround the park to this day.
I fondly remember the Thomas land in the UK, ever since I was a little child I have wanted to go back to it. I still am hoping that one day, one day I'll be able to return.
This is semi related, but it’s so fascinating seeing pictures of the Six Flags of original railway engines that are so clearly just Thomas characters repainted and with random gimmicks on them to avoid copyright issues.
My heart goes out to the group of designers who had to quickly throw together something so they could still use their Thomas model without getting sued. And maybe this is just me but it’s so fascinating. Thinking of what these engines would be like in the Thomas universe, since we know the railway series and the television series exist in universe, it’s only logical that these theme park attractions would also exist.
I actually used to work along side Edaville for autism related events with their special ed coordinator back when Thomas Land was in discussions. I had a organization that used to donate computers to autistic kids and Edaville wanted someone on the spectrum to help come up with a program following Edaville hosting autism awareness month every year around April when Thomas Land was around every year I used to actually ride out there and they used to donate the first ticket of their operating season to me as a donation for my efforts for helping out those of the spectrum. I actually got to see behind the scenes stuff when they were building Thomas Land in 2014/2015.
Since after that lawsuit Mattel has allowed Thomas to return to Edaville after them requesting Thomas to return to Strasburg to have Thomas be repainted along with adding the bubble stickers
That DOWT unit is the only 2-foot gauge unit and basically lives at Edaville as none of the other 2-foot gauge railroads host DOWT anymore.
Thank you very much for making this video, Tidmouth Yard Studios. I am happy to see you took the time to do research on the subject of the lawsuit that ended the American Thomas Land. But, to think about it, it's just sad and maddening to see the reputation of the US Thomas Land being ruined to a certain representative at Mattel and other shady things behind the scenes from Mattel no one knew about.
But then again, great job on your research!
I grew up going to Edaville, with my sister being a huge fan of Thomas! A Day Out with Thomas was always there until Thomas Land opened! The site of the former Thomas Land was just forests & a few neat locomotives.Edaville was a cranberry farm, so that's why they do a Cranberry Stage Show & Festival!
As someone who went to Edaville during their DOWT events and visited Thomas Land a bunch of times, I was very saddened and upset when I heard about the whole situation between Edaville and Mattel. I am glad they managed to bring back their DOWT events, but still, Edaville just doesn't feel the same without Thomas Land. I know a bunch OG Edaville fans and/or foamers are going to go war-crazy on me for that statement, but that's just my opinion. I didn't visit Edaville as a child (by that, I mean in the early 2010's) that much back when they had regular steam operations, mainly cuz I was a Thomas-obsessed nerd and not into actual railroading back then.
90% of Edaville that I remember growing up WAS Day Out With Thomas, with my visits taking place mostly between 2008-2014, but I did experience Thomas Land once! Everything except the Thomas IP is still intact, so for the amusement park enthusiasts like me, it's not much of a change. It's just sad for me to think that you can only see Thomas on certain dates, as opposed to every Full Summer Season.
For the cranberry thing, this is most likely because Massachusetts’ state fruit is the cranberry. We have a TON of cranberry bogs.
Want a sprite cranberry?
Man. I Remember going to the Edaville railroad & seeing Day Out With Thomas for my 9th birthday.
Thanks for letting us know more about the lawsuit. And great video too! I wished I’ve been able to go to Thomas Land, but it’s too far away from where I live.
I have been fortunite enough to go to a Day Out With Thomas three times in my life, but I haven't had the chance to go to a Thomas theme park. This would have been nice.
For the Cranberries, the park was built atop a massive Cranberry Bog, and the loop of track they use for the rides was actually used to haul cranberries to the station. I think the museum in the main park was used as a processing facility too.
As someone who lives 45 minutes away from Edaville, that place has been VERY involved in my life. That’s actually what brought me into the Fandom back in 2008. At that point I hadn’t really talked much, but one day I strung together enough words to let my parents know that I wanted to visit Clifford the Big Red Dog who was doing a meet and greet at Edaville because I had just seen him on a commercial. Because we lived so close, we all went up to visit. However, Clifford would not be the most interesting thing there, as they were advertising some of the new Thomas Characters from the most recent season (Edaville and Thomas were still big business partners before Thomas land.) It may have also been Day Out With Thomas, but I’m not sure. Either way, I was OBSESSED. I think we even bought some Wooden Railway while we were there. According to my parents, about a week later I started started saying a lot more words and phrases. I’m not sure if this has any correlation, but I feel as though something was unlocked in me that day. After that, I’m pretty sure we went to every day out with Thomas they held for the next few years, considering I have all the DOWT cars from 2009-2014. Once Thomas land was announced, I was super excited and went on all the rides (except cranky, you’re not catching me on one of those things to this day.) It was super sad to hear it closed down, and I don’t think we’ve been back since, however I’d still love to go back there one day.
Eda, the person who this park is founded for, was the CEO and founder of Ocean Spray with a massive cranberry farm, his best friend, F Nelson Blount.. of Blount Seafoods, was his best friend, when they weren't doing business stuff they rail fanned. One day, they bought all the maine 2 foot stuff on the cheap and brought it all to the cranberry farm, and gave train rides.. i think you can see where this is going..
The rides and shops are still there just without the Thomas branding, and as far as cranberries, the park is surrounded by cranberry bogs
3:58 WAIT??!! The Person Behind The Railways of Crotoonia Himself (Milan Tooner) Won a Competition for a Good Name for The Park's Gift Shop??!! I don't Believe It!!😮😮😲😲
Atleast Kennywood’s Thomas Town still exists 🤷🏻♂️
This is good video. It reminds me of how WE’RE going to have a lawsuit fella.
Great video with good research. Never heard of this place at all honestly. Same with Thomas town. Would love to see a follow-up video about that as well.
Man I remember when this park opened, for years I wanted to go but never got the chance, it's a shame that it's no longer around
I went to Kennywood for the first time this year in August and I checked out the Thomas land section and It was still in operation it was exactly what I thought it would be like. There was barely anybody there, rides were rusted or paint changing colors due to water. the Diesel Derby and Cranky Crane drop where the worst offenders of this (seriously Rusty looked Yellow instead of orange) Merch store was VERY VERY tiny probably was sitting on the self for years with only minis from like 2017 there like 5 Thomas Land shirts and an unenthusiastic employee running the register which I don't even think noticed I walked in ( I was very tempted to steal a mini just to check) also "Lets be Brave" was playing in the background.
I had so many good memories there and wanted to go back now I see what happened :(
The title card should read The Lawsuit that saved Edaville. It’s a shame the first tourist railroad in the world was made a joke of. Yes when it first closed in the early 90’s and the collection went back to Maine it was the end of an era. But Thomas land ending brought original equipment home.
I already knew of Edaville's history with narrow gauge trains, affectionately known as the Maine Two Footers, that ran on the track that Thomas Land used. The track was laid by a cranberry farmer who bought narrow gauge locomotives from their closing lines in Maine, intending to use them to move supplies and the cranberry harvests about by rail. The local public often asked for train rides and he obliged them, eventually realizing that he could also run the railroad as a tourist operation. So he opened the Edaville Railroad (named after his wife, Eda), and the line operated into the 90's when financial trouble and declining ridership led to it's closure. The Maine Two Footers were returned to Maine for operations there, but if I heard correctly, one of them is back at Edaville now to operate there again. I can't confirm that last part yet so don't quote me.
Yes Monson 3
@@Jscola30 Thank you!👍
I'd wish to visit Thomas land in Edaville, but then seeing why it was scummy for Mattel to close the park, at least we have Thomas town In Kennywood which is still open to this day, and day out with Thomas continues to this day
And I'm surprised Edaville wouldn't have the same without Thomas, and I'm glad they brought him back for a return to day out with Thomas week ago this Year!
I’m so glad I even got to enjoy Edaville when I was younger. It was a fun time, and I hoped to go back but sadly it won’t be the same. Mattel made yet another great move for Thomas (sarcasm 🙄)
I would love to see more Thomas theme park videos please.
The reason for the cranberries is because Edaville was built around several cranberry bogs
I KNEW THIS LAWSUIT WOULD INVOLVE MATTEL IN SOME CIRCUMSTANCES!
3:18 I think this is unique to Edaville, the original railroad was built as an easy way to help collect the cranberry harvest from the nearby bogs. So their history page reads, (paraphrasing) people paid for rides to the bogs and helped with the harvest
Wow Mattel! Me and my sons flew to Massachusetts multiple times, strictly for Thomas Land. By the way… my sons are autistic. I will never knowingly purchase another Mattel product as long as I am alive.
Indeed. I thought it wasn't possible to hate a company more than I hate Goodwill (Exploititive practices of disabled people while their top guys sit in mansions looking down at all the 'untermensch' they employ for sub-minimum wage) but hearing that, Mattel is giving Goodwill a serious run for their money now.
It would’ve been cool if they had a Diesel 10 section there along with Splatter and Dodge and it would be a ride where you have to escape from him chasing you. Or make it a bit darker and it would be the smelter’s yard.
damn I still have the wooden railway items I got from here. it was a demolition pack and Spencer.
I went to Edaville once and the Thomas area was so cool!
I hope Universal Pictures owns Barbie, Hot Wheels, Thomas and Friends and Masters of the Universe as soon as possible fingers crossed
I visited 6 flags back in 2020, just before COVID hit. I noticed the Percy ride, as it's almost identical to how it was before the branding was removed, which really meant no face and number. I looked it up when I got home and found out it used to be Thomas themed so that was cool.
Am a ride operator at Edaville, and they way I look at it, its better than putting condos over it agree ?
I thought this was about to tell me that the Thomas land here in the Uk was getting shut down 😭😭
Edaville is literally surrounded by cranberry bogs
It’s so weird how it feels the same but different as the uk one
I wanna see you do a video on what youd like to see at the mattel theme park when it cones to Thomas and other HiT properties
This is why you don't butcher people's childhood...
What Mattel did, that's going way over the f@#!*%g limit!!
What’s gonna happen to those giant replicas of the model series figures?
Bruno the caboose is incredibly insulting. A caboose! No means of propulsion, so unable to do much of anything without help (I.e. a locomotive). Complicates switching moves. Contributes no revenue to the railroad while incurring maintenance expenses. A drag on the bottom line that was eliminated as soon as practical. Authentic, eh? Maybe for early 1940s Germany! I'd say that Bruno was created based on bigoted stereotypes.
Edaville, I went there in August of 2018 and it was awesome and went on all the rides 😎, but I was not expecting a lawsuit to end Thomas land
I’m from Massachusetts. They make cranberries down where it is.
The cranberries get too much.🤪
However: Screw Matell! First they ruin Rebecca my favourite female character for me by missusing her ACTUAL potential and now THIS. I'll laugh very loud when Matell gets bancrupt. They even alienate autistic people like Trevor Davis and myself by INSULTING them.
draytons my local park and it is a nice area some of the rides arent exactly the same edville got harold and troublesome trucks are completly different
I wouldnt say this lawsuit ended thomas land as thomas land still exists in the UK and Japan
Oi! Be Specific! Six Flags Discovery Kingdom!
I actually live a little over an hour away from kennywood in butler so I can visit Thomas town if I get the money
8:29, what is this unholy creature
I hate that Companies are being bullies and taking everything me and everyone loves!
6:07 Well, as an autistic person, I was pretty shocked and angry when I heard about it a year ago. Shame on them.
It looks… SO GOOD
I’m so upset it got taken down. I went there when I was younger and loved it and wanted to take my new baby there. Now will probably never have the chance. 😢😢😢
6:03 "These scribbles are a bunch of cockamamie balderdash!"
You've gotta be kidding me...
I have been to Thomas land before it's closure. My younger sibling loved the playroom
I personally enjoyed the troublesome trucks.
Screw Mattel for doing this
Thomas land at Drayton manor is a great day out
Wild thing is the kenny wood location aint to popular growing up in Pittsburgh I can tell you now we are very against change of any kind especially the older locals I very well recall laughing about how stupid the addition was with my neighbors
Serves you right, Mattel!
Now we should settle a lawsuit against Mattel for what they did to the franchise after the 24th season!
That’s not illegal.
You can't sue a large company just because they rebranded a show. That doesn't even work in real life at all.
@@SammySesame Blah
Mattel just now is not the same.
@MarcusThe894 They haven't been since late 2017. I cut ties with them in 2023 because of their horrid mistreatment of Thomas, and those ties are going to remain cut until they either stop mistreating Thomas or give his rights to a company that respects the legacy that the Rev. W. Awdry and Britt Allcroft spent decades building up.
@@FlyingDuckMan360 I agree.
This is why I hate Mattel all they care about is money they don't care about the children
Mattel is a very screwy company for Edaville and the autism community
I would’ve loved to go
i knew mattel was bad but NOT THAT BAD
I’ve been for day out with Thomas in uk 2024 and I loved it😊😊😊😊
I wish I went there.
Down with Mattel!!!!
Nice video
I never got to go :(
Is this the one at Drayton Manor
No offense, but did you not watch the full video?
@@SammySesame sorry no I just wanted to see if it was Drayton Manor because I really want to go
I have also have made history of edaville thomas land and mine looks like crap compared to this.
Something about Mattel saying “Bruno is the first autistic character” instead of something like “Bruno’s the first character with autism” seems wrong. Idk, I know it’s not offensive, but the word ‘autistic’ just doesn’t sound right, especially with everything Mattel’s said regarding the sensory days in the park
Having Autism is worse to say because it makes it sound like a disease, saying ‘Autistic character’ hones in the fact Autism is a part of the person.
I mean, autistic is just the same as autism like this. "He's autistic, and I like him" similar to "He has autism, and I like him".
@@SammySesame Right, but it still just sounds kinda weird. Idk, I was thinking of the difference between “the autistic kid” and “the kid with autism” or something
Mattel sucks
I hope deeply hope that they saved the tv models
Mate it's not Britain ok it's American
